The Continental in Newcastle upon Tyne

I've always liked this bar. The choice of drinks and the decor is lovely. But they have recently added live music on a Friday and Saturday night and it is fantastic! The singers are great and the whole bar has a very relaxed but lively atmosphere. The live music has really has made it a must visit for us! Nice cocktail menu has also been a great addition.

Awesome cocktails. Each was a work of art. Bring your Instagram Escaped work drinks and found salvation in a glass. Lovely atmosphere. Very Newcastle. A hidden gem.

Amazing venue that we found by accident when walking past. Really friendly staff and great choice of interesting cocktails. Ended up staying longer than intended as the live music was brilliant. Will defo be back.

This was a fabulous gin bar with an extensive range of gins. Now it's a shadow of its former self; a very average cocktail bar with a small selection of mainstream gins and a small cocktail menu. No wonder it was empty when we visited.

Absolutely great little bar, the cocktail menu is quite small but every one I tried was delicious, and made by great bar staff (once I was able to get served). I'm normally not a fan of live entertainment in bars but the lad they had on when I was there was exceptional

Great place good choice of drinks reasonable prices

Fantastic staff, tasty tapas, amazing gin selection and a really nice venue. It can get busy but the staff are incredible at handling the pressure. Always feel welcomed and never disappointed.

First time in the Continental. Meeting friends before a meal Great range of Gins and spirits Mostly bottled beer but draught lager available San Miguel I believe Friendly atmosphere Trip to rest rooms is an experience and quite an eerie route deep below the bar. Quite exciting. To make it clear toilets are clean and well maintained btw

Great place live the cocktails.

We stopped in for a drink after diner and ended up staying for three. There’s a great cocktail menu, at good prices (two of the same for £15). We enjoyed their take on a negroni, plus live music, the cosy atmosphere and great service. Highly recommend.

Love this place!! The vibe is amazing and we went when they had live music on last time which made it even more special! We love the range of drinks they have available and the staff as always were brilliant! We will definitely be going back 😊

My favourite “go to” in Newcastle Close to the Central station and packed with class This former bank retains some of the original features (go to the toilets down stairs) This is the place Gin and Tapas originate A must do in the Toon

Always good and great atmosphere, however they did turn volume of music up which spoilt it a bit

Cool bar, great selection of gins.

Not as great as we remembered it. The gin menu has been massively cut back and most of them come with fluorescent tonics. I miss the old menus with 100s of gins, nice tonics and paired tapas. The atmosphere is still pretty great.

We went here on a Friday night for drinks with friends. Great gins on offer 2 singles for £10 and 2 double £15. Staff were really friendly and we paid at the table. Only thing was we were in the back room and the music was really loud so was hard to hear others talk.

This is consistently great. Fantastic staff, can't do enough to make your visit pleasurable. Tappas is excellent...gins are exceptional. Great value for money if you choose the 2 for £10/ £15 options other special gin menu. I love the place, relaxing, chill out and a great place to chat.

Food and drinks were great unfortunately atmosphere was ruined by a bunch of chavs swilling drinks and causing trouble who continued to be served all night even after starting a fight... What could have been an amazing evening was ruined could do with a doorman!

Great little place near central station with selection of authentic Spanish tapas and larger plates. Very efficient and friendly, huge selections of gins, great cocktails and small selection of good wines.

We had lunch at this lovely bar/ restaurant yesterday. The tapas was lovely and the bar is spotlessly clean . The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and huge selection of gin. We will definitely be back to this excellent restaurant which fully deserves a five star rating. Highly recommended.

Myself and partner were visiting Newcastle for the weekend and I found this place online so booked in. The gin menu is enormous I didn't know where to begin. We made our way through numerous gins and ordered some lovely tapas which were delicious and the portion sizes were very healthy! They were passing out free tapas tasters too which was a nice touch. The manager was extremely nice and suggested different gins to try and the waitress was also extremely helpful and friendly! (Sorry I didn't catch your names!) We loved this bar so much we ended up coming back the second night for some more gins. Its a beautiful bar with great atmosphere I would definitely recommend a visit. I wish we had something like this in Edinburgh! I don't usually write reviews but I thought this was was too brilliant not too!

I came as part of Eat Out To Help Out, I had the squid rings and tempura vegetables. The waitress looked super confused when I asked for a good menu, which may be because it's primarily a gin bar, but the food more than makes up for it. The portions were fantastic for the price and everything was perfectly cooked. The batter was crispy but the squid and vegetables were tender and juicy. It's certainly not the cheapest tapas restaurant, and their menu isn't the largest, but what they do they do it well.

Absolutely stunning dinner at the Continental. Staff are the most approachable and friendly people. The tapas and drinks were excellent and I will be highly recommending this to all my friends. Amazing night, and really good value

What a cracking place. We went in to try a few guns and were not disappointed. Huge , huge selection. We were offered free tapas to try. Very much reminded me of bars in Granada. For me it’s a got to revisit place.

Love this bar. Gin and tapas what more do you need. Fantastic array of gins...you wont be disappointed. New chef too who is Spanish so food is authentic with a good choice

Friend of ours brought us here as he knows we love our gins and this was a place you can hear yourself talk. They offer a small tapas with your gin and as both tasted lush we decided to make tapas our dinner and ordered some real ones from the menu. Bliss. All of them. Would love to add pics but somehow they are messed up in the app, all in the wrong order...

If your a fan of gin, this is the place for you. Try the Martin Miller. Complimentary tapas with first drinks and the staff are excellent.

Love this place, always pay a visit when in town

We went on a number of consecutive nights when we stayed in Newcastle for a couple of days in summer. To begin with, the atmosphere of the bar is very sophisticated, which might deter some to enter - but it's by no means as expensive as you would believe. On the contrary, there's one (out of many) pages on the menu featuring an intriguing choice of gin-based drinks for no more than 10 pounds for two. Service is very welcoming too. Can't judge the food because we only went for nightcaps. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a decent glass in a stylish bar you'd never expect in this area. Our love to the hosts.

WOW! Gefühlt ist hiermit von meiner Seite alles gesagt - hat aber keine 100 Zeichen. Der Raum ist sehr minimalistisch, die ganze Konzentration liegt auf der Bar - mit recht. Man findet hier ein atemberaubende Auswahl an Gin. Besonder jedoch fand ich die Freundlichkeit des Personals und vorallem auch die Hingabe, mit der die Cocktails gemixt wurden aber auch das Wissen. Aufgrund meiner ersten Wahl wurden mir weitere Sorten vorgestellt, die alle meinen Geschmack trafen. Absolut eine Empfehlung.

Great gin selection and service

Superb - friendly, helpful and attentive staff; excellent tapas that tasted authentic and an incredible drinks selection.

I called in tonight to see local bars as part of a 3 day trip and to say the least this bar did not disappoint, as soon as i walked trough the doors it’s was the barman’s first priority to meet and greet me and offer me a menu for the gin they had to offer, which he had phenomenal knowledge of , apperantly over 500 gins to be offered on this premises. There main serving bar is made of a natural stone which allows light to travel through creating an awesome atmosphere and there Copper works behind the bar are absolutely great, no expenses spared to say the least, they have a cool feature of a vault which houses some fine gins etc which can be offered for an exclusive tasting if required but overall I’d say this was the best place I have visited in Newcastle for both good hospitality and an awesome premises, thanks so much guys

My husband and I visited here on a Saturday afternoon. We found the staff pleasant and tapas portions surprisinly larger then expected. The idea of choosing two gin and tonics for £10 is appealing.

Lovely bar, great selection of drinks, not just gin

A lovely little gin bar where we were welcomed by Eric (who we found was his name later). He knew his product and was there to help with suggestions and recommendations. We were a little stuck for choice of the gins and needed help, so Eric came to our help. We watched as he single handedly moved from table to table, satisfying every customer in the room. he even brought complimentary nuts to our tables. Will make a return to this bar when next in Newcastle, if only for the excellent service.

Great place to go for a drink. Friendly staff and 500 gins ,the food is good and not expensive.

Just returned from a further visit to the Continental. Went early doors, and took advantage of the 2 gins for £10.00 offer. Drinks served from professional staff, who were welcoming and friendly. Enjoyed a complimentary tapas, which was delicious. Still being hungry, we ordered two plates of pinchax. Beautifully cooked sea food, and camembert cheese with strawberries. This was a combination which I would never have considered having but was gorgeous! Staff were great! Will definitely return and fancy joining their gin club!!

The Continental is a smallish bar but a great atmosphere.

Really impressed with the quality of the place. The bar reminds me of many quality bars we visit in London. Very classy and of course being an old bank has some of the charms of that as well. 2 quality G&Ts; for £10 and you can't get better than that. Service was exceptional. This is now our Gin bar of choice in Newcastle.

A massive variety of gins and different tonics to sample. The staff were friendly and really knowledgeable about the flavour combos and recommendations. A friendly atmosphere and stylish decoration. Tapas was offered, but didn’t need to sample today.

Good cocktails and free nibbles with your drinks.

Excellent 3 course meal in the Newcastle Restaurant Week at The Continental, enhanced by the two gin and tonics for £10. Service, ambiance and presentation of the highest standard. The pintxos menu looks great and during certain hours there is an offer of 3 pintxos for £15.00.

Went with a group of friends and we really enjoyed the experience. The service was extremely friendly and helpful. We were given free tapas with our drinks and I will definitely be back for food as it was excellent! We sampled 3 gins each (all different) and were really happy with the range on offer and the pairings available. We also took advantage of the 2 for £10 deal which we felt was good value. As gin lovers we enjoyed the experience!

Expecting £10 change, didn’t materialise, when we asked for it the waiter claimed he had already given it. Manager unhelpful and basically said she was too busy to sort it out... shocking customer service

An absolute hidden gem. Superb staff, great range of drinks - an entire universe of Gins. Highly recommended, but don't tell everyone!

Greeted and subsequently treated in an extremely friendly and professional manner by the manageress. Her knowledge of the 519 gins and the range of tonics along with the pairing of all ingredients was most impressive and indeed an education.

Probably the most sophisticated bar in Newcastle, with staff that whos knowledge rivals any of other bars. More choices here than the European Elections and more that matter, a wonderful place to indulge in fantastic drinks with ambiance that makes it worth it. A Gem

Visited this gin bar to get out of the rain, could not have been more pleased with the welcome I received from the barstaff. Service was hasty and efficient, and the gin and tapas were delightful. Would recommend!

Have visited The Continental on a number of occasions and love this bar housed in a former Bank. Great decor and atmosphere, choice of gins, tonics and as an added bonus complimentary tapas - nice touch. Staff are professional, friendly and helpful.

What a quirky little place. A gin palace with bottles stacked to the ceiling accessed by a ladder. On the way to the toilet check out the gin vault...,unbelievable

Visited on a Monday and still had a great atmosphere. Table service and the woman on the bar was amazing and helped in every way possible and was very chatty and friendly. The gins were paired perfectly and just the decor inside is enough to get someone in as well as a small plate of free complementary tapas (again didn’t let us down). Will definitely be going back!! Fab!!! Wouldn’t change a thing.

We booked for a gin tasting afternoon for 5 of us.......it was wonderful the guy was so informative we tried 5 gins with various tonics and we also had tapas which were delicious. This gin bar is owned by the same people as the decantus which is my favourite in Newcastle, there are so many gins to choose from and the service was excellent thank you to you all we will be back.

Went for birthday celebrations on Saturday night. The tapas were absolutely divine our waitresses Paloma & Claire were so friendly. Will be going back for more delicious food.

Visited on a quiet mid-week night and had a lovely couple of drinks. There was an extensive gin menu but we had choices from the ‘two for £10 ‘ menu, which were excellent. Not only were the drinks beautifully presented they each came with very tasty tapas, the decoration and surroundings were lovely and the staff welcoming. We moved on to another bar later in the evening but actually wished we’d stayed here. Will definitely re-visit and recommend.

Went in on a busy saturday night and the service was impeccable, we didnt try any of the gins but my wife can confirm the white wine was good. I myself just had 2/3 cana style 'pint'. We that we got given a little tapas, meatball on toast with a tomato sauce, it was a lovely addition. Will be back to try the gins!

A hidden gem (at time of writing!). Smallish, stylish bar with lovely staff and an indie personality. Gin menu incredible, beer menu terrible, it's that kind of place. But without any pretension. Continental vibe extends to small tapas being offered with drinks (it was quiet when I was there so this may not always be the case). They also do small plate (tapas style) food which we didn't try but the little sampler we had with our drinks was great. Probably best for couples or smallish groups who want to chat rather than big groups.
