very good breakfast Wonderful staff. They can't do enough for you. We had two days whilst staying here at cottage in Gomshall, eating a full breakfast each day which was fresh and delicious. Visited the compasses in the week, I was on my way back from a holiday, I have to say it was fantastic. It’s good to see a real pub with a traditional atmosphere. I was greeted by 3 very professional girls who were glad to accommodate me. The food was exactly what I needed, hearty, wholesome and how it should be! I will definitely be visiting again and bringing my family. 10/10 all I can say! Thank you

Whilst this was a great decade, it wasn’t for decor, the carpet is appalling and follows the vegas psychology of wanting you to look up so you miss the messy crumb ridden floor. The wide array of Niknaks, pictures and books throughout the restaurant area is also strange, 3D flowers in picture frames, gnome like garden monks and 20 empty bottles of vinegar alongside a Tupac Shakur Biography, as I said strange. The service however was faultless, two younger ladies however both brimming with confidence and knowledge and able to help with any questions or requests. Only downside is that I didn’t receive a check back whilst eating, may be a missed opportunity to amend a fault for customers, or maybe they didn’t do a check back because they’re used to complaint after complaint. This leads onto the Food, if you can call it that. As I was the only person under 60 in the pub I decided to try things that would pop out for my generation, instead of Doris choosing her Pate and Pork Chop. I went for the buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce and salad, and then followed up with the Beef Burger the the Apple Pie with Ice cream. The Wings, were sad, just sad, flats and drums, however the drums were the size of two marbles ontop of each other, coated in a sauce that must have been 90% vinegar, an off brand franks red hot, served with a fresh crisp salad covered in yoghurt…. Is this a curry house just use oil or dressing. The saving grace was the blue cheese sauce, however it was not homemade. The burger sounded delicious in the menu and I am a fiend for a brioche bun, so I was hoping it would redeem the sad starter. The patty was bought in, the bread wasn’t brioche, but a stale roll, the coleslaw was off and sour, the bacon was soft, the cheese was perfectly melted, the burger relish was acidic and bought in(bookers?), the patty itself was nicely cooked, yet bought in and under seasoned, make your own burgers it makes such a difference the lettuce was crisp, the chips served with the burger were similar to school chips however I can’t complain about them, great crisp fluffy inside and hot, great! However again a bookers special, so far nothing homemade. The chefs also appear to live upstairs or have a staff room upstairs, as they are constantly coming in and out, this lead to the feeling of the food being rushed so they could run back upstairs and continue what they were doing. However they were friendly, smiling and also happy to answer questions. The pub next door has recently been refurbished, but you can tell that by eating here, myself dining alone and two other tables of 2 OAP’s at 1 o’clock on a Saturday. The pub next door is rammed. For the compasses to be successful it needs to take a long hard look at itself and figure out what it needs to be. My apple pie arrived and I was praying that it would redeem the meal, as pudding is the last thing a customer eats it should be tasty, and memorable. This however was memorable for the wrong reason, it had been chucked into the microwave for two minutes and then had a wafer fan stuffed in it, I mean come on. The pastry was soggy and the apples had no flavour again something else bought in. I have no quarrels with restaurants buying things in at all, I understand it saves money and time, however when a restaurant strongly promotes that everything is made in house on the menu and the website they need to be called up on the lies. Without the waitresses The compasses would receive a 0.3/10 however the owners are lucky to have such great staff, give them something to be proud to serve. Big Chaz reviews The Compasses Gomshall 1.8/10

Generous portions and hearty food. Decently kept beer. Reliable WIFI. Sala who served me was very polite. Nothing is too much trouble. It's a very good down to earth local pub....with a nice garden. Mixture of locals in the bar and those seeking unprentious value lunch in the dining room.

It’s a lovely spot on the river and the garden is nice in the sunshine. Unfortunately the inside is incredibly shabby. All the chairs at our table had collapsed seats. My friend had a mug of hot water and the mug was dirty. The pork roast was dry. My kids said the burger was ok, but my salad was terrible. It was a tasteless iceberg lettuce cut up with what looked like salad cream slopped all over it. Not sure how you can get a salad so wrong!

Im sure this may have been a one off but I am gutted to say we had a terrible time at this pub for lunch. We arrived here and our umbrella took off our table (not their fault I know but the way it was handled was) we asked if our beers could be replaced as the umbrella taking off knocked all our drinks over, nearly cutting our baby across the face and spilling beer all over our 1 year old. A man who I believe was the manager also charged us for the replacement beers which I think is ridiculous customer service, of course it wasn’t his fault but it certainly wasn’t ours. My partner also had rust all over his hands afterwards and had to get a tetanus shot to prevent anything. We also ordered two starters which were clearly forgotten about because people arriving after us got their full on roast dinners before us. It was clear we’d been forgotten about but not one staff member actually fessed up and admitted, instead they lied and said the food was on the way. The young girl who brought the food over was actually giggling when she brought it out and said sorry for the wait which she clearly didn’t mean. Lovely pub but you need to majorly work on your customer service.

I’m sure that when the Sun is shining, there won’t be a more beautiful garden to sit in and enjoy a drink. The dining experience however doesn’t quite match it. The food was ok, nothing remarkable but the service was embarrassing with the 3 waitresses almost completely clueless having clearly had no training at all. I could have lived with the lack of decent service were it not for the dated 70’s interior which although surprisingly clean, really needs dragging into this century. This place has huge potential but desperately needs a refresh.

Firstly…I don’t normally write reviews but after reading the one I just read titled JACKET POTATOES I just had to write one. The lady that wrote this ridicules review (of which i witnessed her first hand) ordered like she was ordering steak tartare from a Michelin star restaurant!!! She wanted the jackets sliced down the middle (not cut in quarters) the cheese in no uncertain terms should not be melted but still put on top of a hot jacket potato…no butter on two of the three!!!! And then complained about the staff and the floury and dry texture!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! I have been here a few times and have always found the staff and atmosphere amazing!!! Friendly staff and customers and the food is exactly what it says on the tin…pub food!!!! Garden is great and on the hot days the kids can play in the river that runs beside!!!! 100% worth a visit!!!!

Ordered two kids roast dinners and Cumberland sausage and mash which can only be described as one of the most disgusting things we’ve ever ordered. Vegetables were similar of that of a stir fry. The lamb and the beef was as tough and chewy and had no flavour. Surprise, surprise the sausages were no better…deep fried, crunchy and dry. We should have seen the red flags when we noticed the disregarded children’s play area which a health and safety officer would have had a field day inspecting. Poorly maintained garden area, umbrellas laying all around the pub garden was not a nice end to what was a very nice day out in the Surrey hills. Other half resisted the urge to take a paddle, but another cusomer's children were having a good time. I love this sort of old pub with decor stuck in a timewarp, although it does seem to have been gently spruced up since last visited. We arrived around 3 on a sunny Thursday. The welcome, the service and the beer were all excellent. The menu was full of variety and with just a few tweaks from 2 years ago. Lovely proper pub food with no pretensions. This is a copy of an email I sent to the Compasses last Tuesday, I have received no reply!I am feeling very sad as I write this, but I feel compelled to bring to your attention the awful visit for lunch I had yesterday, which was a special last day of my daughters visit, the first time she has visited since I moved to the area 4 years ago. My partner, Tony and I along with our dog have been regular visitors to your establishment for the past 4 years and have always enjoyed excellent service from Linda, who created a warm and friendly atmosphere. So I was disappointed to discover that she has left when I went to the bar to order drinks for Tony, my daughter and 3 granddaughters.I was the only person at the bar, and one of your staff was moving bottles in your fridge. She did not even acknowledge I was waiting to be served. Eventually another young girl, possibly called Bonnie, came to take my drinks order, which consisted of 1 pint of Guinness, 1 pint of lemonade and lime and 4 j2os. The first drink she attended to was the Guinness, correctly so, she half filled the pint and left it to settle while got the rest of the drinks. She took my table number for the tab and I had to remind her that there was an unfinished Guinness to continue to pour, which she did clumsily, presented me with an overflowing pint of froth, instructing me to take it back if it wasn’t a full pint when settled. Our food order was 1 burger, 2 cod, 2 fish cakes and a gammon. The order was delivered to the table over 3 visits and with no cutlery, which I needed to ask for, when it came the first 2 meals were starting to go cold. The fish cakes and the burger were good. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the cod. The batter was thick and soggy, very disappointing and not to your usual standard. The gammon consisted of a half centimetre thick piece, that is a million miles away from what decent gammon should be. The fried egg on top of the gammon was snotty on top but the yolks were hard, again very disappointing.Following our meal, I had to clear the table as there was no attention being paid to the garden customers. I returned the glasses to the bar, asked for the same order of drinks and 4 sticky toffee puddings and a waffle. Once again there was a delay with the Guinness and ? Bonnie said she would bring it out, which she duly did, once again overflowing and slopped it over the table so that it could run through the slats and onto legs of our party sat down. The deserts were slow to arrive, the first being 2 of the sticky toffee puddings. After waiting a few minutes for the remaking 3 deserts to arrive, I asked the 2 members of the party who had desert in front of them to eat before it went cold. They had both finished their deserts before the remaining e were brought to the table. This is unacceptable and very unprofessional.I am so disappointed, I have always recommended The Compasses to my acquaintances, something I will not be doing in the future. When you have a regular customer who eats and brings friends along, rarely spending less than £50, surely in today’s climate, you should value that customer, along with the people who are holidaying in the area. Incidentally, yesterday’s bill was £153, not an insubstantial amount. For the service and quality of the food it was a far way from value for money. I will certainly think twice now before I return. If you are open to suggestions, I would firstly do everything possible to get Linda back to work for you, she was an incredible asset to your business. Secondly, make sure your staff are trained properly, the first girl I mentioned couldn’t even pour a lemonade, and apparently she has already had a few shifts…absolutely shocking.I would like to hear your thoughts on what I have to say.

I have driven past this place many times and on each occasion admired the lovely flower filled beer garden and though how nice it would be to call in for lunch on a gorgeous sunny day and as I had the time I decided to stop for lunch and give it a try.Upon entering the pub the welcome was warm and friendly and the lady behind the bar most pleasant and helpful and after going out into the garden and choosing a table number return to the bar to place my order for the BBQ spareribs.Sitting in the lovely beer garden was great unlike my lunch when I was served the smallest portion of baby back ribs I have ever had in my life These ribs were the type you can buy in many supermarkets in a box and plastic sleeve for £2..99 but these were an even smaller size and they had merely put them in the microwave in the plastic sleeve to heat them up and then put them on a plate to serve up, so much for BBQ ribs, if they had described them as microwaved ribs I would not have bothered ordering them. The pathetic portion of ribs were served with a small pot of skinny fries for an outrageous price of £15.95 and in my opinion was daylight robbery and certainly would not return keep on driving past in future.

I know it was BH Monday. I know it was the last day of the Eat Out campaign, but having got our table in the garden and our drinks (1 member of staff serving only), we were not informed until having queued again for food that the kitchen was overwhelmed and had stopped taking orders for the next 15 mins. This happened 3 times and seemed completely random with some customers getting served and others not. Very poor management and no communication. At least put customers in a numbered queue or inform us. We left and won't return.

Walked out before even ordering anything.Sign outside said to order at bar using a table number.Bloke in bar with a fierce looking dog (on a lead) looked us up and down once inside.Found a table easily enough, but it didn’t have a number.Had to ask at bar for a menu which was on very grubby pieces of paper.I asked if we should order food at the bar and the totally disinterested barman said he’d be over in a minute. Waited 10 which was too long so went for a take away instead. A big effort had been made with their flower garden and it looks lovely from the outside. It’s a shame this is not matched on the inside.

The pub garden is beautifully decorated with bright colored flowers and picnic tables. There is a small stream as well that adds to the setting. Perfect place to start of end a visit with a cold drink!

We visited here yesterday afternoon after driving by. We were greeted by very friendly bar staff and sat in the beautiful garden. Very busy but great there was lots of tables. We ordered food Halloumi burger and steak burger which were both excellent you couldn’t not fault the delicious food. Great size portions and home made tasing. Even tho we sat in the garden friends staff walking by still checked everything was ok. Lovely well kept garden with beautiful flowers and a great atmosphere. This was the second pub I had visited since Covid the first completely took the fun out of going out. It was great to see that here they were still remaining very safe following rules, lots of hand gels everywhere etc, but it was like visiting a pub on a normal day and still had a great experience. I will definitely be returning and would definitely recommend.

Lovely location by a clear stream fit for paddling for kids and play area. Found the food mediocre. The battered fish looked like a frozen product with thick greasy batter. Rude barman who very begrudgingly replaced an odd tasting pumped coke throwing the odd one away across the bar with an accusatory remark that it wasn’t wanted rather than a genuine issue that had been raised. Three people tried it and it didn’t taste like coke. I would return for a drink on a nice Summers day but would not eat there. Much nicer places around.

We called into the Compasses Inn for lunch because we found the nearby Gomshall Mill shut due to flooding. It turned out to be a good discovery. The staff in this olde-worlde pub were friendly, and we were amused by the antics of the other customers' dogs. We enjoyed good pub food, e.g. chili con carne and sausages and mash, for a reasonable price. I can recommend the 'Shere Drop' beer too.

We visited the Compasses after a morning ramble going over towards Peaslake and returning via outskirts of Shire. About 12 km... A pint and lunch at the Compasses was very welcome. Beer wonderful. Food tasty and reasonably priced. Service excellent. Recommended.

Dropped in with a few friends for a drink. The pub is much improved from when I remember it with clean interior and roaring fire. Staff provided efficient service and quality beer (eg Shere Drop). Will revisit.

We were on our way to Shere, when we drove past this Inn with such a lovely garden. Lots and lots of colourful petunias, stream running alongside.... how could we resist stopping here? We didn't eat in the pub - just had tea and biscuits. Oh... and took lots and lots of photos of course! Staff was pleasant and helpful.

We went on speck and it was disappointing to find there was no lunchtime menu on line to view with was a negative. The meals here were just about OK but there is plenty of room for improvement. the service was a tad offhand. Nice location but we do not think we would revisit the Compasses Inn in Gomshall. a poor experience.

The frontage sell the pub , they are well maintained with masses of flowers; very pretty, but inside a different matter, tired and grubby. The girl who served us had an attitude and made to feel we were an intrusion, maybe she was having a bad day.

Good outdoor seating area in the summer. Quiet but can see the cars passing by on the road. Some of the benches could do with being levelled up - the gravy ran to one side of the plate!Good reasonably priced Sunday Roast. A proper country pub, although slightly in need of a bit of refurb.

We were on our way to Crawley/Gatwick and came across this beautiful Inn. Right beside the road with a stream running beside it and a beautiful garden absolutely full of hanging baskets and pots of flowers. We had a nice friendly welcome and enjoyed a good large pot of tea outside in the pleasant surroundings. There was a small children’s play area too. The toilets were clean but oh so very dated!

Grandchildren enjoyed the simple play area and paddling in the stream, whilst adults enjoyed eating, drinking & chatting. Quite rustic, rough & ready, but charming context. Food was good, service was pleasant and satisfactory.

Stopped by for lunch and a pint after "walking the chalk" from Dorking. The food was OK but nothing special. The locally brewed beer was great. The bar staff was pleasant enough without making a real effort. Pub looking slightly tired and untidy.

Very disappointing visit as used to be a lovely pub. No precautions in place for covid - no details being taken from visitors and just 1 small token bottle of hand sanitiser on the bar. Big groups of very young people (made me feel old in mid-30s!)with no attempt at social distancing. Toilets were dirty and smelly. Won't be going back!
