Very disappointing visit as used to be a lovely pub. No precautions in place for covid - no details being taken from visitors and just 1 small token bottle of hand sanitiser on the bar. Big groups of very young people (made me feel old in mid-30s!)with no attempt at social distancing. Toilets were dirty and smelly. Won't be going back!

Visited here for the first (and probably last) time a few days ago. Asked to sign in as we arrived but no other obvious protocols in place. After we arrived a group of around 20 students (and a couple of adults) arrived in small groups. Not a single one was asked to sign in, and every single person hugged and kissed every other single person, directly in front of the bar, with no member of staff making any effort to give them guidance. It will be places like this that put us into lockdown again. They could at least make an effort. The risk for me is too high for me to visit again and I would urge anyone who has any concerns about coronavirus to consider an alternative drinking destination, such as Rogues up the road who do a great job of balancing safety with common sense.

As a couple, we enjoy going out for meal quite often and discounts with Groupon give us the opportunity to do this regularly. Guildford seemed to be a perfect Sunday destination for lunch and the tempting photo of a rare sirloin of beef with all the trimmings presented on a wooden board was enough to click 'buy'! The pub itself is quite well presented but would benefit from a thorough clean: tables are sticky and chipped, wooden floor is dirty and badly scratched, going to the ladies you pass the gents which stank! Service was very slow, we were there 2 hours for 2 courses which we were told was because there were only 2 persons to cook/take orders and serve; however, most people were 'groupon customers' who had had to book so surely the management were expecting a certain number of customers?! The food was a Sunday roast (not rare!)drenched in gravy and really nothing special. So I appreciate that Groupon discounts are enticing but they should not be misguiding. It is the opportunity for a business to 'showcase' their service. I am afraid we will not be back there even at 50% discount!

Used to visit here a lot in the late 80s when it was called The Rats Castle and it was always buzzing. Not sure why the name change but even so, it’s not how I remember. Stopped by for a quick pint on a Sunday afternoon and sat outside at one of the grotty picnic style tables alongside Sydenham Road. The only ale I could see being served was London Pride and prices were higher than other nearby pubs we visited. Overall a disappointing trip down memory lane.

We discussed all my requirements in detail and nothing was any trouble. The actual night was brilliant and my guests were all really impressed. My drinks of choice are ale, red wine and gin so I was very pleased with the selection, especially the gin menu! I ordered a buffet too and sadly I didnt get to eat any of it so I can't comment on the food!

We booked a table for five at this pub as a pre-show meal before going to see something at GLIVE. The table was booked for 5.30. we arrived on time. It took a long time to take our order, 15 minutes! Infact in the end we went to the bar to order, because there was no sign of anyone coming. We waited and waited for our food! After 40 minutes I asked when our food was coming... reply, "it's just coming". 10 minutes later, asked again...reply, "just coming" 10 minutes later our food arrived. One hour after ordering!! Reason..."we only have one cook in" our response..." There is only 5 of us, having the same thing! And nobody else in the pub!!!. Anyway....the food was "ok" didn't come with steak chips as advertised, but horrible skinny fries, missing coleslaw (we've run-out) no pickles, and salad which was a pile of green leaves (could have been picked from the garden!!?? Finally, to make our experience even better, we could hear the cook/ chef?? Shouting and ranting in the kitchen about "not even his job, not supposed to even be there etc etc. We would never visit this pub ever again, and advise others not to either.

We had burgers and the fish and chips, all of us, and not one of us was disappointed. I never normally eat burgers finding them a bit greasy, but this was sublime. Really good, and the chips were nicely hot and served in a separate little bowl. Would I go again? Absolutely, yes.

Been a while since my wife and I have eaten at the Albany. Last time was good, this time less so.Ordered late lunch on a Sunday . Whitebait stater that was plentiful , tasty and fresh. Then mains of cod and Chips, and roast beef meal with Yorkshire pud , pots etc.The cod was small, and not fresh. The roast was a bit fatty, and tough. Vegs were without taste ( except the cauliflower cheese which was good). Carrot tasteless, Yorks pud was small and no flavour. On average a bit of a disappointment , especially as we had eaten there a few times over the last couple of summers and always enjoyed the offer.Final note. The two main courses arrived 5 mins apart. The place was v quiet so no excuses really for not plating up at the same time.

I couln't stop going on about the roasts at this place basing it on my previous experience so decided to take the neighbours! Boy was I wrong. The most disgusting roast I have ever had. The last pork portion that looked like could have satisfied a 3 year old it was tiny. The second I tried it I realised not even a dog would enjoy it. I retuned it straight away and the waiter asked what I would prefer instead. I tried my boyfriends beef and that was ridiculously overcooked, had no choice but to have lamb which I hate and it was so fatty. Although the waiters where very kind and tried to justify themselves by saying their best chef had left it was still not good enough. At one point I was told I would need to pay for my pork as I had now chosen the lamb! Not impressed and won't be returning! It's a shame it used to be one of my favourite restaurants now I would suggest you stay away!

The interior of each bedroom is nicely fitted out with solid modern furniture and nice TV. Bathrooms are new, with granite tile finish. My room was warm and quiet and clean. Wifi even on the top floor was excellent.Downstairs, the pub is clean and welcoming, with a nice mix of bar tables and comfy couches. I had the warm chili beef salad which was a perfect lunch. Fair warning... if you want a quiet bed on a Thu/ Fri/ Sat night, don't stay in a pub anywhere. Parking is indeed a pain, though the staff were very helpful when I asked for advice.

I can see the type of place this is trying to be however it really does need an overhaul. We stayed in a room which was just a student dig, terrible stains on the carpet and the noise from the road was noticiable even late at night/early in the morning, there is no parking this costs the princely sum of 80p for 30mins until 6pm and after 830am which meant we had to get up very early. Im not sure how you would escape in a fire, there ws no fire exit and it was on the third/top floor. The window appeared painted shut. No breakfast available. On the plus side the staff were very friendly and when something wsnt quite right with the meal I recvd a glass of wine on the house unprompted. The heating was not on in the pub or the room (they provided an electric fire despite there being rads in the room)

We stopped in here after a bit of a shop and settled in for the long term. Cosy leather sofas and the papers:perfect .We decided on the very reasonable 2 course lunch for £12.50 and had a delicious starter of fish cake and another of braised chorizo and onions. The mains of beef and lamb roasts were also very good with vegetables cooked to perfection and served separately. This is my fave pub at the top of town and they have some very good offers. The pub is also prettily decorated with lights outside which I think they keep all year.

Our visit was the 6th November. As we came through the doors I was not clear where the restaurant was but eventually found it around the side of the bar and towards the back. It was nicely situated away from the entrance and bar area. It was a Wednesday evening and not too many people about. A few people that looked like they may have popped in after work for a meal. I had actually downloaded a voucher from the internet (found on their site) and decided to try this restaurant and use the voucher. The waiter was lovely (he was new it was his third week there) and he was very helpful. The music was great and you could clearly hear it without it being too loud and inappropriate. The chairs were comfortable and we were able to have a nice conversation and not get heard by the people sitting at the other tables. It was a nice place for a private intimate meal. We had lovely meals of fish and chips and I had fishcakes. Both were great. We haven't really thought about going back there but not because we didn't enjoy the meal, it is just that there are so many other choices out there. Parking was easy to get to by just parking on the same side of the road but about a minute further down the road (past the front of the restaurant). If you haven't been and are thinking of going, I would say it is good to try this place. I think it could be noisy if you go there late as you will be able to hear the noise coming from the bar area but midweek around 7 was probably a good choice for some quiet time with good food. To be fair to the place, I have said poor for special occassion only because unless you book out the entire area I wouldn't consider it a great place to go for a special occassion.

We both had the Lamb Stew, very tasty and plenty of tender meat. However apart from Carrots and Dumpling it has no root vegetables even potato! The addition of these would have vastly improved the dish.

We booked using a Group On voucher for 2 course dinner and 1 nights accomodation, the welcome was warm and we were shown to our room, which was ok although certainly lacking in attention to the smaller details. The food we had was very good much better than most pub food and a much more varied menu, the service was also very good. The pub itself was quite noisy which was certainly not improved when the live band arrived, if you are in the business of renting rooms a heads up to your customers who are staying upstairs. For us a very late night which defeated the reason for us staying in the first place,

This is a very nice, quaint neighborhood bar in Guildford. If you get a chance, grab the back alcove (left of the car) when you walk in. Is ad sofas and seats that make for a more intimate setting than the open area that makes up the rest of the barFish & Chips were the order of the day and this place will not disappoint. Yummy. Even the locals were raving of their Fish & Chips which I must say was very good.

We stayed at the Albany (which is more of a pub than a hotel) last Saturday night using a voucher for a 2 course dinner and overnight stay.We arrived in the afternoon and received a warm welcome and were shown to our room. The rooms have a separate entrance to the pub and are up a couple of flights of stairs. The room was large enough, nicely decorated with an en-suite shower room. The double bed proved to be 2 singles joined together - although to be fair I don't see how they could have got an actual double up the stairs. There is a kettle with tea, coffee and drinking chocolate and biscuits in the room. There was plenty of hot water for washing and showers - you need to run the basin tap for a while. There is also an ironing board and iron on the landing.A table was reserved for us in the pub for dinner and we both had a starter and main. The menu is better than normal pub food - check their website for the menu. Maybe because it was a Saturday night it was quite noisy. The Albany is in a quietish road in Guildford just a short walk from the High Street with all the shops and restaurants. As it doesn't have it's own car park we parked in the public car park just down the road. Street parking in the area is free after 6:00pm. In short it's not somewhere to stay for a week but is perfectly fine if you need to stay for a few nights in Guildford.

My wife and I went for a late Sunday lunch at short notice. Nice ambience, and very good Sunday lunch - roast lamb with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and generous side dishes of parsnip, sprouts and cauliflower cheese. The lamb was rarer than requested but tasted very good. Accompanied by the Chilean merlot made for a very satisfying lunch. Minor complaints were that we were not given the opportunity to taste the wine : two glasses and the screw top bottle of Merlot were plonked ( !) on the table and we had to serve ourselves!

My wife and I had dinner at this venue last evening and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the pleasant service. There is a good choice and a wine list with some good wines, but none were 'cheap'.My wife had the rack of lamb which she declared to be one of the best. I had the rib-eye which was fine, but not outstanding. The special knife supplied with the steak was useless as it was very blunt, a common fault I have found in restaurants. Surely a really sharp knife gives an impression of tender meat. Overall we thought it was a good choice.

The placed packed out quick and the atmosphere was excellent and some good banter flowing round. The manager/owner was buzzing around making sure all was well and people could see and get a beer. The bar service was quick given how busy the pub was and bar snacks were delivered quickly when ordered. Will be going back for those important sporting events and meeting with friends.Thank you guys at the Albany.

We've eaten at The Albany a number of times over the past couple of months and have always had a good experience. We're a liitle surprised to read some of the less enthusiastic reviews on here.... I guess you can't please all the people all the time. We love the salt and pepper squid and the sunday lunch last week was very good indeed. Service is always very good, high quality ingredients, and there is a good selection of wine and beer.We are surprised The Albany isn't much busier than it appears to be. We eat out a lot and its quite difficult to find a combination of quality food, good service, and reasonable prices in Guildford and the surrounding area. The Albany provides all this in our experience.

Took my wife for a Valentine's treat. She ordered a Gourmet Burger, and asked for it to be rare. When, after 20 minutes, it arrived, it turned out to be very, very well done. We were told that health and safety prevented them from serving a burger rare; if so, shouldn't we have been told this when we ordered it? IN fairness, when we returned the meal they gave a full refund without question.I thought that not much could be wrong with my fish and chips. They would probably have been fine if both the plate and the food had not been stone cold. I left mine after a few mouthfuls.A very pleasant manager did come to apologise, and asked us to ask for him by name the next time we came there. I'm afraid that there is unlikely to be a next time.

The service at the Albany was appalling! A group of 6 of us ate there and the food was fine (not great, just average) but the service was shocking! We repeatedly had to go to the bar to ask for drinks, menus, dessert etc. They basically left us and forgot about us. The guy who took our order (possibly a manager) got it wrong several times, e.g. we ordered a small malbec and ended up with a large merlot. He also rolled his eyes when we asked to have our coffee with the desert.

Greeted by the lovely pet -not sure it was the pub's- into a very welcoming atmosphere. Started was lovely and fulfilling. After a rather long wait, finally got the main -sea bass was totally worth the wait. If it wasn't because the slightly undercooked potatoes, the fish would have been superb. Yet, dish worth trying, and well above the gourmet burger!

I've eaten here once before on a Groupon & thought the food was delicious. I had the gourmet burger & wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Roll forward 6 months or so & I'm attending a friends birthday where 40 odd people are eating. £16 per head for a starter & a main doesn't seem too unreasonable & when I saw the gourmet burger on the (very limited) menu I immediately ordered it as I'd had a such a good one before. I don't think I'm exagerating when I say it was awful. Huge bun, one leaf of lettuce, & sat unceremoniously in there was a lukewarm, dry burger. The chips were also a let down as they were cold & not pleasant to it. A gourmet burger it most certainly was not. The starter saved it slightly (a tapas type board) but even that had to be eeked out between 4 people as it seemed more suited for 2. This was pretty embarassing for me having told the group I was sat with how good my last one was, so they all ordered it! What on earth has happened here? I can only assume they were very underequipped to deal with the large group, although that said, they advertise around the pub that they can cater for up to 100 - I can't imagine what that must be like. I would avoid this place if you have a large group booking.

I don't often write reviews but having had such a disappointing meal at The Albany this weekend, I felt the need to. I went as part of a group of 45 for a friend's birthday. We were all asked to pay £16 per head for shared starter platters and a choice of main meal. I thought this sounded pretty reasonable and had heard good things about the food there so was looking forward to it. On arrival I was slightly disappointed to find only 4 choices for the main meal but given that it was large group I could understand that. The shared platters consisted of bread, baked camembert, olives, humous and cured meats. The amount per person was probably smaller than a usual starter portion but that didn't really matter and it all tasted nice. For my main I had chosen "The Albany Gourmet Burger" as someone I was with had recently eaten it and said it was one of the best burgers she'd had. But sadly this was not. It was possibly the worst burger I've ever eaten and thats not an exaggeration. Firstly it was very cold, as were the chips and I don't mean slightly cooled down but they were rubbery and floppy as if they had been left for half an hour - horrible! The "gourmet" burger also tasted of absolutely nothing and if it wasn't for the chipotle mayonnaise (which we had to ask for) I don't think I would have been able to eat any of it. To top it off, all that was in the bun with the burger was lettuce. Burger King don't claim to sell gourmet burgers but at least they give you gherkin and tomato. Everyone I spoke to who had the burger agreed that it was terrible. Some people may argue that with a large group you shouldn't expect the same standard as normal but if they can't cope with the numbers they shouldn't accept the booking. Also having since looked at their menu online I also think we were hugely overcharged. The burger is £8.50 and a meze platter £12 which I would expect to feed 2 people but actually we were sharing it between 4 so I think we should have been paying around £12 per head instead of £16 so lucky them, they made a killing. To top it off, next to the bar was a sign saying "free prosecco for large groups" but when my friend who had brought in a huge amount of business for them asked about it they told her we were already getting a deal with the food so wouldn't qualify for anything else! If I was given that standard of food on a normal day I would have refused to pay for it which I have never done before, but as it was a friend's birthday I didn't feel it was my place to complain. I certainly won't be going back there for my dinner though!

I liked the Albany and would stay/eat there again. The food was good value, as it was a cut above the usual pub grub, without being priced at gastro pub levels. The room was modern, comfortable, clean and functional, meeting my expectations of a "pub with rooms." Frankly, I have stayed in much worse places whilst paying a great deal more for the privilege! My only note of caution is the availability of parking space. There is none onsite, and the street parking is limited, expensive and expires early in the morning, which whilst not important for business guests could be an issue for people taking leisure breaks. There is a multi-storey in the vicinity, but I advise dropping your luggage at the hotel prior to parking, as it is a bit of a walk. The Albany is located slightly away from the town centre, but it's within easy walking distance of the shops, cafes, bars, etc.

My husband and I had a lovely dinner here during our vacation. Being that it was a rainy weeknight, the dining area was a bit empty, although a good mix of professionals, families, and other neighborhood folks congregated near the bar area. The location is a tucked-away neighborhood a few steps away from the main shopping street in Guildford. Our server was attentive and friendly, and took time to point out his beer and food recommendations, which were all spot-on.
