Delicious food, great service, friendly staff and very cosy ambience!!

Have had some really good meals. Steak, fish and chips etc. Slightly disappointed with the roast as was served roasted from frozen potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. For £18 would expect better.

Stopped here for a roast and it really didn’t disappoint. Turkey and beef was cooked brilliantly. Lovely potatoes and veg too. Good size portions. Staff were really happy and helpful. Dog friendly. Would highly recommend.

Booked for 6 family members for Sunday lunch some time ago and in general the food was pretty good. Schnitzel was a bit odd this should have been flattened out and the garlic butter spread round the chicken before it was breadcrumbed but a lump of garlic butter was just dumped on top, bit odd. The spoiler for us was we were seated with about an inch gap between us and a table of 5, we might as well all have been seated together, when they were talking we couldn't hear ourselves and vice versa, this made the whole meal pretty uncomfortable especially as the pub was quite empty when we first arrived. What made the meal was the excellent service by the young waitress, she was extremely pleasant and attentive, she forgot nothing and is an absolute credit to the pub, she did an excellent job. Overall if we had been seated somewhere else it would have been a lovely meal. We would come again but would question the seating arrangements if necessary

The team were met with lovely, friendly staff in a welcoming rustic tavern. 2 of us had the ‘Somerset Burger’, which was so much more than just a burger, while the other 2 had the ‘British Beef Steak & Craft Ale Pie’ and Cod & Chips. These were followed with Sticky Toffee puddings, 2 with Vanilla ice cream, 1 with custard, and 1 Bread & Butter Pudding. The food was definitely not ‘Pub Grub’, it was absolutely amazing. Everything considered, we are going to have to make this a regular thing in 2025.

Popped in for a pint at the end of my day and also had a meal , came out in a quick time and tasted great , will definitely pop back when in the area again thanks .

Went to the Compass Inn on a Sunday night for food. Me, my wife and son were very impressed with the quality and service here. I had a 10 oz steak which was cooked perfectly, my wife had the burger which also was excellent, my son had the scampi which was cooked to perfection. The ambience of the place is spot on. The staff also are respectful and cater for your every need.

Met up with family for Sunday dinner at this convenient, halfway location. Great service, we were very well looked after. Straight forward to book online. Delicious food, clean and welcoming environment - even the sauce bottles were spotless! Generous portions and delicious puds. My only comment would be to vary the ingredients in the veggie options as many had mushrooms, and not every veggie likes them! Highly recommended.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch out here. We had a beef dinner and turkey dinner. Also had a apple pie with custard.

Popped in on off chance for a Sunday Roast, the car park was packed which is a good sign and lucked out getting a table. Dog friendly and happy to have hounds inside and lovely female staff member brought a bowl of water and dog biscuits to table, a lovely touch. The roast was fresh, large portion and delicious and great price for size and quality we received. Overall a lovely lunch and will definitely be back, but will book next time! Thanks for looking after us (and Sass) so well.

Food was great bit noisy in one area asked to be moved got moved no problem service very good...

Food ok but waitress was not knowledgeable of the menu. My friend asked for a pie but it was out of stock so was offered an alternative that contained "mushrooms and something else". She didn't even know what the pie was called and didn't offer to go to the kitchen to find out. We also felt rushed out as last orders were called at 9pm. I won't be going back unfortunately 😕

Second time here on a Sunday lunchtime, and another fabulous meal. It's a half way hand over/meeting point for our two families (Torquay and Gloucester) and we'll definitely meet here again. Great service, friendly staff and great value food. I would give a 5* review for atmosphere but as we've only been here on a Sunday, I can't couch for other days. However, if a Sunday is anything to go by, you won't be disappointed. Thank you, can't wait to come again 😊

This was the worst Sunday lunch I’ve ever had! Beef un-cuttable, even with a steak knife! turkey had a nasty flavour. Landlord arrogant when I told him and rude. Expensive and simply awful. NEVER AGAIN!!

Had fantastic service and meal 30/09/1924 Served by two very welcoming, professional and friendly ladies, who clearly knew what they were doing. Impressed.

Unfortunately our first visit back since changed hands and very disappointed on the roast dinner beef was very fatty frozen roast potatoes not proper spud which you would expect for the price of the meal then asked for a coffee but possibly hotter this time as first one was barely warm ,I didn't like the attitude of the manager behind the bar he didn't realise o could see his attitude when asked to do this ,the feed back I've heard since the change over has been done is true I will not be returning

This is an excellent place for a drink and a chat, bit also for food. 2 adults +child all very excellent meals and plenty of it. Staff friendly and efficient. Old world pub . Huge beer garden plenty of parking.

We stopped here last minute for a “halfway house” meal coming home from the airport and, what a find! The food was delicious “best of British” stuff and the two ladies working the bar were helpful, polite and friendly, safe to say, we will do our stopovers here again.

Yesterday evening a party of 13 went to The Compass for a 50th birthday party. As usual the food was excellent. This is such a homely, cosy pub. We go there often. Can't recommend this pub enough. Staff friendly too , as were the owners

We stopped in this delightful pub for a dinner meal. My wife and I are vegetarian. Upon reviewing the menu, we found several options that we could try. Karen, who served the table, was delightful and informed us of any changes to the standard menu. After ordering our food, we were informed that the chef would be willing to make us a meal that was not usually available on the menu to accommodate our dietary requirements, which was truly above and beyond. Our food was delicious, and the atmosphere was amazing in this venue that was full of aged charm and nostalgic reverence. It was clear that all the staff were enjoying themselves, which made the service top tier. Thank you for a delightful meal. Just what we were looking for.

Booked a group meal for 10 on a Saturday night. We had a warm and friendly welcome, and were quickly showed to our table where we were comfortable and the atmosphere was great. The great experience continued with the Service. Our waitress was helpful and attentive, and when the food arrived it was absolutely delicious. I asked about the food and was advised it was all cooked from scratch in the kitchen, which was clear from the taste, presentation and quality. For the quality of food it was also fairly priced. Great selection of drinks too. Next time we're in the area, we'll 100% be back!

Went there on a thursday,very surprised how busy it was.The whole experience was great.The service was fantastic,and as for the food,well.There were 4 adults and 2 kids and everyone of us cleared our plates.Will be there again no doubt,becoming a very popular place.

This was a lovely place for us and our dog to come for an evening meal. Everywhere very clean, lovely hot food and the staff very friendly. Sadly as we were leaving, a dog from another table ran over and attacked ours which obviously is only the fault of the dogs owners who failed to have control of their dog. Highly recommended but please keep hold of your dogs leads in dog friendly pubs!

Service was very good and waitress friendly but the quality of food was mediocre. Shame to serve a frozen battered fish portion and charge £16.50.For this price I would have expected better quality. Would think twice before returning.

My daughter and I popped into this very welcoming friendly pub for Sunday lunch. The front of house staff were efficient and friendly. The roast was delivered to the table very quickly and the roast was hot and delicious. The gravy was outstanding and in my opinion makes a good roast dinner. A great little pub of which we will be returning to. Thank you 😊

2nd time in coming here and would highly recommend. It was busy this time round but still didn't have to wait for very long. Proper home cooked food and portion size wasn't skipped (bonus). Prices were good and the lemon curd cheesecake was to die for! Will be back again for another visit at some point.

Decided to pop out to the compass was met by a lovely bubbley waitress and quickly taken to our table .the bar area was very busy with meals been delivered .our order for drinks were taken and our meals arrived around 20 minutes later.both meals salmon and liver and onions and mash were both very nice .there's a separate smoking area covered outside plus a beer garden.new owners have taken over the compass .Will be returning thank you all staff at the compass North Petherton

Complete turn around from a few years ago Lovely atmosphere and service

After posting a fair but scathing review in April2022 vowing to never return. I heard positive comments from friends about the new management team so I decided to try The Compass again. I am so glad I did. The food is great and the staff are friendly. I have become a regular visitor again. I would recommend The Compass Inn without hesitation.

You would think that a pub would be glad to receive a booking for eleven people for lunch mid week but no, not without a deposit of £5pp. The lady I spoke to was very happy for us to go elsewhere, they must be doing very well to be able to turn customers away. This was a venue that we were looking to make a regular visit to.

Lovely old pub that is dog friendly both indoors and outdoors. Food was exceptional and great value.

My wife and her sister chose this for their mother's wake. It was superb! One of the partners, Michael, worked with them to put on a spread which catered for everyone. My vegetarian wife, my nephew who loves ham but hates mustard. He even asked what their Mom, Mabel, loved most and put on a huge Victoria sponge. Perfect soft, moist sponge with half-inch layers of cream and a generous amount of tangy jam. Absolutely first class. I hope you continue to thrive as much as you deserve to! 🖖😎 Thank you!

I ordered a chicken cesaer salad from the kind waitress. But received a plain cesaer salad with no chicken. When I queried it chicken was sent out but was too late by then and had obviously been microwaved from frozen. I couldn't eat it. The staff seemed uncaring about it and I left hungry.

Prices are too much for portions you get and there always seems to be bloody chips or fries with everything. Had the beef and ale pie, very mediocre for price. Choice of draft beers was mainly lagers which were expensive

Cracking little pub with great food and a warm friendly atmosphere, we stopped here with a coach party on Fri 5th July 2024 ,46 of us in total , food was served quickly and efficiently and a great clrange of beverages both Alcoholic and soft . Highly recommend.

Back again for a birthday meal, not the first time since the last review but the first time since the new owners took over. Wow! What a difference, the vibe is so good, the staff are relaxed, fun and familiar, but never not professional. The new owner is friendly and welcoming, his wife was working tonight and is hilarious. I would now recommend this place just on the quality of staff alone. The food is spot on too. Would definitely go again tomorrow night!

I can honestly say best experience I have had in Pub for a long time, family run and the whole team are engaged to make your visit a good one ! 4 of us visited for Sunday lunch, haven't been to the Compass for many years, it wouldn't have crossed our minds if not for a friends recommendation. The Compass is an ancient pub, lots of original stone and wooden beams, very relaxed and a comfortable feel to the place. 2 of us ordered from the set menu, 2 had the Sunday roast (beef, turkey or pork) there was also an extensive specials board, and a good selection for vegetarian/vegans. The mains were excellent, the puddings were excellent and extremely well presented. The young lady who served us needs a special mention, very cheerful and professional, couldn’t ask for better, so thank you very much Charlotte. Would definitely return & recommend

Absolutely faultless well worth a detour as only just off the M5. Very reasonable food which was delicious, well cooked and a good portion. We will be returning

Although situated on a main road, once you step inside you could be anywhere. Great old pub with helpful friendly staff. The food is very good and well priced . It's becoming our regular go to for a roast. Nice selection of drinks.

Just been in this pub after an afternoon out, on holiday in the area starting to find eating out a bit of a problem but what a great decision this was!,dog friendly, nice surroundings, and quite welcoming. A very pretty and helpful young lady(Alia) showed us to a table and after looking at the menu... BTW it was my wife's birthday, she opted for a sirloin, wasn't kean on the sauces but the young lady said she would ask the chef if a diane sauce could be made instead... which she said yes he would, I had the steak &ale pie.... well recommended, not like the type you get in chain pubs, full of stodgy pastry and gristle tough meat, ok, the bill was more than we would spend normally but you can tell the difference in quality, just goes to show you get what you pay for, had a pricey bottle of wine even our dog bradley had some ice cream in a bowl to the amusement of the staff!! All in all really enjoyed our visit and hope to return before our journey back to the north west. We'll done Alia, wish all staff were as helpful and accomodating as you.

Lovely inside, great welcome and great choice and which wasn't a pub chain menu. Had the Sunday Roast and the food was delicious and generous, just what we needed after a girls weekend away. Staff were friendly and helpful, very impressed and a shame it's not my local. Definitely a great stop if traveling up or down the M5, as 3 mins off the junction.

My wife & I visited The Compass this evening for dinner. We hadn’t visited for a couple of years due to having a bad experience then. It couldn’t be any different. The girls who served us were very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent; tasty, fresh veg (not frozen) and hot! We will definitely go back again and make it a regular thing! Thank you.

Decided for an impulsive dinner out locally and went online at 6.20pm and booked a table for 7pm as we had been told The Compass has new owners, we hadn't been there for over a year, thought we would give it a go! The first thing Husband said when we walked in was that "it looked cleaner"! We arrived ten minutes early and was greeted warmly by a chap behind the bar who said welcome and would we like the table immediately. Order the Melted Camembert which arrived about 10 mins later, cooked to perfection, absolutely delicious with loads of sourdough bread on the side. Main course of bellypork with mashed potato, spring greens and homemade gravy. Once again cooked to perfection, really nice. Husband had prawn cocktail and said there were lots of prawns in it, he then went on to have the Ribeye steak with side order of Halloumi fries which he said were the best he's had for a long time. Steak was tender and cooked medium, lots of flavor he told me. Staff were smiling and attentive but not overly so, we didn't feel over bothered which can happen in so many places Thought the whole meal experience was really enjoyable with good portions and the meat was cooked perfectly, excellent, and I am really fussy! - I'm trying to fault something but can't.. Definitely going to go again.

Food would have rated better, but the crust of my pie was hard as rock. Wine was OK. Service was good. Price towards the upper end for pubs. Difficult to find the entrance in the dark and the rain.

Food amazing!! we had the cod ,beef and ale pie with mash and veg and the amazing mussels to die for . Amazing food & desserts !! Will return very soon . Amazing find you won't be disappointed!! :) I love good quality napkins they were first class. Service couldn't fault girls were amazing nothing to much trouble . Exquisite food, crisp drinks, welll priced, beautiful building, dog and family friendly. Vass the boss clearly has a genuine natural passion for his art in service. Not the sort of person to be easily pleased but very pleasantly impressed with the outstanding food, service, atmosphere and attention to detail.

Moved to Bridgwater a year ago hunting for a decent fish&chip shop and haven’t found one yet, came across this pub on a drive home and tried the cod & chips, best cod I’ve had 10/10!

Went here for a meal whilst staying over the road at the Premier Inn. Lovely friendly staff and a very good meal would recommend.

Managed to walk in and get a table for two, after being turned away from numerous places around the bridgewayer area. The team immediately extremely friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Great choice on the menu. We sat in a quiet spot so myself and my friend could have a good catch up. Checked on throughout the evening, food was tasty and delicious. And we shared a dessert. Amazing homemade choice of desserts. We would throughly recommend a visit. We will certainly be going back to sample more choices from both the main and dessert menu. Defiantly worth a visit delicious evening.

We were a group of 4 and we were first in on a Sunday lunch time and we were first to receive our meals. Awful roast beef dinner which two of our group had and could not eat. Cold roast potatoes (seemed to be Aunt Bessies and certainly not home made), tough beef, swimming in cold gravy, inedible cauliflower cheese as had strange taste. The only hot thing on the plate was the spoonful of cabbage. We pointed this out to waitress who said "I will tell the kitchen". A while later the landlord came over and said "why didn't you tell us earlier" - we told him that we already had told the waitress within a minute of the meals coming out and which is why he came to our table. He later came back to the table and offered more wine to the one person who was drinking wine as a way of apology. We were very hungry and so asked for dessert. I asked for the apple pie and custard and gently asked the waitress if she could make sure the pie and custard was hot to which she sarcastically replied "EXTRA hot for the gentleman" to which I replied "I didn't ask for EXTRA heat, I asked to make sure it was hot". The apple pie was nice but not home made and it was lukewarm - the custard came out in a separate jug and clearly came out of a tin and not home made and that was cold! We asked for and settled the bill in full by which time the landlord was nowhere to be seen and no offer of restitution was made. This was a terrible experience for all 4 of the group and we will certainly not be back.

We visited today for the first time and received a warm welcome and enjoyed a delicious roast with probably the best cauliflower cheese I’ve had. The staff are delightful very attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely return

Tried the compass after it changed owners a few months ago and had a decent meal. Nice pie and burgers. We were delighted to be able to have a decent pub on the doorstep again. Went tonight and gutted to see it had gone downhill again in such a short space of time. Hubby had the pie again but seems they have resorted back to the microwave, clearly reheated in it and covered with gravy. Ate it but not impressed. I had the lasagna. Obviously originally home cooked but again microwaved before giving it to me and so thermo nuclear and then all claggy on the inside. There was a lady on the table next to us who had the same and left the same amount as me. They were super busy and so didn’t want to make a fuss in front of new young girl servers but we won’t be back. So disappointed. We don’t mind waiting for food but please stop with the microwave again.

Easter Sunday roast at The Compass was a great decision. We had heard great reviews recently of the food, menu, staff etc with the new operators and decided to give it a try. The roast lamb on the specials board was delicious as was the rest of the lunch including the cauliflower cheese. Desserts are generous and very tasty. The staff are happy, attentive and we were checked on regularly throughout our meal. Thank goodness we have a great pub now locally that serves quality food which isn’t from a microwave. We will be back to visit again soon to work our way through the menu and very tempting specials board. Thank you xx

The pub has recently transferred to new owners, and the difference is tangible. Our visits when previously taken over were, to be frank, dreadful. So how nice to be welcomed by the landlord as you walk in. All of the staff were friendly, and attentive. The roast dinner was very good, ( and I am very fussy when it comes to roast meals). Locally sourced meat, and homemade cauliflower cheese, with more then enough to eat. We are local and had pretty much given up on this establishment, but will now seek to eat here more frequently. It is so refreshing to be served fresh food rather than pre packaged frozen, and to have staff who go out of their way to make customers feel welcome. The new owners deserve to do well. I hope people visit to experience the uplift in this establishment themselves.
