I went up on the 28th of may. The food was really nice and staff were amazing. Really friendly!! Only issue there was an older lady at the bar having a go at the poor young lady who was really nice to us. There was no need for it. I hope she says sorry to the young lady.

On booking, We were told that we may have a noisy evening due to an anniversary party which would not affect our service which I was grateful for. We arrived early and they accommodated an earlier dinner for us which was fab. The waitress organised our drinks and we checked on the pie of the day before she got back. We were told by the chef we had a choice of two. When we told the waitress this she said, “you don’t get to choose the pie you want’ (not kidding!) gobsmacked. (Worst customer experience ever). She then went into the kitchen and argued with the chef about this too. We got the pie wanted but she was not happy glaring at us every time she passed us and because she was lazy, lying down on the double pew chair every chance she got. She then did not notice our glasses were empty and we waited for 15 minutes before asking for a second round. A new waitress to the organisation was great and helpful, as was a more experienced lady who we thought ran the staff. The food was good, the pie was good and we thanked the chef for offering us the choice. All in all, ok. Some staff need customer service training. Not the ‘best’ western, but the ‘least western’.

We stayed at the Compass Inn before walking a section of the Cotswold Way into Bath. The staff are friendly but the hotel is rather tired - clean but in need of some renovation. The garden is nice but spoiled by noise from the nearby motorway. Service at the bar was slow and in the restaurant was very slow but food quality was better than expected. Staff were friendly but rather inefficient. Overall it was OK but somewhat overpriced. The highlight was the food at dinner, only spoiled by very slow service.

Stayed 2 nights May 2023. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The room was very clean and comfortable, and quiet. We had our dog with us and enjoyed walking in the spacious grounds. Excellent location, just off the M4, easy to find. We dined in the restaurant both nights, the Sunday lunch was very good indeed as were all the meals including breakfast. Travelling form the M4 the hotel is on your right and if you park in the first car park, you would be well advised to check in first and then locate your room. There is another car park around the back which is accessed from a further 2 turn ins on the right. This car park may be nearer to your room so don't unload your luggage until you have checked in.

We visited today for my Nan’s birthday, and I honestly was not sure what to expect. But I was very impressed. I have tried many roasts around the area but this has to be one of the best I have had in a long time. The Service was amazing, we were served by Libby and she was very attentive. The wine choices were also great. What I loved about the roast dinner was that nothing was an added extra. cauli cheese and extra gravy were included as well as roasted carrot and parsnip, swede, greens, mashed carrot and swede Yorkshire pudding and crispy roast potatoes. Ruby rare beef was so tender and you could ask for it well done if preferred (some of the party did and said it was also lovely) we will definitely be returning. Thanks for a lovely afternoon :)

We stayed here for one night and I can honestly say the staff were outstanding . Having booked a room on a third-party website I rang the hotel to ensure that the booking was accurate . A big thank you to Amy who managed to ensure that the room types were required were available . On arrival the lady in reception was again extremely helpful and insured we were able to find our rooms ( she also managed to tweak our booking once more ) One of the rooms had recently been refurbished to a really high standard , The other room had not yet been refurbished but was still more than adequate . We decided to eat in the restaurant which I can say was an excellent decision . Two of the party chose the chicken which was lovely , one had the fish and chips which was delicious . Service throughout our stay and during checkout was exceptional . Thank you to everyone within the team who made are stay so pleasurable . I would definitely recommend staying here the lovely open fires were also very welcoming.

For many years we have been meeting friends here for Sunday lunch. The standard is always consistent, with ample well cooked portions. I had the beef yesterday which melted in the mouth and was delicious. Our three year old Granddaughter was served with an enormous chicken dinner (adult portion) which she thoroughly enjoyed even though it had obviously been prepared in error for the next table. The only thing we noted was that the service was not as good as usual even though the restaurant was not overly busy. There was a delay taking our order (table booked for 1pm and we didn't eat until 2pm) and we were not offered desserts until we chased the waitress. However, we were not in a rush so it was not too much of a problem. We will return soon!

Was disappointed to find they were not serving burgers the night I was there, although a menu item. Ordered the fish but wasn't anything special - I'm not a fan of breaded fish with skin on, so maybe the only reason I didn't like. Was cooked well. Had a nice selection of specials, but again, nothing I was interested in trying. Cheesecake was great. Staff was friendly, but paid more attention to a large table on the other side of the room than to me. I felt I had to grab attention when I needed something. While I didn't love my meal, I think there are people with different tastes who would enjoy it there, so not dropping the rating too much. The place was clean, a pleasant atmosphere, and food was served relatively quick.

We stopped here on Friday (3rd) early evening, after travelling all day. We ordered a starter and main course each and a I had a medium glass of wine and my husband had a soft drink. The water glasses on our table were dirty and I had to clean them with my napkin before using them, and when my glass of wine arrived I sent it back as the glass was filthy and smelled strongly of cheap perfume or something strange. It was supposedly changed but I had to return that glass too as it was exactly the same. Strangely, the waitress said she couldn't smell anything. The 3rd glass was better but not dishwasher clean. When our food arrived it was warm but not hot and was mediocre at best. I got the impression it had been sitting under a lamp for a while. When my husband paid the bill at the bar he said the whole bar area smelled exactly like my wine glass had smelled? What are they cleaning the bar with? Having read the most recent reviews I can't believe we were in the same restaurant. Maybe we were were unlucky and they had a different chef in on Friday? .It's a lovely building in a picturesque area but we won't be going again when we're next in Bristol.

We were looking forward to this break after the bustle of Christmas, and the photos on the website were very appealing - an ivy-covered country pub on the edge of the Cotswolds. What the photos do not show is the sprawling annexe behind, a maze of dismal corridors of 1970s decor, and dining areas so large that you feel you are eating in a canteen (or given the inadequate heating last weekend) the middle of a garden centre. The ‘room with a view’ (for which we paid extra) depicted part of the garden and a great deal of the adjacent building, just to add to the depression. However, it was spotless and equipped with adequate facilities. The food was fine for pub food and this is exactly what this place should have remained - a ‘place for a pie and a pint’ as stated by a previous reviewer. By attempting to become a conference/function centre it is soulless, characterless and not what one would expect from the images on the website. The two stars are for the friendliness of the staff only.

The Compass Inn, Tormarton has a great combination: helpful staff, great attention to detail and excellent food. I am a wedding photographer and visit wedding venues most weekends throughout the summer months. What stands out about The Compass? The natural surroundings in the place where the ceremony is held and where the wedding breakfast and speeches take place : you are beneath a lovely canopy of green vines throughout your wedding day - this is a real asset and it makes for great photographs! The food was excellent : moist chicken, perfectly cooked vegetables and a sauce with great depth of flavour. Where the Compass really shines as a wedding venue though is in its people: it has been managed for over 20 years by Penny Moynard who has arranged a reliable , hard working staff who couldn't be more helpful -even to small suppliers like me, where they really didn't have to be . Penny met me beforehand, walked round the venue explaining exactly where each part of the ceremony would take place - all this planning helped me to make amazing photos for the couple on their wedding day. On the day Penny and wedding co-ordinator Emily were calm, thorough, supremely well-organised and once again couldn't do enough to help me. Little things like making sure I was supplied with water and tea to stay hydrated on a hot summers day! As well as great service and food the Compass has lots of picturesque spots outside so your couple wedding photos will look great - not all venues have these photogenic backdrops - making this place a great choice if photography is important to you.

After order was placed, we were slightly worries that due to the very reasonable prices of the food, especially for a restaurant attached to a hotel that we should have ordered starters. Service was outstanding and we had two outstanding people serving us, constantly checking to see if we needed drinks or anything else. Food arrived and to our surprise, the quality was perfect. Also glad we did not order starters as the quantity was quite sufficient.

We stopped here for a meal on the way back from Tottenham vs Swansea - The pub/Restaurant is just off Junction 18 of M4. If you can get past the bar mans frosty welcome, then the meal at the restaurant will be worth it. The service was excellent and food prepared and served promptly. There was 6 of us for dinner we all enjoyed the meal and would return, a lovely place to stop and if we are in the area again would pay another visit

We ate quite regularly at The Compass Inn because we always know that we will have a delicious meal and last night was no exception. They have a new menu and it all sounded fab.

Went out for a meal there last night with friends. Firstly there was no atmosphere and the whole place looked run down. The food was average. The scampi was very salty, I had pie which was supposed to be steak and ale, but had very little steak and lots of button mushrooms. I requested a salad instead of veggies, veggies arrived. So I requested the salad and the salad arrived with only lettuce. No tomatoes, radish, or onion in sight. I didn't bother with pudding, my friends had pud, it was average. The staff were friendly, but didn't seem to listen to what we were saying when ordering. Will not be bothering to return.

We were part of a large party, and to be honest I was expecting average food from the set Christmas menu. Wrong. It way surpassed expectations. The food was excellent, and the kitchen was really accommodating - the dairy free was great and when an elderly relative got mixed up about her order on the day, the kitchen simply provided the food that she thought she'd ordered with no fuss or bother. Full marks to the chef and his team.

Been visiting this place for many years. However,on this occasion, usual standard of food was disappointing. My friend and I had ordered a particular sandwhich, previously, and on this visit we praised the quality of it.Unfortunately, this time, not only had no eggs been cooked, the amount was halved, bread and filling, also part of filling not present.Maybe there was chef change, waiter friendly and helpful as always, and surroundings pleasing.Hopefully,on our return there wont be repeat of this.

Stopped here unexpectedly today due to a closure of the M4 on our journey to Wales. Polite and quick service in their delightful Orangery. My tuna sandwich was one of the best I have ever had and my husband's ham and piccalilli looked equally as good.

Good food, nice atmosphere, handy location near Bath, south Glos and motorway. Usefully food served all day. Could do with some redecoration ect. but still well worth using unless you are very fussy.

Had a late lunch with one of my oldest friends, (who I hadn't seen in 25 years), at this cute little pub called The Compass Inn. Nice pint of beer, good service and lovely food. I had the curry. Very tasty.

We were coming back from Reading to Monmouthshire tonight and the traffic was building on the M 4 so we came off at junction 18 and followed the sign a Best Western hotel in the middle of nowhere a gem of a hotel and restaurant. Fantastic menu with an amazing choice something for everyone, a must try .

I did not want to pay the high prices in Bath so decided to stay outside bath and use the park and ride service. So I stayed at The Compass having read mixed reviews but all the reviews are correct certain parts of the hotel require a revamp and other parts are ok. My room was ok but clean and had a mini bar and tea making facilities. But top marks goes to the food breakfast and evening meal "Excellent". Fleshly cook. Plenty of off road parking. Would stay again.

Went for Sunday lunch and we were really impressed by the quality of food. There was a bit of a wait for our roast but it was most definitely worth it! The gravy was very flavoursome and the meat cooked to perfection. We will definitely be going again. Thank-you!

Had a great afternoon/evening here at a wedding. In a beautiful area within easy reach of the M4, but don't use sat nav to find it, check on google! The food was really good, all the staff were helpful and we were able to park our camper van in the grounds. Hope to return and explore the Compass as it was like a maze! They were happy for us to camp there again for a donation to R.N.L.I.

We have just returned from our wedding party at the Compass Inn and we had an absolutely amazing time. The customised hot buffet was superb and we received many unsolicited positive comments. The Orangery provided a unique and atmospheric venue and the management and staff were very friendly and efficient. Our room was comfortable and well equipped. In fact I cannot find anything negative to say about our experience and I have no hesitation or reservation in recommending this venue to anyone.

Watch out for the excess car parking charges payable at the till on your way out if you dare to get comfortable and have more than one drink. The toilets were utterly disgusting. I definitely would not recommend this place.

What a wonderful experience, food was amazing, everything cooked to perfection, starters, main courses and desserts, great service, ideal ambience and such amazing staff, all smiling, polite and super efficient. Prosecco on arrival was a lovely welcome. Favourite member of staff; Joe, lovely young man. Live singer. 15/10 thank you, can’t wait to do it again!

There are, arguably, two reasons to visit Downend. One is on a summer’s afternoon to watch Downend CC play cricket with the bar in full swing and plenty of boundaries being scored as the ground is relatively small; the other is to pay a visit to Melanie’s Kitchen. This delicatessen shop is a positive cornucopia of cheeses, bakery items, biscuits, chutneys, artisan breads etc etc. The man who serves at the cheese counter (who I assume is not Melanie!) is a fountain of knowledge on local cheeses and knows all of the local cheese producers, when their cheeses are at their best and is happy to provide advice to ensure that you will leave well satisfied having enjoyed a sensory and culinary experience second to none. It’s full marks from me.

appalling service, rude management and staff. incompetent serving, was told it was an hours wait for food when other tables after our group received theirs in 10 minutes. Management of cafe refusing to work, simply stood next to the till. Museum was ok but would not recommend to anyone at any point
