The Compass Inn in Sedgemoor

My wife & I visited The Compass this evening for dinner. We hadn’t visited for a couple of years due to having a bad experience then. It couldn’t be any different. The girls who served us were very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent; tasty, fresh veg (not frozen) and hot! We will definitely go back again and make it a regular thing! Thank you.

Decided for an impulsive dinner out locally and went online at 6.20pm and booked a table for 7pm as we had been told The Compass has new owners, we hadn't been there for over a year, thought we would give it a go! The first thing Husband said when we walked in was that "it looked cleaner"! We arrived ten minutes early and was greeted warmly by a chap behind the bar who said welcome and would we like the table immediately. Order the Melted Camembert which arrived about 10 mins later, cooked to perfection, absolutely delicious with loads of sourdough bread on the side. Main course of bellypork with mashed potato, spring greens and homemade gravy. Once again cooked to perfection, really nice. Husband had prawn cocktail and said there were lots of prawns in it, he then went on to have the Ribeye steak with side order of Halloumi fries which he said were the best he's had for a long time. Steak was tender and cooked medium, lots of flavor he told me. Staff were smiling and attentive but not overly so, we didn't feel over bothered which can happen in so many places Thought the whole meal experience was really enjoyable with good portions and the meat was cooked perfectly, excellent, and I am really fussy! - I'm trying to fault something but can't.. Definitely going to go again.

Went here for a meal whilst staying over the road at the Premier Inn. Lovely friendly staff and a very good meal would recommend.

Managed to walk in and get a table for two, after being turned away from numerous places around the bridgewayer area. The team immediately extremely friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Great choice on the menu. We sat in a quiet spot so myself and my friend could have a good catch up. Checked on throughout the evening, food was tasty and delicious. And we shared a dessert. Amazing homemade choice of desserts. We would throughly recommend a visit. We will certainly be going back to sample more choices from both the main and dessert menu. Defiantly worth a visit delicious evening.

Visited on a weekday evening, Great meal, very attentive, friendly and welcoming staff, we will be back again in future.

We were a group of 4 and we were first in on a Sunday lunch time and we were first to receive our meals. Awful roast beef dinner which two of our group had and could not eat. Cold roast potatoes (seemed to be Aunt Bessies and certainly not home made), tough beef, swimming in cold gravy, inedible cauliflower cheese as had strange taste. The only hot thing on the plate was the spoonful of cabbage. We pointed this out to waitress who said "I will tell the kitchen". A while later the landlord came over and said "why didn't you tell us earlier" - we told him that we already had told the waitress within a minute of the meals coming out and which is why he came to our table. He later came back to the table and offered more wine to the one person who was drinking wine as a way of apology. We were very hungry and so asked for dessert. I asked for the apple pie and custard and gently asked the waitress if she could make sure the pie and custard was hot to which she sarcastically replied "EXTRA hot for the gentleman" to which I replied "I didn't ask for EXTRA heat, I asked to make sure it was hot". The apple pie was nice but not home made and it was lukewarm - the custard came out in a separate jug and clearly came out of a tin and not home made and that was cold! We asked for and settled the bill in full by which time the landlord was nowhere to be seen and no offer of restitution was made. This was a terrible experience for all 4 of the group and we will certainly not be back.

We visited today for the first time and received a warm welcome and enjoyed a delicious roast with probably the best cauliflower cheese I’ve had. The staff are delightful very attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely return

Tried the compass after it changed owners a few months ago and had a decent meal. Nice pie and burgers. We were delighted to be able to have a decent pub on the doorstep again. Went tonight and gutted to see it had gone downhill again in such a short space of time. Hubby had the pie again but seems they have resorted back to the microwave, clearly reheated in it and covered with gravy. Ate it but not impressed. I had the lasagna. Obviously originally home cooked but again microwaved before giving it to me and so thermo nuclear and then all claggy on the inside. There was a lady on the table next to us who had the same and left the same amount as me. They were super busy and so didn’t want to make a fuss in front of new young girl servers but we won’t be back. So disappointed. We don’t mind waiting for food but please stop with the microwave again.

Easter Sunday roast at The Compass was a great decision. We had heard great reviews recently of the food, menu, staff etc with the new operators and decided to give it a try. The roast lamb on the specials board was delicious as was the rest of the lunch including the cauliflower cheese. Desserts are generous and very tasty. The staff are happy, attentive and we were checked on regularly throughout our meal. Thank goodness we have a great pub now locally that serves quality food which isn’t from a microwave. We will be back to visit again soon to work our way through the menu and very tempting specials board. Thank you xx

The pub has recently transferred to new owners, and the difference is tangible. Our visits when previously taken over were, to be frank, dreadful. So how nice to be welcomed by the landlord as you walk in. All of the staff were friendly, and attentive. The roast dinner was very good, ( and I am very fussy when it comes to roast meals). Locally sourced meat, and homemade cauliflower cheese, with more then enough to eat. We are local and had pretty much given up on this establishment, but will now seek to eat here more frequently. It is so refreshing to be served fresh food rather than pre packaged frozen, and to have staff who go out of their way to make customers feel welcome. The new owners deserve to do well. I hope people visit to experience the uplift in this establishment themselves.

Great service with very good food at a great price, we decided to go there of a off chance that we could get some food for 6 adults and 4 children and we were very surprised that they could accommodate us, they were very friendly and made us feel welcome. Would definitely go there again.

Went for a family meal and The Compass didn't disappoint. Friendly staff, delicious food and a great family atmosphere. Would 100% return.

Stopped off for lunch, received a warm welcome and shown to a nice window table. Although there wasn’t a drinks menu we ordered our drinks from the waitress. We selected our food from the menu but when the waitress arrived to take our order both the items we had chosen were not available. We selected alternatives and I asked if my alternative pie choice could come with chips instead of mash. The answer was the that the chef would not allow this. I then selected another alternative that did come with chips. Although our alternative food was ok we were disappointed that we were not able to have our original selection. A table next door were not able to order their preferred choice which made at least three items not being available. Plus I cannot see a logical reason why mash could not be substituted with chips, maybe I’m missing something? Not sure we would rush back.

We decided we’d like to have a Sunday Roast as a Lovely Oldy World Pub so as we were not far from Bridgewater we turned off the M5 at junction 25 and then onto the A38 towards Taunton and just on the left hand side is : The Compass Pub : it’s got easy accessible car park and when you enter the Pub you’re immediately greeted by the New Owners and the Bar and Restaurant Staff and we even met the Chef Michael and his assistant David

Since the new ownership the prices and the food have gone drastically downhill, paying £7 for a pint of peroni is a absolute rip off, we both had the Somerset burger paying £17 each, it was unseasoned, chewy and overpriced, will NOT be going back there, this used to be our go to but now not any more.

Ok here is my review after going to this establishment many times with my family, very easy to access by the M5 on junction 24. Parking amicable especially for events birthdays weddings dare I say funerals as well. The establishment has a good variety of alcohols for all as well as non alcohol drinks as well. The menu over the period I have been visiting this establishment has very, the menu when I first visit did this establishment was okay and it gravity got better then they removed certain things from the menu for my taste was disappointing over time they changed the menu again it got better, recently they changed their menu again and it was much much better a good variety of tastes. Facilities available tables or ample as well as a good size bar!. So just a little bit of information about myself as well as my parents were all disabled. Parents are elderly however I'm 45 and disabled person not my choice. Facility wise for sanitary questionable when I say questionable because I'm disabled I find the tight and combined gents not greatm! Honestly they could do with updating especially actually when you sit on the seat that's not secured properly moves about. As I said my parents are a disabled and they find the toilets hard because there is no Disability Furniture for them to get up properly. However I will say that this place is a fantastic place to go new menu needs adjusting put more fish dishes on would be fantastic that's my preference other people are different than me!, I hope this review gives you more information as well as the people that own this establishment will read this and adjust certain things regarding toiletry! Otherwise fantastic place to go highly recommended.

This evening was to celebrate my son and daughter in laws birthday. The Compass has new owners. The meal was excellent and the staff was very welcoming and pleasant. Highly recommended to come here and have food.

This was by far one of the nicest meals that we have experienced. The pub was clean, well decorated, and spacious.Hazel and Zoe were lovely. The meals that we ordered were hot and well presented.Very generous portions. We were particularly impressed with the fact that the chef came and checked our meals were OK. Lovely surroundings, friendly efficient staff and tasty, fresh food...what more does anyone want!!!!!

Big thanks to The Compass for enabling a great family gathering on Boxing Day! A warm, welcoming and friendly pub with good value buffet food, and a lovely area reserved for the 35 of us. Really lovely place for a Friday evening meal. We live just down the road in Taunton and been wanting to come in for a while. Waitress was friendly, Tasha and made us feel welcome. Food was good and we will come back again. Thank you.

Very Welcoming On Arrival By The Gentleman Behind The Bar. Took Order For Drinks Told We Were On Table 19. He Brought Over The Pint Of Guiness to The Table After It Had Settled.(A Nice Jester). Told Us To Look @The Menu And He Would Come Back Which He Did. Ordered 2 Sunday Roasts 1 X Pork buttery mash, a roast parsnip, red onion & carrot medley, Savoy cabbage and peas, with unlimited Yorkies 134 kcal, crisp roasties and rich beef gravy. 1 X Triple Roastbuttery mash, a roast parsnip, red onion & carrot medley, Savoy cabbage and peas, with unlimited Yorkies 134 kcal, crisp roasties and rich beef gravy, We Were Offered PIGS IN BLANKETS @ 1.49 CAULIFLOWER CHEESE @ 1.99 PORK, ORANGE & FIG STUFFING 99P Asked If I Could Change The Savoy Cabbage Etc For CAULIFLOWER CHEESE. Told No Have To Pay For It Witch Supprised Me. Now The Problems- No Roast Beef On The Tripple Roast Meal. No Parsnip On The Pork Roast But 2 Pieces Of Crackling . The Triple Roast Was Swimming In Gravy (Perhaps The Beef Floated Of The Plate) HA HA. No Return Visit To The Table By The Waitres To Take Sweet Or Coffee Or Drinks Orders. IT Was Not Busy So Very Surprised About This. Had To Go Up To The Bar To Get Bill And Pay. The Waitress Was Informed When Paying The Bill And She Spoke To The Chef Who Said It Was Put On The Plate IT WAS NOT There. She Refunded 50% Of The Two Drinks. Very Disapointed. Not Sure If We Will Visit Again. Shame After Our Last Visit And It Was No Way As Good.

We have visited this pub on a number of occasions previously when travelling to the South West. We’ve always been happy with everything until our recent visit in early November. My wife ordered the Chicken Tikka which disappointingly contained just 4 small pieces of chicken. It was more like a soup than a curry. It was also served with chips rather than the advertised rice - which my wife didn’t want. My Hunters Chicken was advertised as the ‘Signature Dish’. It was clearly pre-prepared and re-heated in the kitchen. It was pretty uninspiring and cheap tasting. Hardly a ‘Signature Dish’. No one did a table check, which I would have expected. As we were paying, we were asked if everything was ok, which obviously it wasn’t. The response from the staff member was ‘We are changing the menu on Monday’ and ‘I will pass your comments to my Team Leader’. I’m still not sure what to do with that feedback. It certainly didn’t make us feel any better. The pub was cold, uninviting and virtually empty - a pale imitation of the busy place it was only a couple of years back. It had the feeling of a place being run down towards closure. If you’re picking somewhere to eat in the area, go to the White Willow pub next door. A far warmer and welcoming place. We will in future. Based on this visit, I would give The Compass zero stars if I could.

decent food but unfortunately shocking staff behaviour. i went for a birthday dinner with friends and the waitress was giving us death stares and judging us the whole time. made us very uncomfortable and ruined the atmosphere. she was very patronising as we ordered our food and drinks which made us feel quite embarrassed (for no reason). multiple waitresses ignored us calling them over and one girl took away our cutlery and sauces before we were finished without asking.

We have been here a few times before and have always been more than happy with the quality of the food and service. Unfortunately on this occasion I was left extremely disappointed! I ordered the Fish Pie which costs just under £15 and a pint of Mad Goose beer. When the Fish Pie arrived at our table the pastry top looked rather pale and probably could have done with a few more minutes in the oven as could the chips that were served up on mine and my partners plates. Upon cutting through the pastry top it was immediately obvious that the creamy leek sauce had either ‘split’ or not been cooked properly! I raised this with the waiter when he returned to check if everything was ok, but said to him that I’d have a go at eating it as we were short on time and I didn’t want to send it back and wait for something else. I tipped the sauce out of the pie dish onto my plate and it was very difficult to find any decent chunks of seafood, in fact all I found was a total of 1 small prawn (not King Prawn as stated on the menu) and 3 thumbnail sized pieces of Salmon and that was it. I don’t know if this pie recipe is cooked fresh or bought in so I feel it could be unfair to blame the chef on the night for the recipe, however the sauce should not of been served ‘split’. Unfortunately the serving staff failed to return to our table in a timely manner to clear the plates etc so I was unable to raise this further with them. The bar was also busy so I was reluctant to take my plate of food up and talk things through with the staff. The Mad Goose was also cloudy which it hasn’t been previously. My partners fish and chips were acceptable though.

Charming place with exceptionally courteous service. Our order consisted of 3 identical steaks and a chicken curry. While 2 of the steaks were good, unfortunately, one fell short of our expectations due to the meat not being as tender as expected. As for the chicken curry, it was enjoyable, but the meat could have been a bit more tender. Considering our experience, we would rate it an average of 3.4

Went here for a birthday party, service wasn’t great food came at different times, very small menu and then even then you couldn’t order half the items as they weren’t in stock. Then ordered and they then got the order wrong but they said what we ordered they didn’t have either. Tried to order drinks and even then they didn’t have some of them. A friend told me this was a quality old school feel of a pub. She was spot on. Lovely staff, quick service, lush scampi and chips. Plenty of privacy to have a chat with an old friend. Will be coming back with my wife next time.

On a recent trip for a short holiday to South Devon, I looked for somewhere to stop off for a break. After much research, I chose The Compass for its location which is very close to an M5 junction and its old world character. We were not disappointed. This stone built oak beamed pub makes for a pleasant stop, serving good food and welcoming staff. After a very pleasant hours break, we left refreshed and ready to complete the drive down to Torbay.

We went as a family of 6 for Sunday lunch and we couldn’t fault it, lovely and attentive staff and food was delicious, we will definitely be visiting again soon

Love coming to the compass for the weekly quiz on Wednesday. Quite often will have food, coffee or a desert whilst there (why not) and it’s always nice. Services is always very friendly too, especially from Hazel. Would recommended!

Ultra ultra clean everywhere plus stayed for lunch and had an amazing bacon steak thing with bubble and squeak which was amazing, also gluten free!!!!!
