The Colintraive Hotel in Argyll & Bute

Living in Argyle there are often times that one really despairs of the general lack of effort or care that is so obvious in many eateries that carry on serving overpriced cheap quality unimaginative food and only survive because the competition is just as bad and fortunately for them so many punters are clearly prepared to pay for and eat rubbish. Thats why the Colintraive is such an oasis of quality in this culinary wasteland where the menu is interesting and full of inspired dishes and choosing is difficult because its all so good ! We have visited many times and unfailingly have received excellent friendly service from Rachael and David accompanied with excellent and delicious high quality food at reasonable prices and always leave feeling thoroughly satisfied . Our only grumble is the coffee which like many places in Argyle is too strong and bitter ...but thats our personal taste . Overall excellent and can't recommend highly enough .

Warm quaint public rooms with log burners, mellow lighting, nice bar, and friendly staff. Excellent dinner, beautifully cooked and good portions. Best cheese and biscuits and coffee I’ve ever had. Will definitely be back! One of the best places in Cowal.

Unfortunately this place has lost its great food experience. We used to stay at the hotel and travelled from quite far away for the food alone but things have changed since the ownership has changed. It was overpriced for the size of the portions and quality of the food. Won't be travelling to eat there again.

We are so lucky to have the Colintraive as our local hotel / restaurant. We hadn't eaten there for a while but decided to treat ourselves - what a wonderful experience. My squid starter was stunning - I think cooked over fire - and so tasty. The main, an aubergine dish served with pearl barley was just as good. So not only wonderful food but the space was warm and welcoming too. Can't wait for another visit!

Came for lunch. Hotel is nice generously quaint or maybe a touch dated, but staff were welcoming and food was really lovely, haggis Bon Bon’s, langoustine and a mushroom risotto for starters which we all really enjoyed. Mains were lamb, traditional fish and chips and a schnitzel all equally well received. Worth the drive to visit both for the food and glorious scenery on the way

Initially we were disappointed, disgusted and angry. Having booked on recommendation, we found we were seated in a bar, where dogs are permitted. Seats were dirty and we did not want to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary in such conditions. However, management, upon hearing that we had an issue, were very quick in arranging a spot in the dining room. Food was outstanding and reasonably priced.

What an awesome spot! So happy I found this place while traveling around the area. Comfortable rooms, delicious food, fun pub, all the things you could ask for on an over night visit. Food was so good we ate there twice (dinner and breakfast). I loved the customizable breakfast menu. They are so accommodating!

We just had another superb meal at one of the best eateries in the area. Quality ingredients beautifully prepared. Absolutely delicious and well delivered.

First class service and great food!! Popped in here for Sunday lunch with the Cowal Heritage Society and, despite being late and having more guests than anticipated, we were given a warm welcome and accommodated with ease. The Schnitzel was to die for...with possibly the tastiest new potatoes I've ever had...and feedback from the other diners was similarly positive. Top notch stuff, top class staff and we will be back soon!!

What a friendly place this is! I made a phone booking a couple of days before for my family group of 8 at 1.30pm. We were staying in Largs and the group included 3 generations of the family so it is always tough keeping everyone happy. Wall to wall sunshine meant we sat outside much to the annoyance of my 85 year old Dad who doesn't like picnics! Anyway he was outvoted 7 - 1! We were a bit early however the staff gave us a warm welcome and we wandered down to the ferry terminal and enjoyed the views over to Bute. Back to the beer garden where we sat on a large table and we had a lovely relaxed lunch. I had the cod with a crumb topping & new potatoes - excellent. My wife had a grilled courgette which was really tasty too. All in all a friendly lunch - and reasonable at £175 for 8 of us considering the quality and beautiful location. Thanks.

This gem of a place is such a find. Amazing food. Really varied menu. Fresh and perfectly cooked. Really really tasty. Staff brilliant and friendly. Great atmosphere. Loved it. Stayed overnight in a lovely room. The Owner is so welcoming and helpful, chatty and attentive. Such a fab place. Would highly recommend.

Visited for lunch on a surprisingly busy Tuesday, so we were glad we had booked. Shown to a lovely table in the window of the restaurant with beautiful views. Staff were obviously busy and service was a little slow but that gave us time to peruse the interesting, well thought out menu, whilst chatting. There really is something for everyone whether you are looking for a burger or grilled octopus. We chose the wild garlic soup which came with delicious home made bread, grilled octopus and baked cod. All were superb and the portion size perfect for lunch. Importantly, everything was piping hot and served on hot plates, big thumbs up! Staff were lovely and friendly, thank you!

This was my 2nd visit to the Hotel for food and I was excited to come back after a great experience the first time, however I was really disappointed. The food was hit and miss for the people in our group. Myself and another of our party had lamb cooked 2 ways, one slow cooked (which was delicious) and the other was a chunk of undercooked, chewy, verging on "off" in flavour lamb, or possibly mutton because the flavour was so overpowering. A cauliflower "steak" was equally disappointing as it was undercooked and came with no sides apart from a sprinking of salad, clearly not enough food for an adult. Chicken goujons with bone or cartilage in it, that an already fussy tween refused to eat any more of. The portions were small in general and although I appreciate that the cost of ingredients has increased, i don't feel the meal represented value for money. This brings me to say that I would have absolutely brought this to the attention of the staff (and I appreciate them being busy) but they seemed to be consistently MIA and didn't come to check on us that much, to ask how the food was or to ask if we needed any more drinks etc. By the time the plates were being cleared the moment had passed and we felt they just wanted us to order dessert and leave. All in all not the best experience.

As always when we visit made to feel immediately welcome even with two dogs in tow. Food was fantastic and the menu selection wide enough for most tastes. I always struggle to choose as I love so much of the menu especially the local seafood...

Wonderful food with amazing hosts. Langoustines in amazing garlic butter. Made me feel like I was my holidays even in October. Fish and chips were delicious and super helpful with children’s options and don’t miss out on the chocolate brownies.

Went here yesterday. Warmly welcomed and looked after by a happy couple who had just moved back from London. Vegan versions of food available and plant milk happily offered for our coffee. Food was excellent.

Fantastic ! This place is a gem ! Beautiful food wines gins whiskies and service. Crispy Olives and Haggis Bon Bons are a must.The Attenbourgh Room is a dual aspect room with stunning views of the loch and great to spend an afternoon in if you need to look out at the rain for a while.Great walks and the ferry to Bute 400m away.....Cannot recommend it enough and they take dogs.....

Had researched in advance before leaving for our holiday in Scotland and based on location and reviews had emailed to booked a table for Tuesday lunch in September and during COVID19.Had been on the ferry in the morning visiting Isle of Bute and now having lunch. The menu had a good choice, initially seems pricey as others had commented but like my husband said having been forewarned he was prepared and also agreed afterwards- worth every penny. They had good COVID19 procedures set up which did not spoil our enjoyment. Was amazed how busy and how nearly everyone had booked ahead for a Tuesday lunch in September but this is needed during COVID19 Wow loved the food, battered olives so moorish and went well with my local Oyster gin, haggis bonbons with brown sauce also delicious.I had the Gigha Halibut and husband the Armaleish farm rump Fabulous meal and excellent value for money

Had a really good meal of langoustine, cullen skink, fish and chips, halibut and Colintraive mess, all served by a really friendly, efficient waiter and a lovely barmaid.Initially, thought the prices were a bit steep but the quality of the produce proved worth the cost. One tiny comment, the Colintraive mess needed more meringue and less cream. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening, including the banter with other diners, unusual in these Covid times.

Interesting use once only paper menu in time of Covid. Great cooking by chef proprietor Joe Burnett using first class local produce. Well chosen wine list albeit overpriced. Friendly and helpful staff. Had heritage beetroot with lovely goats curd and pine nuts.Not overdressed and good portion. The langoustines were fabulous and beautifully prepared. The beef onglet was perfectly cooked. The chocolate brownie was cooked to order and the locally roasted coffee was excellent.

We had a wonderful dinner at the Colintraive Hotel. The menu was interesting, with plenty to choose from. All our dishes were locally sourced, fresh and delicious. The service was attentive, friendly and efficient We’ll definitely be back when we’re next in the area!

We have holidayed many times in Rothesay but never taken the ferry over to hotel before. Although we were earlier than planned , it was not a problem. Due to Covid restrictions we had a table in what had apparently been games rooms, it was fine however. Staff very pleasant and hard working and owner came over to speak to us asking if everything was ok. Food was excellent , only niggle could have done with more meringue and little less cream in my Collintraive mess. We will definitely return on our next Rothesay visit .

Had a lunch today with my wife drove round from Strachur. This was an excellent meal food was all first class . Good helpful and friendly staff . The crispy olives starter is a must really addictive . I would definitely be returning whenever possible.

Fantastic lunch in the sun! We were late for lunch but the staff kindly squeezed us in for a super lunch!! We’ll definitely pop back!!

On one of our few sunny days we stopped for drinks and dinner , along with Rory our dog. Cold beer and gin in the garden after a walk along the beach doesn't get much better. A table in the bar with fresh langoustines in garlic butter and warm crunchy sourdough was memorable , followed by Fish & Chips - but the haddock clearly came from a decent sized fish , beautifully cooked in what we agreed was was the lightest seasoned tempura batter we can remember , and excellent chips. The kitchen cares what is served , and it shows. We'll be back soon for the scallops , and the rest of the menu. This is worth the trip.

I've stayed in many of this sort of Hotel on the West Coast and this is the best of it's kind. Food is classic dishes but with nice local touches thrown in, the bar is lively (including a local man playing acoustic guitar v. v. well) without being raucous, the staff are relaxed but attentive and have high standards. Great experience. First Tripadvisor review. That's how much we liked it.

Homemade chips!!!! Beer batter light as anything and fresh beautifully cooked.... Very happy!! Unfortunately had no room for dessert but my family did... Rhubarb meringue, lemon posset & sticky toffee pudding ... I wish I could have!!!!!!Several times.popped in the back to play with Maggie.. beautiful tabby cat!!! We arrived for a late Sunday lunch, and were very pleasantly surprised that we weren't limited to the ubiquitous Sunday Roast - we're vegetarian. We had a fabulous welcome from everyone except the cat, who was most affronted when I took its seat in front of the fire. The cask beer was in great condition -as it should be for its exorbitant price - and the quality of cooking was superb. The hosts' friendliness and energy were infectious, and we came away vowing that we'd return.

Having enjoyed a three-night stay in November, and looking for a similar short break in January, we returned to the Colintraive Hotel and it was again an excellent place to spend a few lazy(-ish) days. The food is top notch, for my pescatarian wife as much as for my omnivore self. Best venison I've ever eaten - they had me with 'start with a large lump of butter to sear it...' Really good wine selection, and they keep the beer well with lots of local options like Fyne Brewery's Easy Trail. It's a Goldilocks place, not super-posh, not in any way down-market, you're made to feel welcome by the staff and the locals at the bar, it's warm, cosy and unpretentious. We'll be back again.

My husband and I stayed at the Colintraive Hotel for 3 nights between Christmas and New Year. The new owners Clare and Joe made us feel at home as soon as we walked through the door. We were shown to our room with beautiful views over the fields and loch. The food is amazing, so eating in the restaurant or in the cosy bar is an absolute must if you are visiting the area. I would definitely recommend the haggis bonbons and venison, and if you like seafood the langoustines in garlic butter and seared scallops are incredible!! We will definitely be back.

The warm welcome, the log burner and the subtle lighting create a glowing cosy ambiance at this country hotel. The menu is exciting - not the run of the mill pub grub but a menu you actually have to read. They use locally sourced, seasonal ingredients with flair. The hotel is beautifully situated, even in bad weather, it's an inviting place to be. We will definitely be returning - we enjoyed a lovely relaxed evening with great food and wine.

Just back from a wonderful weekend at The Colintraive Hotel. We arrived on a cold November Friday evening and received an incredibly warm welcome from the hostess Clare. Fires were lit in bar and dining room and locals propping up the bar for Friday drinks. A real buzz about the place, we couldn't wait to get settled in for the evening. Our room was at the front of the house with stunning views and a big luxurious bed and en suite. We ate multiple times in their bar and restaurant. The food was exquisite, using locally sourced ingredients, expertly cooked. The wine list was great too with some old favourites and some more unusual offerings too. What I loved was the really friendly atmosphere, and in the bar everyone was conversing with each other and having a great time. Cannot wait to go back and believe this will be the first of many trips!!

A great place if you want some great locally sourced food and good views. Not many places like this around, it’s a contemporary pub with high quality meals, good wines, and a warm rustic atmosphere, also seems like the have a unique menu each day. Visited just for lunch and were so happy dogs are allowed at bar section. The staff were really friendly, helpful and cheerful, it always makes such a difference. Staff were also really helpful with my dietary requests and made the effort to provide me with many options. When it’s warmer there are some lovely benches out the front for the sea view, and inside there is a fireplace. We hopped across on the ferry by foot from Bute ( left the car at Bute side), glad we did. This would be a really great place to stay the night too. The food was very tasty, but one person in our groups main meal was very small, probably a starter size, which was a bit embarrassing as they finished it in minutes. Other portions were huge, chips are very tasty, menu is not really cheap, but the food quality, ingredients used and services easily makes up for this. Probably my favourite place for miles around.
