It was as delicious as it was praised. The best fish and chips I've ever had. However, I can't say the same for the staff. It didn't make much sense that they brought the bill in a rude tone as if we hadn't finished our drinks and we hadn't even asked for it.

It's gone down in my opinion, previously had a great fish supper from here, but recently had obviously reheated chips and scrapings also the fish batter was chewy rather than crispy. I find it bizarre that you can't order a takeaway tea with your fish and chips when they serve tea in the sit in cafe.

Utter rubbish for premium prices, chips weren’t cooked properly but more Importantly the cod would have been the cheapest they bought. It wasn’t even white, it was brown and the batter was soggy. Save your money, oh and the must peas looked so bad that I daren’t go near them!

Without question, Oban's No 1 fish and chip shop & restaurant. There are 3 chip shops to choose from and this one's the furthest walk from the harbour , but it's definitely the one to sample. There is a small restaurant at the back and whether it's eat in or take away, you'll enjoy a real local feast. The chips and other fried foods (Cod, Haddock, Chicken and Haggis etc) are always freshly fried and not held in a warm counter for long periods of time. Service is ok too, although you will probably have to wait for 15 minutes at busy times (because it's all fried to order). Fridays are the crazy shift because traditionally, people in the UK would eat fish (a passover from more religious times). The queues may go out the door and along the street, but don't be tempted from walking to the next shop as you'll be missing out on the Best 'chippy' or as we say ' fish-supper'

Main point to take from my visit here was disappointing! I watched the food come out the fryers fresh, but when opening containers no more than 5 minutes later, discovered the fish was overcooked/dry, yet the batter was very soggy and flavourless, and chips were incredibly greasy and sticking to the box. Expected better. Also to add...very almost £20 for a fish supper of this poor quality is FAR too expensive.

All I can say is it was average, we got the fish & chips tea which included fish, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter and a cup of tea, we ate it because we’d just arrived from Glasgow but it wasn’t the best. Service was quick & friendly but asking for a 5-20% tip was a joke, it’s not the U.S! How this place can use the words 'Rick Stein' is beyond me. Had take away from here last and they were inedible. Served by a young lad who spent more time on his food (no hygiene standards here), who has obviously never been taught customer service or even how to speak properly to customers, we got the greasiest undercooked overpriced fish and chips we've ever had. The curry sauce and gravy had the consistency of diarroeah and curry powder and the copius amounts of watered down vinegar didn't even make it edible! Please don't sit on the back of a review from over 10 years ago. I'm sure Rick Stein wouldn't be impressed being associated with such an awful place.

Let me start by saying that for what it is famous for, i.e. fish and chips, it is good. If you are looking for something that is not fried it is quite difficult also because it is not always specified whether the dish is breaded or not so it is better to ask. The salt and pepper calamari is fried and heavy.

The best fish and chips we’ve ever had! I took my family and dog here for lunch, and left full and very happy. Top quality fish, light and crispy batter on the perfectly cooked haddock, good house made tartar sauce and mushy peas, and crispy chips with no grease at all. My wife and I had the Fish Tea, thick haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce, bread, lurpak butter, and pot of tea for £17.50 each. A good price for the level of quality. My 6 year old had the kids meal large sausage, chips, drink and ice lolly for £7.50. Again the sausage was good quality, he loved it and devoured the lot (apart from a few chips - big portion for a 6 year old). It’s so good to see a chippy turning out this kind of quality for a reasonable price (especially when you look at alternative restaurants). If you’re stopping in Oban you won’t be disappointed.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
