Group of 6 went for an evening meal last Friday. Lovely girl behind bar trying to serve food, drinks and take orders, lengthy wait trying to order despite only one other table as poor girl juggling to many things at once. Only one beer of three available. Three of us wanted fish and chips...none available. Food we ordered was extremely below par with one inedible. Sadly a very poor experience. Manager took 10 minutes to appear to address our complaint, refunded one meal, no apology, quite shocking. Worst pub meal any of us had ate. Advise to avoid eating at this establishment or prepare to be disappointed.

Popped in for nosh and a drink. Adult scampi and chips looked like a child’s portion compared to my Chicken burger and chips. Homemade slaw- no such thing, pickles 🤭only a slice of a pickled gherkin!! Do not ask for tomato sauce , looked diluted and slightly transparent to chilli sauce .staff attentive

On arrival spoke to a employee not that friendly got shown the way to the room and given the keys was told what time breakfast served when stated not there for breakfast as leaving at 5am to get ferry was told to leave by fire exit and to be quiet. Nothing else said room was clean but only warm water in shower mains sockets were 2 extension leads had to put kettle on bedside cabinet to reach the plug had to ask for couple of cups for tea as non in room, went into Penzance for food as wasn't told they served food only found out when we returned. Once the pub shuts there is no staff on site so if you need anything then you're to fend for yourself. As we weren't having breakfast thought may have been offered a supplement as a replacement but nothing or at least a refund of the cost of 2 breakfasts but nothing maybe we didn't fit in with them. But definitely wouldn't recommend staying there and was definitely not worth the £135 for one night with no breakfast and being ignored.

We came here for a quick drink and bit of food. I've never been to Gulval before, the pub building is amazing and the interior is clean and modern. Overall the experience was good, with friendly staff and a good range of drinks. A couple of minor points though. The fruit machine is in a bit of a weird place, basically preventing customers from accessing one half of the pub when someone is playing. The food was really oily, the garlic bread almost had a fried bread taste. Also I was halfway through ordering two drinks and the bar staff had to help with bringing out food for a massive table which took probably at least 5 minutes, it was fine but it literally took less than 5 seconds to pour my second drink. So I'm not sure why they didn't just finish serving me, it's not as though their food would go cold? Anyway would come back.

If you see my comments on the room you might think I didn't like it. We had no milk with the complimentary team/coffee. Only a single bath towel for a couple/double room and no AC in a very warm room. Yet for all that it was still an excellent place to stay. Me and my wife travel quite a lot so I've stayed in a variety of hotels. If I hadn't I'd probably have given it five stars as it was very reasonably priced and lovely. Just a few small niggles that stopped it being excellent but I will certain book another room next time we're in Penzance.

I cannot recommend this place. This was a most disappointing hotel. On arrival at 8 p.m. there was a sign on the bar that the kitchen was closed; apparently some kitchen issue had occured just before we arrived but that's not what other guests said, and the host failed to message us. The bedroom was reasonable and the bed comfortable but there was no shower or other bathroom products provided, the washstand and bedside lights did not work, we had to ask for toilet paper, there was no suitcase stand and to top it all, the route to the main exit was locked at 10 p.m. and we were expected to navigate a dimly lit upstairs, downstairs route through a fire escape with stacked beer barrels to another locked door. The host was clearly a stressed one man band as he was on his own in the evening and he appeared in a chef's top to cook breakfast, which was very average. The whole place had the air of being run down: few customers, no staff and low on stock. There was so much wrong.

went in for a drink and staff friendly and accommodating and later for a evening meal and I had fish and chips/mushy peas the chips fine but fish was non-existent in a heavily laden batter so couldn't taste what fish there was between the batter.. It could of been a one off but my partner had similar fish/chips but left the batter ... would go back for a drink as resonable priced but not eat again as staff friendly and a relaxed atmosphere.

Shame really, I wanted this to be our local but we went for a meal there yesterday and my fish and chips were dripping in grease, so much so that the fat dripped over off the fish onto the table, even the chips were soggy and greasy. I think they just needed draining for a bit. Hubby loved his steak pie but he's not over fussy, 😂 the sticky toffee pudding wad nice though. Barmaid was very polite and efficient. We stayed one night. Originally booked two but had to cancel second night. Despite two phone calls and an email before we arrived to confirm this we had no response. On arrival room was cold. We tried to turn radiators on but with no response. Room was large with two rattan (outside) chairs and coffee table, a bed with two mattresses( incredibly soft and unstable) mismatched bedside cabinets( one of which was a bathroom cabinet), a built in frame wardrobe, and TV on wall. Tea and coffee making facilities provided. Bathroom was large, cold with cubicle shower, water was warm when you turned tap fully on. Nice clean white towels. Room had no charm, finesse or aesthetic appeal. Modern curtains and mismatched prints, modern bed, mismatched furniture. It really wouldn’t take much to improve. Sea themed curtains , white bed linen, sea prints, few knock knacks in bathroom, white bedroom furniture. Room was clean but mildew/mould around window, above shower and in corners. Needs a fan, heating and window opening. We came down to breakfast. They weren’t expecting us!?!? Why not? We had paid for B&B. They said a full English(no choice) was quickly delivered. I asked for orange juice and coffee. That was delivered straight away before breakfast. Plenty of toast but no gluten free bread for me. Suggest choice of yoghurt, and always keep individual slices of GF bread in freezer. Staff were lovely and rose to challenge if getting breakfast out.No heating on in morning. Would I stay again? Yes if I had to, but would look elsewhere first.

Loads of meat and a choice from pork, beef, chicken and nut roast served with fresh vegetables and delicious gravy. £8.50 and £10.00, the smaller one is plenty and the larger one will satisfy a larger appetite. If you can manage a dessert then they are £4.50 each and large. Can recommend the homemade apple crumble. Service is excellent and the premises are typical country pub and immaculately clean. I stay in Gulval on mini breaks frequently...have had a few superb meals here in particular a roast in April this year which was stunning. Needed a doggy bag to take the delicious roast potatoes off with me. Has the pub changed hands again.? We were driving around Cape Cornwall in the rain today desperate for somewhere nice for lunch....my husband said....Gulval. cold streamers. ........we love weatherspoons....butthe one in penzance is past its sell by date..never had a bad meal or service there. Also Had a 90 year old with us....Coldtreamers is a great pub but the food today really let it down. My husband is a particularly good cook and was very disappointed with the burger....the cheap bun fell apart....homemade beefburger was tasteless... My vegetarian curry was what id expect from a teenager bringing home from cookery class..I make a delicious sweet potatoes veg curry regularly. Which is delicious......I'm sorry but this wasn't enjoyable. It was edible and my husband delicious chips meant it was eaten.. Nannies prawn cocktail was fine. We always support these type of businesses....but left very underwhelmed with a £40.00 bill inc drinks. 2nd time in 2 weeks we have had this experience.....somewhere else. We never have a bad meal in a well known eatery...we get value..we get enjoyable meal each and every time. Would certainly try the roast again.

Missing our roast dinners this summer! so my friend and I went to the Coldstreamer for a roast. We were early around 12-20pm and the young lady took our order and we didn't have to wait long before our meals arrived but what a disappointment. I ordered a duo meat meal which was pork and beef that was sliced so thin I think if you held it up to the light you would be able to see through it!! It looked like it came in a tray with gravy from the cash and carry, the potatoes tasted like they had been warmed up time and again and were hard to cut. All in all a big disappointment. Needles to say we will not be returning.Complete waste of £13-95!!!

Booked a table for 5 adults and 2 children. The interior of the pub is quite nice with lots of references to the local history, but we were there for the food. Generally the meals served were average, but my meal in particular was poor. I had the steak pie and chips. Greasy chips and chewy inedible steak filling. Did I complain, no. Why, because I came to eat with my family and if my meal was replaced I may as well have come on my own. I have family who live in Gulval so am a frequent visitor to the area and have eaten here in previous years, but I think this will be my last meal visit.

For families it is perfect, it does not have a tourist menu, you will not find a pastie here. Prices are Weatherspoon level so if you have kids it's a good place to hunt down. Historic, busy, pretty and very family orientated. As it is so busy you will find a good atmosphere. Not a guy's pub or a dropout hangout. Menu has a lot of options. Took my partner and won out for a nice carvery for mothers day so she could have a nice meal for her special day only for her to order the nut roast as she has been vegetarian all of her life but when the food came out the gravy on the meal had lamb juices in it, she could tell that it was and asked me to check as I've only recently gone peskitarian so know what meats taste like and could confirm it was the taste of lamb in the gravy, we asked to have it changed only for the lady to tell us it's definitely veggie gravy but the next "veggie roast" came out only to have the same lamb gravy on it but the is time with added bits of lamb in the actual gravy this time, completely disgusted with the service as well as the chef if he thinks it's ok to serve the same thing twice to only to hope we wouldn't notice.

My partner took me and my son here today for a mother's day meal. After hearing such good things about it, I was really looking forward to it. I ordered a veggie nut roast and our son had a KIDS veggie burger and chips. When the roast came out I ate a little and it tasted odd so I tried a bit of the gravy and it tasted the way meat smells (I've been veggie almost 27 years so can tell when something's not veggie) I asked my partner to try it and he said it was definitely lamb gravy. We told the waitress who said it 100% wasn't and they didn't make lamb gravy. To which we pointed out on their specials board that today's special was lamb roast with lamb gravy. She then changed her mind and said they did do it but they'd ran out at lunch. Another waitress bought out a replacement roast. The gravy smelled of meat again, my partner tasted it and said it tasted exactly the same, it even had bits of meat floating in it this time!! We sent it back again and asked for a veggie burger instead to be told a while later they actually didn't have any left. So I ended up with a bowl of chips that were dripping with grease and covered in massive chunks of salt so couldn't eat hardly any of them. When we came to pay, the chef came out and started arguing with my partner saying it was vegetarian and trying to say the piece of meat was potato... I've personally never known potato to be fibrous and fleshy!! He also tried to charge us adult price for the kids meal, his reason being he wasn't charging for the 2 roasts that were sent back!! Bearing in mind I only ate the tiniest piece of nut roast off of the first one so we shouldn't be charged for them anyway as they were inedible! He was incredibly rude to us. If you are vegetarian or have any allergies I definitely WOULDNT recommend as the chef seems to have an issue with vegetarian as they apparently served over 80 veggie roasts today with that exact same gravy on it!

We have driven/walked past The Coldstreamer numerous times whilst staying in the Penzance area - this year we actually went in and were pleasantly surprised. The property is far more spacious than it looks from outside and is full of interesting memorabilia concerning the origins of it's name. The bar itself has a good selection of drinks and the Sunday lunches are generous and well prepared. There is a choice of eating in the designated dining area or in the bar. Staff were friendly but courteous. There is a pleasant outside seating area where you can enjoy a drink whilst watching the comings and goings of Gulval village life. Highly recommend.

Visited here last night with family some of who were visiting from Essex. There was only 4 of us. Restaurant wasn't too busy. Both pork chop meals were very dry and tough to eat, the mixed grill tasteless, my steak pie however was lovely. Apple pies/crumbles ordered for dessert...where was the crumble? And the pie was soggy so all were returned. Charlotte the waitress was very apologetic but considering we had pretty much complained about all of our food, it would have been better if Nick, the chef/owner had also come out of the kitchen and apologised. Yes, I'm a local and live in Gulval and had highly recommended this place to my family because my previous visits here have been very good. Hopefully this was just a blip, I will go back again just to see coz it's good to support local businesses when most are failing in Penzance.

A fairly extensive menu, good food, generous portions and atmospheric low beamed ceilings are the selling points. Dark with no views and inattentive service are the drawbacks. If your focus is the meal it’s a 4*. For those for which waiting staff proficiency matters, this is no better than average.

Great meal after a morning out and about. Kids age 13 & 11. One ate from the adults menu the other from the kids menu. Enough choice and all 4 meals were lovely. Lasagne, fish pie, burger, bbq chicken.

There seemed to be a lot of hype about this pub! Food, views of Michael’s Mount etc.

Beer was good, people were nice, wifi worked! Not much more to say or need from a local pub. Did the job for us.

I went here last night with my partner, we had been in a few times but never ordered food just went in for drinks. However, we were very glad we did. My partner had the XL burger and said it was gorgeous and one of the beat he’d had in a while - huge portion too! I had the beef lasagne and it was lovely, it was just like perfect comfort food. It wasn’t too busy and could sit where we liked, staff we’re very helpful and friendly and the bar is well stocked! Will be coming back for food before our holiday ends, thank you!

Lots of people in Penzance but the Coldstreamer is tucked away in Gulval. Good beer, very good food and service in a relaxed atmosphere for lunch. The evening menu look worth a try as did the Tuesday tapas evening special.

Tidy pub in a charming hamlet just outside of Penzance. Well kept bar & good if basic, food. Visited on a weekday for lunch. Though there are tables outside, chose to sit inside. There were three or 4 other parties enjoying lunch, one barmaid. She clearly told us to sit where we liked and to order at the bar, which we did. We did not have to wait long for the food to come out but instead of two classic cheeseburgers, two hamburgers came out. When questioned, we were told we had ordered classic burgers, not cheese. We were were offered two slices of cheese to rectify the situation which we accepted. The lettuce on the plate was past its prime. The chips were good. When we went to pay, we found that cheeseburgers HAD been input to the order/billing system and we had been charged for them along with a lemonade that we Had NOT ordered no received.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch a week ago, I had not been for a long time but friends had told me the food was good. We were seated immediately and ordered four roast beefs, the pro’s were that food arrived really quickly and it was a huge plateful. The cons were that the waitress asked us if we wanted anything else and we asked for some horseradish, she was gone for a while and then she came back in saying that she couldn’t find it in the kitchen! The other problem was that the potatoes were burnt and had obviously been reheated, there was a lot of beef but it wasn’t very warm, she did pop back later and ask if everything was okay I said that the potatoes were burnt and she apologised and then removed the plates. I was disappointed cause I recommended going there, I have heard good reviews from my friends, but they didn’t have the roast. Perhaps we were just unlucky.

Our party of five met a friend here for dinner recently on a Wednesday early evening. The pub was not crowded. We had a variety of dishes and all were good. I had the bangers and mash in Yorkshire pudding. It was massive--definitely an entree to share. Bangers were flavorful. We had a pleasant time.

Booked a room. They got the booking wrong and were very reluctant to correct it. Don't bother staying here. Probably ok as a pub and somewhere to eat.

Had a delicious Sunday lunch last weekend! The plate was brimming full of yumminess and at £9.50, you wouldn’t cook at home! Was divine and plentiful!

Whilst down in Penzance for the day I gave Waves a try for some lunch. Good first impressions, very clean and nice feeling. Given the menus, drinks, specials and the main menu. I decided on two pots of tea, ham egg and chips and scampi and chips. Got a large pot of tea for two, even though it didn't say that on the menu. No problems though. Ham egg and chips looked great and tasted great. The scampi and chips were nice plenty of scampi but lacking in fries. Personally I would have preferred the chunky chips with the scampi. I did feel the scampi was slightly overpriced to be honest at I believe £15.95. The total cost for the above was £36.90 ! It seemed expensive for what we had to be honest. Also we asked for some homemade coffee and walnut cake to take away. I was gobsmaked when they asked for another £5.95 for that ! I guess you learn by experience. Overall it was nice but not amazing. Friendly staff, and very clean. But probably wouldn't return purely based on the prices. Give it a go see if I'm right 👍

I don’t understand some of the previous reviews - the haddock was beautifully cooked with a very thin and crispy batter, the chips were soft inside and crispy outside and the tea was obviously made by someone who actually drinks tea! Great lunch spot.

Great family & pet classic pub! After a day in St Ives and an afternoon at Lands End we needed a hearty dinner for 2 adults and 4 healthy appetite teens. The pub had a few regulars in, and easily accommodated us and our Border Collie. Within 5 minutes of being seated, a drinks order was taken, and upon quick receipt of our drinks our food order was taken. 1 beef lasagna, 1 Scampi, 1 Curry of the day, 1 children’s fish & chips, 2 8oz burgers and side orders of onion rings and sweet potato fries. The food was cooked fresh, served within good time and hot! The Burgers, fish, scampi and sides were very much enjoyed. The curry was mostly eaten, just a little bit spicier than expected and the lasagna was a bit too dry for our youngest palate. The bar staff and waiting staff were really friendly, and checked on us enough to show care and not impose.

Just watched four in a bed, omg who does the cleaner think she is? Awful attitude! Both ladies didn’t come across very nice, quite spiteful in fact. I wouldn’t give them a penny tbh
