I have been visiting the Coffee Tavern for many years and it never fails to please. Great menu, super food whether it’s lunch or dropped scones. Great to sit outside in the summer months and cosy up by the log burner in the winter. Perfect after a good local walk.

This is a unique cafe with a very relaxed vibe. The food is delicious, especially the soup and freshly prepared and there is a cosy stove when the weather is colder. Gorgeous setting in the Pott Shrigley countryside.

We’ve been enjoying the Coffee Tavern for many years, both for mains and afternoon teas. Andrew is a gifted chef and everything that he serves is excellent and great value for money. The building itself is very special, enhanced on cooler days with a welcoming log fire. If you haven’t yet visited you’re in for a treat.

We were staying locally at Shrigley Hall but wanted to support a local business rather than paying for a hotel lunch. We ventured here to a quirky little place with so much choice. The waitress was run off her feet on an unexpectedly busy day but she was trying her best. This is clearly a popular place with locals/ regulars. Mains such as salmon in a white wine sauce were around £13 but snacks such as toasties are £5ish. We had crumpets, cheese on toast, two mochas, a slice of lemon and a slice of chocolate cake - cakes were delicious! All came to £19.30.

Came across this place during a walk, didn’t know it existed! Only had a coffee and a hot chocolate, but made to feel welcome. Accidentally came across this pleasant cafe on our way back from Lyme Park. Using an old converted community hall it was a surprising find in the late afternoon and that it remained open until 6pm. Well set out for distancing and although we only had a drink we saw several others having chicken or beef meals which looked very tasty. Not the cheapest place to eat but a good choice for all tastes.

Visited here one morning for brunch/lunch and it is a great little place.A 20 minute car journey from South Manchester or if you are walking or cycling around Pott Shrigley, Macclesfield etc., it is worth paying a visit. There is a decent sized car park. There is plenty of choice on the menu and the specials boards will add to your options. I went for cheese on toast, something you don’t see on enough menus these days, my daughter went for a baked potato with cheese and bacon. There were other more filling options for mains and also oatcakes and homemade soup. There is a good range of drinks available and also cakes and puddings if you have a sweet tooth. My daughter had a flapjack which was really good. My partner went for rhubarb crumble and custard which was also excellent. The lady who served us was very friendly and the food and drinks came quickly. The building itself is a little quirky but don’t let that put you off.

What is with the piles of ‘crafts’ that look like they have been leftover from church’s jumble sale sometime in the 80s. Takes up so much room that could be used for diners. And on a spring Saturday they could have filled extra tables. The food is perfect cafe fare. We had oatcake stuffed with smoked bacon and cheese and mushrooms on toast. Both excellent and to be fair everything that came out of the kitchen looked great and there were no unhappy diners. Service friendly. Good coffee too.Yes do local crafts but make sure they are quality.

Walking The North Cheshire Way we were instructed to pass this place. It is on a country lane in the middle of nowhere. From the outside it looks like a large garden shed made of green corrugated iron. But inside was cosy warm and welcoming. A wood burner adddd to the atmosphere. There were locally made crafts for sale in the entrance porch. We had Staffordshire oatcakes which I had never heard of. They turned out to be crispy oaty type pancakes with a good quality of filling. Quite tasty. I was surprised by how many customers were in the premises. This place ticks a lot of boxes for various clientele but was an ideal lunch stop for our winter walk. If I lived closer I would certainly return.

Taken here as a treat by friends who had visited many times before. We were not disappointed. An extensive and varied menu, including gluten free options. Four of us ordered different meals. They all arrived at the same time, after a reasonable wait! Food was lovely, hot and tasty. The atmosphere was relaxed and the wood burner was welcome on a chilly April afternoon. The only issue we had was waiting nearly 25 minutes to pay the bill with one person ahead of us trying to pay. Would return for cake or a cream tea as it looked delicious and was obviously a popular choice.

If you are asking for deluxe service and perhaps the finest cuisine, then you should not choose the Coffee Tavern. Here is an eating place for a morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea while out for a walk or in transit. You will find a venue which is rich in atmosphere, with its log stove and the conversation of frequent local callers. The helpings were adequate to large and food to be served hot was hot. A positive experience - I felt it was a privilege to have lunch in a venue such as this in the 21st century - perhaps a throwback from the 1930's.

I am genuinely struggling to find something nice to say about the service and food at this place as the service was non existing and the food was, lets put it frank: not what we ordered, moldy and anything but nice! When I arrived at this place which, from the outside looks really nice: one of those typical flat-pack houses made with large sheets of metal it made me think back to one of my favorite 'simple coffee joints' in the Megalong Valley in Australia but, boy how was I disappointed; The lady who 'acts' as a waitress/coffee-maker (it would be an offense to the coffee trade call her a barista) was one of the rudest people i have ever met, never did she look any of us in the eyes, kept staring down, shaking her head (I am aware this may have something to due with psychological disorders she may have however on the terms on which we visited the place it is irrelevant) I ordered a savoury muffin only to be told that they only had one left (I was only after one) and that I could not have it (did not understand a word the waitress said) so I ordered a bacon and cheese toastie which was basically two slices of non-toated bread with cheese in it (yep, not toasted and no bacon)At this point I had almost give up but when our drinks order arrived I wanted to stab myself: the 'Hot Chocolate Melt' which was supposed to contain a whooping 40grams of pure 43% Marimba single origin chocolate was the weakest hot chocolate I had ever had and sadly my back was to the 'waitress' was made but my wife swore that only a tiny tea spoon was put in my cup! a major disappointment to say the least! The coffee needs a review of its own; firstly, there is nothing called an eXpresso! and secondly whatever it was I was served; it definitely was't an Americano as it had more milk in it than a mature cow! We left with a ridiculously high bill but unable to communicate with the robot who acted as waitress and truth to be told: whoever the owner is of this place needs so sort out their act! Both Basil Faulty, Mr Bean and the late Gordon Kaye would shake their heads in disbelief that a place like this still exists! Sadly, its got so much potential but let down by the worst service this world has to offer and food that any 3 year old can cook better !

One person needed to get back for the school run, so we couldn't stop, but nipped in to ask if we could get our water refilled as it was a hot day, and the lady serving was very obliging. Once back at our cars, we thought that coffee and cake was a good idea, so came back here. One person had to send her cake back as it was the wrong one, but the correct piece came out quickly, the rest of the order wasn't quite so fast. Everything was plonked down on the edge of the table, we then had to distribute it ourselves, not the service you'd normally expect. Apart from this, it was a lovely spot to stumble on, and if I'm back in the area, I'll stop in again.

OK, so walking into this place is like stepping into a horror movie. We walked in and it was about 50% full but there was nobody talking to each other - all you could hear is cutlery against ceramic. I'd just been to Lyme Park and was particularly parched... thus practically drinking them out of their bottled water - all five bottles. My date is quite fond of herbal teas (which I was surprised at their selection of).... we told the waitress we wanted to sit outside and were asked to wait there and pay before we carried our drinks outside - you have to admire the trust and service. On the upside, the views were fantastic and it gave us a lot to talk about as we sat outside crying with laughter at the whole experience... for that alone, it gets 3 stars!

Called in to this unique restaurant which sits on the North Cheshire Way. Had the hotpot, which was served with idyllic pickled onion, beetroot and red cabbage. There is a small but varied selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and, similarly, a short but varied menu of mains, sweets, cakes etc.. Plenty to suit everyone's taste. As noted the service, despite the relatively few customers, was slow but that didn't matter. My only complaint is the complete lack of hot water in the toilets. I find this unacceptable, particularly in a country area catering for large numbers of walkers and cyclists.

Although I have never had a meal here, I and my colleagues have stopped here many times for coffee and cakes, particularly their scones. Service can occasionally be slow but sat in front of the wood burning stove in the winter or sitting outside in the sun in the summer can be quite pleasant especially if you have had a hard cycle ride in the surrounding hills (brickworks, Blaze Hill, Windgatherer etc) or a tramp over the moors to Bowstones. A word of warning however there has been an instance of bike thieving.

Dropped in here yesterday whilst cycling with a friend, and had the best drop scones I have ever tasted! They were freshly cooked and promptly served with a smile, and we enjoyed them in the garden looking out over the Cheshire Peaks.I have visited the cafe before in the winter when a large wood burning stove warms the interior. Service can be on the slow side but there are all sorts of things to look at whilst one waits; antiques and crafts upstairs, cards and maps downstairs. It can be hard to get a table at lunchtime so they clearly have a loyal clientele.

After we stumbled across this quirky little place, we had high hopes, as it’s unique and certainly has its own particular charm. However, our high expectations disappeared as soon as we dealt with the staff. The odd women who seems to run the café, appears to have some sever social disorder. We managed to enter the building, sit down, make a drink and food order, be served and awkwardly stand next to her for 10 minutes at the till attempting to attract her attention and pay, all without her looking me in the face or speaking to me. She is incapable of providing good customer service, potentially through no fault of her own. We did briefly deal with a waitress but only when she dismissed my attempt to make an order and later when she dismissed my attempt to pay, each time directing me to deal with the peculiar lady who seemed determined to ignore our existence. The food is okay for the most part, if a little overpriced when the quality is considered. My sandwich wasn’t bad, my girlfriend’s Jam Roly Poly and Custard and her coffee were both nice but my milkshake was laughably terrible, as it was just milk with a pink sugar and food colouring solution squirted into it.It’s a shame that the staff make no effort to provide good customer service or good quality food, as the place itself is charming and under different management could be a really lovely café. However, due to the shockingly poor and rude service, lacklustre food and poor value, this café only avoids being completely forgettable due to the strange atmosphere cultivated by the peculiar women in charge. We remained polite throughout our visit and chose not to complain, more out of bemusement than any desire not to offend. We left dissatisfied and a bit confused. Needless to say, we didn’t leave a tip and won’t be returning.

Teas, cakes and smiles all served by the lovely characterful lady of the tavern. There is a super line from the film A Good Year that I shall pinch that may help those not wanting this type of venue....Cheap burgers in The 'Sheep Centre' fish and chips Blackpool....

Visited on a cold day and were expecting the cafe to be nice and warm. Unfortunately it wasn't. The service was horrendous with a rude waitress who looked like she didn't want to be there. It was that bad it was funny... it was like a sitcom sketch! The food is plain and quite expensive. The only positives were the building is rustic with character and the coffee was quite good.

This cafe looks quaint from the outside and though it could have charm on the inside its just cluttered, cramped and dusty. The waitress totally ignored us when we walked in, we sat down (leaving our coats on as it was cold as well as dark) and sat down, the chairs are not comfortable and our table was dirty with old drinks and food smeared on it.We had a browse of the menu, it seems pretty traditional probably to suit the older clientele (I'm 35 and was the youngest person in there by a good 30 years!) but what struck me was the prices, it's cheaper in John Lewis! I wouldn't have minded if the food was good but honestly it was really average, in fact the coffee was actually disgusting and the tea tasted wet as we say in Yorkshire - weak, cheap tea bags.Whilst it's somewhere to stop on a walk, I can't say I'd ever visit again as the prices are silly and the waitress is so rude it's almost comical. I'm shocked she didn't trip up over her face as she mooched around clattering pots about.Apparently this place has 5/5 food hygiene, I think they need to revisit as it wasn't clean.

I stopped off here on a whim whilst out with my 5 year old and 7 month old children. Parking was ok but there is a space right I front of the door which made access difficult. There was a ramp up to the main entrance so u thought it must be family friendly - how wrong was I! On entering the lights were off and I had to peer in to see if it was open. It was, but difficult to enter as there was a massive Christmas tree blocking the door and we had to duck under the branches! Inside it is cramped, gloomy and cherOn entering with my children, who are very well behaved and quiet and today was no exception, there was an audible sigh and annoyed look from the little grumpy waitress, presumably as I'd brought a (small) pushchair in. Other than that there was no awknowledgement. I asked the waitress if I could leave the pushchair anywhere and hold my baby but I was told no. A male customer offered his table as he was leaving so I sat down much to the annoyance of the waitress. On looking at the menu it was all overpriced, 'traditional' food - mackerel and so on. The only thing my daughter would have eaten was the baked potato - at £8.50! From what I could see the portion sizes were small and the coffee was instant, surprising really for a coffee shop. I asked was there anywhere to change my baby and was told to go outside and do it on the back seat of my car.... so I went outside, got the kids in the car and escaped! Never have I been treated so rudely in such a short space of time. As we were driving away my daughter said 'I'm glad we are leaving the scary cafe Mummy!' So was I!!

Been wanting to go to this cafe for a while due to it's construction as one of the original flat pack houses built in 1883 but unfortunately we were very disappointed,, when we went in we weren't greeted and the waitress walked straight past us. We sat down and ordered some drinks, no conversation with the waitress and the drinks were eventually plonked on the table - coffee undrinkable even to a coffee lover. We then ordered food and waited for a further 30 minutes for it to arrive even though there were only around 8 other people in there and we could see that they had already been served. We received 2 bacon and cheese toasties and chips which again were thrown onto our table without a word. We then asked 'can we...' we were interrupted by a grinchy voice saying 'i'm getting you your sauces'. Which were then removed from a table which had yet to be cleaned and given to us, the mayonnaise had obviously been used as there were several chip sized scoops out of the middle. We were in complete disbelief as she then went to clear the table where our recycled sauces had come from. We then looked at our £5 'toasties', these were both consisting of 2 slices of un-smoked thin cut bacon between 2 pieces of warbies and NO CHEESE. We were both appalled by the service and standard of food so we went to tell the waitress that we had no cheese on our toasties and to ask if we could have some fresh sauces. She admitted that she had taken the sauces from another table and reluctantly agreed to get us some fresh ones, when asked about the food she said 'it will take us a while to make you something new'. At no point did she apologise for the poor quality of food or service and we were offered no discount for the inconvenience. In the end we didn't eat the food and told her that we were going to be leaving and left with no payment. Overall absolutely appalled and will not be returning.

The thing about the Coffee Tavern is that it's basically a tea/coffee place that does lovely cakes (the flapjacks are amazing), good sarnies and that kind of thing. And the meals are fine generally. But the family that run it are country people, not restauranteurs and communication and service isn't what you might expect from a restaurant in town. So if you expect tip-top service and gourmet food, don't go. If you want a snack or a brew and cakes on your walk it's fine. Definitely quirky and variable. Mainly older people I suppose. But we really enjoy going there.

We have passed this interesting looking cafe many times and decided to try it for breakfast on a Saturday morning on our way back from a parkrun at Lyme Park. The inside is interesting also with a vaulted ceiling, nice beams and local crafts advertised for sale in mezzanine areas above the cafe. However, it was empty on arrival and we didn't receive a warm welcome, it was some time before the waitress came over to us. The waitress wasn't friendly, just took our order without any chat. When the drinks and cutlery were brought over, they were just dumped on the side of the table without comment rather than putting them in front of our place settings. We had quite a wait for our breakfast (scrambled eggs with salmon on toast and a mushroom and cheese omlette) and during our wait another customer came in, ordered and received a full english breakfast. We must have been waiting half an hour, during which time we investigated the 'local crafts' which turned out to be mostly a jumble sale, mainly second hand books and ornaments. We heard the ping of a microwave from the kitchen which had us worried. When the food eventually arrived, the waitress again didn't engage us, not even eye contact or a smile, and she struggled so much putting the plates down between the menus and other items on the table that I wondered if the food would end up on the floor. The scrambled eggs and salmon were okay, with plenty of smoked salmon, however the scrambled eggs were definitely microwaved which is ok if you're making them yourself but I'd expect nice buttery eggs from a cafe. The omlette, however was NOT okay. My boyfriend described it as a shammy leather, and to be honest that was a kind description. I've no idea how you dry out eggs but this omlette was arid. Also there was no cheese on it, not that this would have made it more edible. We told the waitress we wouldn't be paying for the omlette as it was awful, she didn't apologise, or offer us an alternative, just said "I'll tell chef". After a discussion in the kitchen, the waitress returned and theatrically scratched the omlette off our receipt. Again we received no apology, conversation or eye contact. We left feeling like we had had the most bizarre experience. My boyfriend compared the service to Julie Walter's character from the 'Two Soups' sketch, which we watched when we got home, and we had a good laugh about the total lack of customer service and appalling food.

The Original Coffee Tavern is a pretty little cafe situated next to the Middlewood Way cycle path in Higher Poynton. Lovely garden to sit in at the back of the cafe as well as seating on the front and inside. We had ham, pickle and cheese sandwiches which were made with beautiful home made brown bread cut thickly and served with salad and coleslaw. A real plateful, followed by mugs of tea and a cake. Just the thing after a long bike ride. The cafe also serves afternoon teas and snacks and sells ice creams and chocolates and all those sweets you remember from childhood, displayed in glass jars on several shelves. A real old fashioned cafe with amazingly good value food and a friendly welcome - oh and lovely hanging baskets too.

I have been coming here occasionally, mainly because it is on the North Cheshire Way, and not too far from the Gritstone Trail. An interesting building, with the history posted on the wall. They also have walking maps for a large area. It is not the place to come to if you want a meal in a rush, but I like a tearoom with friendly service and a relaxing stay there. Also the opening times are quite long, I think only closed on one day a week (please check).

Generally have a lovely meal and expect slow service and a bit of quirkiness. Today was like something out of Fawlty Towers!!! We arrived and selected our 'usual' seat and were told in no uncertain terms that "22 people are coming for afternoon tea" and were told not to sit down. We weren't advised whether we needed to leave and found a little table where we were out of the way. Other customers arrived and were told "22 people ..... etc" and they obviously picked up on not being welcome. The people at the table next to us commented that they couldn't believe how rude the service was!! Our drinks and food was banged down on the table and we felt really uncomfortable. If you are going to cater for a party of 22 people and are pushed to the limit here's a simple solution. Put a sign on the door telling the rest of your customers that you have a private party booked and the cafe will be closed for the afternoon to enable you to deal with so many customers instead of making them uncomfortable for having the audacity to walk into a cafe and expect to be served. Fortunately we saw the funny side of things but as we had travelled quite a distance to get there and then been made so unwelcome we won't be back anytime soon.

Out cycling in the Peaks one Sunday morning, close to collapsing with starvation, we came across this quirky tavern. Like an old wooden chapel that time had forgotten, the Coffee Tavern served up lashings of tea, flapjacks and cake. Wood buring stove, plenty of space, friendly welcome -- couldn't be better.

There are some things in life that should not change and old fashioned values is one. The Coffee Tavern is a gem, providing a quiet haven with home cooked food and an escape from the hum drum of the world at large. One can drink a wonderful "cuppa" and enjoy a truly great English breakfast.

We keep coming back. This café provides good quality basic food and drink in an interesting setting - an old village reading room also selling a variety of knick knacks. The filled oatcakes are good. Staff are helpful. It situated just down the road from a back entrance to Lyme Park so can easily be incorporated into a country walk,

sadly I will not be making a stop over again since my bill for a basic lunch for myself and child came to £15.70 (jacket potato, cup of tea, beans on toast, milkshake, all reasonable priced but the child's ice cream was a staggering £3.70). The tea was WEAK; cheap tea bag. They knew it was for a child so to not use their discretion and to give her an adult portion that she could not eat is a waste of food and money. A child's menu would be useful. We were with other adults all paying for meals and more.

We have been going here every now and then for many years and it never changes. Yes as others have said, you do have to wait a bit for your food but the service is always friendly-we have never been and not been acknowledged or had a smile and they always say goodbye. Perhaps some people get the service they deserve?. I had the enormous hot beef muffin, probably the best hot beef sandwich in the world ( and I have eaten a few) full to bursting with beef and fried onions. I greedily ordered a portion of chips but didn't really need them so left some. My husband had the sausage, egg and chips- 4 thin sausages which he says are a lovely flavour. He managed to find room for gooseberry crumble and custard which was a huge portion and when I had a taste, although I am not a gooseberry fan it was delicious.Well worth a visit if you are out in this area and staying open until 6.00pm is a bonus- so many places say they do teas then shut by 4.00 pm.

I don't agree with previous reviewers about the service - our service was fine, my complaint is that the sausages had been cooked until they were black. I did wonder if they had been precooked and then warmed up. The same tasteless bought-in chips that you get in many places, and an undercooked fried egg! Not a happy experience. However, my companion thoroughly enjoyed her garlic mushrooms, and my coffee cake was lovely.

As others have said, excellent food and drink but dozy service. The two young lads who were waiting on during our visit would only take an order if you cornered them and even then it took an eternity for a pot of tea to appear. A real pity as it's a gem of a place in every other respect and would have gained maximum points otherwise.

Going here is like going back in time. The food is lovely - home-made, good stuff; big fat puddings with lashings of custard, pots of tea that leak a bit when you pour. Service is slow. But that's somehow its charm, as if the last 30 years of cost-efficiency-savings and shiny shiny interactive menus and 'can i get' haven't happened. This is a lovely place to go when you're not in a rush. It makes me feel like the Famous Five could pop in the door at any moment. One small thing - the restraint in the high chair is broken so a smaller or more wriggly child could fall out of it!

Came across this surprising jewel whilst hiking a loop from The Wych Wood via Adlington Pool. Quiet, with friendly service and a great range of drinks and food. We only had some cake (splendid), flapjacks (massive) and drinks (hot chocolate melts...mmmm) but it was lovely. Kids were welcome and had a bit of a run around while we tried to figure out what the building had been.

Food has got expensive, on the website states paninis £7.75, when the actual price in the cafe is over £10. We had 2 paninis and a pot of tea, the bill came to over £27. We use the cafe on a regular basis, but will be giving it a miss from now.

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!
