The Cod Squad in Portsmouth

When we moved here 8 months ago we tried all the chip shops, this was the best. And have frequented it every Friday since. But the last 4 visits have been disappointing, the chips are somehow soggy but not properly cooked and stale?! The portions have shrunk and the sausage tastes of nothing. What's happened??

Fantastic chip shop, prices are brilliant, chips are a great size, flavour is spot on. Consistency of food results is the only issue, yet we do still choose here over other chip shops, some days 10/10, others can be a 5. Cod cakes have, on multiple occasions been burned on the bottom meaning cod inside was dry and not fluffy. Battered fish can be heavily greasy and oily, which overtakes the flavour entirely. End up removing the batter just to eat the cod. Battered sausage can be over-done.

2 years ago I gave it 4 stars its gone so far down hill if I could have given it zero I would long wait even though I was the only person in shop looks like take away has priority now a days just eat ect they have taken customers for granted and become lazy keep leaning on the fridge looking at your phone.

Really good consistent and fresh fish and chips, without waiting too long apart from busiest times. Only a few seats to wait so normally standing.

We ordered a chicken burger cod and large chips. they tasted amazing and the large chips feed three of us

Best Fish and Chips in Portsmouth.

What a fantastic place! Incredibly generous portion sizes for the price, I didn't think places did this any more! The chips were so good we are considering going back the very next day.

Ordered large cod and was not disappointed - it was huge!! Lovely crispy batter, not at all greasy. Fresh flaky fish. Chips were chunky and crispy. Would def order from here again!

Hot & tasty, cooked fresh - big portions!

I have used this establishment on numerous occasions, and sadly, I have to report that last Thursdays sausage and chips were not up to the mark, that I am usually served. The chips in particular were obviously reheats and tasted awful.

Food arrived cold with multiple items missing. Called the shop to resolve but was told they were definitely put in the bag (even though it arrived sealed and they weren’t in the bag) and I could only get replacements if I walked to the shop to get them. The guy on the phone couldn’t care less and made no attempt to fix the mistake at all. Terrible customer service and food not great either considering the prices.

I agree with below limited items had no curry sauce so asked for gravy no gravy either had pea fritter was dropped on floor on accident even tho was in bag would expect new one server was polite and plenty of chips wouldn't go back tho

Customer service needs to be improved. Could have been friendlier service burger option is limited..onion not available for burger options. Sad.

Sadly poor quality, plenty of food but thr fish was exceptionally oily the chips were re-cooked and actually not nice to try and eat ,in the end gave up,the speed at which we were served was good but would willingly wait 5 mins more to experience lighter tasting fish and chips especially if cooked fresh

On thursday we chose this Fish n Chip shop as our usual one was temporary closed. I must say for first time we were very Impressed with the quality. We ordered Cod and Chips. The cod was gorgous succulent mouth watering and the batteer was perfect not greasy and not soggy delicious in fact. Chips were plenty and we not hard nice size and most important freshly fried and not double cooked like some places. Nice service too. Clean shop. Shall return for more soon. Keep up the good quality service ...👍

Honestly some of the worst fish and chips I've ever had. Chips weren't cooked through, way way too much salt and that's coming from someone who likes a lot of salt, it literally made me gag. The curry sauce tasted of nothing as well, potentially shop bought? £3 for a tiny pot of bland curry sauce was a real kicker. The fish cake literally tasted of nothing, it was just grey mush. The battered sausage was the only redeeming feature of the whole meal. Wish I'd just gotten an actual curry instead, waste of £15. Won't be back

Awful place Chips weren’t cooked properly, sausage was tasteless and the fish was burnt save your money and go elsewhere.

Ordered large cod and cheesy chips through Uber eats asked for salt and vinegar but it was tasteless not enough quantity of chips and very oily food

Regular chips....£3.70....your having a laugh !!! I've been robbed, won't be back , yor as bad as the rest of the greedy business, no excuse.

As a family we have used this outstanding fish and chip shop for many years while visiting the seafront at Southsea. Very friendly staff and the quality of th food is always spot on. There is a need to jostle for a parking space nearby as this is a busy high street.

Consistantly good and deservedly busy, on unknown reasons I have not been in here for about 12 months and was chuffed to find they are as good as ever, also discovered their amazing curry sauce

In the past, we have enjoyed beautifully cooked fish and chips, delivered by Just Eat....until today. Has there been a change of owner? Or cook? I have never ever had such dreadful fush and chips. Ever. Over cooked fish in batter. Soggy over cooked chips which were quite possibly yesterday's left over batch. This is the last time Cod Squad have my custom.

Genuinely the best cod I've ever had at such a reasonable price. I've spent twice as much for fish that wasn't half as meaty and flavourful. Giant chip portions, large is enough for three people!

Couldn't ask for any more, great food at fair price.

We always order from them. Today guy has served bloke before us telling him that they are still cooking. Then with no explanation he has refused to cook fish. It was before 9pm. Change your staff and attitude.

The fish and chips were both well fried, but absolutely free of taste, although I ordered salt and vinegar. It was also swimming in oil. The only plus is the big portion.

Lunchtime takeaway. Overdone twice cooked chips and tasteless sausage in batter. Worst chips I've ever had. Was ok the last time I went so maybe an off day?

Excellent fish and chips, service not so good as the take away deliveries take up a lot of time. Parking is also a problem.

Just popped in to get some chips and were bluntly told they weren't taking anymore orders and they'd not been open long. Rude. Won't be back, poor poor service and attitude.

This is a fish and chip shop so questions are irrelevant. We bought chips and curry sauce for lunch last Saturday both were not fresh and cold. The service was not great either. Not good

Gert chips! Their portion sizes are fantastic and fish is always cooked to order.

Great friendly and quick service, excellent freshly cooked fish such as Haddock, only need one portion of chips to share as plenty to go around. After Highland Fling shut....Cod Squad has my custom. Recommended.

Decent portion of chips, regular size easily enough for 3 adults with fish. Need to work on temperature of sides, curry sauce and mushy peas cold. Good to see proper traditional mushy peas being served. Young lad on counter pleasant enough. Good value for money

Food is great service it fast but it can get busy

Reminds me of how chippies were when ai was a kid, I don’t mean getting your food in a newspaper, but massive portions, loads of choice, the smell is old school mouth watering and tastes great. Cracking chippy. My only first world problem with it there is no gravy!

I loved this place when it opened but not so happy with it now. Chips were not crisp and the fish did not seem as fresh as it could be.

They were super busy but staff were great and sorted our food quickly

not as good fish very greasy and prices gone up to high as we can get it down the road cheaper ,, sad this was one of te good ones staff love to go on time not even a second later so you can order if at 5 to 2 not happy with the staff

Really good food, proper nice fish n chunky chips with decent curry sauce! Reasonably priced n quickly served, even with it being a Friday night... Recommended if you're in Pompey.

I ordered large chips and 2 pukka pies freezing 🥶 cold ruined our lunch to top it off they won't pick up the phone so I will not be getting anything from again also I've been ringing the phone for over an hour so resolve the situation and no answer I'll be popping up there great Friday thanks cod squad 🙂

My 2nd online purchase from this fish shop very disappointing ordered fish cake and chips,what I got was fish cake and chip scraps,no chips...ironically when I go in the shop to order there's no problem we get proper chips not a full portion of scrap ends ..no more uber delivery from here for me.👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

Fish and chips, The cooking oil was used and hadn't not been changed for a while,thats my experience, after working in the kitchen s of IBM,The chips a funny taste and just didn't look right theY could of been cooked but in fresher oil , I will pop back to see if it was a one off

Worst meal here for a long time. Chips too greasy/oily. Fish was overcooked and quite dry. Looks like new staff being used. Hopefully they will improve. Usually its much better than this. May be a one off.

The wait was like 40 minutes. When I got back, they had given a small sausage instead of a big one. They had also forgot the curry sauce. I was recommended this place but I will not recommend

Decent Fish n Chip shop never had reason to complain and always enjoyed my food from here.The chips r very nice and always cooked to perfection. The jumbo battered sausage is very tasty and a must for me on every order.Fish is pretty decent but can be a pretty greasy and the fish cakes are ok.Curry sauce is nice and full of flavour.Portion size is massive a regular chips would easily do two people.Definitely worth a visit to the Cod squad

Usually very good but this time the chips were not very crisp and I wondered if they needed to be cooked a little longer? Fish was excellent. I collected them myself so it wasn't a delivery problem.

Cod was either over cooked or frozen as it was hard , dry and tasteless . Chips were also dry and over cooked . Won’t be going back

We had a Takeaway,delivered by Just Eat,and were very disappointed.The batter on the fish was very soggy and had stuck to the paper.The fish was cold,but the chips were piping hot.

Absolutely the best fish and chips we had for a very long time. Large cod is whale sized! The fish was perfectly cooked with crispy batter, and the chips were also lovely. The young guy who served us was very polite and pleasant. We will definitely return when we visit Southsea again.

Not good at all. Cod pretty tasteless with thick greasy batter. Certainly wasn’t cooked too order. Chips appeared to having been sitting for some time too and again tasteless and rubbery

Went here with absolutely no knowledge of good nearby fish and chip shops so I am glad I chose well. Grabbed some food from here and drove down to the coast to enjoy it with a view of the sea. Love that it came in a little bag too, so much easier to eat from the many layers of paper you normally get.

I called into the shop at 8.45 pm for fish and chips on a Saturday night, my first visit. Staff looked at clock and said they would not be cooking any more fish. I presumed they were closing at 9pm. Web site actually says 10pm but that times could vary. Obviously the customer is not important!

Visiting Portsmouth and Southsea and found The Cod Squad on a review site. Large cod, chips, cooked fresh whilst I waited. Took them to the promenade. Very nice crispy batter and tasty chips, great portion of white fresh fish. Highly recommended.

Fish taste old and chips was a bit hard. Ended up feeding to the seagulls at southsea wast of £16
