Fantastic fish and chips cooked very well especially the cod roe and fish cakes excellent chips as well and curry sauce very tasty definitely come back next time we are in Portsmouth

You can't beat good fish and chips and this was great fish and chips. Good service and prices. Really recommended.

Lovely food and excellent service

We have just returned from a 3 night break in Portsmouth and out of our 3 evening meals, the fish & chips we had at the Britannia was the clear winner. The food was freshly cooked and tasty, just what we needed after a day spent sightseeing & shopping.

We grabbed some fish and chips and must say that it was one of the worst I have had, the chips were dry and hard (probably been sitting for a while) fish was freshly cooked ( could have done with a lot more frying) fishcake was OK but a bit of a wierd taste. All in all was very disappointed. We have used this chip shop before and it was quite good but last night was not pleasant

As previously mentioned we are Fish & Chips fans. The smell of a fryer cooking freshly cut potatos and hand battered cod is heaven! That said, we were a little confused that the previous two chippies we'd tried here in the UK were underwhelmed. Brittania Fish and Chips was the place we'd been looking for. The front half of the shop was devoted to takeaways, with some seating at the back. As we were fatigued after a day of exploring the historic Portsmouth dockyard we opted for a sit down meal. One of the keys to finding a good chippy is how long it takes for the food to show up on the table. One of the places we'd visited in London had the meal out to us in a few minutes. Not a good sign. Underwhelmed is being nice. We watched as the cook hand dipped the cod in the batter and placed it into the fryer. After an appropriate amount of frying our meal arrived. A generous serving of perfectly prepared cod with crispy chips! We ordered a side of mushy peas to complete the experience. To say we were happily sated after the meal would be an understatement! Unlike the places we tried in London, the food at Brittania was reasonably priced. Thank you, Brittania for restoring our faith in fish & Chips!

This is tonight's chips. Managed the small sausage. Some of the Chips like they had been previously cooked some time ago and then reheated tonight. Rock hard and horrid.If you want them they are in the bin at Portsmouth Harbour station....

Unfortunately I am unable to add the photos I took of the food I brought due to a photo error. However , 'The Review': A small fish & chips shop located in front of the Historical dockyard. I enter the shop for the first time and was immediately greeted which made the entrance more welcoming. The food shop sells the following; Burger, chips, fish (hake, COD etc), pies, Fish cakes, fish roe cakes and sausages. The fish and chips shop is either a takeaway or an eat in. However on this occasion I asked for a takeaway as I went just outside the shop across the road to sit of one of the beaches under the tree overlooking Gosport and the HMS Victory. I ordered the following: - Large Fish (COD) with Tatar Sauce - Large Chips with Vinegar and Salt - Jumbo battered sausage - Fish Cake - Curry Sauce & Mushy Pies As soon as I ordered the staff immediately started cooked the food. All the food I ordered was cooked fresh on the spot excluding the Fish Cake & the Curry sauce. The order took around 10 - 15 mins due to it being cooked fresh. As for the price for a shop located right in front of the dockyard, next to one of the cities shopping centre (Gunwarf Quays) and the Bus Deport is worth the price (out of 10 being expensive, price = 6.5). When the food was ready it was given in a traditional paper wrapping however was placed within a company labelled paper box. When I opened the food it was streaming hot so do ensure you give it a minute before driving in. - The Large COD fish was cooked perfectly, tasted fresh, the batter was not to much or overpowering and it had a beautiful crunch to it. The fish goes really well with the tatar sauce. (9/10) - The chips potion was incredibly huge however tasted alright as some were mush however some were crunchy n perfect. (6.5/10) - Jumbo battered sausage was delicious and tasted amazing. (7/10) - Fish Cake was the highlight honestly it was crunchy, soft and the best tasting fish cake I have ever had. (9/10) Overall: - Food: (8/10) - Service (10/10) - Time taken for order (9/10) - Location (10/10) - Price (8/10)

Fantastic fish and chips all cooked fresh to order, don’t forget the curry sauce it’s delicious 🤤 You can eat in or takeaway, and the staff are amazing, lovely lad helping and elderly man on crutches out of the shop so he didn’t drop his chips…. Nice to see 😉

Ordered a portion of cod and chips, very poor quality, the batter on the cod more or less disintegarated, the chips had obviously been refried several times, if i had eaten in I would have refused to have paid. Cash onlky too

Lovely place for lunch, really nice staff very pleasant and friendly and helpful, i sat outside and my meal was brought out to me, i had haddock, chips and mushy pea's it was very tasty at a good price, it was very handy for me as i just had to cross the road to get to the railway station.

What lovely staff! Popped in when my additional needs child was having a meltdown and staff were able to assist by helping serve us so quickly and being so considerate. They had food ready to go in less than a minute and I can't be more thankful ! Really glad we have discovered this little gem and will definitely be coming back in for more than just a quick flying visit next time we are in the area. I had a cheeky chip and they're brilliant, perfect crisp and fluff 🩷🩷

Fantastic location..the staff were very friendly and welcoming..gave excellent service l had cod and chips which to my knowledge was very satisfying especially with the harbour views.. they have a extensive range of meals.. fresh fish fresh home made batter daily...all cooked to order.big thanks 👍

Fish was watery and tasteless, batter had no flavour, chips had more black bits than potato, fish cakes are store bought frozen ones and the curry sauce is like water. And to top it all off if you want to sit on the chairs outside you get charged “restaurant” prices which is an extra £6. Horrible rubbish food even the dog wouldn’t touch it.

Food quality poor, chips were tasteless and the cod was wet. Probably the worst fish and chips we have ever had (and also probably the most expensive)

First time in here and David the owner made us feel very welcome. The food was amazing. Great fish and chips. Had beans onion rings with a lovely cup of tea😀. David came to our table and made conversation and made sure we were happy with everything. Staff couldn't done any better.. 5 stars. If we are in Portsmouth again will definitely go back here. 👍

Had a haddock and chips with gravy which cost £12. For the price I don’t think it was worth it there are better takeaway options. The chips weren’t fresh and not done enough with barely any colour. The haddock was nice but very small. The gravy was the best part

Brittannia provided excellent fish and chips for a large local birthday party. Both the quality of the food and the organisation/service could not have been bettered. Highly recommended

Unhappy staff, 10 min wait for 1 portion of chips and it was not busy. To finish this off, they put vinegar on my chips and I didn't open them till I was too far to walk back.

We have used Britannia Fish Bar many times and have always found the food to be very good. On a number of visits, however, we have been refused eat-in, even - on this occasion - when it was pouring with rain outside. The shop gave every indication of eat-in being available, with lights on in the seating area and no signs to say take-away only. The reason given was (these days over-used) staff shortage. The refusal was polite but nonetheless disappointing for it to happen not for the first time. Their loss was Burger King's gain, unfortunately.

Amazing chips and good sized portions, with a nice view of the bay just across from the shop.

Fish was good but a bit small for the price, chips were a bit so so.

I usually have fish and chips from Brittania and they are the best chips in the area but yesterday they were absolutely horrible. Very dry and I think they were either from the day before and re-fried they were so bad. I hate to leave a bad review because they are usually top notch but yesterday i couldn't eat them and just threw them away. I must also say that it was not the usual staff serving or cooking this time.

Very reasonably priced, very generous food portions and great taste, alongside a friendly service. Will not hesitate to visit again when we find ourselves in Portsmouth.

Ordered 2 x chips and 2 x cod. Got home to find only one lot of chips. Not what you expected to find after paying for it.

Just popped in on our way to the ferry. Everything prepared freshly and yet ready in 4 minutes. Very good fish and chips...we had Haddock.

It's a Fish & Chip shop with waitress service at very reasonable prices, great chips, warm and cosy too with the Warrior right outside. Car parking in multi-stoey only a £1

WOW. These were the best fish and chips we have ever had. FANTASTIC.

Food was good, fast and generous portion but ordering was difficult and uncomfortable because staff were not educated or helpful about allergens despite several signs saying ‘ask at counter for any allergy advice’. Other than that was good.

Went to sit in and eat as we were staying at a nearby hotel, walked in to sit down and was rudely informed it was take away only even though it is advertised as a restaurant and other tables had people at them, staff want to learn some manners, awful experience

Genuinely a great fish and chips. Chips are crispy and clearly cut every day and made to order. Fish is juicy and has a very nice, light, thin and crispy batter. Perfection.

My order was messed up. I confirmed it with the person I ordered from that I have a large cod and tarter sauce takeaway. They gave me small cod, few chips and curry sauce. Called back to store and they said no manager in till next week. They had no care that I was given the wrong order. They only cared that I did not write a complaint. Terrible service. Terrible in dealing with complaint.

I like healthier food (not fried) and I was so glad to discover that this restaurant offers a grilled fish and chips option! This made my day! I was also very impressed with the friendliness of the stuff as well as with how clean the restaurant was. So a great experience all around! DO NOT GO HERE. Absolutely vile treatment by the managers (a man and a woman) towards people with learning disabilities. Made to feel so unwelcome with dirty looks and complete inappropriate behaviour with standing right behind someone at our table. A little compassion and empathy wouldn’t go amiss as well as basic manners like asking if they can take a plate away before grabbing it from the table. I have never experienced such rudeness in a restaurant or similar my whole life. I went with a group of six and it left us feeling so upset and angry. Would never step back here again and if I could give 0 stars I would. If you ever have anyone in your life with additional needs I hope they would never be treated in this way.

Great food, lovely view. But the resturant is a higher price than the takeaway, and you cant sit outside their shop with a takeaway.

Witnessed the situation with disabled people. The care woman was full of hatred. Telling the staff they are little shi.t. Threatening to write in Internet bed reviews, so nobody would come to the shop. Wishing the God would never bless them. How somebody say such things?! She should not be allowed to look after the most vulnerable people! It was very stressful experience. Nobody looked after disable person. He took the food from other customer plate. But even after that, everyone was very polite and helpful!

Hands down one of the best fish and chips we have had! The fish and even the chips were so fresh, the staff is very professional and the restaurant is very clean and well kept. If you’re in Portsmouth, you definitely need to try this place!

I can honestly say I have never experienced such wonderful fish and chips ! We had Cod and Chips and Battered Sausage. Huge portion , we shared large chips. The chips were crisp golden and perfect , the cod was fresh and batter on both light and puffy. Cooked and presented with care by friendly staff. A true reflection of what fish and chips should be.

I come here everyday for my break as a coach driver, the food is excellent, battered sausages are amazing and the fish is so fresh it's flaky and not dry. The chips are amazing. The staff are friendly, welcoming and amazing. It's always clean and have plenty of comfortable seating. If you are visiting Portsmouth then add this place to your visits you won't be disappointed

My wife and I stayed in Portsmouth for 3 nights and came across this Fish and Chips restaurant on the sea front, just opposite the train station. So we ventured in for an evening meal, we wasn't really expecting too much other than the usual bog standard fish and ships. But holy smoke were we pleasantly surprised. This has to be the best fish and chips I think I've literally ever eaten. The portions were very substantial which came at a well worth cost. The Fish and Chips was cooked fresh as expected and was served by the very friendly chef. I was extremely surprised by the freshness and quality of the fish which was moist and flaky and wished I'd asked for the recipe for that light crispy golden batter. I suppose given the fact the restaurant is situated on the sea front you'd expect the fish to be fresh, but this was super fresh and well worth every penny. My wife and I will be paying you a visit again in the very near future when we come back to Portsmouth. I'd also like to say thank you for your friendly service to the lovely young lady who we had a chat with.

We found this place by accident on our way to the ferry port. So glad we did as the fish & chip experience was truly exceptional. The owner said it had taken him 17 years to get it this good and his attention to detail shows in the results - light and crispy batter around the freshly fried fish, tasty chips. It’s so hard to find good fish and chips these days but Britannia is highly recommended.

Best fish and chips in Pompey. An unassuming little place but always with a warm welcome and great food. I Always eat in here rather than get a take away and the fish is always so fresh, perfectly cooked with lovely batter that's not too thick and just right. Delicious! It maybe just needs a little music in the back to improve the atmosphere but otherwise great.

The staff were super friendly, and the fish was very crispy. I would suggest adding a little salt.

Something smelled fishy but was probably the fish

We were visiting Royal Dockyards & needed a reasonably priced lunch & saw this restaurant just outside the docks. The staff were excellent so friendly & helpful, the seating area was very clean & welcoming & the food was excellent, portions were very generous & great value for money as very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend using this restaurant when visiting the docks rather than paying an extortionate fee for second rate fish n chips.

Came here on Coronation Day for a late lunch with my husband. Very well placed near to the entrance of Portsmouth Historic dockyard where we had visited. Absolutely delighted! First of all, beautiful cod, chips, peas and onion rings, all cooked perfectly. Lovely friendly staff and quick service. On top of that it has 5 star food hygiene ratings - well done! Our experience was a real bit of sunshine on a rainy day. Highly recommend this restaurant/takeaway.

Great fish & Chip place with a restaurant at the back , well worth a visit , all cooked fresh to order , near the Gunwharf Quays and the navy dock yard and just over the road from the bus station , the food is very good .

Came in today after not being here for so long. Staff have changed hands. Order three cod and chips and two drinks. £33! Not a good price. The food tasted horrible. This was while our cod was being fried before hand and we had to wait for it to be handed to us. There was nobody inside and I'm not surprised. This has nothing to do with the bad weather. Won't be coming back.

Fish always freshly cooked to order, decent sized portions
