Britannia Fish and Chips in Portsmouth

The staff are friendly, very nice and helpful if you ask for information. The fish and chips are fresh and very tasty.

Unhappy staff, 10 min wait for 1 portion of chips and it was not busy. To finish this off, they put vinegar on my chips and I didn't open them till I was too far to walk back.

Amazing chips and good sized portions, with a nice view of the bay just across from the shop.

Fish was good but a bit small for the price, chips were a bit so so.

I usually have fish and chips from Brittania and they are the best chips in the area but yesterday they were absolutely horrible. Very dry and I think they were either from the day before and re-fried they were so bad. I hate to leave a bad review because they are usually top notch but yesterday i couldn't eat them and just threw them away. I must also say that it was not the usual staff serving or cooking this time.

A bit pricey but worthed every penny

Very reasonably priced, very generous food portions and great taste, alongside a friendly service. Will not hesitate to visit again when we find ourselves in Portsmouth.

Ordered 2 x chips and 2 x cod. Got home to find only one lot of chips. Not what you expected to find after paying for it.

Just popped in on our way to the ferry. Everything prepared freshly and yet ready in 4 minutes. Very good fish and chips...we had Haddock.

It's a Fish & Chip shop with waitress service at very reasonable prices, great chips, warm and cosy too with the Warrior right outside. Car parking in multi-stoey only a £1

WOW. These were the best fish and chips we have ever had. FANTASTIC.

Food was good, fast and generous portion but ordering was difficult and uncomfortable because staff were not educated or helpful about allergens despite several signs saying ‘ask at counter for any allergy advice’. Other than that was good.

Genuinely a great fish and chips. Chips are crispy and clearly cut every day and made to order. Fish is juicy and has a very nice, light, thin and crispy batter. Perfection.

My order was messed up. I confirmed it with the person I ordered from that I have a large cod and tarter sauce takeaway. They gave me small cod, few chips and curry sauce. Called back to store and they said no manager in till next week. They had no care that I was given the wrong order. They only cared that I did not write a complaint. Terrible service. Terrible in dealing with complaint.

I like healthier food (not fried) and I was so glad to discover that this restaurant offers a grilled fish and chips option! This made my day! I was also very impressed with the friendliness of the stuff as well as with how clean the restaurant was. So a great experience all around! Witnessed the situation with disabled people. The care woman was full of hatred. Telling the staff they are little shi.t. Threatening to write in Internet bed reviews, so nobody would come to the shop. Wishing the God would never bless them. How somebody say such things?! She should not be allowed to look after the most vulnerable people! It was very stressful experience. Nobody looked after disable person. He took the food from other customer plate. But even after that, everyone was very polite and helpful!

DO NOT GO HERE. Absolutely vile treatment by the managers (a man and a woman) towards people with learning disabilities. Made to feel so unwelcome with dirty looks and complete inappropriate behaviour with standing right behind someone at our table. A little compassion and empathy wouldn’t go amiss as well as basic manners like asking if they can take a plate away before grabbing it from the table. I have never experienced such rudeness in a restaurant or similar my whole life. I went with a group of six and it left us feeling so upset and angry. Would never step back here again and if I could give 0 stars I would. If you ever have anyone in your life with additional needs I hope they would never be treated in this way.

Great food, lovely view. But the resturant is a higher price than the takeaway, and you cant sit outside their shop with a takeaway.

Hands down one of the best fish and chips we have had! The fish and even the chips were so fresh, the staff is very professional and the restaurant is very clean and well kept. If you’re in Portsmouth, you definitely need to try this place!

Chips are dry and oily at the same time. Odd but I liked them. Yes you can sit in, by why do that when you can takeaway and sit on the bench by the sea?

I come here everyday for my break as a coach driver, the food is excellent, battered sausages are amazing and the fish is so fresh it's flaky and not dry. The chips are amazing. The staff are friendly, welcoming and amazing. It's always clean and have plenty of comfortable seating. If you are visiting Portsmouth then add this place to your visits you won't be disappointed

My wife and I stayed in Portsmouth for 3 nights and came across this Fish and Chips restaurant on the sea front, just opposite the train station. So we ventured in for an evening meal, we wasn't really expecting too much other than the usual bog standard fish and ships. But holy smoke were we pleasantly surprised. This has to be the best fish and chips I think I've literally ever eaten. The portions were very substantial which came at a well worth cost. The Fish and Chips was cooked fresh as expected and was served by the very friendly chef. I was extremely surprised by the freshness and quality of the fish which was moist and flaky and wished I'd asked for the recipe for that light crispy golden batter. I suppose given the fact the restaurant is situated on the sea front you'd expect the fish to be fresh, but this was super fresh and well worth every penny. My wife and I will be paying you a visit again in the very near future when we come back to Portsmouth. I'd also like to say thank you for your friendly service to the lovely young lady who we had a chat with.

Best fish and chips I've ever had! Haddock was fried perfectly to keep the juice, batter was crispy with just the right thickness to give a perfect balance with the fish. Freshly fried when you order and the batter won't become soggy even for your last bite. Remarkable!! Will definitely come back when I travel to Portsmouth again.

Had Fish and chips dining in and they tasted great. I'd recommend the haddock. Chips were very tasty and mushy peas were very good.

Best fish and chips in Pompey. An unassuming little place but always with a warm welcome and great food. I Always eat in here rather than get a take away and the fish is always so fresh, perfectly cooked with lovely batter that's not too thick and just right. Delicious! It maybe just needs a little music in the back to improve the atmosphere but otherwise great.

The staff were super friendly, and the fish was very crispy. I would suggest adding a little salt.

Something smelled fishy but was probably the fish

We were visiting Royal Dockyards & needed a reasonably priced lunch & saw this restaurant just outside the docks. The staff were excellent so friendly & helpful, the seating area was very clean & welcoming & the food was excellent, portions were very generous & great value for money as very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend using this restaurant when visiting the docks rather than paying an extortionate fee for second rate fish n chips.

Came in today after not being here for so long. Staff have changed hands. Order three cod and chips and two drinks. £33! Not a good price. The food tasted horrible. This was while our cod was being fried before hand and we had to wait for it to be handed to us. There was nobody inside and I'm not surprised. This has nothing to do with the bad weather. Won't be coming back.

Their chicken burger and fries are good. They have options for drinks. They were quick in serving food. But a bit disappointed with their sitting place. Why there has to be an extra charge for dine-in? I do not know if is it just there or all places?

I have never enjoyed such treat from a fish and chip shop - and it happened in Portsmouth! The owners were very kind to accept my order 2 minutes before they closed, as I was thirsty for some saveloy and battered sausages. Crispy batter is absolutely gorgeous!

We visited the Historic Dock Yard we was early and decided to have some chips before we went in. Yeah it was good food and they offer a sit in service and that was great. Would have no hesitation going back.

When I checked the place before the visit, I thought it was take away only but they have tables inside for dine in as well. We had freshly made cod and chips, fish cake and onion rings. All were quite nice. The service was friendly and with smiles. We tried pickled egg with mayonnaise (suggested by the chef) and enjoyed the taste. If you are looking for fish and chips in your Portsmouth trip, this is the place to consider.

Dropped in to have a chippy dinner. Was great to sit down in their restaurant area. Chips were tasty, I had cod roe with mine, I did enjoy it all. There was a good choice of food, cold and hot drinks available. Would recommend it. Was there late afternoon and it was empty to sit down, but lots of people having taken away food. Nice friendly helpful staff. Price was OK, but in these times, everything is going up.

This is the second time going in here after a day visit to the Historical dockyards. This is a great place to eat very reasonable prices. The food is cooked so good would highly recommend eating in there. Also the good thing is it is so lovely and clean and staff are very friendly. Look forward to visiting it again .

Disappointing. Maybe it was too late in the day? Chips were soggy and a good piece of fish was spoilt by undercooked batter. Oil wasn't hot enough? Only o.k.

I was sceptical before going in since I haven't had the most pleasant experience in the UK with Fish and Chips. However, on getting a recommendation from the staff, I tried the Haddock Fish and Chips and was surprised at the medley of flavours. With the quantity of chips and mashed peas that comes alongwith besides the soft texture and the quality of the fresh fish, this place is a must try for tourists seeking out this famous UK dish and for locals wishing to relish it once again.

A very fine Chippy. Not overly expensive but the quality is definitely above average. For a coastal chip shop the chips are actually very good, crispy and chunky. The haddock was a decent size and high quality.

It was OK not much chips for the money

We had tea from here after travelling down from Yorkshire. Did some Google search and thought I'd give it a go. The fish was OK but the chips were stale like they had been sat there about 2 week. The sausage wernt cooked properly either made my son sick. Would not recommend

AVOID! I was having Friday late afternoon pints in the Ship Anson pub near this chip shop and at tea-time foolishly fancied PROPER fish and chips from a harbour-side chippy, and this shop seemed to fit the bill. Gaggle of men waiting to be served, so that seemed good. Asked for plaice and chips and fish was cooked to order, again that seemed promising. £9.70, served in a polystyrene tray (eurk). Walked along the Quay to eat it (beware seagulls) and found the fish was VILE. The seagulls seemed to enjoy it though, when I threw it upwards! A greyish, thin piece of god knows what encased in a thick slab of soggy batter. It wasn't plaice and I doubt it was any type of fish. Chips weren't too bad tho, to be fair. I can only think that they don't sell much plaice and they found this hiding at the bottom of the freezer and thought I wouldn't complain (I didn't, had walked too far to go back / cba). My friend ordered cod and chips at the same time, and said his was okayish - but don't take that as a recommendation. Next time I'm in the Ship Anson I'll stick with eating there.
