Great fish and chips at great prices! Always go here for their cod bites and amazing portion size, we get 1 portion to share between too and still struggle to finish them.

Fish over cooked and the oil needs changing not good

I popped in to get a single bit of fish purely to make a toast to my mum. Everywhere my mum went she had fish and chips, anyway I can honestly say this is the worst bit of fish I've ever had in my life. It was disgusting, skin still on it and not fried to make it crisp. Absolutely will never ever set foot in this place again, it was shocking.

Don’t order , scammers don’t deliver food and take money and don’t answer phone be aware stay away..............!

I heard a lot about this chippy however it definitely didn’t live up to the stand iv heard about it. Service was good lady was really nice so was the man. However the chips and cod bites were awful. Sorry to say honestly food was not good at all.

Good menu - covers all that you'd expect from a f&c shop and enough veggie options. The food was tasty. Average pricing. Staff polite, efficient, easy on the eye. Only thing I'd suggest is some seating while you wait.

Had to give one star rating to post this review, no star would have been given had I had a choice. Absolute shambolic service. Go in to order your food face to face and your ignored in favour of all the lazy people at home using just eat, uber eat etc etc. Won't be giving my business to them again... like they would care anyway.

Appsolutely diabolical!!!! First of the food turned up and one on the drinks was missing ( which is no surprise with most take aways around here with missing items ) The driver said to phone the shop about it and we did and we could not get through and the staff hanging up the phone is well. We opened up the bag and discovered 3 out of 4 ketchups was missing and also the jumbo battered sausage was missing too, not to mention the chips was cold and tasteless and dry. We will not be using you again, very disappointed too. Save your money guys and go somewhere else, there food is over priced for what's it worth, its not worth it.

Nice little local fish and chip shop, with a friendly owner. Only popped in for a quick portion of chips- which were delicious. Menu looked decent enough to return for dinner when I'm next in town 😀

Although it was late and close to closing time, we would have expected good quality fish and chips. What we got was really disappointing. It all tasted like the oil it was cooked in had been burnt. Fish batter was crispy but fish inside was dry. Sorry to say it all went in the bin and we went to bed hungry! Will not be revisiting this particular fish and chip shop.

Large chips......more like a small, fish was fine but last few times we've had chips and they're always very small portions. Dissatisfied, tried calling as not far away but no answer. Sadly like a lot of eateries just eat, uber eats etc has meant they've bitten off more than they can chew.......sadly unlike us

What. The. Hell. Happened?. The chips were disastrous, seems like they had been under a heat lamp for ages. The BATTERED sausage, where the batter at? Thinnest batter ever, overcooked. Nope. This used to be a great chip shop to buy great food from, it was my local. Not anymore, it's a complete let down. Sad times. 😒

Tony and the Family are great. Brilliant food, even better service glad to still have a family run business so close to home.

At best average, fish was ok, chips were awful, hugely greasy, which meant the fish was soggy and fat filled. Fish was a good size, just a really shame the chips were drained…. As for salt and vinegar well, no idea we’re that was … shame. Won’t be returning.

Ordered online wont again threw 90% away pea fritter vile chips so soggy and tasted odd and fish dry oily best part was pineapple fritter and milkshake very disappointed as decided to give it a go regret it now ended up having a sandwich

Changed my intial review as they are advertised in Just Eat, but Just Eat no longer take the orders from them. Use Deliveroo instead. Lovely chips and a massive cod. The money vs quality is amazing. Highly recommended

Ordered via Deliveroo. We we staying at Premier Inn Isambard Brunel Road. Rider went all the way up to Hilsea, wrong direction. Then came back. The pea fritter was ok. The chips were cold. There was no salt and vinegar in spite of order. The fish was swimming in grease, dark burned and soggy batter. Not good. The gravy portion was very salty. The mushy peas were passable. Fortunately the chemically sweet cherry milk shake banished the rancid taste of the half eaten meal.

Been using Excell for years, best Chippy Chips in Pompey, unless you prefer the Kebab shop style Chips or Frozen Chips, if you do then go elsewhere and don't leave Excell a bad review just because you didn't get your own way. I've ordered from other Chippies and they either keep changing their sausage supplier, i've had some horrid tasting Battered Sausages elsewhere but Excell's have always been consistently tasty. I like my battered Cod Crispy, if you like yours soggy then go elsewhere. Excell are fairly generous, their Chips are rustic because they are fresh cut chips, unlike most chippies who use frozen chips. Well deserved 5 stars, especially for consistency. Have to admit once my Chips were not up to their usual standard but it was late in the evening and only once so no big deal.

Ordered online on Just Eat... Not good.. Chips look like they had been reheated from dinner time, dry and had a burnt taste to them and dark brown in colour... Fish was again dry, batter overcooked... Won't be using this place again... Wish I saw the review earlier on here about the mouldy pie.... Shocking!

Only had chip's but they weren't very nice, tasted old. The oil may need changing. The people serving were not wearing aprons and the clothes they were wearing were very dirty. The shop was not very clean either. Will not be going back.

Walked in , ordered the food , the order was written down but they still got it wrong , young girl was more interested in her friends stood outside to even read the order correct, tried to call to get a refund no one answers even though they weren’t busy at all, supposed to be excel what a joke not even mediocre

Sorry iv had to so this placed order at 5pm didnt shop didnt pick up waited 3 hrs cancelled order re order waited another 2 hrs still didn't turn up cancelled again kids had beans on toast and just gone to bed at 22 45

Family, Father and Son local business.Written in stone in my community. Never a day shut in the last 17 or 20 years I can remember... unless a refit. Tony is a Master Fryer and his son is the same. Always spotless clean with generous portions of food worthy of a generations now. Top local boys

Totally disappointed pre ordered a treat meal for myself&kids to get wrong order and no way to rectify it as no one answers phone so spent £23.85 no food and no refund will keep trying to call but already tried 10times and left voicemails

Excellent food, tasty and plenty of it, been coming here for years.

I used to frequent this place many years ago as a kid and the chips were amazing. That was about 30 years ago now so I decided to give it a try again and I was not disappointed by any means. The portions were really good and the fish and chips were all cooked to perfection, every bit as good as I remember it being. Costs a little bit more than my usual chippy but I would say it was well worth it. Quality comes at a price. I will definitely be back again. :)

Just received our delivery. Unfortunately we had a chips missing and a large cod. Tried to ring just eat and yourselves and we couldn't not get through to eaither. My father in law and husband had to share there tea. What we asked for was on our receipt, just not in the bag.

So much for your money and tastes amazing.

Was given a wait time for the delivery to be 7.44pm then was told 9.04pm its now 9.40pm and I am still waiting and I will be going to bed in 15 minutes won't be ordering from them again

I have been using this fish and chip shop for over 20 years for my meat-free Friday meal. The fish has never been less than excellent and the chip portions are huge. I drive a couple of miles from home to get to this chippy and pass 3 or 4 other chippies to get to Excel. It is well worth it.

Best chippy in the town. Very nice, polite staff and food is cooked to order and fabulous. Portions are on the larger size, making this place even more cost effective

I use the Excell most Friday evenings. Fish is always well battered, and the chips portions are very large.

Worst fish and chips ever Chips where burnt and after taking the batter away there was about 10p worth of cod, had to go to a different chip shop

We have used the Excell for a long time and always found the food to be of a good quality.

The size of the fish is super good value, the chips were a wee bit overdone for my taste. The staff were very friendly and courteous. Will definitely try again.

Been few times in last few weeks. Each time chips were soggy and dripping in oil. They were cold. The pies were over cooked the outer edge were hard. Gone downhill over the past months.

Got a large portion of chips - gone up to £2.90. They were terrible; literally the worst chips I've had in years. I was busy so I thought why not? Wish I hadn't. All burnt, all soggy, none crispy. Must have been the dregs of the old batch. Portion size has lessened too. Couldn't taste the salt or vinegar, which made them so much worse.

Really disappointed tonight. Been going to this chippy for the last couple years, always had brilliant food. Tonight though the chips were rank. Cold and greasy. Clearly chips have been in there a long time. Poor customer service. Won't be returning

Dropped in after a 15 year break and the cod and chips were just as I remembered. Took them up to Portsdown Hill and demolished them whilst enjoying the vista over Portsea Island. Happy days, thanks Tony.

Usually good generous chips but cycled 3 miles at 10:20pm on a Saturday and it was shut. Door and online said closes at 11pm. Pissed off.

Después de años de estar cerca me mudé lejos. Mientras se pasa sólo tenía que disfrutar de las patatas fritas no siempre este lugar maravilloso... Un poco decepcionado, no se parece en nada a lo que solía ser... Porción era enorme, así que es el mismo pero las patatas fritas no ayudaban demasiado para mí ya. Todavía está muy bien, pero no genial. Algo en excel siempre superado.

The fish and chips from this shop are always excellent. All food is freshly cooked and the staff take pride in their work. This is a proper family run business with very high standards. I would highly recommend this fish bar!

The freshest fish battered to perfection, always a queue which is always a dead give away for quality, we have been coming here regularly for 13 years, never had a bone in all this time, the fish is always fresh and the portion of chips is ample to share between us. we were recommended by a friend when we were talking about a decent chipy in the area about a year after we moved to Portsmouth, never gone anywhere else since. we have recommended it to friends and they no longer go anywhere else, when we have friends down to stay they always ask if we are going to have fish and chips while they are down. totally recommend Excell.

He utilizado este "fish and chips" muchas veces y siempre he tenido una buena comida. pero prepárate para hacer cola, ya que su buen tamaño casi siempre concurrida raciones de bacalao y patatas fritas son lo suficientemente grandes para dos personas.

Had cod and chips there on way to cross channel ferry and so good had them on way back. As ever the key is fresh unfrozen fish cooked while you wait. Great value. Worth a 50 mile detour.
