Just called in for lunch as we were passing. Great dog friendly pub. The food was great, the young staff were very friendly & welcoming. Definately recomend.

Food was good, and I had fish and chips with mushy peas ,but there was just a trace of mushy peas smeared on the fish. A proper portion of mushy peas should be provided.

Had 2 enjoyable visits to this Joseph Holt establishment. It's a quirky pub with its own atmosphere. On both occasions there weren't many people in due to the time and day of visit, so the service was very good. The food is a little expensive but well cooked and tasty on our experience.

Food was delicious as always, staff very attentive and some live music to dine to, perfect Sunday.

Very disappointing Sunday lunch. One would expect that a Sunday roast would come with a reasonable amount of meat. Not so today. Just one very thin piece of beef. The veg and potatoes were fine, but skimping like that is not on. There is much better value locally.

This pub has become our favourite place to visit regularly. Beautiful building and outdoor area. The Landlord and the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent, very tasty. We would highly recommend this pub . Love it!

Just had a lovely meal with my parents this evening. Came to eat here as we were recommended by a friend. Everything about the evening was perfect. Will defo come again. No complaints from me. Meant to ask servers names but skipped My mind. Served by a youngish waiter with black.hakr who knew what he was talking about. And a Waitress with Red hair who recommended the Steak and Ale pie. Everything was perfect. Congrats for a good strong team.

Often quiet in the week. Staff are lovely, food good. Great outdoor seating area in the summer. A good choice if you want to eat and talk in a pleasant environment.

First visit here but we will be back. Exceptionally warm welcome from bar staff. Service thereafter was excellent. Well balanced and reasonably priced menu. Roast Sunday Lunch is the best I have had anywhere for many years. The vegetables were cooked to perfection. There was a choice of meats. Option of additional side orders eg cauliflower cheese but to be honest there were enough trimmings without the need for side orders. The plates were hot and so was every item in the meal.

Excellent service. Lovely building. Food tasty...what there was of it . If you are hungry this place will not fill you or meet your needs. Small portions. And expensive.

Lovely place, beautiful food and excellent customer service. Visited here with a friend and got the vegan nut roast dinner and it was beautiful. The place is really nice but what really stood out for me was how nice all the staff were, especially Conrad. This young lad was polite and courteous and is a real credit to the organisation, as is all the staff. It great to go to a place that really knows what customer service is! If there was one thing I could have wished for, it was oat milk for a tea, as I am vegan. Thank you, I will be back! 👍🏻🙏🏻

I've had a few meals here over the past year, but today's meal was poor on so many fronts that I left feeling angry and wishing I had sent my food back. First, some positives; the welcome was friendly and the staff were nice, even if the service was really really slow - around an hour for the main to come. My food really was appalling. The starter was Halloumi Popcorn and for around £7 I got six or seven 1cm cubes of Halloumi, deep fried, with a small amount of honey on the side. It was paltry and stingy, and frankly how anyone could think that serving such a pitiful, lazy dish for £7 is beyond me. The fact that mine was made up of several bits that were just hardened batter with no actual halloumi in it made it worse. I wish I had sent it back, but I didn't want to cause a scene at such a happy occasion. My main was the £17.25 Cheese, Onion and Potato pie, which seemed like it had perhaps been left standing for some time before it had come out. The pie needed longer in the oven, the chips seemed like bog standard oven chips and the 'garlic buttered greens' amounted to about 4 stone-cold half-sized green beans covered in a wet piece of sautéed spinach. It was served with a lukewarm cheese sauce that had started to develop a skin. It was obvious that it had been sat for a while before serving. Perhaps I would be more inclined to forgive some of this if the prices weren't so over-inflated, but alas, with a soft drink and the service charge, my share of the bill was £35, which for what I had was about as welcome as a punch in the face. I would urge you not to eat here, or to have no hesitation in sending your food back if you are served anything similar to what I have described - I certainly wish I had.

"Dog Friendly - People Friendly - come on in" the sign says at the door. Not when we visited.....terribly clique, the dog friendly section of the pub is postage stamp sized and the barman took our order in between his conversation over the bar with his mates - not the most welcoming of places I've been in!

We visited for lunch, the small plates are delicious and our go to venue for lunch!

We arrived as a small festive works party of 7 and the staff were excellent. Food was glorious and you felt properly fed afterwards. Thank you for making it a very enjoyable few hours.

Food isn’t as good as it used to be unfortunately. Especially when compared to other pubs in the area with similar prices.

We went for lunch today. We have been before and always enjoyed the food. Not sure what was going on today food was poor service was slow considering about 20 people in there. It appeared there was 1 portion of chips between us all and they had been counted out on the plate! In stark contrast had a great meal in cat and lion a few weeks ago part of the same chain. We also asked if the mash could be changed for chips - it could, but we would still be charged for the chips! We even asked for a festive menu which never appeared since prior to going today we were going to book for Boxing Day. Don’t worry we don’t need the menu any more. We are trying to support a local business might as well go to Wetherspoons in town! Less than half the price and better quality.

Excited to visit a Holts pub, not for beer but gluten free food. The menu has been changed beyond recognition. There are only 2 gluten free items on the menu. I had Spanish tortilla, it was twice cooked, tested of nothing other than the unwanted sauce thrown on top. Other dish was chicken skewers which were over cooked. Everything was served with lots of pardon peppers.

Recently renovated, the Cock is now a great place to stop for lunch. plenty of parking on the forecourt. Inside, it is split in to a number of different area presenting you with choices of the restaurant or more cosy bar areas. Food is imaginative with some interesting twists: chicken skwers served with intersting sides and, for example, moroccan hummus. Also the rib-eye steak ciabatta with a fried egg (and fries of course). Nice food, served nicely and reasonable prices.

Accommodated 7 of us for dinner at very short notice following a huge mess up by Pizza Express in Stockton Heath. Food good, service excellent and reasonably priced.

Lovely staff and brilliant service, the food was brilliant and had a unique yet great taste. The pub is a great bit of history, definitely recommend!

Use this fine establishment regularly and it is Great. Great food, joey Holt beer so all good, and landlord/manager Paul (Baz) is just the nicest bloke around. Best pub in the area and there's a couple good pubs nearby so that's an achievement ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Worst food the Sunday dinner was the worst I have had it was so dry and vegetables were so hard and pigs in blanket were black and burnt what a waste of money £47 pounds

Great pub with lots of character. First time at this venue but it won’t be our last. Lovely pub with lots of different rooms to dine or drink in. Very polite and attentive staff. Food was top class and it goes without saying, you get what you pay for.

Had really nice meal on a Tuesday evening to celebrate our planning permission after going to the George and Dragon to find it closed - glad it was, as we had a lovely meal with great, friendly service.

Really enjoyed eating here last night. Wet and miserable outside, log fire and friendly staff inside. Food was well prepared, fresh and tasty. Comfortably busy. Returned for Sunday lunch on Father's Day with family. Roast pork lunch was excellent, as was the service. Visited July 24 lunchtime to try new menu. Ribeye steak ciabatta was tasty and plenty big enough. Enjoyed it.

Eaten here on three occasions the first two were very good experiences, we ate here recently on a Sunday (early afternoon) The sharing roast platters for two are no longer available which was disappointing. I ordered the fish and chips, I’m certain it said it included mushy peas and salt and vinegar scraps, the peas were on the plate when it arrived but no scraps, I was hungry so didn’t pull them up on this and thought that I could have been mistaken anyway, peas were only luke warm, very small fish portion and just something similar to what you can buy frozen from a supermarket and not many chips. The portion size was very poor for the price, around £16.50 from memory. The two roasts that were also ordered, one chicken and one beef, apart from not enough gravy, the feedback was positive. Maybe a small jug of gravy on the side could be considered. One steak pie, no complaints there, but again in my opinion it was a poor sized portion for the price paid. The remaining meal got served as the one not ordered, apologies were made by the waitress and around 5 minutes later the correct meal arrived. Service was slow on the whole, but the staff were very polite and friendly which is a positive. On the whole it was overpriced for what we received, hence no tip was given, and we are usually good tippers. I will monitor the feedback on here and will probably try it again if the reviews significantly and consistently improve.

I went here yesterday 8th July 2024 We were a party of 5 adults 1 child: We were met by a friendly team member, she was very helpful. The food was delicious, I had a great tasting cheese/potato pie. The only food missing from the mains was a ‘fish dish’ which I would have liked to have seen. Other than that….. Everyone enjoyed the food 5 stars! The friendly, helpful staff 5 stars! Give this place a try you won’t be disappointed:

I was terribly disappointed in the food, been to this restaurant plenty of times for the Sunday Roast however, no roast turkey or sharing platter this was replaced with half a chicken on the bone, the beef was wafer thin and fatty, Yorkshire pudding tasted of grease and not the normal size. Roast potatoes were soggy the small amount of veg was hidden under the meat and hardly any gravy. Understated the restaurant changed in June and is now solely owned by the brewery. Waiter staff lovely but when you pay good money for a roast you expect it to be worth it. Not the only disappointment customer table next to use too commented on the quality. Finally no cider other than fruit something else they have got rid of. Sadly will not be eating her again .

Been here many a time and recommended to family and friends but this afternoon was very disappointing.. very lightly cooked chicken, 2 roast pots, a spoonful of mash… slither of gravy, minimal veg just not worth the £50 myself and partner paid .. feel really let down and will not be recommending again.. we’ve had better at the Toby carvery for a 1/4 of the price! Did not complain whilst there but after thinking long and hard I will do so via email!! Has this changed hands? Chef??

Ordered two fish sandwiches. Wasn't clear that there were chips with it on the menu (neighbouring table did the same) so ordered chip to share. No mention by the bar staff that they come with chips when ordering. Food arrived with semi warm provided chips, after conveying that we weren't aware it came with them, he offered to send them back. My partners fish was mainly hard batter. When asked if everything was ok late on in the meal my partner conveyed our thoughts and nothing was really said back. Not dealt with at all. Have eaten here 5 or 6 times. Should we go back???? Doubt it

Pork Belly Sunday roast is delicious, all the sides tasted like they were just cooked and really high quality. Huge Yorkshire pud had that moorish soft pastry taste. Large Garden area out the back with plenty of tables and kids climbing frame etc. Very quiet around here so it's a glorious place to be on a sunny day! Only areas of improvement I can think of are some of the tables outside need to be sanded & painted, the pork could have been 10-20% more succulent (it's still up there though) and maybe the same with the mash but that's a personal preference. Oh, you really need to advertise the Yorkshire Puddings on the website, if I'd known about them I would have stopped looking at other places immediately! £22 for Roast, the best Yorkshire pud in the world and a drink. 10/10 and will be coming back.

Lovely old pub. We were staying at Belmont Camping nearby and it was nice to be able to walk there. About 15 minute walk. Very welcoming and friendly staff. We ate in the bar, as we had a dog. The restaurant area looked good. Food served quickly and home cooked. Pie, fish and chips were very good. Children had fish goujons which was nice but pricey at £8.95. Would recommend.

Don't get to visit here often but never disappointed with food. Wonderful & quirky building with a fantastic atmosphere, large garden at rear & seating at front. Food was amazing, freshly prepared & cooked and DELICIOUS! Went all out as birthday treat so 3 courses, drink & coffee.

Thank you to Paul and his staff.They cancelled a meal on my party in December because of circumstances beyond their control.Paul did however offer us complimentary meals which we finally used last week.The coal fire was a delight and the food was good with the service excellent.

Booked a table online. Ordered food hadn't arrived after an hour. Asked if the food had started to be cooked, if not we will happily go. Was then told if we want to go we can do and not be charged for the drink we had. Strange and poor customer service. Was our first time visit. Can't comment on food as we didn't have any

Allways fantasic food and service

This pub is a little gem steeped in history. Very English and very cosey. My wife and I really enjoyed our visit. The food is affordable and plentiful, and the staff are chatty and friendly. The manager kindly told me about the history of the pub which was so interesting. If ever you're in the area, I recommend a visit for a shandy and a meal.

Cant leave a minus review so 1 it is. Popped in and asked for table for 6 people with 3 dogs (dog friendly pub) was told by a waiter that he would find out while grinning, came back said there was only a 4 and a 2 table available which he pointed out in the bar, we asked when a table big enough would be free, again waiter grinned and said I don't know and then said about 8.30pm so we said we would take the 4 and the 2, the grinner then disappeared again, came back with the "manager" who said the kitchen was under alot of pressure and they couldn't accommodate us....while we stood outside and ordered a takeaway I read the reviews about food quality and prices so think we dodged a bullet and a high bill....manager needs to read reviews as hes been complained about several times, staff need to learn manners. Won't return there again. Very rude management and staff..... they need to remember that customers pay their wages.

Had lovely lunch here on 15/2/24, with friends after a walk. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The pub was warm with a real fire and comfortable seats. Price of meal reasonable compared with other pubs. Would go again.

Lovely food. Just strange that the nut roast (ve), that comes with vegetable stock gravy is only served with goose fat roasties and no alternative offered so we had to pay for cauliflower cheese as an extra rather than instead of. And no Yorkshire pudding with the nut roast? Not much of a roast really if vegetarian/vegan.

Stopped in for a break mid-walk and couldn't resist trying the Sunday roast. So glad we did because WOW! Everything was delicious and the yorkshires were (no joke) the size of our heads. They treated our dog like an absolute king too and gave him some turkey free of charge which was so kind. Fab food, fab service and a really lovely atmosphere. 100% recommend

This is the second Sunday roast we’ve had in a couple of weeks & it’s up there with the best. A warm welcome & cosy feel with roaring fires. Good service, friendly & efficient staff & tasty food…excellent all round.

Visited whilst staying at Belmont Hall Campsite. Ordered sandwiches for lunch. Portions were large and food was amazing. Dogs allowed in the bar area and treats available too. Sunday Yorkshire pudding burrito was huge and definitely recommended. Great pint too. We shall definitely be back!

Best Sunday roasts around. All served in an atmospheric traditional country pub with good service and good wine. Highly recommend.

Excellent food, drink and service from start to finish. We booked a last minute (5 days ago) meal for 21 of us to celebrate a family birthday on New Years Day. The service we got was second to none and the food was excellent. We chose widely from across the menu, with steaks, fish and chips, salmon, beef, salads, sandwiches and children’s meals. The food was excellent which mirrored the service. Would definitely recommend for a family meal and the function room was a great space. We will most definitely be back.
