What a great place! Very quiet for a Saturday lunchtime, we really hope people discover this little countryside gem! We had a lovely burger to share and delicious beer in the spacious garden. Worried to see that it’s up for sale! We hope it’s not because it’s too quiet and that it can keep going, and whoever runs it keeps it as good as it is at the moment!

After a 5 mile walk, we were ready for a good meal at the Cock. Although I had made a booking by email earlier in the week - which had been accepted - we arrived at 1pm to finf the place shut and the car park empty. As the next pub is 2 miles away, by the time we arrived there they had stopped serving food. We were not amused. Locals we met on the way confirmed that opening times are very hit and miss. Be warned!

Stopped in for a late lunch for four and thought it was very nice. Service was a little on the slow side but we weren't in a rush so suited us. All had roast dinners and desserts and thought it was very tasty and actually well priced at £12 for the basic roast and £6 for dessert. I wouldnt have wanted to pay more for what it was though. Lacking crispy potatoes but was still nice. Its really light and airy inside and looked to have a nice beer garden out the back. A good amount of parking space too. Will go back to try the mid-week menu.

We went to the pub after a lovely walk around Great Thurlow and Little Thurlow - some fabulous rural Suffolk views. We had based our visit for lunch on some of the other Trip Advisor reviews, but to be honest we thought this was a rather average menu. Pleasant enough, but the burger was a bit expensive for what it was and the bread in the sandwiches was far to thick (doorsteps) with not much filling. Real ale was good.

Made very welcome after a long drive with my wife and sister, nice and warm inside. Had a coffee then spent the afternoon watching rugby and chatting over a few drinks. 60th birthday party arranged for the evening & it went very well. Waitress and bar staff brilliant, food was excellent, baked goats cheese salad then pea and leek risotto for me - so tasty. I'm not vegetarian but often choose veggy when out. Only three staff but they work hard and there is no delay in getting service.

Travelled some distance to meet our family for a special birthday celebration this weekend and we were so glad that we did! A very relaxed and clean atmosphere with very friendly and attentive staff and an amazing chef who provided us with a three course meal that was absolutely delicious! The spicy tomato soup with crusty bread was so tasty, followed by the pork belly which was accompanied by the delicious red cabbage and veg. And the sticky toffee pudding was the best I’ve ever tasted! The rest of the family had pate, steaks, fish, cheese board and we couldn’t fault a thing! Ideal for family meals, romantic meals, get together with friends and family.

I visited here just yesterday evening having been treated to a birthday dinner out by my very good friend. The pub was warm and welcoming, the staff friendly and attentive. When we first arrived at the bar we were offered a small taste of a bitter before buying, the bar staff were more than happy to help. Excellent choice of on tap bitter, reasonably priced. Dinner was excellent, I think the steak slightly over priced for what it was but still it was good. Dessert was excellent, highly recommend the chocolate brownie. Service was spot on. Look forward to visiting here again very soon.

Had dinner here December 2017, we were told on arrival that it was under new management. We had not eaten here before so had nothing to compare to. To say we were impressed would be an understatement. Staff were friendly, service was excellent...and the food was fantastic. It was so good we had 3 courses. The menu is fixed price for 2 or 3 courses...to be honest I would have paid more. The food was tasty, well cooked, well presented. Between us we had 6 different dishes, all were up to the same standard. Staff were knowledgeable as to which meals were gluten free (there were 2 starters and 2 mains) and a vegetarian option. We enjoyed everything and will definitely eat here again.

It's difficult to understand what this place is trying to be. Décor like a tea shop but with an ambiguous menu, neither one thing nor the other. We mentioned to the server that the menu was confusing to start with, which was met with ambivilence.. Wine not chllled. Food ordered: Ham, duck egg and triple cooked chips and Fiorentina pizza. Waited almost an hour..... Food arrived: Ham egg and chips lukewarm - unsurprising. First rule of catering; if you put hot food on cold plates, it won't stay hot for long. Warm your plates! Chips definitely not 'triple cooked', egg from a duck dubious. Pizza burnt at edges soggy in centre. Knife not adequate to cut it and no offer of a pizza cutter. At no time were we asked if our meal was to our satisfaction even on paying bill, which we had to go to the bar to do or we'd likely have been waiting another hour. With only 3 tables taken for lunch, it was puzzling as to why the service was so slow. Smell of burning on exit and a glance into the kitchen revealed a burning pan. New chef needed perhaps and revamp of menu. In short, attractive looking place did not live up its pretentious facade. Won't return and wouldn't recommend.

We had been told the food was really good, but unfortunately we did not find this so. It didn't help that when we arrived they had no reservation for us despite me having received an e-mail a couple of nights before confirming my reservation! The service was very poor and we did not receive our starter for some considerable time - ( portion was rather small) the main course was again very late and we had been there well over an hour before we received it. The pub appeared to be run by very young and inefficient staff. One of the pork belly main courses was very tough and having asked for extra veg as a side order we were disappointed to find that the meat was served on the same vegetable as the side order??? Surely the waitress should have been knowledgeable enough to know what the main course was being served with???We complained and the owner of the pub did apologize and we were not charged for that meal. There was in fact only one other veg available on the menu as a side order - the owner said that several vegetables were always being returned to the kitchen uneaten!!! Is that an excuse to punish other customers who actually do like a choice of veg??Rather disappointed on the whole - not sure if we would go back??We got the general feeling that there was quite a bit of inexperience ? maybe this will improve!

Went here with 3 friends on Friday evening. A very lovely welcome from all the staff, ordered drinks at the bar and what a great choice. We were shown to our table and the menu's bought to us. A nice selection of starters and mains. One of the starters that we had was the Charcuterie board this was great to share. We had burgers and pizza and truffle chicken all very enjoyable . The only thing that let the evening down for me was the boiled sweets that came with the bill ( chocolate mints are so much nicer) By the time we left the car park was in darkness, not sure if it was because of the time or if there was no lighting in the car park at any time. As all my reviews go. It's my opinionI've been around the block a few times and love good food but value for money is very applicable On arrival for Mother's Day we was asked to seat by a very likeable young lady! The setting was nice, soft furnishings and very airyThe menu arrived which was very bleak. We had one course to choose. And that was Sunday roast. Now I understand the hang ups of a Sunday roast when it comes to ensuring it's right, on time and perfect, but no starter choice. When asked my waitress said we don't do starters on a Sunday but our desert menu will make up for itWe had a good choice of beers and wineWhen the main come it was a completed plate, all the trimmings were already present so no side salvas of extra veg. The beef, rare with no choice for non blood lovers, a handful of greens (peas, leek and cabbage mixed together) one pasnip and three roast potatoes. It was all 'nice'£15 nice for a roast dinner NO! But not bad all the same. Onto the gravy. Has anyone here ever had chicken gravy with red meat? I haven't. The gravy was light not dark, very chicken like with no dark attributes and no tang or sweetness. It was chicken gravy not read meat gravy. The waitress gave an excuse about combined bones used for an multitude of flavour BUT.......... you do not use chicken stock for red meat periodFor what the chef delivered I think he has an easy ride. No starter, no segregation of gravy for white and red meat. What is the chef doing the rest of the time?? He/she has gotta work harderSo deserts. I asked for a cheese board. Has anyone ever had parmesan or Gruyère for cheese board. Well I wasn't that bothered. It when it arrived with 6 cream crackers and a really bad home made apple chutney I thought I'd mention itAnd when I say a really bad apple chutney I mean really bad. I think the cost needs to be pulled back a bit, there needs to be starter choice and let's not try to dress up a Mellor made roastEnjoy. X

I've been to the cock a few times now and am pleased that we have a local that the owner and staff try really hard to keep going for us. The ale selection is ok but only Sharps Doombar and Atlantic. Alex tells me he is going to put Adnams Ghost Ship on this month instead of Atlantic and will be running a small beer festival for being in his own words 'bloody lazy'! about changing them around. To be fair he has tried a few guests and they are always kept well. We have had an evening meal in between Christmas and New Year which was superb- they do a great Italian and everything is freshly made. The new menu starts in Januray as well but we shall wait and see. We had a roast on Sunday and the pub was absolutely packed and justifiably so as it was teh best one I have had in a pub ever. A great welcome ,nice modern and simple décor with friendly staff. It was our third visit expecting it to be improved on what was a good start but it's has gone the other way.It wasn't busy but at 7.30pm they had run out of one of the 3 mains.I had the Bresaola salad to start and I had taken this previously and it was a small portion with very little bresaola and I thought it was just a mistake and accepted that and made allowances as they hadn't been operating for long but no ,on this occasion the bresaola was hardly to be found believe me and I did raise it with the waitress who said don't worry there is more under the salad and I found there wasn't.A big disappointment because bresaola is one of my favourite meat choices. Two mains were described as an Italian beef stew ,there was no stew but a few pieces of beef on a large potion of polenta.Another disappointment ,I suggest that there is a problem in the pricing ,description and /or the pricing but probably in the kitchen.

After pass this property many times and seeing the renovation we decided to try the Sunday roast after a long walk. Nice to see a well renovated and decorative bar all be it a bit sparse. Lovely welcome from the staff but not from the locals. Our entrance was met by many stares and whispered comments. We ordered our drinks and were told where to sit and were very soon greeted by a friendly waitress. Point one, no menus and a small choice of mains. Point two, no Yorkshire puddings and do you need your greens cooked in Garlic? Point three, should the gravy resemble wallpaper paste? Point four, our only choice for desert was ice cream. Point five, the strangest and weakest Horseradish sauce I have ever tasted. Now I do not wish to undermine the good work done by the new owners but we were left wanting more on all accounts. The service was great, the atmosphere was splendid but to survive this establishment needs to make itself open to all and not the 'fine diners' they would like to attract in a small village. Like other reviews before me I was also surprised to see the individual cost per roast dinner. Had we known beef hand then maybe we may have looked elsewhere and avoided a negative review.

It's a lovely pub, very polite service and good food, however, there were some oddities....There is no menu on a Sunday, ok you don't always need one but the only options was three Sunday roasts. No starters available, we had to ask for the dessert menu and there were only two choices and the portion size of the roast was rather disappointing with 1 slice of meat, half a carrot and half a parsnip.....odd. And it was £17.50 for the roast, but you only found out when you got the bill. Good food, not enough of it. Good service, but not clearly explained. Over-priced for the offering on the table. Could be really good with a few tweaks.

In the recent past, The Cock has either been a typical village pub where locals would just go for a pint, some crisps and put money into the juke box and/or the one-armed bandit, or a place that tried the haute cuisine approach but without the atmosphere, personality or surroundings to carry it off.Having decided on the spur of Friday to try the Cock for a meal, we were delighted to find a busy, relaxed place that is not pretentious, gives a friendly welcome (nice to meet you, Lucy), and has a menu with a pretty good choice of dishes that a lot of thought has gone into. With the prospect of a convenience store opening in a room at the rear soon, this could indeed once again be the hub of the village that was sadly lost when the village store closed. It deserves to succeed and we wish them well. We will be back.

Arrived on time for a 6.30 pm booking. Good choice of drinks. White wine could have been colder though. The pub has been redecorated nicely but not sure how long a cream carpet will last in a country pub that allows dogs. Already a little grubby ! Good atmosphere with a mixture of drinkers and diners. A pleasant menu was handed to us with plenty of choice. We made our choices but were told we had to sit at our table so our order could be taken. Slight shame as we actually like standing at the bar for the atmosphere until our food is ready. However we did what we were told ! Ordered food with a very nice waitress. She up sold a side salad to us which we didn't see on the menu however when the bill came we were astonished to see a tomato and mozzarella side salad was £10! We all throughly enjoyed our food. The portions were not very big and mains cost around £17 even for the pizza but I do appreciate the effort put into the food but it is still only a country pub. Very disappointed to see only ice cream as a dessert. What about a lovely tiramisu or lemon tart ?? So £150 for 4 of us. Will return but not that often.

I telephoned to book a table and explained that we would need a high chair l was informed that it was only a roast being served. On arrival we could see our table as the high chair was already there, usually at restaurants someone is chasing around while we sit to get the high chair so this showed they had taken on board we had a child with us. The meal was lovely although a little limited, with a choice of either beef or chicken. Our table tried both and both were very nice. We did miss the Yorkshire pudding though and l feel for the price this could be added. I feel that your desserts need to be expanded there was only a choice of ice cream, although very nice it's not what everyone wants and lm aware you missed out on an income as the table near us asked for dessert but did not want ice cream so left. All in all a pleasant Sunday roast with the benefit of being local to us. Apart from the two little comments lv made food wise everything was lovely. We looked at the weekly menu and although limited at present lm sure we will be coming during the week at some point for dinner Well done and lovely to have the pub back open in the village

Had a really nice evening. However prices were rather high for the quaintlies served.More for the price please.Staff were very attentive but would have liked a fresh set of cutlery for my main coursenot same ones as used for starter. Wine could have been better chilled. All small points I I feel but would have made a Hugh difference.Good luck for the future.

The Cock had only been open for a week after extensive refurbishment when we visited for Sunday lunch. There was a nice buzz about the place. Alex is an excellent host with great support from Jon the chef and his wife Lucy who was our waitress. The menu was small but Alex said this was being expanded within the next couple of weeks to include Sunday roasts. From the homemade pasta and the superb range of homemade ice creams (the lavender & honey is to die for) the food was first class. There is a delightfully decorated private dining room with french doors onto the rear garden which we were told seats 14. I'm a visitor from the US and will make a point of visiting The Cock again when next in the UK. Very best wishes to Alex, Rebecca and their staff for the future. Jan T., Florida USA.

We've now been to the Cock Inn three times over the past couple of weeks and it has quickly become our favourite haunt. The food is exquisite, with the pizza dough and pasta freshly made in-house. The Tartufo is outstanding and on par with the best pizzas I've had in Naples. Uncomplicated, quality food at it's best. This is definitely a village pub with a difference and we're excited about the village shop opening soon.

Just been for a leisurely Sunday lunch at The Cock Inn, Thurlow which recently reopened after a major refurbishment with new owners and a new team. My compliments to Alex and his team for creating a super venue, with lovely staff ( Lucy & her husband who is the chef) and great food. I understand the menu is expanding next week but in the meantime I had the most amazing mushroom, pasta dish and the lavender & honey ice cream is amazing. definitely somewhere I will frequent regularly and would recommend to others.

We heard that The Cock Inn was reopening, and was going to be dog friendly, we decided to make it the stopping off point on our long Sunday walk. We were so impressed, the refurbishments are lovely, staff super friendly (Alex the new landlord greeted and, even though, they were busy we never felt like we had been forgotten). Oh my goodness, the pizzas we ordered were absolutely delicious. Needless to say, we will be going back.

We were thrilled that the Cock has finally reopened after a major refurbishment. It looks absolutely lovely and Alex, Rebecca and their team are doing a great job. With the kitchen in the good hands of Jon and Lucy, they have wisely decided to start with a small menu of charcuterie, pizza, pasta and salads and are expanding the offering slowly with an Italian theme as everyone gets to grips with their new roles. We have eaten there twice and have booked again for next week - both times we have been served excellent fresh food with everything made on the premises and we are looking forward to finding out what we will be served next week. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming for both diners and drinkers.

The pub has been closed and only reopened at the end of July 2016 - everything has been newly decorated in a classic clean style and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The menu at the moment is limited to starters, pizzas, salads and ice cream-with pasta to follow in the following week and meat dishes shortly afterwards. Although there is limited choice at the moment, the food you get is pure quality and I look forward to going again in the future.

Enjoyed the Thai night with the chicken masaman and pork green curries the highlights for me. We ate and ate until we couldn't move so great value and authentic flavours. Giles and Janey were as welcoming as always and the open fire made the evening even cosier. Thanks for a top night!

Despite booking late and arriving as the kitchen was closing we were treated well and served a delicious and freshly prepared Sunday roast for all the family. Homely atmosphere with the fire burning in the background. Need to get a new play area for the kids though especially for spring! Will be back soon x

We returned to the Cock hoping to enjoy more of Connors cuisine but unfortunately he has moved on. We enjoyed a good Sunday Roast and the service was also good. It is always difficult to rate a venue where the cuisine has made such a big change. The Cock is a very good pub offering a modern pub menu.

After the last few months of eating out in restaurants that have promised much and delivered very little we have finally found a gem of a place. Four of the family went out to Thurlow this Saturday night (4th Oct) hoping that we might be in for treat and we were more than impressed by this great place that we understand has had a refurb and a change of chef. The menu is small but perfectly formed which means that you can be assured of freshness. We had delicious Cured ham , figs and buffalo mozzarella. Smoked duck and Deer heart. All so good we were feeding eachother like toddlers. The mains were equally fantastic. Two of us having the Onglet Steaks with broccoli The Jerusalem artichoke risotto and Lamb sweetbreads. The Chocolate tart and the cheeses we also incredible. The chef Connor came out to talk to us as we were raving so much about the food. Antonio the front of house is brilliantly old school from a time where your needs are met with a friendly and efficient but not intrusive attentiveness. Reading some of the other reviews moaning about no salt on the table and the lack of choices is amusing as all the dishes were seasoned to perfection and the selection was perfect , any more choices and we might have been there all night trying to decide. He has been tempted it seems to put on some more dull choices for the locals who are in shock that they cant get ham eggs and chips or sausage and mash. I would say there are plenty of places a stones throw away that cater for that market .We would say "Don't do it Connor !!, Stick to your guns ". If some want that kind of food let them go the Harvester in Haverhill. We will be back again shortly and hope that the menu of unusual and innovative dishes will be what we will be served. Judging by these reviews you will soon be a destination restaurant and my only concern is that we might have trouble getting a table shortly .WELL DONE !!! we are very hard to impress and Trust me we will be spreading the word to all and sundry. WE spent £40 a head that is including lots of lovely beers and wine.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. We all hand exceptional starters, mains and dessert. We were trying each others dishes because it was so good we had to share. You have got to give this restaurant a try. Prices are very sensible, dishes are simple but so well constructed the flavours work so well together.

Ten of us from a neighbouring village had a meal here on Saturday evening. Antonio, who was front of house, was very welcoming, very attentive and a great character. The rest of the staff were equally attentive, and more than coped with providing us with excellent food; everyone said what a great meal they had.Connor the chef came out to talk to us later; he was so passionate and enthusiastic about what he does, he's certainly very talented and will go far, for someone so young. We all wish Connor and Antonio all the very best and hope they achieve the success they deserve.

Thank goodness. I have lived in the neighbouring village of Great Wratting for over 10 years and this pub / restaurant has changed so many times and never got it right.....until now! We took a chance one Friday evening at the end of a long week, after knowing it was under new management.Quite simply the menu is top quality and simple, very well thought out and something for everyone. The standard of the food is very high. I would describe this as a Restaurant and pub rather than the other way around. The atmosphere is friendly and vibrant and very clean and comfortable. The staff are really friendly and work very hard to make sure your happy.Good to see The Cock back on its feet and hopefully re-establishes itself as a great Village venue

Have just had a delightful meal in this lovely old village pub. I understand it is under new management. if you are in the area just go there.Everything was simple and by that I mean simply brilliant.Lovely friendly atmosphere, attentive staff who quietly anticipate your needs before you even realise them yourself. The food was exquisite. Every mouthful left the taste buds humming and at times curious. However chef was pleased to discuss ingredients unless a trade secret. (Hay syrup is one and such a sweet experience). The only problem is I live over 350 lies away, yet not all is lost, my sister lives in the village!

We had dinner there last night and really enjoyed the whole experience, from the chef' s warm welcome to the lovely, modern yet traditional decor, the good choice of wines, the little starters and the wonderful focaccia swiftly placed on our table while we were waiting. The menu was unexpectedly interesting and imaginative, in fact we had difficulty in choosing as there were several dishes we wanted to try!! The staff was very helpful as well as enthusiastic, and we didn't have to wait long to be served by a smiling and friendly waiter. The cod with langoustine bisque was delicious and the dessert, lemon curd with fruits of the forest and home made shortbread, was incredibly creamy and just lovely. We will definitely go back there to enjoy the other dishes on their menu.

We ate here on a Saturday evening and were pleased to see we weren't alone. There were 5 other tables and the interior much improved on the last time we were here. The rather over zealous waiter/manager took our order and recommended the special - lamb belly! We plumped instead for the steak and seafood bisque, both of which were superb. My only slight annoyance was that I had to ask for salf and pepper which I think should have been left on the table rather than 'served' and then taken away. The homemade bread and pork belly appetiser were truely delicious and a nice touch. It was also nice to be offered tap water in a jug. We had to wait rather a long time for our bill which seemed to be down to the till not working and we were told they couldn't print out a receipt. All in all I think the food was superb, the staff seemed very new and not very experienced but definitely an improvement on the previous management.

I was a bit sceptical about eating here as we had been told it was under new management. I've never been more surprised by food at a local pub. It was short staffed but both the bar manager and chef worked tirelessly, we didn't have to wait and uncomfortably long time. Drinks were of usual standard but the food was fantastic! A definite French flair. When we received the menu I was genuinely surprised... Pleasantly!! From the whole soft shelled crab to the onglet of steak. And the food did not disappoint and with the nice extra touches of beef tongue appetisers and the hay marshmallows amazing! We were warmly welcomed and looked after all evening. The chef was happy to talk and is a serious perfectionist!! And the prices were very reasonable. If you are in the area book a table and Enjoy!!!!!

We just moved into this lovely Suffolk village and of course one of the first tasks is to test the village pub... friendly locals, good clean bar, reasonably priced drinks.... all good so far! New chef and new menu had just started and the chef was taking a picture of one of his latest dishes. After the pic was taken ... he kindly offered the dish to my wife and myself to sample.... beautiful fresh baked cod with langoustines and bisque! Not what I expected in the village pub!! Booked a table for 4 for the Saturday night and what a treat it was.... not an extensive menu, but certainly a well thought out menu. I would say there was a distinct "French" style to the food .... but the French style of yesteryear rather than the modern style... an exceptionally good meal (as agreed by all 4) with such delights as Pigeon Breast (stunning!!), Onglet Steak, Asparagus with Duck Tongues (try it... you'll be amazed!!). To add to the experience ... a short but good wine list at fair prices for a restaurant (Chabils "premier cru" for £18 a bottle..... ) and friendly staff.. If you want a great dining experience - then dinner here is a must! Don't go looking for Ham Egg & chips (one of my favourites, but there are plaenty of pubs offering that fare) -- just be ready for great food, well cooked.... we'll be back.

This is one of our locals pubs, we enjoy going in for a drink because we can take the dog. There is a lovely 3 mile walk around Thurlow so the pub is in the right place to call in after the walk for refreshments. Today we decided to have Sunday lunch after our walk, although the place was very busy and we hadn't booked the staff did accommodate us as a party of 4. Our starters was belly pork bites with Apple sauce as an accomplishment and smoked salmon with cucumber which was light and simple. The carvary was a choice of beef, pork, gammon and chicken and a choice of selected vegetables. The only fault we found was because the gravy sat on a different table with the condiments it wasnt very warm, which is a little disappointing because it then made the meal feel cold! We didn't have a pudding as the portions were generous. The meal was excellent value for money at £10.95 for 2 courses. Would highly recommend this pub and suggest maybe booking a table prior to going, today I think we was just lucky.

NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED :-( The Plough at Rede is one of Suffolks best kept secrets. A thatched pub with oak beams, an open fire, all tucked away in the tiny hamlet of Rede. Stunning location, fabulous atmosphere with a warm welcome and the best food for miles around. Brian and Joyce have been running the Plough for over 30 years with customers returning time and time again. Ide give 100 stars if I could.
