Having eaten in many country pubs I consider this to be positively one of the worst I have encountered. If however you like greasy American style fast food served on a piece of wooden board with ingrained dirt this may be just the place for you! The only good news in this establishment is that the portions are very generous on quantity though most definitely not on flavour nor presentation. I dined here if you will forgive the use of that word with a party of four people who all suffered from upset stomachs soon afterwards, which in my book signifies very poor hygiene standards in the kitchen. Couple that with poor service and dirty outdated surroundings and hopefully you have the picture. I’m told on good authority that they are ceasing trading in late September this year, and I for one can’t say I’m surprised!

This place shuts in a few weeks, you must try it before it closes. The brisket melts in your mouth, chicken has lovely flavour, ribs perfectly cooked and tasty. Smoked beans, gravy, coleslaw all excellent. I really can't rate this place high enough. Even the chips are spot on. Such a shame there's not much time to eat here and enjoy the awesome food. I would like to say thank you to all the staff here for our memorable dinners and great meals. All the best for the future, you deserve it!

Having read the review of someone purporting to be local I though I would double check the quality once again.I had a simple burger with fries and onion rings and it was fantastic. Beer was great and company good as well. I am not sure who the poor review was by but suspect it was from a competitors stooge. When the Coach was under planning pressure the true locals filled the village hall in protest and the customers I speak to come from all of the surrounding villages to eat here.

As a local we feel very lucky to have this pub on our doorstep. We have visited The Coach many times and are always very welcomed by the landlady/landlord who instantly make you feel at home. The staff are all really helpful and simply cannot do enough for you. The pub is very family and dog friendly and is everything you would require in a rural pub with a cosy setting and relaxed atmosphere. Side note - a great place to visit at Christmas time! The bar area is open with lots of places to sit, there is also a large pool table and fireplace. There is an option to eat in this area (great when you have a dog!) or within a separate dining area which is also very nice. I have never had a bad meal here, the food is always very well prepared and extremely tasty. Portion sizes are more than generous so would advise to turn up hungry! The sweet chilli ribs always a winner amongst guests and my personal favourite which is the no bull burger! The menu caters for a wide variety of choices - there is certainly something for everyone. Ticks all the boxes and would recommend every day of the week.

Stopped off for impromptu lunch having not visited this pub for a couple of years, despite living locally due to its bad reputation. First impression was of a sulky barman and shabby interior. Very disappointed with the food. Half hearted attempt at American theme but burgers were lack lustre and burnt as were the buns with some anaemic looking chips. Portions heaps smaller than last time and the pub looking decidedly more run down. Shabby tacky decor with threadbare dirty carpets. Some cheery customer service and well cooked but basic food could make a big difference. Should have stopped at Burger King.

Dropped in for a bite to eat on a Friday evening. I wasn't overly taken with the decor... I think there has been some sprucing up, but it appeared very hit and miss (i.e. carpets leading to the toilets very tired and stained, but the dining room looked like it had new wallpaper?). I may be overly critical, but plastic, chip shop vinegar bottles and novelty cruets just don't do it for me! This is supposed to be a pub, rather than a motorway trucker stop! That aside, the food was pretty tasty and good value. The staff were also very welcoming and attentive so, in those respects, top marks. There just needs to be more attention to the detail, to give this place a bit of polish that it definitely needs.

We stopped off for lunch whilst on route to somewhere else, given the other reviews I was expecting good things! I was sorely disappointed, the service although friendly was very slow by inexperienced staff (10 mins to sort out drinks whilst standing at the bar), the food was adequate although we did get refunded for 1 dish as it had been contaminated by hot chilli so wasn't as expected. The venue is very tired, from the gents toilets, to the entrance, to the bar area it is in need of a deep clean and a refurb. It probably looked good 10 years ago but it's 2018 now and customers expect more nowadays. Would I return if I was in the area? probably not....... I am a business owner myself so don't feel I have been unfair in my comments, let's hope the owners take this on board and do something with it!

We decided to meet here as it was a good half way meeting point for us. We arrived at 12:15 and sat at our table next to the pool table, the room was freezing cold to start! We ordered drinks, the waitress had no clue what lager they sold! We then ordered the food, 4 adult meals and 2 children’s meals, the waitress came back to our table 3 times to ask questions about our order!! Eventually the food arrived and looked ok, certainly nothing special! The little ones had a burger, and chicken, I had the 3 meats which was ok, my wife had the chilli ribs, which were incredibly salty! The others had the BBQ chicken and honey mustard Ribs. Overall the food was 3/10 as it wasn’t very hot and the so called coleslaw was inedible! At the end of our meal a waiter came over and asked how everything was and we mentioned about the ribs, he apologised, went to the Kitchen and the Chef said it was meant to be like that as he’s marinades them in Dark say sauce, my advice is use a light soy sauce and less of it! When we finished the waitress cleared one side plate and then disappeared for a long while! She cleared a few more plates and then just seemed to give up! We asked for the bill, paid and left. Overall experience was 2/10. We certainly will not be recommending nor returning to this place.

We went to The Coach last night for my sons birthday, 7 of us, 4 adults and 3 children. The staff were friendly and polite and told us our food order would take about 20 minutes. It arrived 45 minutes later. It all looked good but lacked any flavour. My burger was meaty but they had forgotten to season it in anyway. The onion rings looked lovely but they too had no seasoning, nor had the coleslaw. It was all very bland. The whole place looked very tired and in need of refurbishment. So there were three of us and a dog, we were welcomed by the friendly front of house staff, we ordered and the waiter then returned saying that what I had ordered was no longer available, due to medical issues there was nothing else on the menu that I could eat, so I had to go without while my friends had their starters delivered to the table, they had to eat that without any cutlery, serviettes! Then a rather long wait for their mains to arrive (at least 30 minutes) and once again without any condiments, napkins or cutlery. Once they had eventually managed to provide us with eating tools I sat there and watched them eat....The calamari for starter was cooked from frozen and extremely greasy, as well as the onion rings, not something that they would order again. Once my friends were halfway through their main meal the nice landlady then came to apologise and see if there was anything I could eat which turns out she had some soup but by then it was too late and they weren't far off finishing their meal. The foh staff were very nice and friendly, just feel the whole experience was let down by a number of mistakes which could be very easily rectified in the future.

Every dish was made fresh so expect a bit of a wait for the courses but when they arrive, wow! The portions are huge and mouth watering. Most of us had a bbq rib and chicken wing combo with loads of fries and salad. Brother in law had a huge stacked burger which has to be tried. The menu is large and the restaurant was happy to offer variations. Unlike some reviews we did get to have the honeycomb cheesecake and yep, its awesome. Having driven passed The Coach in numerous occasions I finally managed to persuade the wife that I really would like to try out the food here. We ended going midweek for my birthday and unbeknown to me she arranged for a couple of friends to join us. Met with very friendly staff, who remained so throughout our visit, with just the right amount of interactionMy biggest struggle with the menu was the huge amount of choice available. It isn't often that I get genuinely stuck let alone on more than two dishes!I plumped for one of the big burgers and was not disappointed. It was huge but very very tasty. I'd say the value for money was fantastic, really decent portion sizes of well cooked food. The honeycomb cheesecake was a particular highlight, it said homemade and for a change I actually think it was. Granted the decor is a bit tired and making a reservation was a drawn out process with the phone ringing and not being answered but neither will put me off going back again, and again.

Brilliant varied menu to choose from. We had a rack of ribs which were tender and highly flavoured due to their various cooking regime which our host (and owner) explained in detail to which you can only but drool! Half of them had to be taken home for a Sunday night snack.I had the burger which big, well flavoured and seasoned and still juicy. 2 lovely back rashers of bacon and a good strong blue cheese melt which may have been a Stilton?I didn't like the 'slaw' that came with it though. It was quite dry and had sultanas in it. Nothing wrong with it. Just not my taste! Maybe it's an American style? Our host was superb. Very busy but managed to chat for ages! With a lovely setting, I felt that the atmosphere would be pleasant, and as said in my previous review, I am currently searching for more pub/restaurants after my visit to The Red Lion. We ordered drinks and were taken to our table. We shared a starter of 'jalapeño poppers' (a personal favourite of ours) and I must say, I have not had better - perfect starter! We then proceeded to mains where my partner had the 'New Yorker' burger, which she thoroughly enjoyed and said was cooked to perfection. Of course, I had the x3 platter, which consisted of - 1/4 BBQ chicken, BBQ pulled pork and beef brisket, serviced with chips and The Coach's 'special' dipping gravy. Superb! The chicken with the BBQ sauce, mixed with pulled pork was unbelievable. The beef brisket and chips covered in gravy was simply genius. A true warrior would be needed to complete this task and clear the pallet (a warrior such as my friend who has a never ending appetite!) but never the less, a serious mountain of meat that is a must try if you like all of the above.

If you want American style bbq ribs, chicken, pulled pork etc this is the place. The menu also covers burgers, hotdogs, pizzas and more. The kids like the ice cream floats which come with coke, cream soda float, Dr pepper and so on.Pizzas are home made with a very thin Base. The three meat meal at 16 pounds is a huge feast of fries, tender brisket, pulled pork, large 1/4 bbq chicken, slaw and dipping gravy. I have a big appetite bit could only eat half.We never have room for dessert! The only thing I would not recommend is the home made onion rings as these are a bit greasy. A great place for the kids as there are toys to play with and cards on the table. Our teens are comfortable here.Best American style bbq in Newbury.

Booked and visited Sunday over August Bank Holiday. Very good service, food lovely, good sizes and quick service. Garlic bread needs more garlic and less salt. I thought the soft drinks were over priced £3.00 for large coke and £2.20 for soda water. Definitely recommend and would go back for burgers which were lovely.I thought the sprinkled rose petals on the table were very naff and cheap looking - why would you put them on the tables. There is a plastic cocktail glass on the table filled with a few penny sweets. Again looks naff and was grubby and sticky. I would when you issue the bill, put a few sweets on the tray with the bill. Lose the sherbet sticks on the table. (Used to be a party planner and I notice these things - sorry)The decor is a bit to be desired wallpaper on the wall and matching wallpaper on the ceiling. Guess work in progress with the new owners.Staff excellent very friendly and food very good - recommend goats cheese and red onion burger. Would visit again.

Most welcoming. Great food good value. Very friendly and helpful staff. Prompt service. I cannot find fault with anything. Staff even put candles on top of ice cream milkshake for my granddaughter who was celebrating her 10th birthday which made her feel really special! I would recommend this beautiful place most highly.

Popped in here having seen a bit of a dodgy hand written sign on the road junction - so thought we would give it a go . On arrival you can see this has just been taken over or something as things are not quite ready - for instance in the middle of the car park was a few bags of cement - very random!Anyway, we went in with an open mind and was greeted by a nice South African barman who was very friendly and soon got menus in our hands and drinks ordered, then showed us to our table. The dining room is a bit small but nevertheless quite nice. We ordered the "famous ribs" as in an American diner you have to have them and the girls ordered fish burger and chicken burger. A short wait and then this massive plate of ribs arrived...OMG they were huge.I can certainly eat and they nearly beat me (they did beat my mate the big girl!) and the girls never finished their meals either - I mean the portions were big! Shame we were so full we could not face a sweet - perhaps that's a tip for the owners - too big a portion is costing you revenue....but it was good despite this.Recommend if you are hungry and not if you are a sparrow type eater as you will waste your money.Staff all very nice and beer pretty good too :-)

We had last lunch at The Coach following recommendations from friends. The food was good quality and the portions were huge - we weren't able to finish all the meals. The desserts sounded good but none of us were able to have one. The side portion of onion rings was made of the largest onion rings I have ever seen. There was a good children's menu. The bill came to about £60 for 4 adults and a child which we thought was pretty good.

Negatives- Time- waited over an hour for starters, which arrived and there was far too much. Then another 45 minutes for mains hence why we didn't order any pudding! Atmosphere- Dining room looked liked someone's house but seemed very cramped with lots of tables and chairs crammed in. And music could have been better, it was repetitive 'in a lift' music. Food- too much, quite bland food, garnish salad looked a bit sad like from a florets packet you get from tesco, mince in the burgers wasn't seasoned just had a few mustard seeds in clumps within the burger and overpriced? Especially the New Yorker which is listed on the menu at £19.50?! Parking- not enough spaces. Positives: Drinks- good choice of drinks available. Waitresses- they are great and very pretty girls who do a very good job. Owner/landlady- I assume she was the owner but she was very chatty and was passionate about her business. Unfortunately won't be back for food again :(

Really tasty food - too much to eat. The sweet chilli ribs were delicious. Pub also serves Good Old Boy !!!! The owners came round and explained how each dish had been prepared and cooked. I can't believe I am saying this but there was actually too much food on my plate. It seemed a shame but none of us could do justice to all those chips. All American style food - ribs, steak, burgers hot dogs but also a limited amount of fish. My only suggestion for improvement is that I would have preferred a side salad the coleslaw was a waste of time. Highly recommend coming here - great value for money.

We visited on a Friday evening in early July and luckily (because it was an early dinner) they weren't too busy. We had to phone ahead as their website is still under construction and so we couldn't tell food serving times or menus online - good job reviewers gave us a good indication of menu choices. Pity they don't even have a holding page with basic information. For starters we ordered mozzarella strips and white bait, and the mixed barbecue for 2+ people - so we were advised to change table as it wouldn't fit on the table we were sitting at for 2 people! Starters were tasty and served in plastic American style baskets, and well the main course was huge! And they were right it wouldn't have fitted on the first table. A large chicken, pulled pork and ribs, with chips and coleslaw. I can't remember the last time I had to ask for a doggy bag, but we did this time for the rest of the chicken. This may have been partly down to the sweetness of the barbecue sauce that was drizzled all over each of the meat options, to our taste it became a little bit too over powering. Next time I think we'd ask if the sauce could be on the side, allowing for the fact ribs etc. are cooked in the sauce, I think based on the location/pattern of the drizzled sauce more had been added to the chicken and pulled pork. There is a small beer garden to the rear and limited parking on site, but that probably wouldn't be a problem on the local roads.

So we had been looking for a pub for lunch near to the M4 but being Father's Day it was proving difficult to find a place with spaces available. Thankfully we found The Coach and oh boy am I glad we did!! We were made very welcomed by the landlady who listed all the specials for the day in mouthwatering detail. The menu was very varied, all of the dishes sounding fabulous. The mac cheese I had was great, my wife had a rib dish as did our American friends. All good stuff. The helpings were very generous and apparently equaling portion sizes in the USA. Will certainly visit again. My only disappointment is its a bit to far to make my Friday local. 10/10

Travelling from Lichfield to Portsmouth we decided to find a pub for a quick drink & toilet break. The first pub we came to was The Coach. Hubby thought it was closed but we stopped anyway. So glad we did. The barmaid was very welcoming and asked if we'd like to eat. We decided to look at the menu. Wow, just wow. What a wonderful selection of food they had. I opted for the Calamari with a salad & OH had the Half chicken in smokey barbeque sauce. The portion sizes were almost back breaking. Fresh, well prepared with little waiting time. Very reasonably priced. On our journey home the following week we returned having made an hours detour to get there. We were not disappointed. This time i had the crab linguini whilst OH had the beef stroganoff. Thank goodness for doggy bags. My portion was so large it equated to 2 portions. Unfortunately no room for a cream soda float. This time we were served by the Romanian barman. Yet again very welcoming, helpful & service was exemplary. This family run free house is well worth a visit especially to those who want fresh locally (where possible) sourced foods cooked to a very high standard. Only downside in our opinion is it's a 3 hour drive from where we live. As OH stated if it were nearer we'd eat out every night. Cannot stress enough how good this place is as well as the staff/family who run it.

Checked out the Coach after trip advisoring the local area. This is set to be one of our repeat venues. The bbq plater for two was huge, a large rack of succulent ribs, large bbq chicken, pulled pork, two buckets of fries, rolls, dipping gravy and beans. We chose this and some extra side dishes for the four of us and have still managed to bring home half the chicken and the onion rings. There is lots else on the menu if bbq doesn't appeal, home made pizzas, a range of burgers and hotdogs. They do a range of coke and other types of soda floats, shakes etc and of course the usual pub range of alcohol.Service was relaxed and friendly. We sat in the bar area but there is also a restaurant section if you want a bit more formal meal.We will be back.

What a real hidden gem. We had lunch on a Saturday here, amazed it was not fully booked (but rather glad it wasn't). There is a lovely garden, good parking, smoking area, and it's clean and tidy throughout. The service was very good, lovely host, she made us feel most at ease and had a little chat with us when we ordered, was so helpful too. If only all staff in a restaurant were as good as her. She checked back when we were eating as well, and offered to put anything I couldn't manage in a box to take home later, which I did, delicious food to finish for dinner even when it was reheated. They do smaller sized portions and children's meals, so if you can't eat much just ask.I can't say enough good things about this food, and I can be rather picky and critical at time (so hubby says). The beans had a lovely flavour, the gravy was excellent, but the meat was the star of the show. Brisket was lean, juicy, and melted in my mouth. The chicken was good, and the pulled pork was fantastic, awesome flavour, no fat at all, just what I had hoped for and more!My only suggestion would be they serve half the chips they do, so many on the plate, even having dinner with the leftovers I had to throw half of the chips away. The 3 meat platter would be ideal for 2 to share. Wish this place was closer to home, but going back as it's worth a 50 minute drive for sure!If you like succulent tasty food, and enjoy large portions too then you really must try this restaurant. Incredible value for money and one of the best eating out experiences I've had in years. Hat's off to the chef! So glad we came here, it made the day perfect.

After a trip to Newbury Showground, decided to try this nearby place based on the American menu. We were not disappointed with the tastiest BBQ food we've had in many years. If you watch Man v Food or Diners, Drive ins and Dives and see the smoked brisket, pulled pork, hotdogs and burgers and wish they sold it in the UK, look no further.I had the Bourbon smoked beef brisket with smoky BBQ beans, dipping gravy and fries - gorgeous deep flavour, the meat just melted and the gravy with beans combo was delicious. The portion was massive with enough meat and fries to be a bona fide food challenge, so not for anyone on a diet. My wife had the three meat platter with the beef brisket, BBQ chicken and pulled pork. This had the beans, dipping gravy and a huge portion of fries. She loved it and I tasted the pulled pork - wow the best ever. The owner was friendly and kindly reminded us not to worry about leaving any food, as they will box up any leftovers to take home. My wife had dinner and breakfast sorted for the next day. Any food left was not about the taste rather the size.Owner was very attentive and chatty with customers. Staff are very accommodating, as the table next to us thought the kids would not eat BBQ, so they offered to knock up fish and chips instead. Clean and tidy venue and good selection of beers (CAMRA) approved. The pub has a small beer garden and the place can be booked for parties, etc and even a private BBQ in the garden. If they serve the food from the menu, you'll enjoy the party.Definitely on my list of pubs to visit in future.

Whilst travelling back north after a south coast excursion we searched Trip-advisor for "The best pubs close to to the A34" in the hope of finding a Pub Sunday lunch. The Coach had numerous five star ratings within the last few months so we decided to give it a go. Upon arrival we were directed to a table near the bar, all prepped for our arrival, which included play things for the two children, which indicates attention to detail. The menu was as described, heavily influenced by US dishes, but we booked on the pretense that Sunday lunch was on offer as per the website menu, but sadly on arrival it wasn't on. which is the only negative and reason for not awarding five stars. The kids ordered a margarita pizza and hot dog, my partner ordered a sweet chilli ribs and I ordered the classic burger. with BBQ wings and Mozzerella sticks on the side. We should have paid more heed to the recent reviews as the portion size was massive as described (probably didn't need the sides), as my partner could only manage a quarter of the ribs, despite being delicious. I thought the burger was very tasty with the pickle adding something different not found in many other pubs. We was impressed with the food but it did take around 40 mins to arrive, a little longer than expected but the barman did come to explain. Other minor observations, the childs pizza was an adult one, it didn't come with the sides described, and the other child's dish came with BBQ beans as opposed the requested peas. We all enjoyed the meal very much and it was very reasonably priced, the staff are welcoming and friendly. Its easy to access to and from the A34

We stumbled across this restaurant driving through on our way back to London. The service was way too good, too much, too fattening, but so delicious. We also spent time with the staff because we are from the states, and they had spent some time there. This is a family run restaurant, and you can certainly tell by the service and the food. There was nothing we ate that we didn't enjoy, but try the catfish and the chorizo mac and cheese! You will not be disappointed.

Booked here with five friends for a birthday celebration. It was recommended by two of our party, the rest of us hadn't heard of it. Booked a table about four weeks ago as they said it gets busy. Arrived to a table booked in private room with bar access, ample space on the table, with very quick bar service. Bar ladies were all fantastic, very friendly giving the whole evening a really good atmosphere.Food was unbelievably good. Very large portions (three of us opted for a three meat platter), very tasty gravy dipping sauce came with it. Fries were fresh, meat was tender and tasty. Only two of the party could manage dessert, I had a milkshake (which sadly I couldn't finish). Would highly recommend, even just for a few drinks as the atmosphere in the pub side was welcoming and friendly. Will definitely be back to sample more of the lovely menu! Thank you x

Was really expecting something special and have been wanting to come here for ages so when a friend suggested it for a night out I was really excited. Found the restaurant area very dull and a little 'cafe' like. Waited 30 mins for starters, of which mine was very nice. 2 out of the 4 of us didn't have starters so were very disappointed when we had to wait 1 1/2 hours for mains after being seated. Wasn't a massive problem for us as we were with friends so had loads to catch up on. No apologies or reasons given for wait from waitress. The main meals were not the greatest quality with the onion rings being extremely greasy and the ribs weren't great apparently. Was told the pizza was nice. I had the special of stilton and red onion Mac n cheese which was basically a dish of melted cheese with the odd bit of macaroni which i couldnt eat as way to rich. I wasn't asked by the waitress why i had left my meal. The fries that came with the meals were already (over) salted. Very odd and when I mentioned it when paying was told that McDonalds pre salt theirs. Not a good move to try and live up to McDonald's standards ! The sides of 'slaw' were £3.75 for the smallest ramekin of rather bland coleslaw I have ever had!! Didn't bother with desserts as we didn't want to wait another hour! Have to say that the landlady (i assume ) was very nice and apologised when we were paying and deducted my meal from the bill. We may try again one day as the reviews are generally good. Perhaps we just went on a bad day!
