Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.

My wife a son and I visited for sat lunch after not visiting since the lean Covid years. The cellar room where we have always previously eaten was being restored and we were lead by a delightful lady to a large very elegant upstairs dining room . We had a very pleasant aperitif while we considered the excellent choice on the alacart menu. We all chose Whitby crab fish cakes which were beautiful perfectly cooked and presented on delicious bed of scrumptious fine salad with capers and mayonnaise. This started was absolutely delicious. We all followed with confit of duck with red cabbage and dauphinois potato . I dont remember enjoying such a generous and delicious portion of confit of duck before. As we all wanted to be able to move afterwards we declined the splendid deserts on offer and finished with a piping hot espresso coffee. The meal was thoroughly gorgeous and hugely enjoyed by us all. Many thanks to the excellent team who so indulged us !

From start to finish the service and quality of the food was special. I had heard that they have recently had some issues which I find a shame for all. But there seems to be a new broom in town and they are working hard to improve everything they touch. We booked and I asked as my mum is hard of hearing and has dementia that if it was possible could we have a quiet table to allow us to hear her and allow her to be involved. Well what a fantastic afternoon the table was brilliant. Sat in a window with the room to ourselves, food very nice and as I have said service excellent. Each time we go here whether it is for a cup of tea or a meal I always enjoy the experience. Let’s keep using it. Thank you to the team.

Absolutely amazing - wanted to try this place for about 30 years and it didn’t dissapoint. Lovely warm welcome, pre dinner drinks in the bar and then food downstairs. Would say one of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had . Service was good and not rushed- definitely will return.

Finally got round to having Sunday Lunch here. Great service and delicious food. Just the right size portions. Personal preference would be not to have cauliflower cheese on a Sunday Lunch. We were persuaded by the waitress to try it, which we did it was nice but still believe it shouldn’t be part of the Sunday Lunch. Looking forward to booking again, may even extend to an overnight stay.

We have just returned from a family Sunday lunch/birthday party for 20+ guests. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Firstly the food was beautiful, a really good portion too and displayed lovely. Secondly the staff were so friendly and accommodating, no request was too much for them. We also had in our party 3 children, they were made very welcome and the children's menu was fantastic with something to suit all fussy eaters. Before today we haven't been here before but I guarantee we will be back to try the mid week menu soon!

Good Sunday lunch in very welcoming environment. This is a place for something special with an intimate bar and pleasant lounge to relax in prior to dining in a very nice dining room. Staff and service were also top class. Slightly more expensive than norm but on balance worth paying that bit extra.

I booked here for lunch with my wife, 2 young children, my parents and my wife's parents for a nice mother's day family get together. I'm afraid the experience can only be described as shambolic and the only thing preventing me giving a 1 star review was the acknowledgement by the one of the managing team that things were unacceptable and a deduction from our bill. We were asked to preorder given the occassion. After we were seated our order was confirmed and drinks order taken. Unfortunately when my mother in laws soup starter arrived it was cold and had to be sent back to be heated. The other starters were pleasant. After this, things went dramatically down hill unfortunately. 2 of our mains and 2 children mains arrived without 4 of the other mains. One of the mains that arrived early was cold and had to be sent back. The other 4 mains didn't arrive until nearly half an hour after the initial mains and it was only when we asked after around 15 minutes of waiting that we were advised our order had gone through incorrectly and there would be a delay. We then had to ask for our gravy and the side vegetables (which had been delivered with the first mains) to be reserved as they were cold by the time our meals arrived. The waitress who served us could not have cared less and I got the impression we were being a complete inconvenience to her pointing out we wanted our meals all together and not to be cold. She never apologised once or gave any explanation. we weren't asked if we wanted to place another drinks order for the duration of our stay after finishing our drinks and our table water was left empty after we finished it. No one asked if we wanted to order any other deserts apart from the ones we preordered after our mains were cleared despite me asking if we could do this when we arrived and being advised we could. The food was nice when it arrived (but nothing extraordinary) but the whole experience was pretty shambolic otherwise. Like I said before, the member of management we spoke to was reasonable and did reduce our bill which I appreciated but I would still not recommend visiting her and I will not be giving them my custom again. I understand places are busy on mothers day, but it wasn't even that busy at the time we arrived (1430) and this is not a cheap place to eat, marketing itself towards the more upmarket range which made the experience even more shocking. Just to finish things off, the drains were being serviced outside and it absolutely stunk, we even joked amongst ourselves this was a ploy to get us to leave which in the end I was glad to do. Thankfully the terrible service didn't stop us enjoying mother's day together

Food: Bland. Presentation is great but not backed up in taste. Dry chicken and hard steak and ale pie. Wine: great choices of wine but price and quality need to match better. Service: exceptional and the front of house person is a real asset - he was friendly, professional and perfect for his role. Location: ideally located on A19. Atmosphere was totally lacking. 2pm could be a “dead time” but with a few tweaks - music, lighting the fabulous real stone fire and putting the few customers in the same room…could have made the experience more enjoyable.

We have been regular visitors ever since the 80’s, not so much since there sold out to the provendence group. Went on Sunday for lunch, arrived for drinks nice room overlooking a new terrace The lunch menu had enough choice and reasonable price. We ordered with I guess the manager or supervisor, neither of the two supervisors were in any sort of uniform ,unless the uniform is jeans and un ironed teeshirts. I know the Tontine is now a brassie style , causal relaxed but there is some standards that denote a restaurant from a say McDonald’s.the waiter showed us to our table downstairs by carrying my wife’s glass in his hand ! If going to offer the service please use a tray. The restaurant floor was still covered in detritus from Saturday night, I went to loo before even was seated my starter was at my place! Water glasses on the table no offer of water. No bread service although table of 4 behind us did get some bread after a long wait. The Korean chicken was tasty. The main course roast beef , well the Beef was sliced on a machine so thin you read a newspaper thru it, I mean for £18.00 it was poor, I would swear it was sandwich beef , Yorkshire pudding and vegetable were nice. The desert of pan a cotta was ok but tinned peaches I mean. It will be a long time before we revisit can’t wait for the star to reopen for a decent Sunday lunch

Booked this restaurant for our last night staying in Yorkshire. We ordered starters of cheese soufflé and Korean fried chicken followed by fish pie and rump steak and finished of with rhubarb and almond tart and the pana cotta. Just a few issues. The soufflé hardly tasted of cheese and the caramelised peaches on the panna cotta were just tinned ones without being caramelised. The main issue was the rhubarb and almond tart. There was no rhubarb in the tart just a rhubarb gel on the side and most of the tart was rock hard and inedible. Thankfully the rest of the meal was very good and the reception deducted the price of the tart of the bill. If it hadn’t been for the tart we would have given a 5 star review.

Having passed this restaurant for a number of years an opportunity came which allowed us to visit. We weren’t disappointed when we found the dining room we were greeted by a very pleasant member of staff who showed us to our table. Tables have linen tablecloths and are well presented. The surrounding create a very comfortable and warming atmosphere. Once seated drinks were ordered and menus left. The menus are sure to have something for everyone I opted for the burger and asked for onions and had onion rings prepared specifically for me, a very nice touch. Food took about 45 minutes to arrive but it didn’t disappoint the food both in presentation and taste excelled. Pricing I believe is very reasonable. Overall a very pleasant experience and we will definitely be calling again soon. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough. Well done

The one thing that has perhaps been inherited from the previous McCoy regime is that the approach to service is laid back. We were there for Sunday lunch and whilst the food itself was OK - very very large Yorkshire pud combined with very small but tasty portion of meat ( my salmon starter is worth mentioning ) the service was rather "relaxed" - ok so perhaps Sunday lunch should be a relaxed affair - and perhaps it is policy to allow diners to wait more than 20 minutes between courses before taking the order - we ordered 2 deserts and coffee to be served at the same time as we had not got time to get coffee after desert but this request seemed too much for a kitchen that at 3.pm. was hardly rushed off its feet . We were glad to finish up and go as after nearly two hours sat next to a large empty fireplace we were really feeling the cold in a room with no heating - sorry but a BIG disappointment

Have to say we were disappointed with the meals. The cold belly pork looked lovely but cold belly pork is quite fatty and the pickled cauliflower did little to cut through. I won’t describe each course but suffice to say the food was okay but not memorable. The waiter was the best aspect of the visit, very attentive and personable. Our first visit after passing by for many years, perhaps our expectations were too high. Each course looked good but was either disappointing or okay at best when tasted. Prices were reasonable for three courses at under £25 pp. Had the food been tastier that would have been fine. With regret we will not be returning.

To be fair the service we had was fairly good where it lacked was the pricey food or lack of it two of party had the pork which was very thin and small the meals were just hot enough. We all had sweets I decided to have the trio of cheeses which was very poor don't order it three tiny pieces of cheese and three crackers not worth the money. I would say give the tontine a try but I personally think its over priced and over rated.

The Tontine has long been one of those places that is immersed in the food folklore of Teesside and north North Yorkshire. Sadly, the food on offer currently does not live up to the reputation. Maybe the food hasn't slipped so much as other places have raised their game and thus the Tontine is no longer somewhere special. The food is not bad, it is on the good to very good spectrum. But you would and do expect more. The pork and langoustine starter was nothing. Good pork, dry langoustine which is there more for show and to explain the price and a celeriac cream which was bland. The lamb main was underwhelming and while I do not want to eat huge portions, I would appreciate something that has more substance than the starters. half a lamb's kidney, a sliver of lamb roll and two small pieces of lamb. The service remains fantastic.

The menu was well thought out and authentic. The pianist played Scottish music and the wonderful piper played throughout the evening including piping in the haggis. Each table had some facts about Burns placed for each person and one brave waiter adopted a Scottish accent and read us some of Burn’s poetry. Well done all!

We arrived at the tontine having not been for several years, and for my Grandad’s 70th Birthday. We were greeted and seated immediately, and the staff were attentive throughout the evening. We had our drinks orders taken, and our food order taken around 30 minutes after arrival. We were understanding that there was another big party and a several smaller tables in the bistro/ restaurant. However, when our starters arrived, it has been almost an hour after our arrival. 2 members of our party did not receive their starters until after the rest of us (6 others) has finished our starters. One member of staff was apologetic and removed the 2 starters from the bill, which was appreciated. Our mains arrived 20 some minutes after our starters had been taken, which was great. The steak was beautiful and cooked perfectly, all others in my party were very happy with their main course. The desserts came quickly; with positive reviews from all. Generally, the staff were attentive and helpful, but given that the restaurant was not full, there seemed to be a lack of speed in the waiters, and the time we spent waiting was not acceptable. I would visit again, as the food was lovely, so long as things are approached with more speed.

We had to travel to Leeds on Sunday morning to collect some vintage car parts. It was a wet, grey and windy day and on the way back home, my husband suggested that we call in to the Cleveland Tontine for lunch. We were the first to arrive and had the pick of the tables. We opted for a table for two next to the crackling wood fire in the huge fireplace. The staff were welcoming and very polite. I went for the soup of the day (celeriac) and my husband went for the duck rillette. Both were very good. We both opted for the roast sirloin of beef which came with an enormous Yorkshire pudding fille with gravy, roast potatoes, carrot and parsnip. We were also served with cauliflower cheese and mixed greens. I don’t normally like Yorkshire pudding, but this one was amazing, light as a feather and I ate it all. The beef was cooked beautifully. I think that we both agreed that it was the best Sunday roast dinner we had ever eaten. Following a rest, we then went on to dessert, the chocolate torte was delightful and my husband enjoyed his lemon parfait, although the fennel meringue caught him by surprise. We finished off with some good coffee and a promise to ourselves to return sooner rather than later. In fact we booked to go back on New Year’s Day for lunch, but may pop in again before then.

I really wanted to write a glowing report for this restaurant which is maybe why it's taken me so long. I wanted to but sadly I can't. The food was really average and although the maitre de did his best to offer an elevated restaurant experience the banging, clattering and raised voices in the kitchen reduced us to stifled laughter. It wasn't the "award winning" meal I had expected and waited for since my early teens. It was the price of an award winning meal though. I hope it will return to it's former glory and I can try again then.

Visited on the 8th May on a spring break offer for my husbands birthday, We found all the staff lovely and professional and seemed to enjoy their work. We stayed in the Gertrude Bell room very large with a spacious bathroom up some stairs, the room was clean. We were the only people eating in the restaurant but I must say the food was amazing I understand the chef is only young clearly talented and think will go far. We enjoyed our stay and at £149 for the Spring break offer good value. The only downside the duvet cover had a tear in it and the bath plug leaked.

We used to come here for special occasions, for good food and pampering, however those days seem to be over. On our previous visit we thought it was losing its appeal, sure, you are welcomed, sat down, served food and drink - but something is missing and it doesn’t all hang together any more, it was nothing special. Eight of us were there in the evening for a family event, the food seemed to have been hurriedly prepared without attention to detail and the service was very patchy. We wish the Tontine well, but it seems to have lost its way.

Being a Mediterranean myself we love a Sunday Lunch with the family whilst enjoying a glass of wine. So I mentioned to my boyfriend to go to The Tontine as I had been eyeing it up on our way to York . Rang to book a table for noon on the same day . Should mention right now this place is spotlessly clean.

The bistro at The Tontine used to have a unique feel. It was shabby chic before the phrase was invented, and the food was always bang on. The barman was a nice guy who greeted you with a familiar friendliness, and the staff were always keen and clean. Nowadays, the Bistro resembles a Premier Inn painted in B&Q; grey. The shirts worn by the staff were equally grey. A good wash would make all the difference to the look of them, but they would still be short of relevant social and serving skills! The food is very average, towards poor. Such a shame, given its past. The sunday lunch was no better than a cheap carvery - at 3 times the price. Was really disappointed at the whole experience. Its my guess that this place will die on its feet. The best thing they could do is revert to the Tontine menu of the pre 2000's and redecorate in the old quaint style. I just cannot understand how anyone would want to change a winning formula from what it was to what it is now. It can't even compete with average pub grub.

We went for afternoon tea today for a friends birthday. Cold, windy and snowy outside we were greeted with we have roaring fires here. We were sat at our table, the waitress who served us was lovely and checked through the options we had given when ringing to book. The room we were sat in was freezing, toe numbing, coats on freezing. We asked if the heater could be put on and the lady at the desk came through and tried to put the heater on which started making strange noises. She did say she would be back with another heater, we waited. We then asked to move seats as the cold was coming unbearable. Our new table was just as cold. Over 30 minutes later our afternoon tea came. The desserts were nice. However the bread was stale and the scones weren’t burnt and hard and very crunchy. We tucked into our disappointing afternoon tea as we were all hungry in freezing temperatures. Having visited previous times we were all extremely disappointed with our food. Having spoke to the manager he did inform us that the boiler was broke before we arrived. I was surprised because when mentioning the temperature to the staff they seem to be shocked and surprised why it was cold. The manager, who was slightly rude, did take 50% off the bill. But will not be returning again. Much nicer and more reasonably price places close by for afternoon tea. Tontine is living on its old reputation.

We dined at this restaurant after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. The quality of the food was outstanding with service to match. The evening was cold outside but the log fire and the hospitality inside meant that the weather was forgotten immediately. We went for lunch on a Saturday and we were there before service time so we had a drink in the lounge and ordered our meals while we waited for the restaurant to open. We were the only diners at that time and we waited over 35 minutes for our meals despite ordering in good time. The waiter was attentive offering bread and filling up our wine glasses but no apology or reason for the delay.

Our party of four visited The Tontine on Saturday evening for dinner . We were warmly greeted and escorted to a cosy fireside table where we were served drinks and perused the menu . After placing our food orders we were taken to a lovely table which was nicely secluded from a party within the main body of the restaurant .

One of my all time favourite places from years gone bye, it’s was the place in Teesside/Cleveland to go once upon a time. Then it changed hands and fell some way short, so newly acquired by I think the provenance hotel group we thought it was time to give the bistro another shot.

We booked a table for 1330pm and arrived at 1320pm. The welcome was immediate and we were asked if we would like to have a drink in the lounge prior to being shown to our table which we said would be lovely. Very promising! We were shown to the lounge which was well decorated but cold (despite the fire being on the radiators were switched off) and lacking in atmosphere. We were quickly asked for our drinks order but then had to wait 20 mins for our drinks to arrive with no explanation as to the delay. We then had to ask to see menus and then again after another 20 mins, had to ask to order our food. You've guessed it, another 20 mins of waiting then took place before we were shown to our table now more than an hour after arrival. The restaurant was not full yet we were shown to our table in the cold conservatory right next to the fire escape. There was a draft and every other table in the conservatory was empty bar one and there were plenty of tables available in the warmer bistro area. We were offered a piece of bread each with no butter and had to wait then for our drinks order to be taken when we asked for some butter for our bread and requested a table that was away from the draft perhaps in the warmer bistro area, our waiter obliged. We were shown to our table and 30 mins later despite having placed our order 60 mins previously we were served our starters which to be fair were lovely, cheese souffle and pheasant spring rolls. 40 mins later we were then served our mains which were not what we ordered, (beef instead of lamb) over an hour and a half before. After sending these back we then had to wait for our original orders to be served. After all the wait we were disappointed to be served with under cooked lamb with uncooked sinewy fat, rock hard supposedly duck fat roast potatoes and cardboard like yorkshire puddings, one parsnip, 3 broccoli stems and a teaspoon of cauliflower cheese each and watery gravy! My wife was very disappointed. A true Yorkshire woman she hates to complain and has had the Cleveland on her list for some time but said she wished she had gone to a Toby Carvery where we she feels we would have received better, quicker service and a higher quality of food. We left more than half of our food despite having tried to find something we liked and reluctantly provided our feedback to the staff. We do not like to complain as it is embarrassing for us and the staff but because my wife is a keen reader of reviews and bases many choices of eateries through her use of trip advisor and personal recommendations she felt it unfair to not provide constructive criticism to the staff before leaving a review on here. Despite the feedback provided on site we felt the staff were unconcerned and unapologetic. They provided a discount of £22 but we then had to leave and find somewhere else for food as the mains we had received were inedible. If you have heard good things about this place and the review was not recent I would think again before booking a table. I can honestly say that the meal we almost had was the worst attempt at a Sunday lunch I have ever had, all the more concerning as the menu was of course very much reduced.Called for fish and chips on the way home, whihc to be fair would rate as five stars in comparrison!

Dined here for a family birthday celebration. The decor is homely and chic inside, I really liked that. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Limited choices for vegetarians though. It was disappointing that we were not offered the set menu which was still on offer at the time we dined. It was only brought out when the vegetarian in our party asked if there was an alternative dish to the solo vegetarian dish on the main menu. She was shown the option on the set menu, which brought to light that we could have all ordered from there, and saved some money. Obviously not what the restaurant would have wanted. However, everyone did enjoy their food, and wine choices. It was a nice place to visit for a special meal. Different to the usual restaurants we would go to.

The carpark has been greatly enlarged and not before time and further refurbishment has been going on since our last visit. I miss the quirky McCoy touches and I suppose today's regulations make this a necessity and it's certainly harder to get lost now. Service is friendly and excellent and the food very good though there could perhaps be a little more choice for our vegetarian. For both starter and main it was "take it or leave it" choice for her. The Bistro furniture has been nicely set out and the new loos easy to find and spotless. We have been coming over 30 years and have seen many changes but this regime deserves to do well and we look forward to seeing it bursting at the seams again.

The classic A19 restaurant with so much nostalgia, The Tontine has been re-launched after refurbishment, again, and everyone wants it to win so we can all enjoy it like we did in the 80s-90s.The exterior has some fabulous glass, uplighting and signage additions to the original stone building. To get to the Bistro from this impressive facade, you walk down tiny -LED-jewelled steps and into... a corridor. You go down it, and turn, and down again, and avoid the unmarked doors you're not sure if you should go in, you start to recall times you were lost in the depths of hotel car parks, and eventually you emerge, relieved, into a dining area. But there's no front desk or other greeting place, and you worry you have come out into the wrong part as you are just standing among tables of diners. Hopefully it's not long before you are rescued by staff, who hang your coat on hooks placed over wine buckets full of ice, and shown to your table. The setting is a formal, elegant bistro with beautifully set tables, and plenty of space both on tables and between. It's a calm atmosphere and definitely more for couples, or groups having a reasonably sensible night.Service was professional, impeccably polite, and prompt in taking drinks orders and then our food. There is a very good wine list and our glasses were kept topped up - also our water - in an unobtrusive way. But, when our bottle ran out, the waiter took it away without offering more drinks, so we had to chase him. There was an a la carte menu, but we ordered from the menu du jour, which is currently available on evenings Sunday to Friday until 9.30, £18.95 or £21.95 for two or three courses, and this looked to be a really good value offering. Starters of salmon and beetroot, and ham hock terrine, were lovely and served with two lots of bread, though we thought maybe the second waitress didn't know we'd already had some. Dishes were small and delicate, and arranged beautifully. Our mains got mixed reviews; chicken breast was good but the potatoes weren't dauphinoise, just sliced and layered drily ; the ribeye was very fatty with a bland sauce and this option wasn't worth the £10 supplement; the cod was absolutely perfectly cooked and a lovely dish. The portions were fine for us, but I can think of friends who'd have been left a bit peckish without a few more chips. Finally to the desserts. Rice pudding in a sweet copper pan was a creamy vanilla pleasure, but unfortunately lukewarm. The menu promised a blueberry and chocolate accompaniment, which I imagined as a sweet-rich addition to the centre of the pudding, like a posh version of when the dinner lady used to treat you to a blob of strawberry jam. In fact it was a ball of chocolate ice cream on the side (who wants ice-cream with rice pudding?!) and when we asked for the blueberries, we received a panicked look, a long delay, and finally a pot of warmed redcurrants. Not blueberries. It didn't matter, but it would have been nice if the waiting staff had just held their hands up instead of expecting us to agree with them that a red berry was a blue one. The creme brulee we ordered arrived as a trio of un-cased, pale, set substances dotted heavily with either poppy or vanilla seeds. We said that looked like panacotta, and could we have the creme brulee please. Our waitress agreed and apologised and took it away, only to return it to our table explaining that this was Chef's twist on a creme brulee. We tried to work out how this could be done to produce a firm set mass turned out - wouldn't the custard collapse? If it's not burned hard on top isn't it just 'creme'? Then we agreed again it was after all, panacotta. Again, this wouldn't have been the end of the world, but the staff wouldn't admit it was panacotta , and also it tasted really awful. We all tried it, and it really was bad. Our waitress was very professional and helpful about this and it was taken off the bill, so it was chef who left us baffled.I know at least some agree with me that an important test of any restaurant is the standard of the facilities. To get to the lavatory you have to return , Alice-like, through the corridors and corners and blank doors, after your delicious Sauvignon, but you are rewarded for your efforts with a spotless, fresh, neat Ladies. I loved the milky green tiles, waterfall taps, Dyson drier and L'Occitane soaps. Thoughtful and high quality. The surroundings are lovely- the owner has invested and with good taste. Service is excellent too - just need the kitchen to be consistent, and send out what it says on the menu. This bistro could be amazing and I so hope these issues are ironed out, so we can all love the Tontine once more.

Was not impressed only 1 chicken available at 6.30. When meal arrived rib eye steak £10 extra was grisley and very chewy. No pasta on child's menu. Ordered creme brule for dessert and got pannacota chips not good and oil wanted changing. Complained to restaurant manager asked for chips with the 1 chicken dish available and wanted to charge extra. On paying bill they deducted 1 chips and 1 coffee. Not impressed with menu why partridge legs instead of breast. Decor good but food poor. All appearance but failed on good food despite assurance that meat was local and.matured and why poach chips before cooking try 2 or 3 times cooked chips to get crispy finish. Would not recommend.

Came a few weeks ago for dinner with my partner. Lovely atmosphere, like a French bistro. All dark and cosy. We didn't have a starter. The main meal was the steak meal for two. Cooked extactly right. Partner had the cheeseboard, but couldn't resist sharing my beautiful soufflé, which was my highlight. My partner loved the steak! A little expensive hence four stars, but overall worth every penny. Great place for a cosy romantic night out.

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))
