The Churchillian in Portsmouth

I come here at least once a week as the food is amazing, especially on a Sunday. Steve, was an amazing host, very polite and professional and Jack our server was brilliant, professional, funny and great with the kids. Extra mention for Ben and his team in the kitchen for sending out an amazing roast as usual. Definitely be back soon.

A tasty but appalling Sunday roast. For starters (although they offer unlimited) were the roast potatoes, they looked and tasted like they barely even looked at the oven let alone roasted in one. The cauliflower cheese was dry, bland and shown to a slice of mozzarella before being served (for £2.50 as a side dish) save your money and don't bother. The trio of meat was embarrassing, one slice of pork (dry and tasteless) one tiny slice of beef which looked like the offcut from the end of the joint & a mouthful of turkey which again was pitiful. To accompany the dish I received one tenderstem broccoli & half a slice of carrot. The yorkshire pudding was standard, the gravy was to die for and the mash potato was buttery & delicious. I would 100% not recommend nor return. The staff were friendly & helpful but that's about it. Save your money & go else where.

Had really good service from the staff here today. Especially helpfull was Annette. All the staff checked the meal was OK.

Went to the Churchillian pub after my mums funeral. Food was lovely. No complaints from any of the family. I can recommend the special sticky toffee pudding with a small bottle of Baileys in. Gives a kick just where I needed it. Thank you to the waitress Lauren who was attentive to our table and provided excellent service. Thank you x

Booked buffet and bar upstairs for a wake of about 100. The food was brilliant and had 2 ladies on bar. Everything worked well and organised. Thank you so much Churchillian team.

Very pleased with the quality and quantity of the Sunday lunches. Did not feel able to take up the offer of extra Yorkshire puddings and potatoes. Worth making a reservation, became very busy. Very pleasant staff. The view of Portsmouth etc is incredible from the 120m cliff.

Dreadful meal. No vegetables. Cold yorkshire puddings . No crackling for the pork. Location doesnt compensate. The view doesnt make up for quality

Had a lovely meal and drinks here in a Saturday evening. Sat with a great view of Portsmouth and very good service. The ribeye steak was delicious perfectly cooked and would recommend it. So was the chocolate brownie. Alex behind bar was welcoming and attentive will be going again!

We hired the upstairs function room for a Wake. The booking process was simple. Regular emails with Chris who sorted out our wishes. On the day everything was ideal. Due to the amount of guests we had the bar was a little busy to start with but that soon smoothed out. We used the balcony and there were toilet facilities upstairs. Food arrived as planned and feedback from everyone was it tasted lovely. Jay and team did an excellent job. Would use the venue again maybe for a more jolly family gathering.

It was a cold & rainy night... Inside the Churchillian it was lovingly and warm with a friendly welcoming atmosphere Our table of eight enjoyed ourselves and we were delighted with the service - the food came quickly, was very good and we felt was definitely quite a bit better than we expected from a pub Thank you Jay & the chefs

After several gin and slimline tonics had been drunk between me and my friend, we noticed that all the slimline tonics were out of date. We pointed this out to the bar staff and also told them we could see several more in their cabinet were out of date too. Apparently they will mention it to the manager tomorrow. They didn't seemed bothered as ' they were only a month out of date' Wonder what else is out if date which they are selling.

Food fabulous, services outstanding, atmosphere great, very friendly and bar staff very helpful. Would recommend oh and it is reasonably priced.

Such a nice experience my waitress Gracie made me feel very welcome and comfortable with my allergies reassuring me the food is amazing she recommended me to try the chicken goujons

With great expectation we sat down, chose a starter and main and ordered at the bar as you do. In nearly 50 years of going out to eat I have never had my main served at the same time as my starter well until yesterday. So I got my starter and my partner got her main? she asked where hers was and the waitress said , I don,t know worrying at best. She duly took back the main and brought out the starter which was ok. After we ate our starters our mains came out which were definately the ones cooked earlier as both were shocking. I had the Hunters Chicken all of the BBQ sauce has gone dry the cheeses was one mass and the Chicken dry the chips were soggy and cold and the peas were dry. My partners fish was cold and the batter fell apart and her chips and peas were also a lot to be desired. We did get the offer of a free pudding but I asked for a full refund on the mains which I did get. So will no be going back as this is the second occasion the food has been average at best.

Came here with my husband and kids last Wednesday was such a lovely experience we had a couple of drinks and sides which was unreal but my waitress Gracie gave us the most amazing experience making are dog feel apart off this, showing us there new dog menu bring the dog water and trests

The food was good and had a great selection on the menu, but the service was even better, our waitress Gracie was very polite and made us feel very welcome.

Great spot to stop on a dog walk! They even had a full doggy menu - the lolly pop given to us by our lovely waitress April was a favourite!

We had a great family meal at the Churchillian. The food was great and very good value, especially the prices of kids meals. The staff were all friendly and a special thank you to April, who was very attentive and pleasant.

We have just celebrated a Wake at The Churchillian and it was wonderful. A huge thank you to April and Jay who made sure everything went smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. That really helped. The food was delicious and such a range to suit everyone's taste. A lovely venue with views. Highly recommended.

I ate here all the time before covid so stupidly expected the food would be the same but it wasn't. Burger and chips takeaway £14 plus and it wasn't even hot, lukewarm. Rang spoke to Manager he apologised said he would talk to the kitchen staff I hope he does as the quality presentation and taste was awful.

Came here with my girlfriend for a meal and drinks. Everything was perfect. Lovely bar staff, very helpful and welcoming. Will defiantly be coming again. The food was cooked perfectly, served nice and hot. Drinks where always nice and cold, glasses throughly cleaned. The whole team would always go out of their way to help whenever needed

came in for a quick drink and felt so safe and the atmosphere was amazing I ended up stopping in for a snack too. the Cheesy mushroom bruschetta was to die for! so cheesy and tasted extremely fresh.

Amazing view and even better staff they are all so friendly and welcoming didn't have a problem with anything. Child and dog friendly would definitely recommend to any kind of family looking to go out for a nice meal.

Friendly bar staff and a great new menu. On more than one occasion, I have had both the chicken and beef burgers and they were both very tasty!

The food was really good and the service was good we felt safe as all the Covid measures were all in place and the staff gave really good table service I can't wait to go back again and I would highly recommend to others.

Visited for an early dinner with my partner and three children. The menu catered for all of us and the kids especially enjoyed their sundae desserts! (Build your own with smarties, strawberries and marshmallows). The staff were well organised and working hard in some windy conditions. They made us all feel welcome and were also very attentive and helpful. The refurb to the outside area is beautiful giving you stunning views from not only the front of the pub but also the rear. Will definitely be returning and would recommend whole heartedly.

Visited for a Sunday lunch. The pub is so beautiful, the garden is very well decorated and organized. The staff was very helpful and attentive. The food was excellent, we had the roast dinner and it couldn't be better. And of course the view is stunning.

Visited on a Friday evening and as with all table reservations on a Friday and Saturday we paid a £5 deposit per head. Food was standard but pricey considering quality. The service is where it went all downhill. We were shown to our table with no menus and it was not until 10 minutes we realised there’s a QR code to scan for ordering food and drinks (thanks for the heads up). That being said, we realised after ordering that some tables had menus.Food came out quite quick within 20 minutes but unfortunately so did the drinks which came out literally seconds before the food. How long does it take to pour a pint and glass of wine?when we asked the waitress how we would get the deposit back as we ordered through the app she said she was not sure and would speak to the manger. 15minutes went by and we heard nothing. I walked up to the bar and asked again and I was told to go back to my table and someone would come see me. After having to get up two more times eventually we came to dissatisfying conclusion. We were told to ring the booking company to get the deposits back. This whole deposit issue ruined whole night and someone should of mentioned something. We overheard another two tables ask the same question and the establishment offered them drinks to cover the deposit which is broader line robbery! Makes you think if this was purposely done to get more money out their customers. Safe to say I won’t be going back there.

Why ask customers to pre-order drinks when they book a table if you then expect them to wait 50 minutes to provide them! How long does it take to open a bottle of prosecco and serve it to the table along with 2 glasses?The floor staff were apologetic and tried to resolve the issue, but they were let down by the manager who appeared to be running the bar.Not a good experience and not sure I will be returning for a long time.

My favourite place to get away from it all and they go and change hands and it has gu one downhill nice and fresh decor just poor food.......... Get the old people back

We have always visit this lovely place and always been pleased with the food, it’s always had a great reputation for great food and great drinks, we will be going again once we see them reopen Great staff great food

So at first we were greeted at the door by someone who mumbled and could barely understand what he said, due to his mask. He first told us we couldn't sit inside because we weren't from the same house hold but if he had actually listened to us he would've heard we live in the same uni house. then it just goes even more down hill to be honest, we ordered some drinks to be told we weren't aloud to have our drinks until we had ordered food, this baffled us as we had told you we were ordering food but you still said no the drinks straight away. Then we get on to ordering the food, first of all how do you not know what you have on your menu, everything that we wanted you told us, you didn't have, maybe if you had changed your menu to the stuff you actually have on ur menu and make it a bit reduced you wouldn't have this issue again. we ended up settling for 2 of your classic combos, which to be honest were dreadful, the chicken wings were dry, the sausages were flavourless and the onion rings and chips were over cooked. then to top it off both of the staff that were working seemed to love to stare at us for the entirety of the meal which made us all very uncomfortable. all in all awful experience wont be going back anytime soon, and will never recommend to anyone.

I went for a weekday lunch with some friends. After suggestions the venue Truly disappointed from the minute I walked through the door. No explanation of there new covid measures. Meaning I had to ask how we place orders now. Haven eating in her before I want to belive this was just a very off day for every staff member. However I found the man in charge very rude and blunt and not inttessted at all in serving us. I made a complaint to the lovely waitress but it took the manager atlesst 20 minutes to come over to me to address my complaint. And this was once I had called him over again. The food qas horrible ..not fresh at all quiet stale! Chips well over cooked. And burger buns were crispy and hard. I got an apology and was told it wasn't my fault there just understaffed. It took half an hour for my bill.to be given to me I dont thjnk ill return agter this! The only saving grace was the lady waitress who served us!

Spent Saturday night with some friends. Ordered halloumi fries - £5. There were 3.5 dried up ‘fries’ and a tiny pot of sauce. I complained. They went back. They came out - with 4 fries. They were truly awful. We had to beg to be served for drinks. (We spent £230 in all). We were told to be quiet (we couldn’t hear each other speak as there’s nothing on the walls to cancel any noise, so we’re trying to be heard. We even asked to move because of the noise but were told no). This is my third and final time giving The Churchillian a chance. It lacks ambience. Appalling service. Terrible food. No thanks, never again.

Sinceramente, nunca ha sido mi pub favorito a pesar de la ubicación. Quería pasar a tomar una copa después de pasear a los perros. Más regulaciones de las que podría manejar. Lugar vacío, mucho personal parado, sin papel higiénico, comida muy lenta y la hamburguesa para niños de mala calidad era pequeña, quemada en un panecillo enorme. Te decepcionará, ni siquiera la vista puede salvar este lugar.

Buena comida y excelente servicio. Una comida muy agradable en una excelente ubicación aquí hace un par de noches. El personal fue muy servicial y el servicio atento. La calidad y presentación de la comida fue muy buena y ambos podemos recomendar el pastel de bistec y cerveza con tarta de queso de postre. Definitivamente regresaremos pronto.

Revisé el pub hace dos años y le di 2 de 5. Ahora le he dado un 3. Cómo desearía que la magnífica vista se combinara con la atención al detalle: estaba más impresionado que en mi visita anterior, pero aún así decepcionado. Buena selección de cervezas, y el menú ligeramente reducido tenía una buena variedad de comida de pub (incluidas opciones veganas). You feel completely safe without it being a bore or over the top. The staff are very welcoming and go the extra mile. We just had some drinks but the food looked really good and I overheard some very good comments.

Hoy me detuve para un almuerzo rápido y solo quería darte las gracias. Disfrutamos de nuestras cervezas y hamburguesas en el jardín mirando las vistas. Recibimos un excelente servicio de todo el equipo y realmente podemos ver que se toma en serio los procedimientos de Covid 19, a diferencia de algunos lugares que he visto. Nuestra comida era fabulosa también definitivamente lo recomiendo! ! Volveremos : )

Bebidas muy caras. Vino grande y botella de cerveza sin alcohol. 12. 95. no creo que se apresure a regresar.

Visité el Churchillian recientemente y encontré las bebidas muy caras, una pinta de sidra y un vaso grande de blanco de la casa 11. 45. Probablemente el pub más caro de la zona. El pub necesita reformas. No volveré a molestar.

Nuestra primera visita al Churchillian, una experiencia de pub deliciosamente refrescante. La comida se sirvió en platos del tamaño adecuado de comida de pub, no en platos laterales que ahora parecen estar de moda, y se sirvió en la mesa dentro de los 25 minutos de haberla pedido, perfectamente aceptable.Todos en el grupo disfrutaron mucho de sus elecciones y esperamos volver a visitarlo.Ah, y muy feliz de ver que Churchillian admite perros, esto fue muy apreciado por mis hijos que disfrutaron conociendo a sus nuevos amigos de cuatro patas.

There is something fundamentally wrong with this pub/restaurant. It's hard to actually pinpoint the problems, but it lacks something? For location and views alone, this place should get 5*, but slow service, expensive drinks, dogs sprawling around the tables, screaming children and uninterested patent/s...mean that the magic is quickly rubbed away.Decent menu, friendly, if slightly frazzled staff, free WiFi, free car parking both front and back...plenty of seating both inside and out, with a fantastic upper floor terrace (which appears to be shut at the moment)?Could be and should be a showstopper of a venue, but for the problems raised above. If you fall into one of the demographic, then you'll probably enjoy it.Recommended...if you like dogs and children.

Food was pretty awful and very small portions, also streaming loud music at lunch time/afternoon in a country pub??! wasn't the best. Wouldn't visit again.

Went for a family catch up. i ordered the lamb shank as i was really hungry and was wanting a really hearty meal as it came with mash potatoes and vegetables. when it arrived i was pretty disappointed.... the lamb shank was the smallest lamb shank i had ever been served before but was up for the same price as what i would normally pay for a lamb shank and the 'vegetables' were no going to lie two broccoli stalks.......i hardly call that a side of vegetables being 2 broccoli stalks..... but it was tasty so will give the chef that. so obviously as we were all still hungry we ordered desert and then my brother found a piece of plastic in his eaton mess sundae.......fair to say we will find somewhere else with better food service

Ok, so we came a few months back and i wish i'd written a review then (think it was November time but not sure), because we had the roast back then and it was lovely - good homemade roasties, really nice, quality beef, lots of nice veggies and bottomless gravy and yorkie puds. We remembered enjoying it so suggested meeting a few friends this weekend but unfortunately the roasts were not as good, roasties seemed to be those frozen ones from a bag (sorry if i'm wrong) and the veg was a bit dull - white cabbage, cauliflower (lacking in cheese sauce) and carrot, no greens served. What i will say is that the beef was very tasty.Attentive staff and nice views so will probably try again but did leave feeling a bit disappointed...... If we want a drink, snack and a view over Portsmouth in the future it wouldn't put us off, just not sure about the roasts now..

Sunday lunch? Yes please says Mrs R. Let’s give The Churchillian a go. Booked o table on line, easily done. Requested a table by the window which we duly had. Both ordered the Roast Beef. Ordered and delivered almost instantaneously. Hot and tasty with the beef melting in the mouth. Great meal, reasonable price with a great view over the Solent. We will return.

My wife and I climbed the hill from Cosham late one winters afternoon to watch the sunset. i took about half an hour. The view was spectacular as the sun set it through red unto the cloud sheet forming to the south of Portsmouth over the Isle of White and Solent. after we went inside for and evening meal. Unfortunately the real ales were all off. I suppose it was because it was after a busy weekend Monday. I had Ale pie my wife had scampi and chips, which she says was very good. My pie was good with meat in it .( which is not always the case with pub pies) The pie was on top of a very loose cream mash potato, along side of a very runny pushy peas. All was at expected price for a pub on a hill.Not a thumbs up sorry Churchillian.

Went for lunch with my mum. Several things had run out so I didn't have steak and choose a lasagna..Most of the menu is fried/ basic food. My mums fish and chips were fine. However the lasagna was a different story. The first one had a pool of oil on the top and was cold in the middle so I sent it back...the replacement had obviously been nuked in the microwave and was so hot that the meat had baked solid on the edges and the top which was just cheese was a molten mess...the garlic flat breads were over crisp and had no garlic taste...needless to say I didn't eat it either...all in all was very poor and won't be returning...

Wow took my wife , daughter and her partner with a themed gatsby night , Everyone dressed up. The four course meal was well worth the money and really tasty . We will be back next year .

Not a good experience. Quality of food was poor. Empty pub but still took too long for a soup and sandwich. When the soup came out the bread was hard, half toasted and butter melted as must have been sitting under hot lamps .. it was replaced but why send out in the first place. Staff were friendly

Worst place ever eaten in staff allowed to be drunk and on drugs while working and nothing ever said . Management non existent and don’t seem to care by all accounts

Lunch here, after a long walk in the area. Quite busy - several family/group parties - but after ordering at the bar, service was swift. We wanted only light bites, so the advice to avoid a few dishes ('rather generous portions') was welcome. Our selection of starters were all tasty, especially the scampi, in very crispy batter. A window table - snowflake decorations still stuck on the glass - offered a sweeping view of the city and Solent below. The bill, including beer and a glass of wine, was around £23.

Awful from start to finish served by bartender who stank of drink and was incoherent and coudent sting a sentence together not good

Awful ran by Portuguese who have no clue what they are doing . Way expensive for what it is and the area manager sleeps in the car park apparently sums it up

Today, we enjoyed a first-class meal and great service. We had a selection of starters with plenty to chose from in terms of main courses to suit all palettes. We were made to feel welcome, not rushed with nothing too much trouble. Thank you to all the staff who made this a memorable time.

There were over 20 of us in the group and we were given the first floor area which meant the children had plenty of room to play and before and after the meal. The sun shone, the room was warm and the food, all 3 courses, was served in a very efficient way. Very tasty and no complaints. Well done to all the staff.

Had never visited this place, we live locally and our friends like the place, after our experience I can only wonder why?.The menu is very well.. Average,My husband and did not fancy any of the food on it, so we just had steak and then a dessert. The food was ok,the service was ok.. nothing special. The bar area looks like it could do with an update..The eating area..(will not call it a restaurant)was ok needs also an update. The toilets were truly terrible, The ladies was very dirty dank and smelly,All the toilet pans had skid marks on them and not a loo roll in sight. My husband confirmed the Gents was on a par. Did not enjoy our visit and will not return,We prefer fine dining in pleasant surroundings and this please was neither.

Fui a una fiesta privada arriba. La habitación era hermosa. Vistas increíbles. El único inconveniente fue que no había acceso para discapacitados. mi papá no tiene mucho tiempo de vida y estaba decidido a ir con sus hijos en el 50º. Tuvimos que cargarlo en su silla de ruedas.

So much improved from last year, hot tasty food, served quickly with a smile. Very enjoyable drinks and meal at reasonable price. Hope these people stay and maintain this standard.

Great place up on the hill. Nice pub grub with loads of tables overlooking the amazing view of the whole of Portsmouth. Sunday lunch roast beef is great!

Después de conducir durante una hora para tratar de encontrar un lugar para comer en el área, alguien en el pub recomendó el Churchillian en el camino. Era un sábado por la noche muy húmedo y no éramos demasiado optimistas. Sin embargo, a la llegada nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos y nos llevaron a una mesa para 4, que tenía una hermosa vista de Portsmouth. Todos optamos por el bistec cocinado en diferentes grados y cuando se sirvió fue muy agradable y preparado según lo solicitado por cada uno de nosotros. Los precios eran razonables y el ambiente era agradable con una serie de pequeños grupos comiendo. En general, la experiencia fue muy buena y tuvimos una velada agradable allí.

Pensé que probaríamos este pub ya que había sido renovado un par de años antes. Está en un lugar excelente, pero la comida y los precios de los alimentos dejan mucho que desear. Completamente caro para un menú estándar pantano. ¡No volveremos a menos que veamos una señal que indique ‘bajo nueva administración! ! "Sin embargo, el personal es bastante amable.

Following a bike ride we had a table booked here being local to where we finished at Fort Nelson. A gloriously sunny Sunday with a fair number sitting outside when we arrived and parked up.

Situated on the Portsdown Hills above Portsmouth this is a good pub/Restaurant. Good food and extensive drinks bar. Outdoor or indoor seating. Brilliant views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Had the fish and chips plus extra onion rings couldn’t fault the meal staff were friendly and the view of Portsmouth is one off the best

I hired upstairs off the Churchillian for my dads wake . The staff were great and couldn’t of been more helpful. Arranged buffet food which everyone commented on as was extremely good.

I had heard bad reviews of the food, but it was a convenient place to meet my cousins that day. We sat outside, even though it was cloudy and windy. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by what we ate. We all chose the pie, mash and vegetables which was very tasty. Can't comment on the rest of the menu.

My Dad took me here many times many years ago, so I thought I would take my daughters here just for the ambience,as being a pompy girl, but moved away a long time ago.. On entering the bar lady was so friendly and helpful she made us so welcome.. We ordered food and it was served by a nice happy chap, food was fresh and lots of it. We payed the bill and took the wine up to the terrace over looking my home town and watched the boy racers fly past. We will be back..

Being there so many time and always want to come back! Really good spot int he summer as the view is amazing, the beer is always cold! The Portuguese guy was so friendly and supportive - I don`t know his name, please share this good feedback with him - he is a real asset to this place! Food is a bit expensive though!

Booked online the evening before, saves hassle.

I have lived in Portsmouth 25 years then moved 16 mile away about 8 years ago. We occasionally visit the Churchillian a couple of times a year for their good food as well as great selection. Although I know it is a chain owned pub they have always seem to have a wide ranging menu, always a great variety, never failed on all the years we have been. Catch it on a sunny day and you also get the pleasure of fantastic views of the Solent as well.

Terrible food and poor compliant handling. We had 3 very sad looking limp jacket potatoes with a bit of salad on the side. We complained to the waitress, and all we were offered was another bowl of the same sad looking salad. We were clearly still not happy. A complaint is an opportunity...they didn’t get it. I will not be returning and will not be recommending it. Such a shame for a beautiful location which once had such a great reputation for food.

Came in today to have lunch and were pleasantly surprised . The lunch deal was really good value . My main was really nice but my sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I have ever had ( and I have had a lot through the years ). The staff are lovely . Would def recommend .

The Sunday Lunch was very good... plenty of veg and really tender beef... good selection of sweets ... had one of the brownies... very good

Called in for a drink quick friendly staff good selection of beers and spirits. Sat outside fantastic views over Portsmouth, some of the garden furniture requires a little maintenance. But for the views alone worth a visit.

I have used this pub on many occasions and been happy with the food, unfortunately on my last visit to the pub the salad look like it had been out for two days, my sandwich had a small amount of filling just in the middle of the sandwich, and the sausages looked like it had been on the barbecue for a few hours then reheated and was black on one .

Went here for lunch with a friend. Food was acceptable, but getting served at the bar took so long due to people being allowed to cut in that we gave up on the rest of the afternoon.

The staff gave us a warm welcome and the food was typically English fair. Roast dinners were the choice plenty and tasty just the job before boarding the ferry to France from Portsmouth. Six friends were riding our motorcycles around Spain and France and unfortunately one of my foot pegs became broken. Paul the manager to the rescue !! He found two blocks of wood sawed then to the right dimensions and we gaffer taped them to the pegs. Genius. I really don’t know what we would have done without him over and above I’d say Laura was the happiest waitress I’ve ever met. I wish she worked for me well done we will be back

We enjoyed a birthday gathering at the Churchillian, great night but made so much better for the addition of their Magician 'Askham' very talented!! I will be booking him for my own party.

We held a wake at the Churchillian and were very grateful for the sensitive and professional service we received. The staff took the time to check that everything was ok and were friendly and caring. The food was delivered in very good time and was all hot and delicious. Being able to take dogs in was one of the key factors in choosing this venue. The views are simply stunning and a perfect place for reflection. Thank you to all who looked after us.
