Very trendy establishment and notable for having lucrative trending artists play in their outdoor garden. The building has a very Bristol feel, with multiple levels of seating in a confined area it has a real old timey pub vibe. Prices are fairly expensive but is somewhat expected in the centre of town.

I visited Bristol with some friends and The Christmas Steps was recommended to us. Nice choice of food - although I was disappointed there was no torte left by the time I came to order dessert. Staff friendly, service quick and efficient. Nice choice of wines as well. I may not get back to Bristol again but would recommend this place. In a quaint spot as well. Quite small in a way but that is not a bad thing.

There was not a lot going on when we went to the Christmas steps. Maybe my opinion is biased by the fact I am not as mobile as I once was. In general, it was just a big staircase. Maybe at sometimes of the year, it is decorated, but even the few stores etc, we’re closed.

Horrible food and service. We waited 45 minutes for our Sunday roast only for it to arrive overcooked. Eating the beef was like chewing on cardboard. When we requested for our 2 portions of beef to be replaced, they only brought 1. The waiter then told us “it’s free beef!” Expecting us to be grateful for serving us cardboard with gravy. I wouldn’t serve this to my dog.

We went for a Sunday roast and the food was outstanding - some of the best roast potatoes I’ve had for a long time, and the meat was perfectly tender. The side vegetables tasted wonderful too. Sadly, the service was disappointing. We were left feeling like they would have rather not been serving us - even when they did come and check in on us, it was like they didn’t actually want to. And one of our mains arrived more than 10 minutes after everyone else’s. Finally to top it all off, the bill at the end was wrong and we had to ask for an item to be removed. If the service had been better this would have been a perfect review.

Beware they won't keep you a table! Booked a table using their online portal for a Sunday Roast on 3rd March for a group who, including myself, would have been dining here for the first time. Turned up to find that, despite getting confirmation on the web window and having put a payment in as a deposit for their no-show policy, they had not recorded or kept my booking, or ever sent a confirmation email. I was disappointed to find the restaurant unsympathetic to the problem they’d caused for my group and offered no resolution to this, with little prospect of getting a walk in Sunday Roast elsewhere. Incidentally they explained we had not been the first to arrive that Sunday with the same complaint and were therefore clearly aware there had been an issue which they made no effort to rectify. Have the cheek to pre-emptively charge me for a now show, yet there’s no means by which I can charge for a ‘no-show’ of my confirmed booked table?

Had a table for 8 booked last night (Saturday). No mention on the menus , so confused if it was table service or order at the bar. While deciding, we were told at least 50% of the menu was unavailable. Ordering at the bar doesn't really work for large groups, especially when its 3 deep at the bar. All the tables seen to have been pre booked for food, so lots of 'drinkers' just standing everywhere. Booked the table for 7.30, food didn't turn up until nearly 9. We were offered a round of drinks as an apology. The food was delicious when it did arrive. The pub is on 2 levels so it would be very easy to have one level for table service for food and one level unreserved for drinkers only. Won't be rushing to return.

Visited this “pub” with two male friends for a pint a few days ago. Unimpressed. There were a group of students sat upstairs on their laptops, they did not appear to be drinkers. We had to return a pint of Fortitude as it was undrinkable. The keg beer was pricey at £6.80 a pint. We also had to ask for the pint of bitter to be topped up as the glass wasn’t full, just a minor grumble.. why was the bitter served in old style glasses with handles 🤔. They also do not accept cash only card payments. We shan’t be back.

Nice pub that I go to quite regularly. I would give it 5 stars, but they have this silly system where absolutely all of their tables can be reserved online. So, there's never anywhere to sit. You shouldn't allow tables to be reserved, unless they've also pre-ordered food. It's crazy to walk into a pub, and literally every table has a little sign on it saying "reserved"

Usually really pleased with this place but had Sunday roast today. Reservation was 5.45pm. After a lovely main course we asked to order desert and we were told the kitchen closed at 6pm. Why have a reservation time if you can’t offer a full service?! At least tell the customer when they sit down that the kitchen closes before you finish your meal. Crazy! We would have stayed late in to the night for a few drinks but were so annoyed at the stupidity we just paid the bill and went home. And to make things worse we had to explain why not telling us when we sat down was a problem in order to receive a vague apology. Obviously there would be an expectation that we can order desert after a main which the staff did not understand.

Booked a table of 13 for Christmas dinner way back in October so was pretty shocked to discover my tables had been split up and shoved right next to the front door in the pub (which I was not told about before hand). Appreciate it’s a busy time of year but we had no table service whatsoever and had to order all our drinks at a heaving bar! It was so busy we had general bar goers perching on the end of our table while we ate. Had to ask twice for our food to arrive and when it did the mains were cold. Had to get desserts to go as they took too long. So disappointed as had heard such good things about this place. When you’re a table that’s bringing in >£500 not really good enough.

First impressions were pretty good having been here many years ago. A nice quirky pub with various areas and plenty of outside space dotted around. The blonde lady behind the bar was very friendly and there was quite a good selection of beers on keg and cask plus ciders of course. It was a cool evening despite it being August so the open door didn’t help the tables nearby as it became necessary to wear coats indoors. The downside was the food. Having ordered sausage and mash with seasonal veg it came along and I thought it was the child’s portion. The definition of seasonal veg was a few shreds of cabbage! It was ok at best and at £14.95 really poor value for money. Another option was the cottage pie at nearly £18 which we avoided, but some came along to people say nearby and again the portions were minuscule. The price vs expectation point was way off kilter here for the food. All in all I liked the pub and most of the staff were friendly so I’d feel bad rating it below 3/5. However the food situation is best avoided and was a real disappointment. I’ve never seen the like even back in the big smoke!
