Celebrated my Birthday with friends at The Christmas Steps. They were able to accommodate a table for 11 people once i emailed despite this not being able to book online. The pub itself is very charming and cosy, we were sat right by a fire. The food was delicious and came out very quickly, service was equally as good. Not my first or last visit im sure.

Start with the positive things about the pub lovely characterful building and great beers and music. Negatives are the staff seemed pretentious, dismissive, everything was a burden, served us drinks but never mentioned there was no food available until after we sat down and won't accept cash which is still legal tender and maybe we would of gave them a tip.

Food has really gone down while the price went up. Have been a long time fan but went on Sunday for a roast and it was bad. Burnt yorkshires, over cooked potatoes that were mostly beyond saving, one meagre bit of lamb on the both lamb plates. Sticky toffee pudding got sent back for being burnt (last time my boyfriend sent anything back for fear of being impolite was probably 8 years ago…) veg and gravy tasted nice. The service is always so friendly but it’s a busy packed pub with 1 bartender and maybe 1/2 wait staff who are doing everything - they’re rushed off their feet so the service is slow. Sad really wouldn’t recommend after this experience. Spoke with friends and they had similar experience the previous week.

If you’re feeling festive, merry, or even just vaguely amused by the word “Christmas,” then the Christmas Steps pub in Bristol is your natural December habitat. Nestled at the bottom of the ancient, winding steps from which it takes its name, this pub is the very embodiment of yuletide charm. It’s like stepping into a Christmas card, but with better booze and fewer smug robins. The pub itself? Gorgeous. Think old-world Bristol—heavy beams, exposed brick, and a vibe so effortlessly cool it probably owns a record player. Yet it’s not pretentious; this is Bristol chic at its best. The sort of place where the craft beer crowd rubs shoulders with the mulled wine brigade, and nobody looks at you funny for ordering a Guinness. And trust me, you’ll want one—it’s poured so perfectly you’ll wonder why they don’t put this place on postcards. What really sets the Christmas Steps apart, though, is the atmosphere. This isn’t just a pub; it’s an event. A buzz hums through the air like the low thrum of distant sleigh bells, and the crowd—beaming faces, flushed cheeks, oversized scarves—feels like a live-action Love Actually montage. People aren’t just drinking here; they’re celebrating. Even outside, under heaters that barely hold back the December chill, punters huddle together with their pints and look ridiculously happy about it. If ever a pub was designed for the Christmas season, this is it. Go for a glass of wine, a pint, or just to soak up the festive cheer spilling out onto those historic cobbled streets. It’s not just a pub; it’s a December institution.

If you're looking for a top-notch Sunday roast in the heart of Bristol, The Christmas Steps Pub is the place to be. Nestled in a charming, historic part of the city, this cozy pub serves up a roast that’s both hearty and comforting, making it a perfect way to end your week. Our roast featured perfectly cooked roast beef and succulent chicken all served with crispy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rich gravy and fluffy Yorkshire puddings- which really stood out. The atmosphere of the pub itself adds to the experience, with its welcoming, old-world charm, and friendly staff ensuring that you're well taken care of throughout your visit. Whether you're enjoying a casual family meal or catching up with friends, it’s the ideal setting for a relaxed Sunday. Overall, The Christmas Steps Pub delivers a classic roast with a touch of excellence. The quality of the ingredients, the attention to detail in the preparation, and the inviting atmosphere make it a Sunday roast worth returning for time and time again. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors alike!

We were served by clearly hungover young staff that obviously wanted/needed to be in bed rather than work. We did try and book ahead, was told we could have a walk in table outside for our party of 4 which was fine, then after this, we were proceeded to made feel like an inconvenience. Nobody checked back on our table after food was delivered, we had to keep going up the bar to ask for condiments and extra drinks (which were furiously slammed down on our table when they eventually turned up) then to top it off, the roasts were seriously under seasoned, bland and very over priced. It’s a shame because I’ve heard that the roasts here were supposed to be lovely but everything turned out to be sad state of affairs. Save your money. There are a LOTS of other places to go to in Bristol for a roast that have excellent service and quality ingredients.

Horrible food and service. We waited 45 minutes for our Sunday roast only for it to arrive overcooked. Eating the beef was like chewing on cardboard. We went for a Sunday roast and the food was outstanding - some of the best roast potatoes I’ve had for a long time, and the meat was perfectly tender. The side vegetables tasted wonderful too. Sadly, the service was disappointing. We were left feeling like they would have rather not been serving us - even when they did come and check in on us, it was like they didn’t actually want to. And one of our mains arrived more than 10 minutes after everyone else’s. Finally to top it all off, the bill at the end was wrong and we had to ask for an item to be removed. If the service had been better this would have been a perfect review.

Booked a table using their online portal for a Sunday Roast on 3rd March for a group who, including myself, would have been dining here for the first time. Turned up to find that, despite getting confirmation on the web window and having put a payment in as a deposit for their no-show policy, they had not recorded or kept my booking, or ever sent a confirmation email. Disappointed to find the restaurant unsympathetic to the problem they’d caused for my group and offered no resolution to this, with little prospect of getting a walk in Sunday Roast elsewhere. Incidentally they explained we had not been the first to arrive that Sunday with the same complaint and were therefore clearly aware there had been an issue which they made no effort to rectify. Have the cheek to pre-emptively charge me for a now show, yet there’s no means by which I can charge for a ‘no-show’ of my confirmed booked table?

Had a table for 8 booked last night (Saturday). No mention on the menus , so confused if it was table service or order at the bar. While deciding, we were told at least 50% of the menu was unavailable. Ordering at the bar doesn't really work for large groups, especially when its 3 deep at the bar. All the tables seen to have been pre booked for food, so lots of 'drinkers' just standing everywhere. Booked the table for 7.30, food didn't turn up until nearly 9. We were offered a round of drinks as an apology. The food was delicious when it did arrive. The pub is on 2 levels so it would be very easy to have one level for table service for food and one level unreserved for drinkers only. Won't be rushing to return.

We had to return a pint of Fortitude as it was undrinkable. The keg beer was pricey at £6.80 a pint. We also had to ask for the pint of bitter to be topped up as the glass wasn’t full, just a minor grumble.. why was the bitter served in old style glasses with handles 🤔. They also do not accept cash only card payments. We shan’t be back.

Nice pub that I go to quite regularly. I would give it 5 stars, but they have this silly system where absolutely all of their tables can be reserved online. So, there's never anywhere to sit. Usually really pleased with this place but had Sunday roast today. Reservation was 5.45pm. After a lovely main course we asked to order desert and we were told the kitchen closed at 6pm. Why have a reservation time if you can’t offer a full service?! At least tell the customer when they sit down that the kitchen closes before you finish your meal. Crazy! We would have stayed late in to the night for a few drinks but were so annoyed at the stupidity we just paid the bill and went home. And to make things worse we had to explain why not telling us when we sat down was a problem in order to receive a vague apology. Obviously there would be an expectation that we can order desert after a main which the staff did not understand.

Booked a table of 13 for Christmas dinner way back in October so was pretty shocked to discover my tables had been split up and shoved right next to the front door in the pub (which I was not told about before hand). Appreciate it’s a busy time of year but we had no table service whatsoever and had to order all our drinks at a heaving bar! It was so busy we had general bar goers perching on the end of our table while we ate. Had to ask twice for our food to arrive and when it did the mains were cold. Had to get desserts to go as they took too long. So disappointed as had heard such good things about this place. When you’re a table that’s bringing in >£500 not really good enough.

We were not allowed to have a drink at the table that was booked for two hours later as “it was already layed out”. Wow, this place did not disappoint. We had to wait 10 to 15 minutes as the queue was outside the door, but it was well worth the wait. There was a wide variety of fillings to choose from. The sandwich was so tasty, fresh, and had good quality ingredients. They are very generous with the fillings. It was delicious and well worth the money. The chilli and cheddar sausage roll was delicious. I will definitely go back there and try the scotch egg. This is worth the visit if you’re in Bristol.
