The Chippy in Portsmouth

i had wrote a review yrear ago how this was the best chippy on the south coast now its total garbage . we felt robbed after getting two cod and chips. the fish was old and small. the chips were lots and lots floating in oil. never going there again.

AVOID do not order online got ripped off £24.10 debited from my account no delivery received whats worst is restaurant saying never received order and wanted me to go to them to show proof.no help from staff what so ever i m disabled and it is why i order a delivery as i have mobility issues

Absolutely gopping. Ordered 2 cod and chips, took over half an hour. I think they were growing the spuds. The fish was tiny, coated in the worst batter you could imagine, pre-battered frozen fish from Iceland is better by far. Worse still is that it was so overcooked the 'batter' was almost black. And who the heck leaves skin on cod!!! And £23 for 2 small fish and chips is ridiculous. I felt like I had to ring 999 and report a robbery.

Chips raw in the middle. Tiny cod was £9......... Awful meal. Won't be back. You need to cook your food properly.

Awful food.. grease ridden chips and soggy fish.. pie was rock hard no filling in it (must have been sat there for hours) not even the seagulls down the beach would eat it

I can throughly recommend The Chippy, it’s a Friday treat, very friendly and excellent scampi and chips

chips were not fresh they were dried up and chewy the pie seemed like it had been kept hot for hours the pastry was hard and the filling dried up . NEVER going there again

Been an occasional user of The Chippy for many years now and always rated it highly and my favourite fish and chip shop in the area. However, went in a number of weeks ago and was disappointed with the food. I understand that it has changed hands, so not wanting to judge on one experience bought a meal there last night. It was again very disappointing - the chips were cold and soggy. Shame, as it's the nearest to where I live.

Chips weren’t cooked and took ages. The whole kitchen was left unattended many times and crease was everywhere

The fish & chips are by far the best in the area , fresh cut chips and fresh fish unlike a lot of places that do frozen , their pies are also good and they do a meal deal , you may have to wait a little because the food is cooked to order so its always hot , this Chippy gets 10 out of 10 from me .

Staying down here for a few days I popped in here and can only compare the fish and chips to what I am used to at home (Manchester). Firstly the price is nearly double what I'm used to, strange when we are not a coastal city, the fish was actually on the small side and leaving the skin on was not for me, the batter was soggy instead of being light and crispy. The chips were good piping hot and tasty, but the fish and price overall was not for me.

There isn't a huge amount you can say about a take away fish and chip shop. I can say that I am happy to drive the 10 miles to this place and eat in the car than go anywhere else. The portions are plentiful and the fish is always wonderfully fresh and cooked to perfection. There is no better chippy than this.

What outstanding food . We have been all over england wales scotland testing out chip shops and this one beats them all. We happened to bee at pole harbour testing and there we felt as iff we should have thrown the fish back at them. Well done chippy keep it up xxxx

Best fish and chips on the south coast. Better than the other frozen chips your given in other places. We live over 2 miles from this chippy but that wont stop us from walking there or driving there.

we usually grab chips hereafter the drive down to visit a mate in the city. chips are good, can be a bit slow if theres a few people around

this is a nice traditional fish and chip shop not much else to say really......except the food is great!

Always use this chippy when in Southsea, can't really fault it. The only gripe is the opening times can be a bit hit or miss, have been there a few times when supposed to be open at lunch time and still been close half hour later but the yummy food makes up for it.

A proper chippy. Superbly crisp chips and well fried fish. Best enjoyed 'open' so the food doesn't go soggy (as would always happen). Quite probably the best take away chippy in the area.

Freshly cooked food. piping hot and served by friendly staff. Nice crispy batter. Open seven days a week. Highly recommended.

This is the best fish and chip shop ever!! When in Southsea don't miss a visit. Unfortunately there isn't a facility to eat in but who can beat fish and chips on the beach.

Metido en unas cuantas papas fritas y quedé realmente impresionado, muy caliente y extremadamente sabroso, pero llegué al bacalao y uno de los peores que he tenido agua extremadamente, la masa no cocida aún podía saborear la harina en los pantalones y estaba pegada al papel y goteando a través de ella. estaba tan húmedo y luego el bacalao en sí mismo no estaba mucho mejor sin sabor y solo estaba casi cocido. Extremadamente decepcionante para un chippy junto al mar, especialmente dado su precio caro.

Fish and chips for 2 hungry adults and 2 hungry boys (aged 12). 4 fish ordered and 2 chips spread into four portions. All cooked fresh in front of us, very friendly proprietor rightly proud of her offer. Highly recommended.

Use this fish and chip shop regularly. Service and food excellent.....absolutely no qualms, extremely clean and great value

This is a traditional chippy, if that’s what you want you won’t find better. Get your fish and chips and eat them on the beach (a two minute walk) can’t beat it

El personal (el hombre que fríe el pescado) fue extremadamente grosero conmigo por ninguna otra razón que él estaba de mal humor y pensó que yo era un blanco fácil. The service was great, the fish fried to order and tasted excellent, with very nice chips and mushy peas. Located just off the main Southsea seafront.

40-mile round trip based on previous reviews. Nice chips & plenty of them. Tasty fish however only three stars as the batter was slightly undercooked resulting in all being stuck to the wrapping paper and inedible. Wish I'd had my phone to take a photo.

Great portion sizes, chips cooked properly, fab batter, simply brilliant and well worth the inevitable queue!

We always visit this chip shop when we are in Portsmouth, my husband loves the fish and the pea fritters are the best I've ever eaten. The staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable.

A friendly helpful chip shop not far from the seafront. We often visit whilst in the area and the fish and chips are fantastic. I love their plaice and it’s cooked fresh. Prices are good and there’s no greasy feeling after eating them.

I have shared pie and chips from there a few times over the years and always found it re-cooked and inedible.

Found this little gem tucked away. I had cod and chips. Fish cooked to perfection. Batter not greasy and chips were fresh and tasted like the oil had just been changed unlike some chippies. Very reasonable in price and quick service.

Cod and chips x 2, 26/10/17. Returned for the second time this year to enjoy huge portions excellently cooked and served by a very nice young lady. We think this chippy is the best, well worth our 120 mile journey!!

There is good reason that every weekend all the year round there is a queue out the door of this place - you will not find better fish and chips in the whole of Portsmouth and I must've tried them all. None of your white undercooked chips as is often the case and good portion sizes of fish always cooked fresh to order.

The title is pretty sufficient. This is a little shop in Southsea on Clarendron road and has a variety of fish and chips meals. You can get a "medium" cod and decent amount of chips for less then 7 pounds and the fish is more than just a medium. They have other items as well like sausages and pies but I only tried the fish which was really good. The staff is very friendly and polite.

Visité aquí ayer, viernes 7 de julio de 2017, en un día de viaje desde Londres. Fue uno de los días más calurosos del año y cuando junto al mar, para mí, siempre es agradable para comer patatas fritas pescado n. Llamé aquí y pedimos bacalao y patatas fritas por £6. 50. Mientras mi almuerzo estaba cocinando, las señoras aquí era encantador y muy agradable para charlar. El bacalao y las patatas fritas eran verdaderamente sensacionales de sabor y presentación - sin duda, el mejor pescado y patatas fritas que me he comido todo el año. El bacalao un sabor maravilloso, el bateador fue hecho perfectamente y era suave y luz dorada. Por £6. 50 fue una magnífica porción de tamaño medio. Qué maravillosa bienvenido a Southsea. El día perfecto de patatas fritas de pescado para el almuerzo, n seguido de una de las encantadoras playas nadar en las cálidas aguas del Solent. Gracias x

Esto no es sólo cualquier pescado viejo! ! ! Esto es real y que es abadejo bacalao tan excelentes para probar y las patatas fritas son sublimes. . Todos cocinados a la orden con una buena puñado de bromas personal tirado! ! ! 1 Calidad...

Extra grande cod y patatas fritas perfectamente preparado por gente amable. A pie a la cercana frente al mar y comer mirando al mar. Esto es lo que nuestro mar. Excelente.

Lo que me encanta de este "fish and chips" tanto como la comida es genial, es el hecho de que es uno de una raza de morir de buen pescado antiguo y chip tiendas. Son alegres y la comida es buena, cocinados a la orden, no esperando alrededor de su llegada

Discovered this little fish and chip shop a while back. It's just your typical local fish and chip shop, but the food is good, and it's reasonably priced. I'd definitely recommend it!

Brilliant fish and chips and entertaining service while you wait for freshly cooked food. Be prepared for a bit of a wait but definitely worth it.

On Thursday 14 July. On that night it was our second visit. The first visit was on Monday 11 July when we arrived at hotel to stay for a short visit because the chips were so brilliantly tasty. Second visit was disappointing no were as good as first time. I had normal size chips and chicken because there was no fish and wait was susposed to be over ten minutes and my fiance had small chips and steak & kidney pie. When we went to eat them they were awful and chicken had a slight funny smell I tried a small piece of chicken the bit I tried tasted really bad. Pie hardly had any meat and was soggy didn't taste that good. Just gave it all to the seaguls. Even the seaguals didn't went any of it they flew away. Thats says it all for me and it was very pricey it cost over £10. If the food was all good or near to it as first time i would have given 5 star. But i rate this chippy as 0 star. Avoid it like the plague.

I work nearby and several of our staff regularly treat themselves, buying their lunch from here. Friendly staff, hot and crispy chips. The cafe next door is lovely too. (Linked to The Chippy) We and our kids love this chippy and it's fairly reasonable. (Large chips for about £2) Sauce is expensive at 30p so buy s bottle for a quid from the shop next door.

Walked to The Chippy from our hotel on a cold and blustery night. The chips were awesome and I would highly recommend them!

Not only is the fish cooked to order (and to perfection) but the chips are double cooked so well worth the calories and their pea fritters are the best you will EVER find. I am amazed more people haven't left amazing reviews - I've introduced half a dozen people to this chippy and they never return to their previous chippy....

Excellent fish and chips, always cooked to order, very reasonable prices unlike some, and a queue out of the door...must be good!
