The Chippie in Richmondshire

We went to the Hawes Chippy Thursday 8 November 2024 at 6.20 pm to get takeaway fish and chips. We joined the queue which was outside the shop 10 separate people or couples waiting and 7 in the actual shop. The people that came out of the shop with their food rolled their eyes the comments mainly were Good Luck !!! They were doing fry to order which is fair enough but we did not actually get served until 7.30 luckily it was not raining. The service area for the lovely ladies to work in is far too small this resulted in the slow service to wrap the food as they had no space to work the food was piling up in the window. The Fish and Chips were lovely can’t fault them the staff and the fryer really nice but under pressure.

The cafe is warm and comfortable to eat. They cook everything fresh. The fish looked huge ( we didn't order that) Chips were great, homemade fishcakes were massive. We tried deep fried Wensleydale cheese and enjoyed it. We recommend this chip shop/cafe to everyone. Fantastic!

Couldn’t get to eat on any of the pubs in Hawes as we hadn’t booked….so landed up in the chippy…. Home made steak pie on offer….. best there is or ever will be …. Good sized portions, staff friendly……. Top banana

Woke up to a glorious morning so decided to have a drive to Hawes for the usual excellent fish and chips, after checking the website to make sure they would be open off we set, parking was a struggle but after all it was a lovely day, walked down from the car park and what a let down - it was CLOSED ! Not happy that we had driven 40 miles after checking, surely it would take no time at all to amend the opening times on the web site.

Generous portions and well cooked. Delicious fish. Enormous sausages! Prepared quickly. Reasonable price. What more could you ask of a chippie?

The best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Had fish and chips in Whitby last week and this might be radical but these were better. Huge piece of fish, light batter, fresh chips and gorgeous curry sauce, yum.

Excellent food, however extremely slow service. One guy asks what you want as you enter, another guy serves the takeaway and the cafe Then a women wraps the food to takeout Was there Sat eve very busy and took 1/2 to get served. Had to wait 5 mins as ran out of fish, yet guy on door took orders so don't make sense Food is brilliant but Def needs to get the que down better. I'd say need more serving staff. If you are happy to wait then it is worth it.

Clean and efficient.. I had the Haddock & Chips.. plus Battered Wensleydale.. The fish was 10/10.. the Battered Wensleydale was life shorteningly delicious .. Nothing that tastes that good can be healthy.. Chips were a solid 7/10 I’d recommend the place solely on the fish.. I can imagine it’s less busy / easier to park in the week. 👏👍

On our annual visit to Hawes we always have a meal at The Chippie, for the first time tonight I had a fishcake, absolutely delicious with a crispy batter. Friendly and very fast service. Thank you.

Brilliant fish and chips, take our word for it because we know our fish and chips, don’t take any notice of the bad reviews, besides people shouldn’t be giving bad reviews for non food quality related issues. Great Chiipy. Food was hot, service was good, batter was crispy and light and chips were perfect…..oh and prices are pretty good too compared with some places to sit down.

Spotted this place and thought I must have some fish and chips. I wasn’t really hungry but they looked great. Absolutely superb, don’t think I’ve had much better and the price, UNBELIEVABLE. Top marks for a top place. Highly recommended.

I was here in May on a Sunday afternoon at the end of a bank Holliday weekend. I don’t know how they survived. Sooo busy. I bought fish and chips take away. Simply brilliant. Pity I live in Australia as it is a long way to go back and get more.

Lunch but unfortunately we didn't eat. Because it was card only and we just had cash. Find this very shocking telling customer how to pay for food. Definitely won't return or recommend to to anyone.

We had takeaway fish and chips from the Chippie. Haddock was fresh and tender, and the portions were generous, the breading crisp. Chips were a little soggy. One diner had a breaded black pudding which was pretty heavy. Many many people waiting in line from the time it opens, so go early and still expect a wait.

Do not know what restaurant was like as they only took card and always use cash so never went in so I might of missed out on a nice meal

Oh wow this place is 👌 we sat in the cafe side and we’re very warmly welcome by an Australian lady - she was really attentive! The deep fried Wensleydale and curry sauce are stand out dishes for me! We will most def be back!!

Return visit. Cooked the best traditional Yorkshire way in beef dripping.Myself and partner had the haddock special. Asked for lightly battered well done. Arrived HUGE fish, fresh, chunky and tasty cooked as requested. Peas were lovely, we were both not so keen on the chips this time they appeared to be crunchy (apparently down to the type of potatoes). Ordered a curry sauce, not the same as last time, very unusual, (a good old fashioned chip shop curry cant be beaten!).Service was excellent. Ordered and received very quickly. Still my best fish shop by far I won't eat locally after eating these, everyone else's looks meager! See you again soon!

Up on holiday saw previous reviews commenting on dry overcooked fish but decided to give it a try. All I can say is we had an excellent experience, very friendly staff, fish and chips cooked to perfection, premises spotlessly clean, more than happy to recommend to anyone.

It was not as good as was suggested. i am afraid we took advice to try the Chippy for great fish and large portions. Well, with that suggestion, as we were staying at the caravan and motorhome site off, i went and ordered 2 haddock and chips and one side of mushy peas. Back in the motorhome to tuck in and yes portions were good however quality was not as suggested. Chips were fine but not stunning, slightly overdone in my mind. My mushy peas were good, but the bit you have to get right is the fish. I am afraid it was or cooked in fat that was too hot. It was dry and just did not flake at all. It was a real shame as it was a decent portion and was quite thick, but we were both disappointed.

The fish, whilst it looked nice was overcooked and dry. Chips average and the curry sauce lacked flavour. Definitely not worth the money nor the drive. Wish we’d stopped 15 miles earlier and got them from Leyburn

Disappointed. ☹️. We travel a 94 mile round trip for The Hawes Chippie haddock and chips and have always had the best fish and chips ever but today and a few weeks ago the haddock was dry and stuck to the thick orange batter so it was inedible. Could it have been cooked earlier and left waiting for an unsuspecting customer? I don’t know . But, the next time we go for fish and chips we will try elsewhere. Very very disappointed. Hope the local guy in front of us in the queue had better quality food.

Absolutely gorgeous fish and chips best there is . I’ve had fish and chips all over the country but this chippy is the best in my humble opinion .

Thought I was in London not the dales 4.25 for apparently a large portion of chips to takeaway its a spud the chips that were edible ok nothing special won't bother again rather pay a bit more and have decent meal in the lovely pubs.

Have visited Hawes regularly for over 30 years but only started using the Chippie in the past 3/4 years. Never fails to please called in today (3rd Feb) and noticed they did battered haggis. Asked by the friendly man what I required I ordered 2 haggis and fish and chips to share between myself, my wife and our elderly Border terrier. Everything was cooked to perfection & tasted lovely. Can highly recommend a visit if you're in the Hawes area.

Absolutely the best fish and chips, I go frequently and the standard never slips. The staff are cheerful and friendly. I was one character short so had to add this sentence.

Have been here several times and food is always outstanding, curry sauce is a particular highlight, onion rings are great and everything is not greasy, unlike other chip shops I've been to!

Visited twice for take-away during our weeks stay in Hawes. Very popular as usually a line outside the door. Very good quality fish and chips cooked to order - no complaints.

Wish there was a good button. It was better than average but not very good. All good was very hot and freshly cooked. Portions large. Fish a bit greasy and uneven batter didn't help. Tartare sauce horrible

Fantastic chippie. The haddock was absolutely massive and perfectly cooked, the batter was lovely and crispy and not greasy. Nice chips and a huge portion. Everything cooked fresh to order as well.

Called in and had tge chippy dinner, fish, mushy peas and chips with tea and bread and butter. It was a substantial meal, the fish was excellent, cooked well. Staff friendly

Really good fish and chips. Chips nice and crisp and generous portions. Lovely mushy peas. Would definitely recommend. Only downside was the long queue but well worth the wait.

Fish and chips is probably my favourite meal so I have had plenty of them in various locations but I can honestly say that my haddock and chips from The Chippie yesterday was amongst the best I have tasted....the batter on the fish was THE best I have ever tasted.....will be visiting again !!

This is a small chippy and can get busy. The usual selection of food, we just went for a tray of chips. Very friendly staff, a bit pricey but I suppose it’s what you expect with such a high volume of visitors to the village.

We ate at “the Chippie” on our first night in Hawes. The staff were extremely friendly and they made us feel very welcome. My husband and daughter both had haddock and chip,which was very good. I had the homemade steak pie and chips which was amazing. A definite recommendation if you are staying in Hawes.

Great location in the village of Hawes with plenty of shops and pubs. Staff V. friendly, good service along with very tasty food whatever you choose. I had just the Curry and Chips and the wife had the Steak Pie. This was one of the best. Would definitely recommend.

We called in for our supper, I had Haddock and chips, my husband had Scampi and chips, they were very generous portions and absolutely delicious, the service was friendly and quick. Look forward to our next visit. Thank you.

Best fish and chips shop. We always have them when holidaying in Hawes. A must visit when you are here.

I went with biker friends and along our journey we arrived and called in for some food and was only place open to get food and drink without leaving bikes outside a pub.

Excellent traditional fish and chip shop, we ate in and avoided the queue out the door for takeaway (a good sign). We were seated and served quickly. Highly recommend- it is card only but this wasn’t an issue for us.

Having struggled to get booked in anywhere to eat on Sunday night, opted for The Chippie. Both had Haddock and Chips and wow best Chippie Tea we've had in a long time. Fish so fresh and chips just perfect.

Visited Hawes Easter Sunday, 2 portions of F&C(£8.50p each) Without doubt the best we have had (we’re over 40). The chips were golden brown, slightly crisp and no grease at all. Fish was really fresh and perfect batter. Highly recommend.

Sometimes you just want something simple done perfectly and this is it. Best fish and chips we have had for a long time also can recommend the battered Wensleydale cheese which is a local delicacy.

Had a delicious chip supper here a few evenings ago, the chips were excellent and the deep fried Wensleydale is a MUST!

These are worth queuing up for. The chips have a gorgeous crispy coating and the fish batter is super. We rarely eat fish n chips but had two visits in one week!!

Great food, great prices, great portions, great service. Unsurprisingly people are queuing out of the door every evening.

Faultless service, prices and quality. Also quick and slick service for an unsurprisingly popular chippy. On holiday but will be back before we return home.
