We booked Sunday lunch with my sister and brother in law, we wanted to try the Chestnut Horse with the intention to book for Christmas. The starters were lovely but not to be said for the main course, my sister and I had the roast beef, the beef was cut thickly and the whole plate full was verging on cold, my sister order extra cauliflower cheese which arrived towards the end of her meal. We ordered puddings, my sisters came first, ice cream, and ours arrived half an hour later and was not fully as we ordered. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic. Such a shame for a lovely country pub.

What a super 'find' for lunch with my brother and his wife, in a lovely village midway between their home and our own. We found The Chestnut Horse to be a rather special place with attractive, spacious dining areas, an imaginative and realistically-priced menu, and enthusiastic, friendly staff. With a 'wake' taking place in addition to all the peak lunchtime traffic, they really needed one more team member to keep ahead of the game. Menu highlight? The feather blade steak. Two internal features worth a mention are a few (again sensibly-priced) 'farm shop' items, and a spotless and obviously-efficient open kitchen. The pub has its own car park, the only negative feature of which is one marked space which, if used, prevents the entry and exit of other vehicles.

We had visited this pub once before for a drink after a day out so we decided to try out the food there. It was a fiasco as soon as we arrived. We were told the table we had booked wasn’t ready so they were going to put us in an area which was like a glorified cafe. I asked if we could sit in the traditional, older area and the waitress went to check. We were left in the bar area, and despite there being several members of staff behind the bar not once were we asked if we wanted to order a drink, until we were about to be shown to our table. We were shown to our table and water was bought to us and after about 15 minutes someone arrived to take our drink order, we gave our food order at the same time. The menu wasn’t very clear as it was a 2 course menu for £27 which is fine if you want a 2 course meal, but we are not big eaters and just wanted the roast. There was no individual price listed for that. The waiter had to go and check if we could just have a main(which it turned out we could) We didn’t have to wait long for our meal, unfortunately this wasn’t very warm despite the plates being warm, but it came before our drink which I queried and it was bought to us in the middle of our meal. Ten minutes later another drink arrived which hadn’t been ordered. All in all a disappointment which is a shame as I’d booked for later in November to take friends there, which I have now cancelled. No gratuity was given

Not a great experience First I will say that the pub is very pretty and looks very upmarket. However, £5 each for an average scotch egg and a sausage roll (no garnish) is not great, we had almost finished our drinks before they were delivered to our table (about 15 steps from the cabinets where the food was). We didn't find the staff friendly at all. The worst was a disabled man in a mobility scooter, no one greeted him, or came to ask if he wanted help or to place an order. Eventually he moved directly in front of the doorway (all glass and surrounds) and still no one spoke to him, I had to go and ask a member of staff to help. Embarrassing 😬

Beautiful pub, in a lovely setting. Super cosy. Wonderful deli. And best of all incredible food. We had the lamb for 2, with sides and it was stunning. Felt like a real treat! We found out on our way out that it has only been open 6 months. You’d never know, everything was slick and really nicely done. It has the feel of a well establish village pub

Visited for the first time, the staff were pleasant and pub very cosy, my wife ordered Caesar salad with chicken and I had trout with salad, after my wife had one fork of the meal I noticed a hair in her meal which I pulled out which was at least 6 inches long. I took her bowl to the bar and a young gentleman asked if there was a problem and I showed him the hair, no apologies just asked if I would like to Oder a different meal, my wife declined after that incident and on paying the bill no apology or a gesture of good will by not paying for our drinks. Customer service appalling.

Unfortunately very poor all in all. Food was mediocre at best and some of it stone cold. Service basically non existent. Forgot our drinks which to their credit they did remove one from the bill, but they should have removed both drinks from the bill. By rights they should have at least discounted the mains as we couldn’t eat all if it as was cold, but they didn’t. We would have returned it but we didn’t see a member of staff during our meal once. Won’t be returning I’m afraid.

Very busy pub. We came for lunch on a Saturday. Three drinks bought and we had to chase 4th. Waitress very sweet but we kept having to remind her to bring items. Food seem to take ages to arrive. I had the burger which was very nice. Others had the lamb pie, which I am told was delicious but quite small. We all had puds. I had the chocolate and caramel tart - I think that is what it was called! Not very exciting. Bit tasteless really. Others had Winchester sponge. That was very small. Overall visit was ok. Don’t think we will be back though.

Disappointed. Standard of food not in keeping with the decor. Baked Camembert like a bowl of salty custard, Cheeseburger very average along with the rest of the meal. Watch out for the 12.5% service and difficult parking. Would not visit again for some time. Good refurb, good food and atmosphere BUT it was as though accessibility hadn't really been thought about and my requst on booking system was totally ignored! Requested to be near the entrance, close to toilets with clear access to them. We were seated at the furthest away table, had to weave through tables, move a sofa (!) and diners had to stand and move their chairs away to let me pass. Very disappointing. Do you actually read the requests on the booking system? I had already spoken to someoone on the phone so knew some of the changes. Better and clearer photos and an access statement on your website could help. I think you need an additional acessible toilet: having only one, which doubles as a ladies isn't enough if the pub is full. Made things difficult and less enjoyable unfortunately.

Birthday lunch. Service really slow. Food arrived before drinks. Servers need training. Chef can be seen and heard in kitchen- which is a problem when you send a sandwich back because it doesn’t contain all of the ingredients on the menu and you hear an arrogant chef moaning, rather than wanting to listen to the customer feedback.

We live in the village and have been eagerly awaiting the reopening and it doesn't disappoint. The ambience is perfect a mixture of old world charm with a contemporary look in parts. Real fires and smart bar and eating areas. We have enjoyed morning coffee and pastries as well as lunch with friends. The food is of a high standard and enjoyable alhough the lunch menu is the main menu plus a range of sandwiches, vegetarian pastas and quiches would be nice. We look forward trying Sunday lunch.

Terrible. We had been waiting such a long time for this pub to open and it was so disappointing. We sat by the kitchen and basically ended up listening to the kitchen staff mess about - not so sure it’s that hygienic and there was quite a lot of swearing. If you are going to have an open kitchen it needs to be spectacular!! Food was less than average and we waited an hour and 15 mins for mains - they also added service which we asked them to remove and the manager came over and asked us why!! And then said something like ‘well we won’t be seeing you again’ - couldn’t believe it - really such a shame 😳

Nice refurb. Had the sandwiches for lunch which were very average. £5 for the very meagre portion of chips was a bit steep. Ordered tea after the meal - was served half a cup of hot water with a tea bag dangling from it (£3) which I rescued immediately but it left the tea stewed not brewed. Complained but was told the tea pots were still on order. No apology. No one brought us a bill so went to the counter to pay - it seemed expensive for what we had eaten. Checked my receipt / had been stung for 12.5% charge without my knowledge as I had not seen a bill. Couldn’t make a fuss as I had been treating a dear friend to a birthday lunch. Furious! Won’t be going back. Service was ok but not that good! And I don’t like not being told!

Refurb has created a great space. However we were really disappointed - ordered 3 items from bar / deli . All arrived at different times 1 was cold 1 was burnt and 1 was just about ok and drink order was also wrong . Main issue really was staff attitude rude and offhand. Has to ask several times for napkins and cutlery . Spoke to person who we thought was perhaps the manager to discuss who was totally inept - asked me “ what do you want me to do about it “ Hopeful this is just teething problems but think staff training needs to be a priority .

Went there for an impromptu evening meal with family and were lucky to get a table. Table 1 intact right by the kitchen pass Dinner was ok, bit pricey for what it was. I had the pie which was supposed to be chicken leek and ham. Too much ham which made it very salty. Others in the family enjoyed their meals. Ordered sweet but sadly what we wanted wasn’t available although why weren’t we told that what we ask for the dessert menu I don’t know? Staff were pleasant enough but some to the younger staff could do with a little more training like being side plates for the bread and topping up drinks.

The Chestnut Horse is under new management and I decided to give it a go. Tucked away in the village of Easton just to the east of Winchester this is a lovely country pub. I went with the boss, my good lady wife, at 1800 on a busy Bank Holiday Monday having previously booked. It was clear from the reserved signs on tables that the pub was going to be busy later that evening. There was an excellent choice of starters, main courses and desserts. Having first purchased a really nice draught cider (Mortimers) and a G&T (MIllers as recommended by the landlord Paul) we opted for starters of Ham Hock Terrine and my wife chose the Vegetable Pakora with chilli jam dipping sauce. My terrine was very tasty and came with a delicious salad and fresh artisan style bread. My wife said the chilli jam was nice and spicy. For mains I went for the Hampshire beef patty which had streaky bacon and cheese together with chilli jam and some delicious fries. Very happy with my option as it tasted great, the burger excellently spiced and the chilli jam sauce well zingy! My good lady opted for the fish pie which she said was also very tasty.Between us we had the chocolate brownie dessert followed by coffee. All in all an excellent visit and one which I have no hesitation in recommending as being worthy of a visit.Lots of COVID precautions in place, sanitisers and social distancing, staff attentive, polite and fully conversant as to how to serve during these difficult times.Make the effort to visit, you won't be sorry.

But the bench seating to the rear of the bar/kitchen was uncomfortable and noisy (from thre kitchen). Starters almost OK but wife's soup was poor (the peppers had been burnt) and the accompanying bread diabolical. Mains good but the Easton mess dessert could have had more fruit. Perhaps we chose poorly and I suppose we could have moved tables had we realised the high level f noise. But on balance it's a comforatble pub/res aurant which, in the main, probably a better customer than I.

It is some years since I last visited the Chestnut Horse and prompted by friends we decided a return was a good idea. It was a big mistake. The menu was limited and so unattractive that not one of the four of us opted for a starter and went directly to mains. One had a basic steak which was OK butt came without trimmings. We took a large element home for the dog The fish pie was a soggy mush with little evidence of fish served with a raw (freshly picked ?) cabbage leaf. The rissotto was 'average' and the gentleman who opted for the sausages abandoned the exercise and sent them back. He claimed that he would not offer them to his dog, but at least they had the courtesy not to charge for his meal.We considered the sweets but two of us decided against as custard (in my view a 'must' with crumble) was not available. My wife chose an Eton Mess which did not resemble anything she has experienced under that description in the past. Our friend managed to work her way through a solid lump of her sweet before throwing in the towel. We had enjoyed each other's company but nothing else.

The atmosphere of other customers was hugely encouraging :-) Cant wait to return for a proper visit and meal.(for cyclists: the staff were very accommodating allowing us to refill our water bottles from their outside tap - THANK YOU)

what have they done with this place?, i barley recognised it, not having visited for a while? What had been a beautiful traditional genuine country pub atmosphere has been largely spoiled (in my view) with a "modern" makeover, For example they have even painted over natural brick and wood finishes with a strange shade of blue. WHAAAT?!Whilst the beer was as good as ever and doubtless the food will be as well (we didn't eat on this visit) it just doesn't feel the same.

Have not visited the Chestnut Horse for a couple of years so we gave it another try.New owners since last time, quiet, for a Saturday night (we had booked but probably no need to have done so).Warm hosts, nice bar scene, menu rather limited but accompanied by a good specials (mains only) board.Food was good, service was slow, even though they were quiet.Prices reasonable and recommend the seafood spaghetti, and the beef blade.Nice atmosphere, and dogs are also welcome.

Booked for a family celebration and we were NOT disappointed by the tasty freshly cooked food and excellent service. The best surprise was the bill which was very reasonable. The revamp has much improved on the previous rather old fashioned interior and we will definitely be returning.

Met a friend with a dog for an early evening meal at The Chestnut Horse and was made super welcome by the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The log burner kept us toastie warm for our long chat and we would definitely visit this lovely little village pub again.

We popped in for lunch on New Year's Eve during a walk as we hadn't visited the pub since it had been under new ownership. I'm now sorry we had. When we first stepped in the hand pumps had no beers showing which panicked me, but I was immediately reassured by the barman that there were ales on, they just hadn't had time to change the nameplates. Phew !We asked for a table for lunch and the friendly waitress showed us to a table in the pub area telling us that if we wanted food, there would be an approximate wait of 20 minutes, which we were fine with. She gave us each a menu, which was pretty limited and uninspiring. We placed our order, had our drinks and waited for the food. The pub istelf is lovely, cosy and nicely decorated, so passing the time for the food wasn't a problem, the beer was good and things seemed to be going ok. Our food was bought to us, my wife's buger and chips seemed fine, my 2 wafer thin slices ham, burned duck egg and 5 chips came on what can only be described as a saucer. The waitress left us before I could say anything, so upon her return I asked if she had served me a childs portion. She replied that she thought it was a bit strange when she served me (yet she still served me !). I asked her to take it to the kitchen and ask what the issue was. Less than a minute later she came back with what was on the previous plate scraped onto a bigger plate with three more chips ! The ham was in a pile, the egg still burnt (and colder). She asked if that was ok, I looked at it and slightly aghast, nodded. According to my wife, the burger was lovely. My meal was below average at best, and for £13 ridiculously overpriced. I can't really blame the waitress as she was young and literally apologising to every table for the wait, but we paid for an overpriced meal with no apology or explaination.Looking at other reviews, there is something seriously wrong with the organisation and service within the pub. Would I go back ? For a drink and due to its location, yes. For a meal no. If the Chestnut Horse wants to survive, it really needs to up its game.

We've been visiting the Chestnut Horse for a pre-Christmas meal for 10 years but were disappointed this December. It appears to be under new management... The food is much less interesting, with less variety and the quality was mediocre. Perhaps worst of all - the place was so cold I needed to leave my overcoat on for much of the time whereas it used to be cosy and comfortable. What a shame! Don't know if we'll bother again.

Having visited this pub in the past we were not expecting such a disastrous outcome. Our family (ten people and a child) arrived soon after 12 p.m. Our orders were taken after a wait. The wrong starters arrived after another wait and were removed causing another delay before the correct ones arrived. There was a prolonged wait in spite of our queries and by 2:45 when some of us had had nothing to eat, not having ordered starters, we gave up and left. We heard other tables complaining about the service and the lack of a manager on site.

Popped into this lovely pub with some friends on a walk. Hoping for something to eat - atmosphere was great - easy going and friendly. The girl who looked after us was new but obviously trying hard and really cared. We were seated on a big table in front of a roaring fire - perfect on a cold day. Our roasts were delicious - the beef perfectly cooked and the crackling on the pork was top drawer. Good wine list with interesting bin - ends - we had a really good South African red. Lots of interesting whiskies and gins - will definitely be heading back!

Unbelievably bad service. If you are going to serve food, hire people who know how to serve food. Starter came out after an hour's wait. I started to eat it when the waitress said it was for another table, so she took it away! Second attempt at starters failed again with the wrong food. In total we waited almost 3 hours for main and it didn't turn up so we just left in the end. No updates, not even an offer for drinks. Disaster considering four to five years of visiting, won't be back.

After coming year on year for the last 4 years, I'm disappointed to say this time was dreadful. I wish I could comment on the food however it was never served, after a 2h 45minute wait with no apology or explanation from the serving team. The 2 starters they did serve were incorrect- a complete shambles.

We have visited this pub in the past for family get togethers as it a good mid way meeting point for us all. This time however, the service & food were definitely not up to usual standard. The place was over run with children, running about and being quite loud. We were greeted rather abruptly before being shown to our table where we ordered Sunday lunch. After about an hour’s wait, we asked where our lunch was, it was then served quite soon after but it was tepid. We had a lovely waiter who took our plates & returned with hot food & an offer of free drinks. We did then try to order dessert but after another long wait, gave up & left. Such a shame as we understand there are new owners here, just hope they get their service sorted out.

My wife and I have enjoyed many meals at The Chestnut Horse, it’s one of our favourite treats. We were therefore delighted to have received a voucher for a meal as a gift. However, upon phoning to book the meal, the pub had, changed hands. My wife very politely enquired as to whether the new owners would honour the voucher (that had been bought in good faith) and was told very abruptly that ‘it was absolutely ridiculous’ and that it wouldn’t be honoured. I fully understand the decision, but the lack of manners cannot be excused. Needless to say they have lost a customer!

We have enjoyed several lunch meetings here before with family, as this is halfway between where we live. We always had such a lovely warm welcome before, great food and great atmosphere. Things have changed unfortunately, along with the ownership we understand.

We met up with a friend at The Chestnut Horse intending to only stay for a few drinks and maybe a snack. We sat up at the bar and the barman basically just kept tempting us with interesting gins, wines and the odd negroni thrown in for good measure (I think my friend had some interesting ales along the way too but can't be sure!). As it was a midweek night it wasn't really busy but there was such a lovely, cosy atmosphere and we were made to feel so welcome by the owner and his staff. We ended up ordering burgers which were delicious and stayed until closing time - a brilliant, impromptu evening - lucky people of Easton.

We booked the Chestnut Horse as it was close to Winchester Christmas Market and it offered space for our motorhome stopover. We couldn't have received a warmer welcome from Andrew and his staff. He even offered to have us taken to the cathedral by Jamie his barman!

Went for dinner, so good, came back for lunch the following day! Had the trout and pizza, gorgeous food very generous portions. Very welcoming hosts and the Sunday roasts may have been the nicest we’ve had in a pub. Highly recommend, we will definitely be returning!

Staff of young girls running this tesco Costa into the ground. It's filthy. Not to mention arguing with visibly autistic adult over whether I needed a straw after I had politely said I needed one for my 'sippy cup' (what?!) then shouting a very sarcastic thank you at me after being so rude and talking to me like an idiot. Rude young staff obviously their first employment. But the response off this kid?! Try doing that on the street I mean come on. You won't get along in the real world, kid. You need to hire some adults.
