Excellent food - chief waiter was very rude and critical which totally spoiled what should have been an excellent birthday lunch. Needless to say we left disappointed and probably not to return. We had been supporters for many years from when they were at The Vienna Restaurant in Farnham

I visited the Chequers a few weeks ago for dinner with friends, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The pub had a cosy atmosphere, the food was delicious, and the service was attentive. However, there was one aspect of our visit that left us feeling slightly uncomfortable. Unfortunately, our evening was marred by an uncomfortable interaction between two staff members. While we were dining, we observed an older member of the staff behaving inappropriately towards a younger colleague. The hostility was evident. It was clear that the younger staff member was uncomfortable, and it detracted from the overall ambience of the establishment. Overall, despite the uncomfortable atmosphere caused by the staff interaction, The Chequers offers great food and service. Worth the visit!

I found The Chequers Inn by chance while working nearby, it looked quaint so I booked Sunday lunch for myself & the wife today 29th October. After reading the previous strange reviews I can only assume they were left in error or as a joke!? The pub / restaurant is lovely with so much old school character & charm which you don’t find these days, a refreshing change from the big brewery owned chains. Extensive menu with lots of fish dishes, I opted for a traditional Sunday roast beef, the wife had chicken schnitzel. With a decent, inexpensive wine list. We literally couldn’t fault it & look forward to returning again soon.

I took my mother for Sunday lunch. The food was good as always. However, when it came to pay, it was suggested to me that if I went round the back with the waiter, he would rip up the bill. As if! Found this incredibly insulting and I should have made a scene but felt very uncomfortable. Will not be able to return obviously.

We have been here many many times and generally have been positive Starched white table cloths, a comprehensive menu and well cooked and presented food That’s the positive The negative is the ( lack of )service Last Sunday was no exception We were shown to a table inside. No problem except that as it was a sunny day we asked to swap for a table under the front awning. We moved but the table we were given was right beside the main entrance so we swapped back and went inside. We were happy and it was smooth except Madam owner sarcastically said” Oh so you’ve changed your minds again”. I really don’t expect this Any organisation takes its culture from its leader. Surly sarcastic owner. Ditto service A great pity since the food is generally of a high standard Next time I shall treat Madam as an object of amusement and respond accordingly!!

I can only speak for myself, visiting family from Canada and made a last minute reservation for our final evening in Bentley. I had the shrimp curry and it was the best curry sauce I’ve ever eaten to date. The shrimps were also perfectly cooked. My brother in law really enjoyed his liver as well. It’s been a week since I’ve been home to Calgary and still craving the amazing curry. Can’t wait to go back to Checkers for an other meal.

The venue is still a delight. Sadly the food and service are not good. The food was extremely dull, the gravlax was ok; fresh but lacking real flavour. The cod, soggy, small, flavourless; almost as if it had come from a packet. The peas lamentable. If you can’t produce nice peas, something is truly wrong. There was no vegetarian option but they managed to throw together a vegetable curry. The service was curt, surly and non communicative. Had someone bothered to ask how the food was, I’d have told them. Definitely won’t be going back.

I echo the two latest reviews (Dolly and Bill F who posted in September and August respectively). The venue is a lovely quaint country establishment; that's the only positive comment I can make. I've been many times in pre-pandemic years. It's never been a happy place - the service has always been surly and the welcome non-existent. But the quality of food never failed to surpass that. However, when I took my young niece and her friend last month as a "special treat", I was appalled at the food served up to us. I could swear that my "Crispy Roasted Duck with an apricot & Cointreau sauce" was from a supermarket. There is no way it was prepared from scratch on the premises. I didn't want to spoil the girls' evening, so I held back from complaining. Until there's new management and a huge improvement in food quality, I won't return (from the landlord's response to Bill F's wife, the current management won't care).

Took my sister in law (and wife) to birthday dinner. Remembered this place used to be good for fish if you could ignore the rotten service. Hoped it had improved. Ignored by landlord when we arrived. Walked into restaurant. A waiter gave us a dirty look, looked at his watch and walked off to kitchen. Landlord appeared and took us to a table in the front outside. Music was so loud, we could not talk. Asked to be seated inside. No lights on, very dark, music as loud. Asked if they could turn it down but seemed they did not want to. My wife asked the landlord “Do you not want us here?”. Reply was “Suit yourself”. This establishment does not deserve to still be trading. Cannot understand the good reviews here and I am suspicious of them. The bad reviews ring true in my “lived experience” as we say these days. Hope to see new management and better days for this restaurant.

Great food here. Ordered sizzling prawns. Was told to be careful, that they were indeed sizzling. I know this of old, because I have sizzling prawns every time I eat at this restaurant. They looked great. I leaned back and waited for them to calm down. When I thought it was safe - after a minute or two, I reached for my fork. The boiling garlic butter spat in my eye and burned it. Not badly : 3 mm to the left and it might have been another matter. But it was bloody painful. The waiter, still at the table, had the grace to blush and offered me some ice. But no apology, no acknowledgement of what happened. Every other waiter there saw what had happened and knew my eye had been hurt. They looked over enough times at my table. I kept waiting for a staff member, the manager, someone to ask if I was okay, to apologise perhaps; nothing. After two admittedly gorgeous courses, I paid the bill, asked for the manager. I told her about the incident; she said I had been warned. She half apologised and when I mentioned that the staff had said nothing after my eye was burnt, she trivialised it by saying she would have them whipped later. When I said this wasn’t to be trivialised, she became more unpleasant. I am not a litigious person. I’m not interested in complaints for their own sake, or blaming a place for something I might have done because I wasn’t thinking or was being stupid. But I do like manners. I like the feeling that, if I am out for a special occasion at a good restaurant, my custom is important. Especially in a post lockdown world, where you need to support good places, local places. I have frequented this restaurant for nine years, in its current location and when it was situated in Farnham town centre. The food is always great. Such a pity. This is the first time I have ever left a bad review of any restaurant, but I just can’t let this go by. The manager behaved with an unbelievable arrogance and was I feel, unconscionably rude. I can’t bring myself to support this manager again, given her attitude.Such a pity, because the food is excellent - when it is not attacking you.

We had 2 tables so close to us that I I couldn't hear the conversation on our table.Throughout our meal, we had people from other tables who kept coming over to speak to the table to my right, they stank of cigarette smoke, talking really loudly with their mouths full of food. It was horrible. None of them were wearing masks whilst walking around & they should have stayed at their tables. None of the staff said a word!Lunch took 3 hours, at the end with no sign of the bill, my husband asked for the bill to specifically be given to his father, the waiter finally brought it & handed it to my husband & said to my father in law "he's getting this" so my husband had to pay it. It was really awkward & the waiter had no place to say this. I would not return. We'd said it was his 50th birthday & they did absolutely nothing for him. The sign in book was just names with no number requested for track & trace, people not asked to scan in.All in all very disappointing & not good value for a £200+ bill!!!

The Chequers has a beautiful under cover pergola, with the width of the front open to the road and countryside. It was because of this that I booked lunch on Thursday 6 May. On arrival the clear plasticised screening covering the front was firmly zipped down and I was ushered into inside dining. This was totally unacceptable and a risk to all who dined. I was told "diners were cold, hence the screens being down"We ate at a small high table outside (in a light shower). The food was good, but I was paying for a service that was denied me. The sign for Best pub prize is from 2015 and I’m assuming that they still think that’s the case- take it from me Nicola you are far from that now. Also- all main meals come as one item and everything down to potato and veg is at an additional cost. I have eaten at the Chequers frequently (most recently yesterday) and have often recommended the food despite consistently average service. But never again after our experience today.Despite booking some 12 days ago, after a wait of some minutes in the road we were charmlessly shown to a very heavy wooden table with high chairs at the back. One of our party of 4 has a bad back and the seating was wholly unsuitable even if she could have got in which was only possible if other diners got up. We asked to move one of the unoccupied tables with normal chairs or even a table in the garden and were refused point blank. The 'Manager' was asked to help and her manner was completely unacceptable, unapologetic and dismissive but nothing compared to that of the rudeness of the owner/chef's wife who is completely unsuited to be front of house. In all my life I have never been told to 'leave the premises' before but on this occasion I was only too happy to (hence not being able to grade the food or value below). We have eaten well here in the past at a price but this place is seriously let down by its management and service. By the way tables for 4 were being crammed with 6 people and the tables are too close together. It takes more than good food to make a decent restaurant. A friendly attitude makes for a pleasant ambience and you won't certainly get that here until someone gets a major grip.Anyway we had a delicious late lunch at home. Sadly it's Goodbye Chequers.

Despite clearly stating all over the website that weddings are a big part of their trade, I have never been treated so rudely when enquiring into a wedding venue. Owners aggressive, rude and totally uninterested in any business. Certainly would not recommend even thinking about this venue.

We generally enjoyed our first time with you; however we were disappointed by the Beef Stoganoff my wife ordered. She like I was expecting a traditional Stroganoff recipe based on a sour cream and French mustard sauce; what was served was paprika or chilli based and not at all enjoyable. The menu dies not give an indication of this style of preparation either. The server who cleared our table saw the unfinished meal and asked if we’d enjoyed it. We explained the above and that we hadn’t enjoyed it.I expected something to be said at the time of us paying our bill; but no feedback or discount on the bill was offered for that meal. Shame because otherwise we enjoyed the experience. Strangely there is no way to provide this type of review discreetly to them, as they dont seem to publish their email address online.

Restaurant came highly recommended, but after a fantastic starter range, the food became bland and over priced. We also ordered another bottle of wine to be told it wasn’t available so we had to switch, not ok. After speaking to service staff that decide to walk away when we spoke about issues with the food we were meet with staff that decided our option didn’t matter. We had saved up a lot of money to go to this restaurant tonight and we were left with a very sour taste! Make sure if you order the £30 sole you are ready for average with minimal flavour. Disappointed.

Visited for a birthday treat with two relatives. Both the service and food were good however some of the meals are very pricey for a pub. I had a special of sea bass with prawns and anchovies for about £18 which came with no vegetables or potatoes. A side of green beans is £4 so if you want some carbs too it starts adding up! The fish and chips for £14 represented much better value for money, their fish and chips are amazing. There were only a couple of tables in that lunchtime but we were sat right next to each other and unfortunately just as I was about to start my dessert the table next to us were served a dish that absolutely reeked of garlic. This is fine while you're eating starters/mains but not dessert! Maybe they could think about spacing people out a bit or toning down the use of garlic in some dishes because it almost ruined my mince pie and custard. We sat in the outside/inside area at the fine which was fine, had a nice atmosphere and I'm sure is very pleasant in the evenings. I would return but would choose my dishes more carefully next time. If I'm paying £18 in a pub for a meal I expect veg to be included.

I have been to this restaurant several times with family. Generally the food is of a very high standard. The fillet steak with green peppercorn sauce is excellent. The schnitzel (covered inexplicably in garlic and liquid butter) is rather poor by comparison. The service is good and there is a lot more to this establishment than the country pub it appears by the exterior.

Covid security precautions in place and observed. Friendly welcome and exceptional service from two young ladies throughout the evening. they knew the menu inside out, were personable, pleasant and really understood service - A real asset for the owners. Excellent menu with a really good range of fresh fish specials. Reasonable prices, all the dishes arrived promptly and delivered on flavour as well as portion sizes. If you are in the area would thoroughly recommend booking a table here.

On arrival we were sat on a table where our chairs were touching the next tables'.A litte ironic when there is a sign on the wall that say to keep 1m apart. We asked to move to an empty table but again, the restaurant was fun and no allowance had been made for distancing. We have been visiting the Vienna for many years and do feel that the quality of the food has lessened. We had steak, cod and stroganoff and all noticed how salty the food was.Restaurant was very hot and we had to ask 3 times for a bottle of water. Not great for the cost, was expecting better service and quality.

Food and service excellent but pricey. Quoted £5 for extra bread with moules mash with lambs liver would be £3.50 making this a £21 dish and all other “sides” (most of which you would expect to come as standard with the dish) £3.50. 2.5 pints of bitter and one soft drink cost £16 - again, pretty pricey!Web site needs major amendment as it suggests a dog friendly attitude but in spite of this dogs are only permitted in the garden and there is no food service in the garden.

This is our second time, first time was excellent. The Inn is beautiful inside and out. The servce is above average, polite and attentive. Unfortunately the food did not live up to expectation. First course, tomato and mozzarrella salad excellent, the devilled whitebait was was just plain with no flavour. Mains, plaice was unseasoned and bland, the minted peas were just plain frozen peas. This was well below avereage. On a health and safety note, the new main exit is unlit and very dangerous, lighting is required before you get sued for an accident. not sure that we will be returning unless there is some improvement.

Made a reservation last minute. The food here is amazing. Lots of choice. We had beef wellington, sea bass , steak and liver. All were beautifully presented and delicious? Service was great! Not sure why people complain about not being welcome. The staff are doing their best. We have always enjoyed coming here for the food. And every time it has been consistently fantastic!

Booked here for a birthday (well in advance) and were really disappointed we were not actually IN the restaurant, but outside in a tented part at the front of the pub. This is our second visit this year and the first time was much better than this. The order was taken by the landlady who was polite enough but not engaging at all. Barely spoke and did not enter into any kind of small talk. Meals are about £18 + ahead but that does NOT include any vegetables - which are all priced at £4.50. I think when you order a MEAL it should be a meal and not the main part? It was very expensive for what we had and for our experience.

Stopped here today while on a lovely country walk, didn’t receive a welcoming impression from the staff however we were starving so decided to stay. The food was delicious, we cannot fault that other than being fairly overpriced, but the rest of the experience left much to be desired. The staff seemed disinterested and not very attentive, and the overall clientele were not to our taste. Maybe because we didn’t arrive in a Range Rover wearing bodywarmers, safe to say we won’t be returning...

We parked across the road from the Chequers aiming to go for a walk and returning after the walk for a drink at the Chequers. We set off up the road for a walk to be assailed by a man (presumably the landlord) in a 4x4 who told us in no uncertain terms that we had parked on private property and he needed that space for lunch guests in spite of the fact that the main car park was completely empty. It seemed to make no difference to this most unfriendly character that we were planning to have a drink in the restaurant after our walk.I think this most arrogant and unfriendly landlord could well benefit from a course in customer relations.

As with several other reviews, the food although good is overpriced. Before Covid, we dined out at least once a month and now try to avoid Pubs/Restaurants that charge for each individual item of the main course. We also felt that a proper list of allergens should be displayed on the menus.Having come out of "lockdown", we have grabbed the chance to visit several restaurants both locally and more recently in the Isle of Wight during a long weekend stay. It was a little disconcerting to see that none of the staff serving food at the Chequers, were wearing facemasks or visors. This was not the case at any other venues recently visited. It was mentioned to staff but no real reason was given for the lack of PPE. Perhaps the owner of this establishment should be challenged by more customers as long as this virus is with us.

This was to be our first meal out since lockdown. A real treat, especially as I do all the cooking in our house. My husband booked this for our family. It was unfortunate that our table backed right onto the entrance where customers would wait (potentially less than a metre away) to be seated, and my husband's head was right under the hand sanisitser dispenser mounted on the wall by the door (luckily no one decided to use it while we were sitting there!). We did ask if we could move to another table nearby but were told that was booked and nothing else was said. Most of the staff were actually very pleasant and helpful, except the one who we had issue with previously. Time has not softened her unfortunately. Although it took about 40 minutes to have our food order taken, the starters were perfectly OK. In fact on the whole the two mains were pretty good too, except mine. It was not helped by the fact that the waiter accidentally tipped my plate as he was putting it on the table and the buttery juices hit the deck. Not the floor though, unfortunately. They actually landed squarely into my handbag and were soaked up by my cardigan. I have to say that for £27, I would have preferred a single thicker piece of fish, rather than two rather thin pieces, and I would definitely have preferred the skin to have been coloured in the butter as it was rather slimy (I thought meunière meant dusted with flour and fried in butter). Then it appeared on the bill as £29.95. We didn't quibble any of it, we just didn't order desserts and left, £160 poorer and feeling very flat about it. Won't be eating out again for a while and will donate to the Trussell Trust instead. Not once did anyone ask how our meal was. It all sounds rather petty but for an expensive restaurant that we can walk to, we were desperate for it to turn out to be better than our last visit, and somewhere to celebrate our first meal out. We won't be returning again I'm afraid.

We arrived in the lay-by opposite The Chequers armed with 'The Walks near Farnham' booklet which recommended that we park there. Our intention was to undertake a fairly long ramble and then take advantage of the take-away service being provided by the pub in these Covid-19 times. No sooner had we parked, when an individual came out of the pub, bawling at the top of his voice telling us in no uncertain terms that we could not park there. He was remonstrating in such an arrogant fashion that his conduct was not appropriate to the circumstances. I politely explained that I had previously been a customer at his establishment and that it was our intention to return there after our walk. He did begrudgingly allow us to leave our car there but his attitude was so off-hand that our encounter was most unpleasant. Is he simply against walkers? From reading other reviews, it would seem that this individual possesses bad manners and he vents his spleen as he sees fit on whomever he chooses to target. On the plus side, our walk through the delightful Hampshire countryside was first-class but when we arrived back at our point of departure we could not bring ourselves to using the services of this condescending individual. We, therefore, drove away and took refreshments elsewhere. It also appears that the person in question, who does indeed drive a 4x4, learns little from life as a June 2019 review, in which the reviewer also awards one-star rating, is a carbon copy of what happened to us.

An unexpected delight in the Hampshire countryside. The lovely white tablecloths set the scene for an enjoyable meal. The service is excellent. Overall the food was good. My stroganoff was far from the best I’ve had; tasting more like goulash but very palatable nevertheless. The desserts were all delicious and wine selection excellent. It’s such a great venue I’d definitely go again but try something else!
