The Chequers Inn in South Gloucestershire

We have persevered with the Chequers over our 15 years of living just a few hundred metres away. We popped in midweek to support our local restaurant despite some very poor service & meals over the years ! This was our final time of eating here ! We done the midweek special two courses, at this point I want to add that nowhere on adverts or menus does it say small plates or the meals will be reduced size ! The starters came and they were pleasant and as advertised, the main came and we had mussels and the steak & chips! I didn’t expect greatness or Michelin star food but I didn’t expect a children’s portion ! It was insulting ! The waiter almost threw the food down as he probably suspected I’d have mentioned this ! No one came to ask until we had finished, which took a couple of minutes. I was asked was the food ok and I said no I am hungry, the mussels consisted of 16 mussels yes sixteen. No bread to mop up the few tablespoons of sauce with them, the steak was exactly 3 inches by 3 inches this was served with three strands of rocket and approximately 20 fries! There is no justice for insulting people with servings of this size!! An 8 year old would have left hungry even if they are both meals ! They eventually after a silly resistance to our displeasure and a minor argument agreed to charge for one meal and this was only because I said I’d refuse to pay ! Insulting and ludicrous way to treat customers !

Well... this place certainly needs some attention. The atmosphere is okay, it was deserted (Saturday night) so nica and quiet, if that works for you? The big problem was that the steaks were served cold... party of 8, four had steaks that needed to go back... they were cooked as requested, but cold on the plate when served. These were then taken away and eventually warmer steaks delivered. Unfortunately two of the four had gone from lovely and pink to overcooked and tired! Still, surely the third time should see it sorted... nope! The two were barely classified as warm - but, when needs must and you've been sat down for 2 hrs, and mains are placed in front of you, you eat what's given you - or I do (especially as the rest of the part had finished theirs LONG ago...). The flavours were there... the temperature was the problem, some served on cold plates, some on hot. Not sure what's going on in the kitchen, but it's this last stage on the pass that's letting the venue down... or did this time. Shame... the steaks were refunded, but an important and infrequent family celebration marred. Won't be returning here I'm afraid.

Our family meal out tonight was very disappointing. I am not normally one to write reviews but I feel on this occasion I have too. None of the food was hot, it was either luke warm or cold!! The 4 steak meals went back as all were cold. 2 then came back re-cooked and were average at best. The 2 flat irons went back as they were then cooked far too much. 3rd time was the best out of the 3 attempts but still only barely warm! For a family meal out to celebrate my grandads birthday where some family members have had to travel from another part of the country it was very disappointing. The server did not check in with the final attempt of the meals and I think felt embarrassed by it all. The service was however not great and we had to ask to order more drinks. Its such a shame as we have been previously and loved it but now feel we will not return and also be telling our friends who we know visit also not to bother going back! We did wonder why on a Saturday night it was so quiet! Toilets also were messy and unclean!

We had a lovely family Sunday roast which was excellent. The food was amazing and perfectly cooked. We were looked after by Max who was extremely efficient, courteous and friendly. There were 10 of us but nothing was too much trouble, making our experience at the Chequers wonderful. We would highly recommend the Sunday lunch and we shall be returning very soon!

Enjoyable as usual. A new menu for us. A bit quiet, however, food was good and the staff attentive without being intrusive. We will be back

Just got back from the Chequers Inn where we had one of the best meals we have had recently. Five of us had very different meals and they were all delicious and cooked to perfection. My friend is gluten intolerant and she had a good choice. The service was also very friendly and very attentive. Will definitely goo again soon and can highly recommend.

There were 12 of us total with 11/12 having a roast. The service was really good, everyone friendly and welcoming so no faults there. Our drinks came out quick however our food was disappointing. The pork and beef were both very fatty and the crackling wasn’t great. The meat string was left in one of the pork dishes, the parsnips were rock solid, gravy was watery and the roast potatoes tasted reheated. The Yorkshire puddings also tasted very dry and hardly any seasoning on the meal. One member ordered the fish and chips and again this meal was very average and nothing too special, the batter was very crispy to the point it just broke off of the fish, chips looked better than they tasted and the peas/curry sauce just had a bit of a peculiar taste to them. We were hoping that a pudding would at least make up for the meal however it sadly only had 3 things on which weren’t to any of our tastes so we had to pass, which was a shame. All in all a bit of a disappointing meal out as the location of the place is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately I don’t think we will be returning.

A lovely spot by the river Avon. A warm welcome from Harvey. Harvey was very proactive and very friendly. The food was great. We had extras of pigs in blankets (4 in serving) and truffle Cauliflower cheese which was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend for Sunday Roast.

We arranged to meet with the family to celebrate a birthday over Sunday lunch. Superb service from Harvey who looked after us brilliantly. Good, solid Sunday roasts. Filling and hearty. Lovely view of the river and a relaxed atmosphere.

Lovely place for a very tasty dinner. The atmosphere is always cosy and welcoming and the staff are friendly and helpful. We were served by Max who made sure we were happy and looked after. Overall a lovely place for a meal, or even just a few drinks. Also the triple cooked chips are to die for!

Mother’s Day family lunch. Firstly the young man who was our waiter was brilliant, he was attentive and appeared interested in making our experience good. The roast beef was fatty and not much gravy (personal preference for a dinner swimming in gravy). Roast potatoes lovely. Dinner not nice enough to say I recommend it, but nice enough not to complain about it. won’t go for Sunday lunch again but would go for a mid week tea as there was a nice atmosphere.

It was the second year coming here for Mothers Day and again it did not disappoint! As a table of 10, staff were really attentive, food and drinks arrived quickly. Everybody at our table loved their food, which was all plentiful and filling. The beef sunday roast was particularly lovely! Our waiter Harvey was great and gave special attention to our golden retriever, who loved her experience and will definitely be returning!

Disappointing. Promised much but under delivered. Booked a table for 2.30pm but told diners had over run. Accepted another table but then told original table available in 5 mins. Eventually sat at table at 3pm having prompted staff. No one came to take order so had to go and ask. By time food arrived it was close to 3.30pm. Burger ordered without elements but came with and had to send back - took a full 20 minutes before it was tabled. Fish and Chips was really poor quality. Haddock ? and style over substance - plumped up with batter to make it presentable. Staff really polite but service slow and needed a lot of prompting. Overall won't be going back. Shame because a really nice location but failed to deliver.

How can they charge the prices they do on the food with some of the rubbish served up is beyond me. £18 for a pie which was gristly, served on a little bowl, literally could have been served as a child’s portion. Tasteless, gristly and hardly any veg or mushrooms inside. 1/10 As for service, waited at the bar 2 times for around 4-5 mins before someone arrived to serve us. No apology for the wait just hardly any words spoken between me saying “diet coke” and it being served by the lady behind the till. Our table was NOT cleared of the plates and glasses that were left for ages, so we actually ended up clearing the food plates ourselves because nobody was around to ask. No cocktails available, only some nasty tasting drink that we tried. No mojitos, no alternatives which is shockingly poor for a pub with such huge potential. Overall just really poor, the pub has massive potential with its fantastic location. Just a shame nobody can make the great potential a reality with super food and top notch service needed.

Unfortunately I have to write a bad review. I don't like doing this especially with the hard climate we are in at the moment with restaurants and pubs closing down. But feel it must be said in the hope they take it on board and up their game. I booked online for a party of 9 originally for my partners 30th birthday. We arrived but had to tell them 1 of the party couldn't make it. We was shown to our table which wasn't made for a party of 9. We was asked if we would like this table or seeing as we have 8 we could go to another table. I said this one would do. So I had to help put 2 tables together. The manager started helping with all the cutlery and chairs. Then wandered off leaving me and the party to finish arranging the table. The rest of the party arrived. We then ordered the drinks at the bar which took a while as no one was there to serve. Eventually got our drinks. Sat down at the table. Then chose our food from the limited expensive menu and ordered at the bar. 3 of the party ordered beef shin pie. When it came it was small for what the price was. Served in a bowl. A couple of minutes later the waiter arrived asking if everything was alright with the meal. We all initially said it was fine. As not tried the pie as of yet. When we did get round to eating it. It was like chewing on a leather boot. It was disgusting. I would of sent it back for a replacement but the other 2 said theirs tasted the same. I didn't want anything else on the limited menu as there was nothing I really fancied and I was hungry so just ate it. My mum couldn't eat hers as it was just gristle. Really un-impressed especially with how much it cost. The kids menu was extremely limited 3 meals available. My sons sausages was overcooked. My step daughter only ordered chips as there was nothing else she liked. We all finished most of our food. Then waited around 10-15 mins for someone to collect our plates. In the end, I cleared it for all of us so we could do the birthday cake. The manager bought the birthday cake out and then spoke to us. Asking us if we had a nice time. We said it was OK. But explained about the pies. She offered to clear our £10 tab as good will gesture. Its such a shame as its such a nice pub and I have had ok meals previously. Maybe they was short staffed. I don't know but when your spending good money you expect a better service. Unfortunately won't be going back. The pub has potential. It needs to lower its prices and have more pub grub on offer. Hate leaving bad reviews but felt I needed too

When we booked for lunch for my wife’s 50 birthday I asked for a window seat but when we got there we were told no space was available even though had called to check they sat us at the dark back corner. Service was very slow through out the meal. Asked for some extra gravy and sauce for our children when it did turn up half there meal was gone. Could not complain about the food it was really good. Just a very big let down.

Lovely, friendly pub with a great atmosphere. Five of us went for Sunday roast and the food was fab. Service was great - thanks Harvey! We had one of the window tables. The pub has large windows overlooking the Avon river, which is great for people watching as there are a number of canal barges moored up outside. Lots of parking available for visitors. The road down is narrow and would be a squeeze for large vehicles, but part of the adventure. We'd definitely make a return visit.

I had fish and chips I don't think it was worth the price £18, chips I had was dry you could count the chips on the plate ten in fact the fish wasn't any better more batter than fish,don't think I will be eating here again

We have been before and it's always been fine. Sadly our experience this time was far from good. We had an awful pie with not much meat and lots of gristle a few chips sitting on top of something watery and celeriac or cabbage. 19.00 pound for that dinner and it was tasteless and grey!! Whilst we were there the person behind us sent his food back!! We ordered ice cream for the baby it was cheap and sweet!! I should have complained at the time but we were guests and didn't want to cause a fuss. A lot of people have since told me that it's gone down hill. Hate giving a bad review but honestly it was one of the worst meals I've had in in a long time. You need to up your game, it's not exactly cheap!!

After queuing for 20 minutes to get to the bar I was told that the lagers weren’t great because the cellar couldn’t cope with the hot weather but a particular one was ok…. Wrong !! It was lifeless and warm. After being seated the waitress said there was no table service to order food and that you had to join the queue ( now snaking out the door) and order it at the bar!!
