We love this place; as a pub it's very warm and welcoming, it's delightful inside and out and the staff are very polite and friendly. As a restaurant it's amazing, it serves truly excellent food and clearly has a very talented chef who takes pride in his dishes. We thoroughly recommend it for a place to go for a quiet drink or for a special meal.

Popped in for some supper with the family. Lovely evening so we sat outside in the garden which is beautifully cared for, peaceful, lots of well spaced tables and umbrellas. Prompt drinks service, great range of food including veggie options. Legendary Chequers burger and fish and chips , all freshly cooked. Excellent attentive friendly service even though they were busy. Great evening

We just had the most delicious Sunday lunch. Beef was tender and perfectly cooked...generous portion too. Chicken was also cooked perfectly. Loads of sides and all fresh local produce....spinach, carrots, parsnips ...and special cauliflower cheese. Number 1 ship st (Oxford) runs this now, and it's fantastic. Staff were lovely too. The place was full of happy customers.

Lovely pub, very friendly atmosphere, on the day we dined the garden was perfect. We had the curry, which was nice but lacked any bite, it could have done with some chilli flavouring just to pep it up. The rhubarb cheesecake wasn't good at all. Beer was great (Gravity)

Extremely noisy in the main room, service is haphazard at best. We had read reviews and knew going in to order drinks right as we were seated, however food came in such random ways and so appalingly sporadically we will NEVER return. Being seated in a snug corner with benches more narrow than a church pew we rejected. Then we were seated somewhat begrudgingly next to a table of 15(!!) people. A number of them then proceeded to yell up & down the table. We'd diven by there many times and thought we should give it a go, never again!

Planning a circular walk from Frieth (passing through Skirmett, Turville and Fingest) I decided to have a lunch stop at The Chequers. Fantastic 17th C building, warm welcome, sat next to a nice fire, excellent toasted sandwich and bowl of soup, nice friendly service. What more could one ask for? Thank you, and I’ll visit again. BTW, the walk was great, too!

We visited The Chequers for the first time this weekend and have to say that it’s our favourite pub in the Hambleden Valley. The food was fantastic (best roast that I’ve tasted other than my own) and we were very full after two courses as the portions were generous. The atmosphere was just what you want from a rural village pub. Cecilia was an amazing waitress/host who was warm, engaging and genuinely wanted to ensure all guests had a great time. We will definitely return!

Firstly I can’t praise the staff enough. We were with a group of 11 and had ore-ordered and they had no problem with me changing mine. I heard so much about this place I was expecting too much. The cheese was seriously the poorest I’ve ever had in a pub/restaurant. For a restaurant charging 12.5% service I would expect gourmet food. There was a large piece of very ordinary cheddar. A so small piece of Stilton that it never made it to the blue/green veins. An average size piece of goat’s cheese which was rather rubbery than creamy. My shepherd pie was fine. My husband had steak and crème brûlée and it was excellent so that is why I’m giving four stars. I just want the management to read this and improve the quality of their cheese. Instead of Stilton and cheddar one could be replaced by a Brie or a Camembert. You are so close to a lovely creamery at Nettlebed where you could buy some delicious cheeses and help the local economy.

My friends and I enjoyed dinner at The Chequers Inn. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The decor made the restaurant feel cosy and relaxing. The food was very good. The mussels were huge and fresh, the burger was yummy. One of my friends ordered the gnocchi and said it was delicious but had a bit too much butter sauce for her liking. It wasn't too busy when we had dinner but the tables were quite close together, so I would think if it was full, it may be a bit noisy. Overall, we did enjoy our visit here and would recommend.

Ten of us enjoyed an amazing Sunday lunch with friends & family. The food was clearly cooked with the best ingredients, love, and attention to detail. Staff gave permission to bring a specially-themed birthday cake. The wine menu set The Chequers Fingest apart from anywhere else, however. You could see that the wines are chosen by someone who knows their trade: even seemingly "ordinary" wines like sauvignon blanc and merlot were stunning - clearly from carefully selected growers, not just picked on price out of a wholesale catalogue.

I come here regularly as it is a local and always think it is right to support them. But its hard, the food is great and the best out of many of the local pubs. But the past three times I have been there after asking for the bill i have waited one time 10 mins (which is fine and average) the other time ( 1 HOUR !!!) and the other time about 45 Mins. this isn't an over exaggeration. One time the waiter we asked for the bill obviously finished her shift and went home telling no one about us. Then when one of them realised and apologizes and offered to remove the drinks from the bill when he came back and looked at the bill he forgot and went back to change it. He came back after asking a colleague to do it and once again didn't remove them. We said its fine an offered to pay the meal in full as its what a respectable person should do.

This is a family run pub with a sublime team of staff to support. The menu is always changing, the food is exactly as it says, ....... full of flavour and presented beautifully. If you have a space for dessert go for it.... Chris ‘s desserts are quite something ..... esp the deconstructed crumble ! I can highly recommend the crispy lamb starter and truffle macaroni cheese ...... not forgetting the amazing roasts smoked on the Big Green Egg (quite something if you’ve not encountered an UBER bbq before)...... and ..... one cannot forget Jaxon’s awesome pizzas..... don’t forget to ask for extra chilli on the pepperoni ! The drinks always refreshing and perfectly presented with correct glasses, right amount of ice and a wine list that will entail a perfect match to whatever uou are eating. The pub clearly shows every effort has been made to keep their patrons safe during this pandemic. Tables, toilets, handles are clearly sanitised as we saw them do it three times during this particular visit. The team out front is efficient, attentive and ...... most of all .... they are happy. They clearly all enjoy their work which is a bonus.... so many times I eat out and the team just seem to go through the motions without bothering to smile. I always look forward to dining here and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting or living in the area. Thank you Team Chequers ...... can’t wait to return.

We went for mid-week lunch in the garden - the setting is great, the tables nicely spaced on the huge lawn so it was safe and relaxed. However, the service was so slow despite there only being about 6 tables there and the food - when it finally came - was hugely overpriced for what we had. Assorted bread with dipping oil for starters was pretty much a plate of brown and white toast. The fish and chips were ok - saved by the light as a feather batter on the fish - but soggy, grassy chips and peas mashed with neat sugar I think! The CFC (nice play on words) sounded great but, in reality, a KFC might have been better - the chicken was soggy without any of the crispy, crunchy coatings promised and again, greasy chips. We didn't bother with dessert. Such a shame and for just four drinks (two of them soft), some 'toast' and a main course each we spent £75.00! Definitely not worth the money.

Six of us decided to do a walk from the Ordnance Surveys circular walks series, starting and finishing at Ibstone. We decided to have lunch at Fingest and booked the Chequers a few days in advance. They were great at responding to my emails about gluten-free options, track and trace, general directions. We arrived a full half-hour early but the staff took it in their stride and were able to find us a table. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was wonderful. Between the six of us we had the fish and chips, the lamb and the venison sausage and mash, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their choice. The fish and chips was among the best I've ever had. The batter on the cod was light and tasty, the fish itself moist and cooked to perfection. A pint of Brakspear's Gravity was the perfect accompaniment. Just can't fault the experience at all. The walk was also wonderful, and highly recommended. It's in Ordnance Survey Outstanding Circular Walks in the Chilterns and it's just short of 8 miles long through beautiful valleys and woodland.

This is a lovely pub in a very pretty part of the countryside, and the garden has glorious views. The chicken bacon and Caesar salad was quite magnificent, huge and rather pricey at £18 but probably the best one I’ve ever had. The garden was very busy and the atmosphere was good, the service friendly. Only two niggles. One, the only alcohol-free beer was a lager; I wish pubs would stock an alcohol-free bitter too. And also, it took 45 minutes to pay and leave after we’d finished. We had to ask three times for the bill and when it finally came it was wrong. But I suspect that this was the first big weekend since pubs opened up again and with new staff and a very busy trade a few problems are bound to arise. The food was absolutely marvellous.

I searched for a pub for Sunday lunch as was in the area and must have booked about 4 weeks in advance. The web site says it's the best kept secret! So thought let's go and try this place. On arrival , at 12.00 we were given a table for 6 (only 2 of us) right by entrance and next to men's toilet. We were first in virtually. Sat down , surrounded by soft cushions which when questioned later apparently get cleaned when they have time, definitely not covid-19 friendly. Choice was roast beef or roast venison, an unusual selection. So beef it was. It came within 10 mins and a very odd selection of veg, including pumpkin and kale, no parsnip or sprouts! And then aarg the beef was cold. So the lady said it can be heated up, but said no, fresh plates and a new meal. Came back within 5 mins and was hot. Due to the seating location we constantly heard men inn the toilets and had to put our coats on as frozen with door opening and closing with other people arrivingBy 12.45 we had paid the bill and left. So much for a leisurely Sunday lunch! I wouldn't return or recommend it.Also lots of animal heads over the walls

A beautiful little country pub with rustic decor and friendly service. I emailed ahead to check vegan options were available and they were. But upon arrival there were none on the menu, so i asked and was told i could have stir fried veg or a roast without the meat. I went for the roast. I got a huge plate of carrots and green beans and a few roast potatoes with some gravy. It was tasty enough, and i was happy to eat it - but if you want a pub that serves vegan food rather than just 'normal' food with half the ingredients removed to make it vegan, it might not be your first choice. I will go back - but i hope the menu will improve a little.

A pleasant evening catching up with my sister after lockdown isolation. All the tables were outside and well spaced. It was an 'eat out to help out' evening and it seemed as if they had underestimated the number of people they would have to serve and as a consequence they were short staffed and it took a long time for the food to be served. All the staff were very pleasant but were clearly stressed by the situation. The food was great, we had fish and chips, a burger and a caesar salad and all the plates were clean when we finished. As a local pub for a family member we will return and hopefully the service will then be back to it's normal efficient and really pleasant standard.

For a lovely pub it’s a shame that the female member of staff who was taking food orders last night (1st August) was indescribably rude. Firstly she came across (when there was a huge queue to get a drink) that she was more interested in chatting to her mate behind the bar. Secondly when we asked where to order she grunted and looked very much down on us. We came for my Mums 50th birthday and she made just about every effort to be rude. My father went to the bar and waited 20mins for a beer in which time the food came out. I asked her if she could possibly serve my father so his food wouldn’t get cold to which she laughed and walked off. As a person who came to your pub as a surprise for my mum I was disgusted with her attitude. Consistently unprofessional and generally couldn’t have cared less. The girl who brought the food out was lovely but the girl behind the bar was rushed off her feet while the lad in the blue shirt casually cantered round the tables all evening with a clipboard. Poor show folks. Poor show. If you appreciate good service then I recommend avoiding at all costs. Also - not sure what COVID-19 guidelines are in place? We were there 3 hours in which time 4 families had one table on turn over to which it was cleaned once. I’m disappointed we stayed for food. Upsetting as my family came up for my mums 50th and no consideration was given to even be polite. Maybe you would be in better control if you take the approach that most local pubs have with a table service rather than 20 people stood in a queue for food and 15 people queuing for a drink in the same space. Oh dear.

Im not sure how to phrase this without sounding over critical .. the pub is set in beautiful surroundings in a stunning village. The inside. Although traditional was clean and well kept. The food was as expected. A good quality offering with proper roast spuds. The lack of choice for a Sunday Menu was disappointing. No lamb pork or turkey. But the beef was good! I had the mushroom soup and coming from a background of 30yrs in this industry was blatantly obvious to me to be a powder mix. It was too watery. Im afraid at £7 i was disappointed. Service was excellent with polite and friendly staff. Overall. Yes id go back but ive definately had better offering for sinilar money. One Criticism. Outside the car park looked like a scrapyard. Quite surprising since the vehicles in the car park showed a high wealth clientele .. hopefully over winter things will improve

Looking at the other previous positive reviews I'm wondering if this restaurant has recently changed hands? A friend and I dined at The Chequers Inn recently. We decided to try it out as so many of the Chilterns gastro-pubs seem to have gone downhill (metaphorically not literally). Its setting is simply beautiful in the lovely little village of Fingest. Inside it looks great - really characterful and cosy, so we hopefully opened the menu and...it felt like we'd gone back to the 1970s. I checked my trousers but I wasn't wearing flares. There was ham, egg and chips, fish and chips, burger and chips, macaroni cheese (without chips I think), the usual steaks etc and the veg was steamed or microwaved. I looked at it again and again in disbelief, partly because the area around Fingest is stuffed with fairly wealthy sophisticated people who would expect great food - Peter Jones is a local. Tim Rice lives just down the road. They were also doing pizza in the garden and the soup of the day was Tomato. What an incredible waste of a beautiful place! My main course was just about acceptable but pretty insipid and I had rice pudding and something as a dessert. You can always tell a poor dessert because it tastes too sweet and this really tasted sweet. As for cost, it's not expensive and nor should it be. The service was okay.I've been a fan of Chilterns dining since 2003. However, as I said, most of the once great restaurants in the area seem to be in decline and I don't know why - surely not something else to blame on Brexit:)

We are a group of walkers and have been to The Chequers a number of times and have always enjoyed our visits. However, our enjoyment during our last visit was someway short of what we had come to expect. The menu was very limited and the portions were very meagre and the service was a little lacking. Due to the size of the portions, when asked if we wanted any sauces, by the time the sauces arrived, some had finished their meals. So overall nothing to stop you visiting but there again, nothing to make you want to come back, other than the beautiful location.

I spend a lot of time here, and in my opinion, you can't beat it - especially when the sun is shining and you can sit in the beautiful beer garden in this gorgeous piece of English countryside and enjoy a glass of chilled wine and a pizza! It's family-friendly - I often bring my kids down here - and the food is always great. The staff are fantastic and it's a proper local boozer as well as somewhere to bring the family for a smart meal as a special treat. Must admit the wood-fired pizzas are my favourite things on the menu though!

Finished off our walk with a Sunday lunch here. A busy pub but didn’t wait long for our drinks and food. Good service. 3 of us had the roast beef - good size portions and 1 Moroccan lamb dish - tasty. Room for desserts too -Apple pie and white blonde. Lovely way to spend the afternoon.

Been here three or four times - it’s a lovely spot and a great dog-friendly garden. But can’t say we’ve ever left feeling “wow”. To be honest the only reason we return is that none of the other pubs in the Hambleden valley are any better and many are worse. The walks around the area are great, and it’s nice to break one with a stop at a pub. Sadly, when we last came, the ploughman’s - that staple of great pub grub & on the sample menu on line - had been taken off, seemingly in favour of a cheese and pickle sandwich - a doorstep of lovely bread but with a very mean portion of grated cheese and little more than a smear of pickle.

We dropped in as we were passing and were welcomed in by the staff. They went out of their way to accommodate us as we didn't have a reservation. A lovely quaint pub in the middle of nowhere! We were served quickly and the food was very good, but a little expensive. We would certainly eat here again if in the area. Much more welcoming than the hotel we were staying in! Plenty of parking spaces.

The interior of this pub is beautiful and the food matches. the menu is a little basic but all the food is done well and delicious. Great for couples or larger groups.

We booked a large party of 30 or so. Due to the number of guests we preselected from a smaller menu but everything was lovely and everyone I spoke to enjoyed their food. The staff were on hand to keep us suitably plied with wine throughout the night and nothing was too much trouble.

Stopped for lunch here on a circular walk, we were just after the kitchen cut off time for serving food but Jaxon agreed to fit our orders in. Really good burger and quality ham, egg and chips, in fact the food and ambience here was so good we returned for dinner. The lamb was amazing, Jaxon gave us both a drink on the house for stopping by for lunch and dinner. The bar staff were great, friendly and attentive and even gave us a lift back to our hotel as it was now too dark to continue on foot!! Amazing! Thank you Jaxon, Kevin & Gemma for a great evening, we will be back! Shelley & Lee

From the opening of the front door into we were warmly welcomed by friendly staff and quickly served. We had a great meal, food hot and tasty. Menu not extensive but something for everyone in our party. Had read some of the reviews and surprised by negatives comments. It's a good honest pub that clearly has a good chef and serves great food freshly cooked. It has a good selection of wines to suit most budgets and tasty beer. It doesn't pretend to be a wine bar or an overpriced restaurant but the proof is in the pudding...so make the effort and give it a go. We all loved the meal, the service and the evening.

We were looking for a small village pub with relaxed atmosphere, good food and with country walks from the car park. We weren’t disappointed...and it’s even dog friendly. A good selection on the menu prompted the three of us to take three courses, each picking something different. There were positive comments all around for the food quality and the service complemented the relaxed atmosphere too. We had booked a table for our Sunday visit and would recommend doing the same as there are few other options in the area should the pub be full on arrival.

A friend and I lunched here recently and I was very disappointed. The service was incredibly slow and the bread in my sandwich was stale. But it was the price that finished me off - £8 for a ham sandwich!! Won't be going back. Shame, as its a lovely pub with a great garden.

Researched and found this pub on line. Drove to Hambleden and followed signs to Fingest intending to have lunch. Plenty of room in rear carpark. Tables in garden. Entered back door and greeted by, presumably, landlord. Told it was too late for lunch (gone 2pm) and the kitchen was closed. Took seats on cushioned bench near fire and ate pkts. of crisps as not even a sandwich available. Had drinks. Before we left, a customer ordered puddings and these were provided and served in the garden!! I thought the kitchen was closed! Will not return.

We made a reservation and were greated warmly, had to prompt to get our table and service was reasonable. The pub is a lovely country pub feel, log fires, dogs aplenty and hard flagstone floors so boots are no problem.

We had booked lunch here after a walk in the surrounding hills. Pre-ordered champagne was served on arrival (it being a birthday) and the food was delicious, well-presented and reasonably priced. My kedgeree came with the curry sauce in a separate jug and was probably the best I've had anywhere.

Stopped for a snack on a sat lunchtime. No vegan options. £7.00 for a slice of toast with cheese on top. Literally nothing else on the long wooden board it was served on. Very disappointing. No real snacks just starters and main meals.

This is a lovely country pub that serves excellent food. We had starters, main course and dessert and all our plates were emptied the food was so good. The service is friendly but efficient. As it was winter we sat inside but in the summer there is a garden with a large barbecue. There is also plenty of parking.

Today we came with my partner and daughter and stopped on the way to Henley. As soon as we walked into the garden we asked a member of staff if it was ok to just take a seat on a free bench in the garden. Her reposnse was yer yer and walked off. We then asked if they had a high chair please my partner was abruptly told they need to be booked in advance as they only have 2. He then asked when they would be in used and they was not being used till 3 and this was at 1 o’clock he was then reluctantly given the high chair. He then proceeded to the bar where he ordered and no please or thank you’s felt slightly hostile and not too friendly, this was the same on paying for the bill even after leaving a tip. Lovely place and really nice food just wasn’t a fan off some of the staff and didn’t feel hugely welcome.

We were a table of 4 mid week. The pub itself is lovely olde worlde atmosphere. The menu is good with just enough choice. We all had something different I had the Chilli Prawns, my husband had the Rare Roast Beef Salad, friends had the Crispy Belly Pork & Goat Cheese Bruschetta. The Bruschetta was burnt around the edge but the rest were delicious.

Jackson - owner/manager and a jolly man - greeted us all warmly. Seven of us had pre-supper drinks in the garden, enjoying the evening sunshine while chatting and making our menu choices. We went inside to have supper at 8pm and we were more than pleased with our choice of food. Empty plates was surely a good sign that the food was excellent and obviously freshly cooked. I look forward to visiting this very-English pub again one day.

Visiting Fingster with our family we are twice at The Chequers. The food is Fantastic. You must try the Welsh Rarebit. And if steaks are your thing they are cooked to perfection. We are here twice as the other pubs weren't as welcoming. The beer garden is lovely and on a nice day try and book a table in the garden. Friday night was pizza night. All cooked in the outdoor pizza oven. My kids love them. A Great place. The couple who manager and cook are great hosts and make you feel very welcome. We will be back.

Found ourselves in The Chequers at Fingest having walked out of The Bull and Butcher just up the road at Turville as, despite having booked a table 3 days in advance, we were told there was a 1 hour wait to be served.

We have visited the chequers before and always been welcoming. This tine the whole bar / restaurant seemed really poorly run with only and average bank hol Sunday causing melt down. Wine was expensive and sold like warm, waited ages to order drinks, again to order food, again to pay and was overcharged (waiters honest mistake) food ok, dog fouling near to play area for children should have been dealt with by staff but seemed to be left.

This is an absolutely amazing local pub. It is so homely, much needed after hiking for 3 hours in the hills. The soup, and the panini were great, and served quickly. You can tell why the locals love this place! I will be happy to return soon when we come to the Chilterns again.
