Nice outdoor space with great staff but not so nice indoors.

A friendly welcome and good service in a nice pub. The food was good and reasonably priced.

Went for Sunday dinner which was sublime. Plenty of everything was delicious and many home mate touches. The gravy and small roast potatoes were particularly moorish. Included in the price was a desert (option of about 5 if I remember correctly). I went for the rhubarb crumble and it was fantastic. Can't recommend this place highly enough

Had a great lunch at this lovely traditional pub, it was a sunny Sunday and although we had reserved a table it was too nice a day to miss the sun in the lovely beer garden! The ales were really good particularly the Marlow Brewery beer! We couldn't manage a Sunday roast although they looked superb and were very tempting. Instead we opted for the baguettes, we had a prawn one and a beef & horseradish with a small bowl of home made gravy, both served with delicious chips and a small salad. Perfect! All the staff were really friendly and the service was excellent. Definitely worth hunting out this treasure!

Smallish, traditional pub in a peaceful Chiltern village. A very individual establishment, this is certainly a pub which does food and not a restaurant which sells beer, which is very much a positive in my view. You are likely to see locals congregated around the bar, enjoying a drink and a natter. On the bar at the time of our visit were three ales, all national brands - personally I would like to see at least one of the handpumps given over to something local. The menu is not small, but focuses on straightforward bar food - this isn't the sort of pub to come for that special meal, as there is nothing particularly interesting on the menu. That said, what they do, they do well. Main courses are priced around £12-14 and include pub staples like burgers, chilli, lasagne and sausage & mash. There's also lighter snacks such as sandwiches, wraps and jacket potatoes. We had no complaints with the food we ordered and service was friendly and efficient. The pub also boasts a pleasant garden to the rear.

My friends and I received a warm friendly welcome on arrival. Lovely choices of food on the menu, plus specials board too. Food well presented, tasty and enough of it. Friendly staff and a nice environment. Highly recommended.

Had lunch with friends. First day back after a holiday for the chef so the specials board was limited to beef and Guinness stew. Main menu was limited to a summer range. More than adequate to choose from. Most of us went for the stew. Marvelous.

We have been meaning to try The Black Horse and finally got around to it. Typical pub grub menu with a few specials. 5 of us all chose different things and dishes were all very tasty. The only slightly negative comment was that the chilli was very mild. Good sized portions and the food and plates all nice and hot. Nice garden with tables and chairs and a small area for toddlers. The pub seems more spacious as the new people have changed the tables around giving it a less crowded feel. We will definitely be back.

The black house is a village pub. But enjoyed it just the same. Been told it has great food.

A lovely small pub in a picturesque village. We stopped off for lunch from a walk of the local hills. A good choice of four cask ales and the one sampled was great quality. Lunch was OK if not great and I would visit again for the beer but not the food.

I never do trip adviser reviews but todays visit to The Black Horse certainly deserves a mention. The two of us wanted a traditional Sunday lunch locally and chose The Black Horse at random and from looking at a few reviews. i think it was probably one of the best traditional Sunday lunces we have ever had. The choice was good, good portions, service excellent throughout the meal, all piping hot and terrific value for money. What more do you want???? They also sell good beers! We wil be back soon!!

Lovely country pub with great food. I had the stilton, broccoli and mushroom lasagne and it was very tasty. The prices are good. The lady serving was very nice.

This was the lunch stop venue on our Prices Risborough circular ramble, on the Mayday Bank Holiday Monday. Not a day the pub normally serves food so we appreciated the efforts made to put 3 hot mains on the menu that day. Pleasant setting, staff and general community ambience. Trouble was it looked like the landlady had to do all the cooking herself and it took a long while to get us all served. I opted for the considerably dearer chilli con carne and to be honest the portion was rather meagre compared to the cheaper panini (I think) options. Tasty though and it has to be said probably more healthy for me personally with my high cholesterol issues!

Food was nice and hot. Good value for the local area Nice big pots of tea and coffee. We also enjoy a cold beer or cider in the garden here on a warm day. Plus they have contactless payments!

Excellent Mother's day meal with parents and my boys. Since AJ the chef has started the meals have been lovely, I had a super Lamb Shank all served piping hot and the portion sizes are good value. All staff and of course Sam O perfect friendly service as always! Great selection of drinks as well.

Popped in as part of a walk, lovely country pub, but the experience was made by the lady behind the bar, well mannered and able to have a laugh and a joke with us, just like it used to be in pubs

Thanks to the kind staff that served us food (a very decent chicken Sunday roast for 6) even being quite late. After hours hiking the food tasted better than ever and the staff were very kind and helpful.

Six hungry cyclists from London turned up today and we all enjoyed our meals and drink. A very pleasant friendly welcome and they couldn't do enough for us. This is a no-frills proper pub where it seems that quality counts. I wish this was my local!

Great meal with the 4 of us trying a selection of the homemade food, Lasagna and Chilli etc. Food was excellent and served really hot. The pub has a new chef, we are looking forward to trying more of the menu. A really enjoyable evening!

Love this village pub. Reading other people’s reviews I was surprised to see one calling it dirty, rude staff, terrible food etc as it couldn’t be further from the truth and not sure if I come here regularly with friends and family and it always meets my expectations. Whilst it is an old building it is always really clean, the food is brilliant and the staff are lovely - Sam the new landlady is wonderful and keeps the pub to the same high standard as the previous.

Tripadvisor is showing this place to be a good, friendly, clean and courteous place to eat. This could not be further from the truth!! The pub is filthy, the food disgusting, the wine nonexistent and the service diabolical. Avoid at all cost!!!!! Toby Weller-Poley Princes Risborough

From entering the pub the staff were on point - Covid restrictions were well observed and staff were friendly and attentive. Food was excellent, I've had steaks in other pubs and they have been no where near this one. Normally I find the 'extras' on the plate too much but this one was perfect. The steak itself was cooked as requested 😋, again normally I find other establishments steaks overdone but here this one was perfect. A great local pub with a menu to suit. We'll be back again!!

After being turned away from another establishment (for not booking a table, see review on The Red Lion), we went to the Black Horse today. Lovely welcome from all of the staff and the landlady, social distancing in place and instructions all very clear. Great lunch served with a smile. It is a great pub and I would definitely recommend a visit.

Visited the pub today for a lunch with 10 friends. Really good choice of food from both menu and the specials boards, particularly the vegetarian board which my veggie friends tell me is most rare in pubs. Staff were very welcoming and dealt efficiently with all our orders. All our party were served within 5 minutes of each other and we all agreed the food was excellent, both mains and puddings. We came on the recommendation of one of our party who ate here recently. But I know we will all be coming back.

Have been here quite a few times with friends for normal lunch menu & twice now for their Christmas dinner menu what can i say food has been delicious every time & very reasonably priced!The hot bbq chicken & bacon salad is to die for yum! All Staff are always lovely & very attentive. Always a pleasure to book in the diary to come back. If you don't visit your definitely missing out

Just had a lovely Christmas lunch with friends. Roast turkey with all the trimmings, cooked to perfection! The chocolate orange cheesecake is incredible! We now feel really festive! The pub was decorated beautifully and Christmas music was on. A really enjoyable afternoon in a fabulous pub! Thoroughly recommend!

Visited to play Aunt Sally, and what a wonderful pub.

I have visited this pub a couple of times and always had excellent food coupled with friendly and accommodating service. The landlady could not have been more helpful and the chunky homemade chips are the best ever! I specifically chose this pub for my daughter's 21st Birthday celebration as it caters for all dietary needs and is very reasonably priced. The cosy atmosphere, beer garden and children's play area make it perfect for any occasion.

My partner and I visited the black horse during the week for lunch for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very welcoming and made the atmosphere comfortable and cosy. We had liver and bacon which was very generously portioned and fish and chips, again which was huge; which was just what we needed on another damp and wet day. Absolutely delicious. We’re looking forward for our next visit. As a suggestion for others, I’d recommend booking a table as they were heaving.

Well where do I begin? We came in on a Sunday afternoon to barely see a barmaid serving. This ended up being an old lady who struggled to remember what drinks we wanted and got our food service wrong.

Lovely surroundings, great staff, exceptional Chef who cooks everything on menu to perfection. Would recommend all of it, particularly the liver and bacon.

What a great little place! Ten of us ordered 10 different main dishes off the menu, all arrived at same time and the food was faultless and hot and delicious. Great service and they even provided plates and forks for the birthday cake we brought along. Very reasonable prices too. I’m convinced the 1/2 star reviews are 100% bogus. Book. Go. Eat. Drink. Enjoy.

Nice place. Very low key, in a good way.

We had my Dad’s wake here and the service was outstanding. The finger buffet was superb- far more than we expected! The tables had all been set up beautifully and they allowed me to play my own playlist I’d made, and set up the flowers and easels of photos. They provided a service that went above & beyond, There is a great children’s area too and darts! We’ve eaten here a number of times and it has always been very good value for money and great portion sizes. I cannot find fault with this pub! A*

I’ve eaten here twice recently both times the food quality was great along with the welcome and service.This is simply good pub grub but the choices are great with specials to keep interest, including veggie options.It was busy both times I went so I’d recommend booking.

Been here before and looked forward to going back. Mum had Scampi “the best I have eaten” was her reaction. I had moussaka which was very tasty, loved the garlic bread. Dad had a massive three egg omelette with onions and bacon. We all loved the food, great personal service and friendly staff. Highly recommend this pub for a tasty lunch time visit. Always busy and seem to have a lot of returning custom.

Five of us met for Saturday lunch, they were very busy with a large party, but this did not detract from the service we received. There is a good choice of traditional pub grub on the main menu, with some more unusual dishes on the specials board, all very reasonably priced. The food was tasty, the staff were all very friendly, and I would highly recommend The Black Horse if you like good, honest traditional pubs.
