Visited here on Tuesday 5th November for the first time. What a great little find. Great choice of real ales, warm welcoming decor and the lady bar tender was extremely friendly. It was very quiet that evening but the atmosphere in the pub was lovely. We sat at the bar, me and my husband, and had a good old chat with the other customers in there, very friendly patrons I must say. The lady bar tender(sorry forgot her name) had a chat with us for about half hour which was really nice, lovely young lady and a credit to your business We will definitely be back.... might even become our new local

A large group of colleagues from work on a Christmas do. Landlady obviously didn’t like the fact there was a large group of us spending money in her pub.. she wasn’t very friendly and aggressively slammed drinks down on the table and made rude remarks to a colleague who coughed or sneezed. went to Chequers on Saturday 3rd Nov 2018, firstly we stood at the restaurant for 10 minutes to be ignored by the staff, when they finally spoke to us and asked if we wanted a table they said they were full in the restaurant but that we could order food at the bar if we could find a seat. we ordered our food at the bar I ordered a burger with skinny fries, my cousin ordered the lobster fish cakes and a childrens pizza beans and chips for my son. we waited 30 minutes and still no food had arrived we asked the waiter who was cleaning the next table to be told by him that there was a 25-40 minute wait on all food (we were not informed of this at the time of ordering), he then went to check on our food and said that we had only been waiting 29 minutes and our food was the next order, another 10 minutes later our food arrived, mine with chunky fries instead of skinny that id ordered I pointed this out to the waitress and was rudely told that there were no skinny fries (again something that was not communicated at the time of ordering), my sons beans were also freezing which we pointed out and was told that he would get some more for which we had to wait another 10 minutes. I understand all restaurants have their off days but the attitude of the staff that work here is not great at all and the fact that they didn't even offer anything for the inconvenience is quite appalling really. Definitely would not go back and would not recommend to anyone. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE POOR SERVICE.

Visited today before the football game against Stevenage. The young lady behind the bar was lovely - welcoming and helpful. The beer (Camden Pale) was well-kept and was a decent pint. Me and my wife had the sausage and onion sandwich with chips, which was very nice - but the landlady .... dear me. Was there any need to be quite so hostile and rude? Yes, there were about 50 more customers than usual, and some were a little bit more forward than others - and they were football supporters, but to loudly demand ID cards from youngsters then ask them to get out of the pub was over the top. Where is your customer service? You stomped around, being generally snappy, snatching glasses off tables with a face like thunder. You refused to serve spirits to people - yes, some asked for shots, but some genuinely wanted a Scotch or a Brandy! THESE PEOPLE ARE PUTTING MONEY BEHIND YOUR BAR!! What a shame you feel that you have to behave like that. If you were on holiday, We'd come back here. Otherwise, I feel sorry for any regulars that have to put up with your attitude and rudeness.

It beggars belief that a landlady who wants customers to come to her pub, can be so aggressively rude to a group of people for having a bottle of water on the table that wasn't even being drunk as we had all purchased alcohol. A simple 'can you put that in your bag' would suffice. Yesterday the group of people I was with probably spent a few hundred pounds in this pub with lunches and returning later to have a few drinks. We are not weekly customers so I suspect that the landlady doesn't care about us, but rest assured that's a few hundred pounds she won't make from us next year. I would not recommend this pub to anyone.

We've had Sunday lunch at The Chequers and it's terrific, so I was really hoping that booking Christmas lunch there for me, my husband and mother would be a nice experience. Sadly, we were somewhat disappointed. At £50 for 3 courses, I expected more. The soup was very tasty but had the consistency of a sauce; my husband had bubble & squeak and said it was tasteless. The main course was carvery-style, which was fine as we helped ourselves to veg. No stuffing, and the ham was fatty and unappetising. Turkey cooked well, though and the roast potatoes were lovely. Desserts: little (and I mean little!) Christmas puddings but tasty. I had the berry roulade, and that was very nice. We were ushered from our table before coffee and mince pies, because the next sitting was due in, so had to have coffee standing at the bar. Overall, I wouldn't call it a good experience or value for money. I was most disappointed for my mum - she was so looking forward to having a great meal, after I'd said how great the Sunday roast is.

We were staying in a hotel and wanted a decent birthday meal venue with some good real ale too. Having seen the reviews it sounded promising. We called in to book a table earlier in the day when having a wander round the old High Street and maybe should have been alerted by the surprised expression on the barman's face.We arrived and a table had been marked 'reserved' for us so ordered our drinks which were good pints of real ale. A waitress came and told us that they had no rump steak and no scampi so my partner changed his mind from a mixed grill to a Super Salad (all sorts of healthy stuff supposedly) with a chicken breast and I opted for butternut squash wellington. Sorry we can't do the salad, he was told so he asked if they could do the mixed grill despite having no rump steak. No problem we'll give you sirloin. A lengthy wait suggested our meals were being freshly prepared so hopes were high (we didn't see anyone else dining though). A lady came out to apologise for not having the salad ingredients as it was rarely ordered but they were out of mushrooms too so would he like some garlic bread or an extra egg instead. OK. When our meals arrived the mixed grill looked good but the squash wellington was a 2cm which slice of what looked like a giant sausage roll. No puff about the pastry - soggy bottom and soggy top. No layers of squash, feta, carrot, red pepper chutney and walnuts, just a mush which didn't really taste of any of those and a very small salad although plenty of potatoes. I was offered extra salad which I gratefully accepted. When the lady returned to enquire if our meals were OK I expressed my disappointment and was immediately offered my meal to be deducted from the bill and would I like anything else. My partner's mixed grill was left at least half uneaten as he said it was all pretty tasteless and the chicken had a most peculiar texture. All in all a big disappointment especially as the High Street is full of eating places..

Visited on a Sunday for a few drinks, very welcoming with the open fire and warm lighting. Staff are excellent - friendly and with a good knowledge of the ever-changing real ales. Didn't eat, but the home-cooked carvery looked great and smelt even better! Our new favourite local.

This has fast become a favourite of ours in the local area. The food is good pub food and are always made to feel welcome. The guest ales are regularly changed and often themed, which is a nice touch.

Note: 15/20Ce pub ne paie pas de mine.

Dropped in with a friend for a quick bite to eat with a friend. We were the first customers of the day, the two different beers to say were very good obviously the beer had been pulled through prior to our arrival, so no beer in the lines overnight and they were not from the Green King stable. We both had the steak burgers which were cooked to perfection and were served in ciabatta bread with lettuce, tomato and relish. The burgers were accompanied by chips which were superb, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal which was topped off by a friendly, happy and smiling service.

It is clear that alot of money has been spent in this pub in the not too distant past and it shows. Tasteful decor, modern clean lines and interesting wall hung accoutrements. The service is superb and long may that continue. Friendly welcome, prompt service and follow up attention in relation to food it was obvious why the pub was busy on a Tuesday night. Outside covered beer garden and open car park the pub is a little removed from the main old town pub circuit. A Greene King pub, the real ales on offer extend far beyond what one would expect and the variety of micro and macro brewers on offer were excellent and the tasting notes refer to numerous more. Traditional pub grub just as it should be - affordable and filling but nothing too fancy compared to the overpriced Brake Brother gastropubs. Genuine locals with personality and character with not a Z lister reality star in site; ribbed leather seating with high side surrounds, it is very easy to sit back and enjoy a breather in this pub. We understand that the enjoyment of sport (rugby union) is an ongoing theme (world cup shirt raffle) - yet another example of a refined decent hostelry. Excellent wine selection and promising malt whisky selection. Welcoming, warm, clean, friendly, and with excellent service this pub (not a large one and with one semi-circular bar) really blew us away and we will definitely be going back. It is nice to eat and drink in a proper well run sophisticated pub as opposed to the conveyor belt plastic disinterested poser pubs so endemic in 21st Century society. Ideal for the Gate Hotel and Betfair offices opposite or for any Stevenage visitor or resident.

We had a lovel time, appreciated the friendly and efficient staff. Unfortunately one meal was significantly poorer in quality than the rest. The vegetarian burger was deep fried and so only tasted of grease, the chips that came with it were crispy on the outside and greasy on the inside. There was one limp lettuce leaf and two small pieces of tomato within the burger. That was it - a plate of greasy carbohydrate. Very disappointing; the other meals were rated as good but even with those the vegetables were all over cooked; boiled so that there was no crunch left in them.

Went here today, was just passing as live quite close. As always a great selection of beers to sample, and very friendly staff. Will be a pity when I move away from the area. Have never sampled the food on offer but I'm sure it is as delicious as the ales they have on offer. It is a joy to find a pub that provide a wide range of beers and change them on a weekly basis.

Visiting Stevenage with a friend, we were on the look out for some good pubs in the old town to visit for a few beers before heading for a meal at a restaurant. This was the first we came to on the High Street and was certainly the best. There were 10 ales on draught and they were beautifully kept (unlike other pubs in the town who didn't know how to look after their beers). We were there on a Saturday evening and I would have expected it to be much busier. I hope trade picks up soon as this is a great place.

I've found a little gem!..had Sunday lunch, roast beef, gammon and vegetables. Excellent, beautifully cooked and served by friendly young couple who have recently taken over this pub. The pub is bright, spacious and includes a large family table in its seating. There is plenty of outside dining space and parking....very suitable for all age groups, reminds me of a friendly London Pub!...give it a try.
