Chequers in Stevenage

We go here for lunch once a month due to it being in the middle of where a friend of ours lives. Its a nice little pub, with nice pub food that's VERY dog friendly 👍

Delicious food very generous portion size, staff very friendly and polite will definitely be back

Wonderful atmosphere, great garden (road noise is muffled and not an issue) and food was spot on!

The Chequers is a lovely, picturesque pub, both inside and out, with extremely warm and friendly staff who made me feel immediately welcome. The Sunday roast was very good with it and my selected drinks arriving very promptly. Indeed, the service from my dedicated waitress was excellent throughout, and her very cheery demeanour and attentiveness made the whole experience much more enjoyable. Although I don’t have a name, she served the sole gentleman on a 12.30 reservation on Sunday, 25 May - hopefully, this will be enough info for management to be able to pass on my very positive feedback. I would highly recommend this venue to anyone thinking of trying it.

Updated 21/05/25 Myself and a friend visited the Chequers last Wednesday. Atmosphere was great, staff were really friendly. We shared a starter and had a main each and 1 dessert. Couldn't fault anything. Really lovely evening. Updated 12/11/2023 Went for a meal for an early birthday get together tonight. Unfortunately service was shocking, couldn't order on the app as table number wasn't on any of the tables. Waved at staff for over 5 mins who were more interested in their phones, ended up with one of our party going to the serving station to ask to be served. We didn't leave a tip to reflect this service which is a first for us. Such a shame. I'm just glad the food was tasty. Update - 03/07/23 Had a meal with friends last night. Food was extremely tasty but the service wasn't as good as it normally is. Hope next time we visit they will be on the ball a bit more. Had a great meal here with family. Cater really well for kids too. Great atmosphere topped with great quality food.

Late family lunch, asked re specials was just told pie and nothing else ( table came in after us told differently), initial waitress didn’t know the menu when asked what something was had to ask for it to be checked, slow with drinks order, children’s meals had salt all over them - definitely not what should be done on a childs meal. Was very expensive for the quality shame used to be great food and service

Firstly, I’d like to say a massive well done to the front of house and kitchen staff for exceptional service. We were greeted with smiles and seated promptly. Service was very quick and efficient. The food was lovely . Would highly recommend and will be back again.

Great day out with the family, which was topped off by great food and great service. Sam was very attentive to the table and made sure we had everything we needed. All the food looked delicious and tasted even better. Its the second time we have been here and we will be coming again. Don't miss out.

An early Saturday evening dinner. Very satisfied with the meal and the atmosphere in the dining room. The highlight of the evening was being served by Andre. Polite and conscientious to our needs - he is a real asset to the waiting team! Thank you so much.

We went to the Chequers for Sunday lunch. Absolutely delighted, the food was delicious, well prepared and good quality. Our waitress was Emma, who was super efficient, very pleasant and attentive. Can’t fault anything. Will definitely return.

The staff are amazing! They accept and are great with the chaos associated with my son. They remember about providing weights for calculating the carbs for diabetes. The food is always top notch and very filling. The prices are fair and the service is always amazing - neither hurrying nor negligent. Absolutely great place!

Terrible experience. Service appalling 19.00 booking and main food served at xxx . Starter - calamari served with alioli which had a piece of old calamari buried in the alioli. Staff member (with a terrible attitude) claimed that the calamari had dropped on to the alioli when dished up. If so, it would have been on top, visible and not covered with paprika! No apology. 20.30 we got a refund and walked out! Avoid this place. No apology!

The place is full of nice people. The staff were quick and polite, the pub was clean and dog friendly, always a bonus after a long walk. Great selection of drinks and loads of places to sit in this quirky little pub.

Really poor service - took forever to get our food, which was average at best. The waiting staff were trying their best, but owners have clearly held back on adequate investment on providing an adequate Sat lunchtime gastro service.

Omg the food was amazing as was Maisey who served us, bed brisket sandwich to die for, and the chocolate orange bomb dessert. All of the staff were so friendly, Maisey was so polite and helpful. Would strong recommend this place and the staff to any and everyone.

I booked food here for after a funeral for a group of family and friends and was very happy with what was provided - nicely made sandwiches, chips and salad, very helpful staff and a nice quiet area where we could gather - was just what we wanted.

Wonderful dinner, the food was great quality. I had a pizza which was delightful, and beautifully cooked. Maisey looked after us and she was wonderful and so lovely to chat too. Hope spice girls karaoke goes down better next time!

We just enjoyed a delicious lunch with friends at the Chequers, Bragbury End. All the food was tasty and piping hot. I especially like the coffee and mini dessert option. (The fruit crumble is truly scrumptious, and just the right size to finish off). Many thanks to Maisey, our server, who was friendly and efficient, and looked after us very well.

Poor food quality for the price and asked for no chilli jam on burger but was served it anyway to someone who can’t eat chilli.

Really disappointing - I love the Chequers and the staff here are lovely, but a combination of issues on our latest visit means I don't think I can come back for the foreseeable. Firstly, the pub was obviously understaffed. Drinks took half an hour to arrive and beers came with massive heads. The time we were there was so long that as we were waiting for our deserts we were asked to leave quickly as the table they'd booked after us had already arrived! Not exactly the most warming of experiences... Nothing against those that were actually there - but management need to have a look at taking more people on. This obviously led to inconsistencies. Some food coming out cold, some bits missing and some bits wrong. For example, we asked for one scoop of ice cream and got given three. When we pointed this out to them, they said it was the right flavour and walked away - and we still got charged for three scoops. In total we had to reach out to staff and ask for corrections about three or four times during our visit. When it came to paying, I had a gift card that I had purchased through my workplace rewards scheme. When it came to redeeming the gift card, it would not go through on their system, and they told me there was nothing they could do on their end. This meant I had to pay twice for my £185 bill. They told me that I'd have to reach out to support over the phone and gave me a number - but when I went to call it was a dead line. So I'm a bit stuck on what to do now... I might have to request a chargeback with my bank.

My friend and I came here for lunch on Friday. I chose the duck & hoisin sauce pizza. It was the MOST delicious pizza I’ve ever had!!! The service was great, staff were friendly and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. Will definitely be going back!!

Really lovely traditional pub. The staff always friendly and helpful. Always have great food. We had lunch in the restaurant that was really busy but with a great atmosphere there, as staff stayed lovely throughout rush. Highly recommend.

We turned up with slightly fewer people than we had originally booked a large table for, yet we were split across two tables. The barman was SO early into his training that he needed to have a pint of orange juice and lemonade explained to him by a colleague. I never found out what my soup was, but the bread was stale. My fish and chips was really good for a pub fish and chips. Astonishingly, they still added the service charge to the bill.

Once again, a perfect evening with great food and wine, and Emma was as brilliant as always, welcoming, warm and friendly. Always a pleasure to come to the Chequers even though we don't visit as often as we used to.

We often have food and a drink here - lovely pub and has become consistently good in recent months - Sam and the team are doing an amazing job and it’s busy again most days which is a credit to the team - keep up the good work! Thank you

We love this pub but the food is a bit hit and miss. We've had some great meals and some not so good. Quite a disappointing Sunday lunch last weekend with overcooked meat and missing trimmings.

All 3 of us had the fish finger sandwich and the roll must have been stored somewhere cold. It was cold to bite and subsequently made the fish fingers cold and we left the majority of it. The chips however were piping hot and the desserts good.

Had a lovely meal here on 21st January. The pies are amazing. Maisie was a great waitress and really helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Our waitress was exceptional, the food was delicious, what I hated about the whole experience and would never of booked, nor will I dine there again, is being told that, even if I could of eaten a three course meal, I was being timed, I had 90 minutes to complete this challenge, as my table was booked out. I was not told this when I booked. It put a whole spin on what would of been a lovely sunday roast, which should of been chilled and enjoyed - absolutely terrible when money comes higher than customer satisfaction. Least the Waggon and Horses give you 2 hrs. Not my ideal way to spend a Sunday and would not return on a Sunday.

Lol Very old world pub atmosphere. Quite economical too.

Had a meal in here midweek and was absolutely delicious especially the Hunters Chicken schnitzel so compliments to the chef for that. Love coming here and will continue to do so.

Service was friendly, professional and efficient without being too fussy. Food was very good, presented nicely and tasted good, you could tell it was all freshly cooked. Big improvement on a few years ago, will definitely visit again! Only slight disappointment would be that the log fires weren’t lit and it was a freezing, snowy evening.

Went for a Boxing Day dinner , altho I love the ambiance of this pub ,one of our meals was totally wrong,. pre ordered chicken nuggets for my grandson and was served chicken Breast , and my mum pre ordered a turkey Christmas dinner and got no stuffing or pigs in blankets , if they had run out they should of told us but being as the meals were all pre ordered they should of known the quantity required .

Warm welcome and food was great. Not rushed to leave.

This place has a lot off potential. Very dog friendly. Lots of open fires. Good parking. Nice interior. But the food and service are absolutely dire. I had a burger which was described as a stake burger but was incredibly cheep and chewy meat. Much worse then a weather spoons burger plus the onion rings where missing. Fish was very dry and way overcook. We had drinks afterwards for around an hour and no one cleard the plates. Had a brownie which came out as a plate of mush just pure uncooked ingredient. Plus it's not cheep. It's not expensive but it's costly enough that you expect a decent meal.

Our 35th anniversary had a cosy ambience with sumptuous food and excellent service.

Visited with friends for pre Christmas lunch. The service was slow and impersonal. We waited ……. and waited for our orders to be taken and for food service and for further service for drinks and coffee My salt and pepper calamari starter was tepid at best and was absent any hint of salt or pepper. Mains were ok but coffee was again tepid, all an indication the these items had been hanging around in the kitchen waiting for delivery to our table In all a two course lunch and coffee for four people took more than 3-hours Clearly more staff with more experience are needed to service the restaurant if things are to improve to an acceptable standard

Called into Cheques for Sunday lunch… Wow 🤩 fantastic beef, roast potatoes, glazed carrots.. ordered extra pigs in blankets and Cheese cauliflower… Top quality, service was super friendly and speedy Gonzales….a big smile 😃 and will return for the Epic Sunday roast.. Enjoy 😉

Unfortunately after returning to the Chequers for a lunchtime meal. We were very disappointed. I had steak pie and was unable to even cut the meat let alone chew it I returned the meal. I was offered another meal but by this time I was put off any food. My wife’s lasagna was burnt around the edges but she did eat it. I was refunded for my meal but I thought it would have been offered at least a complimentary drink. Alas we will not be returning

Everything was hard ! Flat bread you could use as a frisbee and a curry which the chicken was so hard it taste like rubber ! Least the dog will get a chew at the end of the night ! Also what the hell is wet hot chocolate ?
