My husband and I have visited twice in recent weeks. The food hasn't disappointed and the service has been spot on. Our second visit was during half term and was busier. The busyness did not negatively affect the experience. Even though there is a slop for easier access at the front of the establishment, there is no disabled parking, which is a little disappointing. Overall, this is an excellent venue for an intimate date or for a meal with friends.

Dined here last night as we're staying close by and we would definitely come back again! The atmosphere was lovely, very warm and friendly and the restaurant area was very cosy and the decor lovely! The mains speak for themselves! We both chose the haddock and chips and as myself and my husband both enjoy our food we got an extra side of chips and some Mac and cheese to try! We was told by the waitress that the fish was a big portion but that was absolutely fine for us! Haddock was delicious and all plates/bowls were left empty afterwards! For dessert we went for the sticky toffee pudding which was just as good! Beautiful pub with amazing food, an absolute gem of the Cotswolds ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had a lovely late Sunday lunch. Aaron and the team made us feel very welcome. The food was wonderful - scallops and the roast pork for me! There was a really nice welcoming atmosphere and a real fire too! The next step up would be some live music. The venue is perfect for it. Check out the card I left you Aaron 😀

A group of 8 of us booked a table for an evening meal. Food orders were: 2 cheeseburgers, 2 calves liver, 1 soufflé, and two panfried hake. Drinks were also ordered. Nice surroundings and attentive service, but it was the food that turned out to be such a disappointment. For the fish dish, the customers complained that the hake was cooked to within an inch of its life, making it very dry and slightly chewy and too salty. The 2 cheeseburgers were ordered with stilton cheese, but there was none when they arrived. We called the waiter over, who took them back, and soon returned them with said cheese included. Although the burgers looked quite impressive, tucking into them was quite another matter. The beef patties were leathery tough and one had to really saw at the meat to dislodge a portion. Admittedly tasty, but really hard going chewing through this stuff. We think that maybe when the burgers were returned for the cheese, they were probably zapped under the Salamander to heat up, thus rendering them overcooked and tough. The 2 calves liver dishes were voted OK and tasty, as was the soufflé. For dessert, some sticky toffee and marathon puddings were ordered, which were good, although one person thought the mousse a little too cocoa strong. All in all it was disappointing that a little more care and attention was not given to the dishes. Concept was great, but execution very poor. Perhaps the kitchen needs to demonstrate more care and attention to detail, or maybe having a cook with a little more experience?

We had a very lovely evening on Saturdayn. 1st Feb. The upstairs room was ideal for a family party. Warm cosy atmosphere and the two staff were very attentive! Top stars for them both. Mostly the food was good but my Hake was overcooked and dry. It was a celebration so I didn't want to spoil the evening by sending it back. I would recommend It as a lovely venue.

Their food is amazing, check my pictures out, we have the “French dip” (bread with beef brisket and jalapeño and a lovely French dip) really nice. My wife had the triple cooked chips and fish, I think the picture speaks for itself!!! The food was a bit slower than we expected but the waitress did a great job of managing expectations and proactively took the starters off the bill. They were a chef down and a group of 25 turned up just before us, despite only booking for 14. We were a party of 8 and all of us enjoyed our meals. We really appreciated the great communication. We had a meal here on New Year's Eve. I'd pre-booked the table and we were running late which was no problem at all. We didn't feel rushed the whole time we were there, we were made to feel welcome. The service was amazing, we were checked on regularly for food and drinks, but it was so natural rather than pushy which made it a really enjoyable experience. We had our toddler with us which in some places makes me anxious, but it was so child friendly and accommodating with her food allergies. The food was amazing, I could have eaten anything on the menu. My husband ordered the steak, he's very particular, sometimes sending it back if it's not cooked properly but this was cooked to perfection. The price was really reasonable too considering the service, quality of the food and the lovely country pub feel. Even though we were on mini break, we'd certainly make the trip here to visit again!

A bit disappointing. The table wasn’t ready so had to wait as previous diners overran. Not a problem I guess but we could see other free tables but assumed they were for other diners. After 15 mins oddly they just sat us at one of those. There were four of us so ordered four starters, they forgot two. This was now an hour after the booking so needed to move on to the mains. Two were great, one was cold, the fourth then turned up over five minutes after the others (but was nice when it arrived). No one asked us if everything was ok during the meal (normally at a decent restaurant that would happen). Wanted to spend more on dessert but decided to move on and have some at home in case it took another hour to come. Staff looked stressed and not enjoying things. Not sure why. Hopefully just a one off….

We came on Saturday night and had the best meal. The food was so tasty. I need the recipe for the soup please? I was a little disappointed to only get two scallops for £15, they were very tasty and perfectly cooked but another scallop and a slice of sourdough with a touch of salad maybe would be a great addition. The main courses of fish and chips and calves liver were fantastic. The calves liver maybe lacking a few vegetables, but delicious all the same. The marathon pudding was also a delight. I visited The Chequers on Monday 28th for a birthday meal for my partner. The pub itself is lovely and was relatively busy, even for a Monday. The staff were attentive and even put a candle in the dessert. I’ve rated the food a 3/5 because the restaurant were out of a lot of the dishes. I understand some dishes may not be available but it was 6 dishes which is a lot. Perhaps it was a timing or supply issue (which can’t be helped), a courtesy call to inform us that the menu was limited would have been nice. Particularly as the dishes were largely the ones we went for. The food we ended up having was really good though. I had the fish and chips which was great. My partner had the pork chop but swapped the beans for mash which was very accommodating of the kitchen. Overall I’d definitely go back and would recommend.

My goodness, what has happened to this place? Wednesday evening at 8;30 pm. A total of 4 people in the bar and restaurant. Absolutely zero atmosphere: No open fire Lights on fully bright Music so low it could not be heard No fresh flowers It felt clinical and reminiscent of a Doctor's waiting room. There are rumours that it is going to be sold. I do hope so. In need of a fresh injection of ideas and management. The menu hasn't changed for years. The Chequers was one of the first decent gastro pubs in the area. It has rested on its laurels while a number of far better alternatives have sprung up locally and taken away business. The Fox, Wild rabbit, The Plough, The Bell, The Bull etc.

I have been to the Chequers several time and always found it reliably excellent; Food, wine, service are all top-class, while it is a proper pub and happily has not turned into a gastropub, which in my experience means odd mixtures of food and long waits; (" Our chef is personally cooking your dimmer- it should be with you in half an hour'). Interesting place, very convenient just outside Chipping Norton in a pretty village. A warm welcome from attentive staff. A lovely pub and you immediately feel at home. Unexpectedly, the disappointment was the food, rather average pub grub. One soufflé was cold in the middle, the thick batter on the haddock wasn’t cooked and the warm salmon salad wasn’t warm at all; however, the devilled kidneys starter and liver main course saved the day. An excellent wine list. To survive in the Cotswolds, with so many eateries, you have to be on top of your game every day!

We recently visited this pub and initially had a great experience. The pub itself is lovely with a warm atmosphere, and the service started off well. However, things went a bit downhill when the waiter brought out the wrong order. We had ordered two cheeseburgers (clarified this twice before it went to kitchen) but were instead given two chicken burgers. Although this was a little frustrating and we did point this out, we were easygoing and decided to eat them rather than send them back as didn’t want to make a fuss. When the bill came out it charged us for the more expensive chicken burgers (that we didn’t order). After pointing this out, the bill was adjusted to the price of what we originally ordered, but we still felt more could have been done to compensate for the mix-up. We ate a meal we did not want and did not order and paid full price for it. While the lady kindly knocked off the service charge as a gesture, it felt a bit tight to pay full price for a meal we didn’t ask for. We were totally understanding of the mix up and accommodating. However, the waiter seemed annoyed at us, gesturing to her colleagues in frustration with us. We were made to feel uncomfortable and that we were somehow in the wrong for their mistake. All in all, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but these little details definitely affected our overall impression. Hopefully, the management takes note to ensure future customers have a smoother experience and learns not to make the accommodating customers feel in the wrong for the staffs mistakes.

I took my wife and son for dinner at the Chequers last night as it was his birthday. We live nearby, but hadn’t been there for a long time, and if you’re paying a lot of money for food that you could cook at home, it has to be special. I was very disappointed. The pub is really nice inside and there was no problem with the service. I had an old favourite, devilled kidneys, as a starter and although the kidneys were beautifully, soft, they were unlike any devilled kidneys I had had elsewhere or cooked myself. They were covered in some sort of brown gravy, which was too salty and quite oily, without the usual piquancy associated with this dish. The main course was monkfish curry, which appeared to resemble a Thai green curry - it was green - but which had a strange gloopy texture, no real depth of flavour and was also far too salty. It reminded me of a jar of supermarket cook-in sauce I once bought on a recommendation but then regretted. It was sad because it is a nice place but I won't be eating there again.

Absolutely shocking service during the booking process, we cancelled before we even got to the pub. I booked for a large party, the booking was confirmed the next day, so no issues. Within a few days the numbers reduced slightly therefore I e-mailed straight away to notify of the change. I heard nothing for over a week so e-mailed again, still no response, I tried ringing over and over again but no one picked up. I submitted the form on their website and another pub in the chain responded to me to say they would pass the message on. They confirmed the reduction in numbers that night. I was told when I booked that we would need to pre-order and that they would send the Summer menu out to me, which was fine, however with 2 weeks to go before our booking, still no menu. Again I e-mailed several times with no reply. I finally had a response to say the menu would be with me by Friday, it turned up on Saturday, but was an extremely limited 'Function' menu. Nothing on the menu appealed to any of the party, but when we asked if as we were pre-ordering we could choose from the bar menu, we were told no. As we were 13 in the party, the Function' menu is applicable for over 12 . They would not flex in the slightest. We were extremely concerned at the type of service we would receive when we did get to the pub if they couldn't even sort the booking out. So with only 4 days to go before the 'Function we have luckily managed to book into a much more amenable pub. Thanks for nothing Chequers, and if that is how you treat your customers, I'm sure you won't be in business much longer.

Four of us ate here the food was ok nothing special tho. My reason for the review was whilst I was still eating the plates of the other three were taken away which to my way isn’t the correct way to go about things. Not only that but I still hadn’t finished when my plate was taken from me by leaning across the front of the person sitting next to me. We had booked our table and I can only assume they wanted rid of us. I hasten to say I won’t be going again.

Stayed for a weekend at beginning of February 25, great place with friendly helpful staff, pub is packed with charm. Food and drink are very good. Rooms are traditional and have low ceilings and sloping floors, very clean with all the amenities you need

Atmosphere and setting typical of what you would expect from a pub. Soft lighting and traditional meal.
