Everything about our meal was worth five stars, from booking for a large family party, to the welcome roaring fire on a grey day, the friendly, helpful and efficient service, and the wonderful food. (One of the puddings we had which isn't listed below is the spiced plum crumble. We recommend!) We all enjoyed ourselves and agreed that The Chequers was a very good choice. Thank you!

The food was a bit slower than we expected but the waitress did a great job of managing expectations and proactively took the starters off the bill. They were a chef down and a group of 25 turned up just before us, despite only booking for 14. We were a party of 8 and all of us enjoyed our meals. We really appreciated the great communication. I think the staff there coped extremely well despite being put on the back foot by some selfish customers. Would highly recommend.

We had a meal here on New Year's Eve. I'd pre-booked the table and we were running late which was no problem at all. We didn't feel rushed the whole time we were there, we were made to feel welcome. The service was amazing, we were checked on regularly for food and drinks, but it was so natural rather than pushy which made it a really enjoyable experience. We had our toddler with us which in some places makes me anxious, but it was so child friendly and accommodating with her food allergies. The food was amazing, I could have eaten anything on the menu. My husband ordered the steak, he's very particular, sometimes sending it back if it's not cooked properly but this was cooked to perfection. The price was really reasonable too considering the service, quality of the food and the lovely country pub feel. Even though we were on mini break, we'd certainly make the trip here to visit again!

My late mother lived across the road from the Chequers and as she lived half way between me and my late brother we still get all the family members together there for a meal at Christmas time. We had a great time with 17 of us from 70 years old to 15 months old sat down to a great dinner with lovely food and were well looked after by the staff.

A bit disappointing. The table wasn’t ready so had to wait as previous diners overran. Not a problem I guess but we could see other free tables but assumed they were for other diners. After 15 mins oddly they just sat us at one of those. There were four of us so ordered four starters, they forgot two. This was now an hour after the booking so needed to move on to the mains. Two were great, one was cold, the fourth then turned up over five minutes after the others (but was nice when it arrived). No one asked us if everything was ok during the meal (normally at a decent restaurant that would happen). Wanted to spend more on dessert but decided to move on and have some at home in case it took another hour to come. Staff looked stressed and not enjoying things. Not sure why. Hopefully just a one off….

This was a birthday lunch for my partner. We both love the Chequers after several meals as a couple, and with friends and family. As ever, the food was superb ( partner had cod, I had haddock. Shared the chips after a couple of shared snacks instead of starters. Delicious!) N had the crumble for dessert and I had the marathon pudding...probably my 4th or 5th...nuff said! We came on Saturday night and had the best meal. The food was so tasty. I need the recipe for the soup please? I was a little disappointed to only get two scallops for £15, they were very tasty and perfectly cooked but another scallop and a slice of sourdough with a touch of salad maybe would be a great addition. The main courses of fish and chips and calves liver were fantastic. The calves liver maybe lacking a few vegetables, but delicious all the same. The marathon pudding was also a delight. I visited The Chequers on Monday 28th for a birthday meal for my partner. The pub itself is lovely and was relatively busy, even for a Monday. The staff were attentive and even put a candle in the dessert. I’ve rated the food a 3/5 because the restaurant were out of a lot of the dishes. I understand some dishes may not be available but it was 6 dishes which is a lot. Perhaps it was a timing or supply issue (which can’t be helped), a courtesy call to inform us that the menu was limited would have been nice. Particularly as the dishes were largely the ones we went for. The food we ended up having was really good though. I had the fish and chips which was great. My partner had the pork chop but swapped the beans for mash which was very accommodating of the kitchen. Overall I’d definitely go back and would recommend.

My goodness, what has happened to this place? Wednesday evening at 8;30 pm. A total of 4 people in the bar and restaurant. Absolutely zero atmosphere: No open fire Lights on fully bright Music so low it could not be heard No fresh flowers It felt clinical and reminiscent of a Doctor's waiting room. There are rumours that it is going to be sold. I do hope so. In need of a fresh injection of ideas and management. The menu hasn't changed for years. The Chequers was one of the first decent gastro pubs in the area. It has rested on its laurels while a number of far better alternatives have sprung up locally and taken away business. The Fox, Wild rabbit, The Plough, The Bell, The Bull etc.

I have been to the Chequers several time and always found it reliably excellent; Food, wine, service are all top-class, while it is a proper pub and happily has not turned into a gastropub, which in my experience means odd mixtures of food and long waits; (" Our chef is personally cooking your dimmer- it should be with you in half an hour'). Interesting place, very convenient just outside Chipping Norton in a pretty village. A warm welcome from attentive staff. A lovely pub and you immediately feel at home. Unexpectedly, the disappointment was the food, rather average pub grub. One soufflé was cold in the middle, the thick batter on the haddock wasn’t cooked and the warm salmon salad wasn’t warm at all; however, the devilled kidneys starter and liver main course saved the day. An excellent wine list. To survive in the Cotswolds, with so many eateries, you have to be on top of your game every day!

We recently visited this pub and initially had a great experience. The pub itself is lovely with a warm atmosphere, and the service started off well. However, things went a bit downhill when the waiter brought out the wrong order. We had ordered two cheeseburgers (clarified this twice before it went to kitchen) but were instead given two chicken burgers. Although this was a little frustrating and we did point this out, we were easygoing and decided to eat them rather than send them back as didn’t want to make a fuss. When the bill came out it charged us for the more expensive chicken burgers (that we didn’t order). After pointing this out, the bill was adjusted to the price of what we originally ordered, but we still felt more could have been done to compensate for the mix-up. We ate a meal we did not want and did not order and paid full price for it. While the lady kindly knocked off the service charge as a gesture, it felt a bit tight to pay full price for a meal we didn’t ask for. We were totally understanding of the mix up and accommodating. However, the waiter seemed annoyed at us, gesturing to her colleagues in frustration with us. We were made to feel uncomfortable and that we were somehow in the wrong for their mistake. All in all, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but these little details definitely affected our overall impression. Hopefully, the management takes note to ensure future customers have a smoother experience and learns not to make the accommodating customers feel in the wrong for the staffs mistakes.

I took my wife and son for dinner at the Chequers last night as it was his birthday. We live nearby, but hadn’t been there for a long time, and if you’re paying a lot of money for food that you could cook at home, it has to be special. I was very disappointed. The pub is really nice inside and there was no problem with the service. I had an old favourite, devilled kidneys, as a starter and although the kidneys were beautifully, soft, they were unlike any devilled kidneys I had had elsewhere or cooked myself. They were covered in some sort of brown gravy, which was too salty and quite oily, without the usual piquancy associated with this dish. The main course was monkfish curry, which appeared to resemble a Thai green curry - it was green - but which had a strange gloopy texture, no real depth of flavour and was also far too salty. It reminded me of a jar of supermarket cook-in sauce I once bought on a recommendation but then regretted. It was sad because it is a nice place but I won't be eating there again.

Absolutely shocking service during the booking process, we cancelled before we even got to the pub. I booked for a large party, the booking was confirmed the next day, so no issues. Within a few days the numbers reduced slightly therefore I e-mailed straight away to notify of the change. I heard nothing for over a week so e-mailed again, still no response, I tried ringing over and over again but no one picked up. I submitted the form on their website and another pub in the chain responded to me to say they would pass the message on. They confirmed the reduction in numbers that night. I was told when I booked that we would need to pre-order and that they would send the Summer menu out to me, which was fine, however with 2 weeks to go before our booking, still no menu. Again I e-mailed several times with no reply. I finally had a response to say the menu would be with me by Friday, it turned up on Saturday, but was an extremely limited 'Function' menu. Nothing on the menu appealed to any of the party, but when we asked if as we were pre-ordering we could choose from the bar menu, we were told no. As we were 13 in the party, the Function' menu is applicable for over 12 . They would not flex in the slightest. We were extremely concerned at the type of service we would receive when we did get to the pub if they couldn't even sort the booking out. So with only 4 days to go before the 'Function we have luckily managed to book into a much more amenable pub. Thanks for nothing Chequers, and if that is how you treat your customers, I'm sure you won't be in business much longer.

This place is a bit of a contradiction. Pub or restaurant? Local eatery or aspirational venue? A very informal ambience, but serving really excellent dishes. A noisy drinkers' pub bar, but a surprisingly extensive wine list worthy of a Michelin star restaurant, offering a huge range of price points to suit most tastes and pockets. However the service is unambiguously shoddy. Both the staff we encountered were sloppy, slow, inefficient and badly trained. We were gestured casually towards a table rather than shown to it. We waited well over 5 minutes after ordering our drinks. Our server had poor knowledge of dishes - had to check with the kitchen on both our questions. Gentleman served before lady, not once but twice! Just pretty poor front of house overall, and the whole atmosphere seemed a bit rushed and disorganized. All things to all men? or badly missing the mark of whatever it's trying to be? I'm not sure it matters if the food and wine are all that matters to you, because both are excellent.

Great food, brilliant service and a very nice atmosphere to enjoy an evening meal. This pub is great for all types of occasions and groups, family, couples and parties.

I live in the heart of the Cotswolds, and have eaten at so many different top end Cotswold pubs for Sunday lunch over the years, but I have to say right now The Chequers in Churchill is without doubt the best pub in the Cotswolds for a great Sunday lunch. The dinners are always hot, plenty of veg, and the roast potatoes are amazing, and unlike most pubs these days they give you a good portion of meat on your plate too. Cannot recommend this pub enough - best for Sunday lunch hands down. Great atmosphere, friendly, staff are great too. Plus some great beers & wines to accompany your meal too.

Visited on Saturday with another couple and a toddler. The staff was really friendly and made sure all of us had a great time. The food was great (steak was exquisite!) and the atmosphere was lovely.

As someone who is gluten free, it can be difficult to find restaurants that not only accommodate but do so with care and attention. Vincent (we’re guessing!) provided the best experience I have ever had as someone gluten free. The whole menu was explained in detail and the love of food and ingredients was incredibly apparent. An amazing experience with absolutely delicious food. I cannot wait to come back.

Very impressed. Very professional set up. Food was excellent, staff were very attentive and friendly. A great experience, I would highly recommend this restaurant, and plan on booking a table here again when we are staying in the area.

We ate an early dinner here on December 31st. Very disappointed with the food, considering the general quality of food in the region this was the lowest quality and hygiene we’ve experienced in the years of coming to Chipping Norton. There was a hair in my wife’s main, and later at desert, a hair in mine. We informed the waiter after we paid the bill who was very apologetic. If you’re looking for a nice dining experience in the area there is much better quality around.

This was on my short list of researched restaurants for our trip. We both enjoyed our meal, but it doesn’t stand out my memory for some reason. I do recall that it was a fairly heavy meal and I didn’t feel like dessert (sacrilegious!). If we hadn’t already had reservations, we might have selected the Wild Rabbit instead, where we stopped for a pint beforehand.

I had the pleasure of enjoying a Sunday roast , and it was an absolutely delightful experience! The ambience was warm and inviting, creating the perfect setting for a cozy meal. Our server was incredibly friendly and helpful, that made the visit even more enjoyable. The food was delicious on an authentic take on a classic roast. The portions were impressively generous,. Overall, a lovely and authentic experience I’d highly recommend!

My starter was burnt and My main was slimy and raw in the middle. I had to get a dessert as nothing was edible and I was starving. My dessert was too sweet and only tasted of sugar. This was appalling for the prices they are charging. I have wasted my money here. The server was inattentive and waiting time is too long so I had to try and find someone to get my order or to take away my plates. The server would take away one plate but leave some dirty plates and mess on the table then just serve the main. I have never been so disappointed at a restaurant before.
