Second time visiting but unfortunately this review is not a positive one. Walked in for a meal. Seated very quickly as it was a quiet Wednesday evening and was given the menu to look through. Ordered the Chequers burger. When it arrived it looked very appealing but when I cut the burger in half the meat was still raw most of the way through. Made the staff aware and they took it away for my order to be replaced. Second burger arrived and this one was much better. While mistakes do happen this sort of mistake shouldn’t have been missed with the dining area being quiet with only 2 other tables being occupied.

Myself, husband and small dog went for lunch and had the warmest welcome from both the staff and the roaring log fire. We had the burger and ham and mustard sandwich, both of which were delicious and the staff carefully checked for allergies. Our dog was also looked after with a bowl of fresh water and plenty of free treats!! Gabby behind the bar was so lovely and welcoming and made us so comfortable that we may have stayed longer than we intended!! Would thoroughly recommend for food and ambience

Came in last minute for a meal. The friendly man at the bar arranged for a table to be booked for 4 adults, 2 children and a dog later in the evening. The pub is very traditional with cosy nooks and small rooms, we were sat in a small room, just our group, which was perfect for us. The staff were super friendly and they apologised for the delay in food being served, giving us a free bread and olive tray while we waited. The food was a while to be served, but that was fine with us because staff kept us in the loop and it was worth the wait! Food was delicious! Would wholeheartedly recommend this pub for anyone in the area. Lovely food, lovely staff and a lovely pub.

The reviews should be restarted if someone new takes over a business! It’s misleading. We were asked to order our food in advance due to there being a number of us attending. With that in mind, I expected our food to arrive without complication and without delay. Not only were some meals wrong, some didn’t even arrive and had to be ordered when we had already waited an hour. When questioning where our food was and asking if the children could be served first as they had waited an hour and were hungry and crying.. we were met with an extremely rude waitress who snapped that ‘the food is coming’ ‘it will be here when it’s here, I don’t know’ ‘it’s sat on the side plated, i don’t know how long before it gets to you’ I am amazed she is allowed to be front of house, zero customer service or compassion for our situation. That being said, the food itself was nicely cooked and fresh and the manager that intervened when a meal was missed was professional. But due to the poor service from the waitress and the waiting time, I would not return.

Ordered two Sunday Roast dinners. Sat for ages, told sorry we lost your order, (forgot!) no Pork left, so settled for two Roast Chicken. - two tiny Chicken Supremes arrived. ( Not Roast Chicken) No Roast spuds just some very tired veg. We were the only diners left by then and hungry, so we ate them. They offered a free sweet as a goodwill gesture! Not what we expected. Everybody blaming each other for the slip up. Dining room manager should have taken responsibility.

I thought I'd walked into the Chequers in Churchill when I was Charged £12.10 for a pint of Fuller's best bitter and a small 125ml glass of white wine. The last bastion of sensible pricing falls foul of the Gastro pub mentality. Back to Aldi for a £4.99 malbec or sauvignon blanc!!

We popped in for a drink & some crisps. Staying nearby at the premier inn, and the land lord showed us to our seat, and took drinks order immediately and served straight to us, was warm and toasty with a real fire lit, lovely little candles made it feel warm and welcoming and was a very lovely atmosphere. I cannot comment on food or drinks however my partner and I walked into this pub hoping to sit down and eat. As we walked in the man behind the bar looked at us and then looked away (must have known we were tourists) he then asked the lady who walked in behind us if she is having drinks or food. We walked out and went somewhere else. If you are a tourist do not bother!

Nice atmosphere, small fire in the side room was cozy, service was friendly. But unfortunately, I can't recommend due to the prices. They charged £19 for a small, basic fish and chips, which was average at best. Even their website listed this dish at £16.50 when I checked right before going. This is practically robbery at that price point. They were also weirdly stingy with ketchup when requested - barely had enough for half the chips. The fact that you can get cheaper fish 'n chips at Heathrow speaks volumes. If you agree, stop paying these prices.

Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat here, although planned to. We walked in the pub, it's dining area looks nothing like the pictures. The whole pub had a really horrible suffocating smell to it. This seems like a very old fashioned typical British pub, with families sat around tables playing board games. Whilst this is lovely, the atmosphere wasn't great with it seeming like they were unexpected of tourists, as they all turned to stare, almost like Hot Fuzz. We arrived slightly early for our table, and was told that we were too early and we'd need to sit down somewhere first. The staff member said he would find us a seat, but just wondered off so we left and decided not to stay as it wasn't our scene at all.

This place needs inspecting by the Food Standard Agency. The worse meal of my life. I order the smoked tofu pie - it was disgusting! Overcooked pastry and the tofu was like crumbs with some wet and unrecognisable vegetables. We were serve some boiled vegetables separately, I bit into the broccoli and had to spit it out - it tasted like mould! I looked at the cauliflower which had spots of black showing - I presume this was mould as well. The roast potatoes was inedible - it tasted awful! We complaint to the waitress and she was sympathetic, but seem to just repeat a learnt script that she'll ensure that our complaint was heard and apologize for our experience. I thought school dinners were bad in 70s, but they seem like gourmet meals compared to this pub. I would have given it no stars but that option is not available.

I had the worst meal of my life at The Chequers this past Sunday. We wanted to visit for a roast dinner and based on the reviews online it seemed like a good pub to visit. The roast dinner was inedible and all the food was microwaved food which was lukewarm with the watery gravy heating it up. The vegetables all tasted of vinegar for some reason. It was truly the worst meal I have ever had, I could've made a much better roast dinner myself at home and I'm by no means a chef. We made our complaint at the time and asked for a reduction in the bill due to us not eating the meals and having to go elsewhere for food after. We could hear the discussion between the waitress (who was being very helpful) and the chef in the back room and heard the chef say very loudly 'they can f*** off' which was completely unprofessional given it was obvious that customers could hear this. I really wouldn't recommend anyone to visit for food as its not a cheap place for food and the standards are the worst I've ever seen. It would be better to go to Toby Carvery. Despite the above, I do want to say that the woman who served us was brilliant, she was so friendly and helpful from the beginning and I feel bad for her having to serve such terrible food. I've rated 5 stars for the service for this reason as the waitress was the only redeeming part of our experience.

Ordered lunch and then popped to the gents. First thing I noticed was rust stains on the washbasin and then I saw some peculiar dark marks on the leftmost urinal. Looked like two wide strips of heavy black mould running down either side. Seemed very strange so decided to wet some toilet paper to see if the mould would come off. With one wipe most of it did so I can only conclude the urinal had not been cleaned properly for weeks, if not longer. Not a good start. When the meals arrived the cooked veg was watery, very soft and kind of tasteless and the roast potatoes just didn't taste right. Somewhat to my surprise the beef wasn't too bad though. A charming waitress came to check if the food was alright but we felt we had to be honest about the food and the toilet. She was sympathetic and said she would pass on our comments to the manager. However, when the bill came we were charged full price, which I thought was wrong. I could have complained at this stage but didn't want to spoil our lunch experience any more. Can only conclude that this pub needs to clean the toilet(s) properly and consider changing or retraining the chef. The urinal was truly revolting, I'm afraid.

Honestly I would give it a miss. It's a lovely looking venue and thats what made us decide to eat there. But that is pretty much where it ended. The service is the bare minimum and whilst the staff are making a good effort they are clearly in need of training and I did feel sympathetic for them. The food was very average. I had their surf & turf which was an unseasoned steak with a few bits of scampi on it. It was cooked medium like I requested but otherwise quite dull. My wife had the lamb burger which was just an average lamb patty stuck between 2 bits of bread with nothing else in it. All the accompanying sides were basic, plain and looked like they had been purchased from a cheap supermarket. We ordered a bottle of Malbec and when it arrived our waitress said here is your Merlot. When I asked if I was able to pay with American Express she asked me "Are you American then?" She had been speaking to me throughout our meal and I have a very noticeable London accent. They are nice staff but seemed to have been chucked into service with no noticeable Management present and no real idea on what they are doing. The guests sat next to us also made comments about their food to the staff as they got up and left. We left feeling underwhelmed and a little disappointed with it all. It wasn't priced cheaply either. It's a nice looking old style pub but go just for a drink and eat elsewhere.

Very busy. 2 lovely ladies to serve you. Food: the portions not generous for a Sunday lunch. The pudding was a disaster, though: the mango sorbet tasted stale and the profiteroles tasted off. There was chocolate syrup and whipped cream on the profiteroles, the chocolate syrup tasted like mature cheese and the whipped cream tasted mouldy at some point, after which I could not continue eating and had to buy choc. biscuits in Sainsburys to take away the taste of the pudding from Chequers. We came to The Chequers on our first night in Chipping Norton and I have to say the food was appalling. We ordered the fish and chips and were severely disappointed with what we were presented with. The fish looked and tasted like to had been cooked from frozen and was ‘wet’ and soggy. The chips were a dark brown colour and seemed like they were refried multiple times. After a long day of travelling this was not the lovely pub meal we had hoped for. We went for a drink in the neighbouring pub afterwards and witnessing the food coming out the kitchen which looked far better than what we had unfortunately just consumed!

We were stopping in the Premier Inn and this was the first eatery we came to on Saturday lunchtime. It looked inviting so we decided to have lunch. The menu is not fancy or extensive but our meals (burger and fish & chips) were very pleasant and reasonably priced for the area. Special mention to the young lady waiting on the tables who provided an excellent level of service. Later on in the evening we stopped for a drink on the way back to our hotel but this was ruined by a loud trio of men stood at the bar whose every other word was an expletive. The bar staff were all young and female so we didn’t really expect them to say anything but we couldn’t understand why the landlady didn’t intervene when she returned. I’m going to start with the positives: as you walk into this very pretty pub the homely feel hits you, blazing fire and beautifully lit creating a very warm welcome. Locals with their dogs at the bar. We had spent the day emptying our late uncle’s house and feeling hungry we found this lovely pub. We sat near the fire which the chap behind the bar checked up on periodically and put on more logs and chatted with us about the history of the pub. Very friendly staff as was the young waitress who was polite and attentive, could not fault the front of house team. Locals chatting away with friends accompanied by their gorgeous dogs and I’m sure I saw a doggy treat tin! We ordered fish and chips and the beef burger with cheese and bacon and chips for our mains and billionaires slice and lemon tart for pudding. Once again let’s stay on the positive: my husband really enjoyed his burger and said it was really tasty. Sadly that’s where it ends. The chips that accompanied our mains were oven chips, not even good chunky oven chips. Skinny anaemic really not good. The fish on my main was tasteless, watery and very thin in height, so much so that the skin side (skin had been removed obviously but the grey flesh hadn’t and there wasn’t much white flesh to eat.) No need for salad on the plate either. We have a takeaway in Stratford: The Clopton Catch THAT’S what F&C should taste like. The peas were supposed to be mushy peas as stated on their online menu but they came out as boiled peas. The tartare sauce was in a sachet as was every other condiment. On the online menu my main was £13.50 but when we paid the bill it was actually £15.50 ‘oh yes, prices have gone up’ so update your website! I cook homemade food for my family and fresh chips are not difficult, mushy peas a doddle and battered fish, even if you buy them in, find another supplier. Tartare sauce or vinegar should never come out of plastic. The billionaire chocolate slice with whipped squirty cream was a claggy gloopy piece of something unimpressive, once again not difficult to make it rather than buying it in. Ending on a positive note: Your pub, ambiance and staff are a credit to you, the history of the place deserves homemade not convenience grade food.

After 1h of waiting time, we were told they were starting to prepare our order and they ran out of one of the dishes. The food took 1h40 to arrive, and was not good. Ok pie but overcooked roast beef and microwaved frozen veggies. Do not recommend

Stale atmosphere, took over 1:45 to deliver food to table after ordering. Food was awful. Avoid at all costs. Reviews are not up to date …. Really disappointing experience

Truly disappointed to find myself moaning about a meal in a local pub I would much rather support than criticise. My choice of meal was a very simple one: gammon and chips. According to the menu, I was to expect a "horseshoe gammon steak" which put me in mind of a pink, juicy and generous cut of gammon with a nice rind of fat. The accompaniment of "skin on chips" sounded no less enticing. However, what arrived was an extremely overcooked, chewy piece of meat which neither in shape nor size would I describe as a "horseshoe"; rather a very ordinary, relatively modest slab of sinewy, over-done meat. As for the chips, no skin in sight, just very ordinary fries. My partner was happy with her battered cod though it was obvious even under the crepuscular lighting that the batter was bronze rather than golden, in short overcooked. As for service, we arrived shortly after 6.05 but it was around 6.45 before our food landed on our table. We had ordered a starter but it took over 10 minutes for them to realise that they were out of stock and come back to us with the bad news. Even if the clock started at 6:15, that's 30 mins to get a very simple meal in a pub. All in all, not an experience which will encourage us to return. We chose to arrive before it got busy so if you can't get the basics right before things get hectic, you either have staff problems or there is something more fundamental failing. Either way, you need to get to the bottom of why you did such a poor job of convincing us to return.

Bar staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Plenty of nice beers and wines to choose from. We had booked a table for 12 for an 18th Birthday party with family. The waitress was clearly under duress in our service. The occasional huff and snort on any seemingly reasonable request such as "could we have some water please" or "can we have some mustard" left the impression we were nothing but a hindrance. By the time we'd received our condiments we'd finished our dinner. Overall extremely dissatisfied but thank the bar staff for at least not making us feel like illegal coughing immigrants in a lockdown Trump rally.

Cracking traditional pub, gets busy so phone ahead if you're hoping to eat. Food is excellent.

Having waited for the pub to open on an extremely hot Saturday I noticed that an employee had opened the front door to take something out. Asking her whether the pub was open I was barked at with "well the doors open isn't it!!" I walked inside to be greeted with "what do do you want!" And not in a polite manner. At this point I walked out having said that a nicer attitude would have been better. Never tried the beer, food or anything else, but the hospitality is lacking and shockingly poor.

It had been 58 years since I last stepped in this pub and not a lot has changed to the building structure except a dining facility. The beer and wine was excellent and the food was matching it. The steak and kidney suet pastry main...

We went here when it was unfortunately quite busy and short staffed. We waited a long time for our food, and drinks, and cutlery :/

Unfortunately we had a terrible meal here. The Vegetable Wellington was undercooked, the pastry raw (pretty much inedible),it was served alongside salad straight from a bag, potatoes with no seasoning, gravy or even butter and a sad portion of beans and peas. It was really poor and disappointing. Service was friendly but not very attentive, we were not told about the specials available, no one came to ask how the meal was or if we needed more drinks. I definitely would not recommend eating here.

Truly awful food. A gammon steak like an old boot dragged through a ditch, and an undercooked vegetable wellington. Cask ale was poorly kept, if not off. Cannot fault the friendly service, but food should be avoided.

I'm working this way so came in for a Sunday dinner and I can honestly say it was pitiful! I decided to come because it was actually good value compared to other places where you pay 20 quid with extras of CARROTS on top. So...

Just visited this excellent pub in Chipping Norton. The food was fantastic and the service was very good. Great British food at a very good price.

This is a real village pub, really quaint, we didn't eat, just had a drink. Felt it was more of a Local's pub , everyone new each other.

Unfortunately the website needs updating. Arrived on Sunday food stops at 4 not 8. Menu is also totally different and a bit more expensive. Lovely looking pub so hopefully we get a chance next time.

Had fish and chips here last week and sadly it wasn’t very good. The chips were tasteless & the fish was very unpleasant. Ended up leaving most of my meal as I couldn’t eat it. Waitress was very polite and attentive, she rushed us through so that we could order before a large party ordered.
