Golden Eagle in West Oxfordshire

We found this really nice pub while we were on a short break. The food is very reasonably priced and excellent quality of cooking and presentation. The pub is quite large with lots of screens for sports but it also has a very comfortable atmosphere. The Green King IPA is excellent, and the service is friendly and well organised. We were so impressed we returned to have our breakfast here. For info breakfast is served 10:00 to 12:00

Really nice pub with standard pub grub which is what you want. Plenty of options of you like to watch sports both indoors and outdoors. Food was quick and tasty. Will definitely be back at some point. But beer garden will likely be packed come the nice weather!

The place needed a really good Dust! Toilets! It would be helpful if the toilet roll dispensers were set to release the toilet roll through the section at the front! No cutlery in baskets on table and only one napkin! Staff to busy discussing their toilet visits rather than serving customers waiting! We Requested a cup of tea to be told Coffee machine was being serviced during the middle of lunchtime service?????? When we did order it still took 10 minutes to be brought to the table! When we left there were many tables that had finished eating and customers had left yet no tables were cleared! Good job it wasn’t busy! Food was as you would expect from this establishment, however the inexperienced staff really lets the side down!

Proper family pub and atmosphere. Staff are suffer friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. I’d like to give a special shoutout to Felicity! Very welcoming, accommodating, friendly and nothing was ever too much. She made our visit so warm and friendly I’d definitely return and recommend. She’s a real credit to your team! X

I went to the eagle for food with my children. Our waitress was felicity she was very attentive. She came and checked on us a few times and made sure our order was right and the food was okay. She was very good with making sure the children were occupied with drawing supplied by the pub. The overall experience was wonderful. Thank you felicity you were great.

There's a bloke called Nick who works here and he's an absolute top bloke. 11/10 service from him and the rest of the staff.

Decent pub by Asda. I went there with a group to watch the Euros final so it was very busy and service was slow. Cant comment on how it normally is in there though. Special mention to Nick the new barman who does an amazing job.

Nick the new bar man is so funny you need to keep him on all the time he has me laughing my head off every time

The atmosphere is a lovely place to relax and enjoy and good service.

Undercooked bacon.... Raw. Undercooked tomato. Hard. Butter you can not spread. My second outing to the golden eagle and second time disgusted at the food coming out of the kitchen. But absolutely a lovely pub. Just kitchen cooking needs serious improvements.

If having a disability, where use of a stick is a must, sit outside as you cannot move inside for tables and chairs, (God help you if you are wheelchair bound). Food is 'pub food', it is what pub food should be, basic and easy. Parking is available, though could be mistaken as a builders yard at times. I personally wouldn't recommend it as a 'family' friendly place, the statt are fine, and do their best mostly, it's the expletive clientele,(customers) that could basically ruin a family basically feeding, as a parent, I'd not want to be explaining c u n t mentioned while eating chips with the kids. Great for a drink, it's a pub, a drinking pub, but needs help tbh.

Monday evening, the pub was quiet. Friendly staff and fab food!! We ordered Katsu chicken (lovely) and 8oz sirloin (v well done and not a trace of blood ) then Apple pie (huge portion full of apple) and Salted caramel icecream cake....can highly recommend...will be back

When we went in we were told that it would be a 45 minute wait for food,which was fine because we could have a drink. Well it was time for our food to be ready,someone came out and asked us what we ordered. We were told they no longer had what we ordered and would we like to order something else,so we did. We were told it would be another 10 mins. We weren't happy but excepted it. After 15 minutes of waiting I went up to the bar and asked when our food would be ready. They went and checked and said it would be right out. In between these people who ordered after us were getting their food. Well the young girl in the bar came over,after waiting over an hour and 30 minutes, and gave us our money back. She said the food was being cooked then and we would get it for free. So after nearly two hours the food was finally cooked. I was just about to walk out when it came. We never did get an explanation of what had happened. They spend all this money on a refurbishment and yet they can't sort out the kitchen. Food shouldn't take that long. The only saving grace was the young girl behind the bar. Wish I'd got her name. I think management needs to look at what is going on.

Had to wait more than hour for the food to be served. not coming back again. the kitchen personnel need to be raplaced ASAP

Great food, service average, dont seem capable removing empty glasses, so much so one table was so full we had no room to put another glass so accidentally dropped one. Phone orders take 20 minutes to arrive just for a drink. One barmaid was swearing in front of customers and beyond slow, rude and miserable, she also couldnt pour a pint and sighed and eye rolled when asked to top it up. Manager was excellent. Atmosphere is great for family or without.

Food was delicious, my server Jade was friendly polite. Service with a smile.

We came in for an early Christmas meal and it was great. We were greeted by Catherine who was really helpful and attentive. The food was amazing, Jacob came out and personally checked on us aswell to make sure everything was okay. All in all made our experience 5*. Huge thank you to the team that day!

I was part of a large group on Christmas Day. We had a lovely Christmas dinner, a very generous portion with all the usual trimmings. We were made very welcome by our servers Rob and Jacob. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great and we under no rush to leave. We had plenty of space to enjoy our four courses. Great value for money. One of our party has a severe nut allergy and they were very mindful of this. I would highly recommend it.

Just a quick note to say how great the service provided by Sam was on Fri night. The bar is always busy but Sam went out of her way to serve us, was notably polite and efficient in her service.

First visit to this pub, enjoyed a great pint with a very good atmosphere. Very reasonably priced drinks and food.

Arguably one of the most poor and artificial “pubs” I’ve ever been too. The food is cheap, low quality rubbish, which wouldn’t be too bad, If it didn’t take an hour to arrive. The drinks are adequate at best, however the absolute mission required to try and obtain a single pint is shocking. When it’s busy, regardless of how many pub goers are at the bar, they will insist on still only utilising 1 single, poorly trained, low experienced member of staff to serve them all. Therefore leading to a wait time of a minimum of 20-30 minutes just to get a pint. All of this was very frustrating, however the straw on the camels back was that, when drinking there, rather than calling a last orders before 2300. They rely on you not realising the time, and then ring the bell 20 minutes before normal last call time, which typically in a pub would mean last call, however at this “pub” the bell means that there will be zero drinks sold beyond that point, this is the first time I’ve heard of this in my entire 30 years of drinking in pubs. When question why this was, the 16 year old behind the bar stated “it’s how the manager likes to do it”. So to summarise, so much potential for a pub, in such a key area, especially next to the RAF military base, but due to poor staffing and service, I’d rate this pub a 3/10. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Proper English pub. Great price for English breakfast. Full English breakfast only £4.49. Crispy bacon. Lovely breakfast. For affordable price for english breakfast only here!

Really helpful when my car broke down in the cold and I was awaiting breakdown services.Offered me a complimentary hot drink and use of facilities until breakdown arrived. As a lone female I was very grateful for their help . Thank you!

To be fair, this is a pretty standard Green King pub with a distinct lack of real ales actually available on tap when we visited. The food for the adults was good, but the reason I'm giving this pub 5 stars is for the staff. One of our party is a toddler who has SEVERE reaction to eggs and dairy, so it is very difficult for his parents to take him anywhere to eat, due to the risks of cross contamination. We informed the staff (Sam was on bar and Beth was in the kitchen) and they did an OUTSTANDING job of checking the ingredients on both the main meal (we had to change the main meal as it had a trace of egg in it, which Sam advised us of) and dessert, isolating his food and keeping us informed all the way. Absolutely superb job by Sam and Beth as the toddler had a great time eating his food, and more importantly had zero reactions, all due to the care and attention of Sam and Beth. Both are a credit to Green King.

First of all the pub looked lovely and very busy which is great to see. We booked for 6.30 pm on Saturday 4th November which was great no problem. 3 adults 1 x child 10 months old so asked for high chair when booked. Again, no problem. Arrived and pub was very busy as the Arsenal and Newcastle football game was playing, so lots of supporters watching on the TV screens jotted around pub. Shouting like idiots at a TV screen swearing and being as loud as possible. The management surely as a responsibility to let families know what the situation will be with the crowd's especially as it says on their website Family friendly. Definitely not on a football night. The food was not that good . The daughter's burger and chips was on the cold side. The lasagne was hot, but the cheesy chips (sorry, meant to say the chips should have had cheese on), but there was hardly any on them. Service was good and prompt. Had to have two drinks replaced as the gas in lemonade was gone.

A lively place with very reasonably priced food. Two Sunday roasts for £12.99. However, you get what you pay for. Ok food but nothing special. Friendly staff though.

Myself and my boyfriend came in for a roast yesterday and it was amazing. Catherine was really helpful and recommended the roast beef. We were told the chef for the day was Jacob. Hats off too him the food was great and service was really quick

Every Thursday this pub is busy yet they have only one person working behind the bar. Massive queues and around 20 mins plus to get a pint. Walked out and went Beehive after waiting ages.

I just love this place. Whenever I return to Carteron, it's the must visit place for a beer. The staff are lovely with the best customers. Magic!

Went for a cheeky Friday breakfast. I fully recommend the Epic breakfast. Credit to the chef.

Tried it out today after the refurb and it's lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. Fliss was pleasant and offered extras like double burger and desert but not In a pushy manner. Food was brilliant too and reasonable priced. Will def return xx

It was a surprisingly busy Wednesday evening but the service at the bar was so slow. Once served the beer was good. The food menu was vast but a lot was not available. It was tasty though. The atmosphere was good outside with lots of space.

Came in on Friday tea time for a leaving do. The 2 barmen in loud shirts were absolutely fantastic. They were quick to serve ,and even though it was extremely busy they seemed to breeze through it. Their customer service was an absolute credit to the company. You made our evening so enjoyable and created a great atmosphere for everyone there. Thank you.

Went with my daughter and three grandchildren, the staff were superb, friendly and very efficient. The quality and speed of service was excellent, we all had a lovely experience thanks to the amazing staff.

Visited from Hampshire. Fantastic staff - especially Jacob, who went above and beyond when it came to food intolerance and overall service, felt like we had personal service, so accommodating and super friendly guy too! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Food was lush and really good cost. The overall atmosphere was very welcoming! So much to do here: they play all sports and have a great little games area along with activities every night! Also dogs welcome which was a plus! I wish this was our local! Must have visit for a great pub feel!

The recent makeover has made a big improvement. Smart decor inside and out. More seating outside covered and not covered. Big choice of beers. New menu is very good and well priced. The staff work really hard, but they need more. We recently went on a warm Saturday evening and they were struggling to keep up. No.1 choice for food and drink in Carterton now.

Visiting family in the area and was told to try The Golden Eagle as it has recently been refurbished. The pub is very clean and tidy. The outside area has lots of seating to enjoy the sunshine. We had booked for 5 using website but 4 more friends joined us and the manager quickly accommodated this. We ordered for 6 adults and 3 kids, we were informed of a wait time due to being busy and food arrived in that time and altogether. The staff were very attentive and made sure everything was good with the food. We will definitely visit again and recommend the the Nachos and chicken wings as sharers.

Service errors and over charged at till. I was initially given a free drink which i was happy with. The manager came over and gave me a full refund of my food very impressed.

The food is very good but the waiting times are horrendous. Placed the food order at 12 as soon as they took orders on a Sunday, we waited almost an hour before we got it. It was not busy so God knows why such a long wait. I would recommend it if you have hours to spare but not if you do not have much time or if you are hungry.

Nice pub open space, seating outside under a canopy so it doesn't matter if it's raining. There's a TV outside, what more do you want!

Hello, I came into the pub yesterday with family sat outside ordered food, the food took a long time to come out when it did was cold only the beans were hot, a young bloke asked how was our food so I told him cold and was not happy. We had children with us and 1 order was wrong so my daughter went up to say to lady and she was very rude to her not just the once but twice. 7 of us eating at the pub and I have attached pictures of what was our plates and waste off money. Thank you. Got a reply.... Thank you for the feedback it's a big shame to us that you didn't enjoy your visit with us yesterday. I'd love to try to change this around. I'd like to offer you and your party another meal on us, an opportunity to get it right this time. Please let me know when you'd like to pop in next and I'll make sure your visit with us is a much better one. No reply after sending 2 more emails so here's my feedback Very disappointed with company 😕 will not be going again spending over £80

Came for a late lunch on a Tuesday. The new look of the place is great and very inviting. Bringing our 6 year old, she felt very comfortable. The staff were very pleasant, Steve and Katherine were great and the food prepped by Sean and Tim was spot on. Considering the price of the food, it really was spot on. We’ve lived in the area for five years and this was our first visit, gutted we didn’t come sooner! We were drawn in by seeing how popular the place looks since it was done up. We’ll be back as soon as we can. Maybe a few days to let the grub down!

Food was great for the price, waitress lovely, but let down by bar service. Approached the bar for a drink to be encountered by ‘YES’. Ordered drink and was literally plonked on the bar. Plenty of other places to go in Carterton where your not made to feel like your putting someone out of place to order a drink

The refurbishment of the place has been done really well. It has a really modern feel, with a great outdoor space for socialising. The service could be better as ordering off the app, we had to wait around 40 mins to be table served. The staff were more interested in serving at the bar, than sorting app orders out. If you ignore the app ordering issues; it is a really good pub for food and drinks.

Wouldn't recommend, staff are okay. However, food was cold and staff were slow. There's not enough staff on any night and you will be waiting around for everything.

Quick friendly service , can be busy at weekend but today food delivered within 15 mins . Nicest tastiest Kebab and ideal size for lunch , highly recommend

Just went in for a pub meal and was told that they had NO chips. Ridiculous that they have not ensured that they had enough stock. First visit to the area but definitely will not be back to The Golden Eagle.

It must be the worst salad! 1 small lettuce leaf with a spoon of coleslaw. The chicken was tough and the chips weren't nice either. I'd have sent it back but we'd waited an hour already and the kids (who'd had Gammon and chips which looked was better) were ready to go.

We attended the golden eagle today for a meal with my family, when arrived we were greeted with a smile by the bar maid who explained the menu to us, we decided to have Gammon & Eggs & the steak pie, the food arrived in good time and was cooked to perfection, the Chef called Sean actually took the time to do a check to ensure we were enjoying the food. What more than can I say but absolutely outstanding, we will be back.

Well what can I say!! Absolutely out of this world, top l notch food and the local talent was amazing! Who was the young chap on the mic for the quiz? I believe his name was Jason? So let’s move onto the food, mango chilli kebab, better than the local Turks! After quizzing the delightful waiter Jacob, he informed me Sean was the chef of the evening, one of the best in Carterton in my humble opinion. This is a must visit for all your entertainment and exceptional food!!

Awful service, long wait for food and no apology. If you don't like working in hospitality find another job. Very disappointing especially after the money spent on the recent renovation.

we have just stayed near here for a week in our caravan, just stumbled across this pub while looking for something to eat, the food was just fantastic, so good we went back a few days later for another meal, yhe waitress on both visits were very polite and friendly, bar staff were also very polite, we will deffo go back when we are down this way again.

Big improvement since it's been refurbished. Nice atmosphere, good food at reasonable prices.
