The Chance Inn in Dover

We were a party of 12. All the meals were excellent. Service was efficient and good. Cannot recommend The Chance enough. Will be back....

Thank you to all the amazing staff for the hard work that you put in for the stake night Halloween special, It was the best steak I have had for years and the garlic mushroom and garlic mayo was sublime, not to forget the gypsy tart and waffle with fruit and ice cream. a lovely evening was had by all.

Wow! Called on the Saturday to book a table for Sunday Roast and they managed to accommodate and squeeze us in. The ambiance, service and food were outstanding. The roast was very filling, you will leave with full, very happy stomachs. The kids roast was also a good portion size for them and they also really enjoyed their roast. Carrots and Parship were beautiful and meat is wonderfully cooked. The deserts were also delicious. 1st time going and we absolutely shall be returning. Thank you Nicky, Jules and Dave for the service and food. 100% recommend coming, especially for the roast.

I'm quite fussy when it comes to a roast dinner but this was probably one of the best I have ever had. The food was so full of flavour. Staff as always very friendly. Well done Jules, you've done yourself proud!

Booked a table for the Sunday roast checking vegans were catered for. Got there and was told there were no vegan options other than a plate of vegetables. Absolute joke. Won’t be going back.

Saturday evening meal and catch up with family. Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Such a pleasant atmosphere it was a shame we had to go home! We will be back very soon!!

Outstanding pub. WE ate here on a friday night whilst visiting friends. The food was exceptional, with a good selection of beers, and the staff were very friendly. A great pub.

Had a lovely evening on Saturday. Great food, welcoming atmosphere, lovely beer, friendly staff. Such a little gem of a village pub, a short drive out of Dover. Book a table to avoid being disappointed. You won’t regret it. I recommend the superb chilli washed down with a Sussex Best.

A bald headed employee with glasses and a beard was extremely rude to me and friends as we entered the pub. We believe this employee is racist due to his behaviour to our friend. He asked if they were serving any food, he abruptly stops my friend, slandering him, saying he has an attitude, forcing us to leave, screaming verbal abuse until we left. He single-handedly made the pub lose 5 customers and its reputation. Very disappointing to see.

—racist member of staff— Following on from a review left earlier by another member of my party. Approximately 8 o’clock on a Saturday night. Our evening abruptly came to a rude standstill after entering the chance inn. A short bald headed guy with glasses looked disgusted when we asked if food was still being served and instantly got offensive, accusing me of disrespectful behaviour and a bad attitude. I’m a man of an ethnic minority in the uk, I don’t like to use the word racism much as it’s a very loaded word. But this short fella, I cannot think of any other reasoning for his unacceptable behaviour. It wasn’t even worth a rebuttal at the time. I do not want to give my money to people of that nature, even surrounding guests who had already been served looked shocked by the short guys behaviour. It wasn’t worth a debate with me, I know over time people of this nature end up ruining themselves in the long run. Shame because I had been served by a lovely young women in there multiple times in the past and even went out of my way to leave a nice tip as they couldn’t have done more for our hospitality at the time. Shame a minority have to permanently tarnish a lovely pub with lovely food and usually lovely members of staff. Won’t be back I hope the other lovely members of staff who have previously served me in the past move on to an establishment more fitting of them

My wife and I recently met friends for lunch here, and I'm so glad they recommended it—it was delightful. We both ordered the pot roast beef with creamy mash and vegetables, and it was fantastic. The beef was tender, falling apart effortlessly, while the mash had a rich, buttery flavor. For dessert, I tried the gypsy tart, which was light, melted in the mouth, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. The staff were attentive and friendly throughout our visit. This quaint pub, with its charming garden, is definitely worth a visit

A wonderful country pub. A pretty, spacious garden.where old fashioned bowling is played. We ordered Roast Beef. It was perfect, accompanied by roasted carrots, fresh greens , creamy mashed potato and home made Yorkshire puddings . Delicious but so generous we couldn’t quite finish it. They also offered a good selection of sweets but we couldn’t manage them. All washed down with cool lager shandies which were reasonably priced at around £4.50 per pint.

We had a lovely pot roast and fish and chips, would highly recommend this excellent food and friendly service

we were looking around Guston looking for houses for sale and my wife got caught short for the loo and although the pub wasnt open for another 30 mins they let her use the loo..thank you very much for your kind service..we will come back for a meal and a drink..thank you so much.

Typical English pub atmosphere, very family friendly, with delicious and plentiful fish and chips. Free mini-golf and artisanal bowling upstairs! Perfect for us!

Couldn’t even comment on the food because they said they didn’t have any …..????? Was looking forward to going to this pub because I’m a local but they treated me with what felt like hostility and when I asked if they had a menu the chef said “deal with that” just bit rude

Didn't feel warm and welcoming at all.. Sat in bar area, people came in the lady behind bar seemed rude and fed up that more people were arriving.. Her words were " where are all these people coming from"

We enjoyed our meal so much we booked for August while we were there. The food came out promptly, with hot plates, which is unusual these days. The staff were attentive to our needs and came back to check on us twice. Very clean and cosy.

We ate here 2,weeks ago today, I thought I had left a review, but so busy moving I didn’t. We went there during moving i had the GF stroganoff and my husband and friend had fish and chips!! It was more like a fish goujon?? Lady serving us said they had got the last 2 fish and chips! We think they must have cut in half?? For the price it was ridiculous, my food was nice, but the fish was definitely a goujon?? However you spell it.

Where to start with this amazing gemma of a pub in Guston near Dover kent. We went for dinner last night and have to say Dave the chef cooked us the most deliciously tasty Chinese food i have ever eaten. It was superb, the flavours were exquisite and presented beautifully. A huge huge thank you to him and his beautiful partner Nicky. They always go the extra mile and cannot recommend them enough 👍

The quality and quantity of the food was excellent. I had the fish and chips and the fish was two bits in a very nice crispy batter. A good sized portion of chips and peas served as the base for the fish. For dessert I had the coconut and jam sponge with custard. Both parts of the meal were tasty and well presented. The wife went for the beef stroganoff with rice and crusty bread. She was very happy with the quality of the food and said it was enough so declined the dessert. The meals and desserts are good hearty meals made from quality ingredients. The price for the meals and drinks was very reasonable.

We had Sunday lunch today, which was huge but excellent. Vegetables cooked really well. Service excellent. Wine lovely and cold, gin and tonic great, Next time we book we will have a children's portion, so we can have a sweet. Well worth a visit and we will be back again Thank you

We last visited in 2022. Since then ownership has changed. Today we had the Sunday lunch. It was excellent - the best pub lunch for a long time. The establishment has managed to combine a traditional village pub, with locals sitting at the bar, with great food. We will return.

First time of visiting this lovely village pub this evening. The food was amazing. We had the homemade beef and guiness pie which was really tasty and the best creamy mash. Such a wide choice of menu to choose from. And.... gypsy tart. Great service too. Will be back!

An excellent meal at a competitive price. Very well presented and the mash was the best ever. Staff very friendly atmosphere quirky, made more so by the 40 something couple snogging in the middle of their meal. A bit off the beaten track but that's why we have sat nav. We booked in advance having had it recommended, but was fairly quiet and plenty of room for walk ups.

Went to a wedding reception and the buffet was top notch. Bar staff were attentive. No waiting for ages to be served. Retains the atmosphere of a country village pub.

Although we didn't eat, i have eaten from food made by the chef in a different pub, so i know it will be first class. And the team are so friendly.

Wow.. What a change in a short period of time 😞 We came here just a few weeks ago (see my previous review) and the food was fabulous. Tonight a totally different experience unfortunately, cold raw triple cooked chips, chewy fillet steak.. Very upsetting and what a shame.

Sunday lunch as a birthday treat. Wow what a beautiful meal. Choice of slow cooked beef, chicken or roast pork. We can honestly say we have never enjoyed a Sunday roast more. Perfect, tender beef, great Yorkshire pud and perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. Puds of fruit crumble and sticky toffee pud fresh custard and icee cream. girl- this food. it changed me. i had had the worst night of my life, and i was hungry. so i thought to myself, lets give "the chance Inn" a chance. so i did. i was greeted by wonderful waiters who showed me right to my table and really made me feel noticed. The food came out very quickly, and I devoured it. DATTEBOYO that food was good. will be coming here soon!

First visit to the Chance Inn to celebrate my friend Rosie’s birthday, she recommended we went there as she knows the landlord. Very warm welcome by all the staff, lovely comfy interior and fabulous food. Clean plates all round, I had the steak pie and I have never had better anywhere! So many pubs these days are really restaurants now, but this place has got it right. Lovely to hear the banter of the locals around the bar enjoying a pint. Highly recommended and look forward to the next time!

Went with family and friends for New Years Eve lunch. Very friendly pub and lovely staff. Congratulations to the chef as well. We all agreed the food was beautifully cooked and big portions good value for money. We had a great time, and all said we would definitely be coming back. I think I might be back in February.

Excellent pub food. In fact no different to the pub food that was served at the White Horse in Dover. No surprise as the White Horse is about to change hands and some of the team ( guess including the chef ) moved to the Chance Inn in Guston, just outside Dover. A bit far to walk to this establishment from Dover though. Lovely welcome, helpful staff and fairly nice surroundings but not as atmospheric as the lovely White Horse building which is really old and full of atmosphere. No wonder the tourists love it. Great food. Cod, from St Mary’s Bay and chips great. Such competent pub cooking. Great homemade desserts. Anyway this place is highly recommended without hesitation.

We visited this excellent local pub for an early dinner & pint after sightseeing in Dover - a well appointed pub with very friendlty staff. Meals were fantastic & we enjoyed the local atmosphere & were made to feel very welcome). Very comfotable environment! Recommend!

Visited to see what it was like under new management. Impressed on every level. Friendly atmosphere, great service and great food. The food was amazing with all five of us having no complaints at all. Fresh food, made with quality ingredients and attention to detail. Overall 11 out of 10, will definitely be going back!

Came here for some Christmas Eve drinks. The place was warm, inviting, happy, and every one got along. The drink is very nice and very reasonable on price. Il definitely be coming back

Our family took 'a chance' on this pub and we were not disappointed. It is a lovely place, run by lovely people. Efficient friendly service and great food. We have returned many times over the years and have always felt at home.

Great pub in a quiet village with an amazing beer garden. Be prepared for lawn envy! Half of it is a nice little putting green and there's an outdoor bowling lane!

Friendly service, and the burger and chips were excellent, with just the right amount of Balsamic on the salad garnish. Only one real ale, London Pride, which was well kept. A shame it wasn't a beer from Kent, though. A cheerful place, with a pleasant garden.

Visited The chance inn when camping nearby. The service was attentive, the homemade pie of the day being chicken and ham was delicious. When we are camping agwe will return. Please support this little pub.

Great food, really friendly staff

One of the best dining experiences we've had the pleasure of. The food is excellent and the staff are great. It's situated quite close to Dover and should be a must visit for any tourists.

First time visiting the Chance and certainly won't be the last. Staff were very accommodating as we phoned and explained we were running late for our booking (sorry again!). Absolutely fantastic food, thoroughly enjoyed my burger and the kids loved the huge chips. Lovely, big portions but unfortunately no room for pudding on this occasion. Have recommended go family and we hope to all visit again soon... albeit on time! Thank you for a great lunch.

FINALLY.......found a pub that produces a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with honest, unfussy, reasonably priced food that is not too salty or small portioned. None of our party of 5 had any criticisms at all. The chips were flipping delicious. A most enjoyable evening. Thank you.

This is the second time we have visited The Chance Inn and the second time it has utterly impressed us. Greeted are soon as we entered and shown to our table. The food is stunning, plentiful, delicious, served in good time and reasonably priced. It's a beautiful traditional country pub with plenty of drinks choice and large beer garden to relax in the sunshine. What more could you ask for. Will definitely be returning for more. Many thanks

Visited twice while visiting family nearby. Once on Good Friday evening and again on Easter Sunday for lunch. Lovely cosy little pub with a friendly atmosphere. The landlady and locals made us feel very welcome. 10 of us went for lunch and the service was excellent. Great choice of food on the menu, and although we was a large group, nobody was waiting for course's and all was served promptly and together. Food was fresh and delicious. Would definitely recommend and will be back again next time we visit. Lovely big beer garden out the back too which was well kept. If visiting in the summer would definitely sit out there for a few pints!

My wife called last Saturday to book for a Sunday dinner the next day, after the food was recommended to us, she was greeted with a curt reply of ' we are fully booked ' at which the lady on the other end hung up...

We went to a wake here. The staff were lovely, and the food provided was well presented and tasty. The pub was cold, and I was surprised to see that although there was a log burner, it wasn't lit. The steps up to the toilets are very steep and narrow.

I went for lunch with a friend, although we had not booked they accommodated us, took hubby back on Saturday 9th October and had a lovely meal on both occasions, food is well cooked and plenty of it, hubby said the pie was gorgeous, so I will be trying that next time, we were recommended this pub by our daughter Jo and her hubby Dean and we were definitely not disappointed, we shall be back
