The Chairmakers in Winchester

First time visiting the Chairmakers with friends for Sunday carvery. The food was absolutely delicious! I had gammon, pork and beef which melted in my mouth, the roasties were so crispy! The best roast dinner I’ve been out for. Dessert was also lovely! Service was great with very friendly and efficient staff. Highly recommended and would definitely go again

What a truly wonderful little place - I often visited when I was a young girl, with my Mum and Dad. At that time (mid teens) I really did not appreciate it and would spend more time feeding the ducks in the pub garden!! Fast forward a few years (40) and I revisited with my Family. Wonderful, fresh and local food cooked to the finest quality which as a table of 10 we all devoured, with all clean plates. Lovely old country pub with a really nice atmosphere and attention to details. Food was delicious- thank you Chef, we will be back.

Visited the pub as a half way point when meeting friends, very impressed with service and quality of the food. The homemade steak pie was exceptional and well worth the visit alone.

Had a table of 10 booked yesterday evening, a big thank you to the chef as all our meals were superb and the service was also good. A traditional country pub and restaurant far exceeded our expectations. Well done guys.

We together with another couple recently we into this pub / restaurant , and we all were not disappointed, our waiter showed us to our window table and given both food and drinks menus. We then ordered our food and drinks the drinks arrived first and our food arrived about 20 minutes after placing our order. All meals arrived hot hot and well presented, there was also a good atmosphere which lasted all our visit. Each one of us had an excellent meal, and will certainly come back. Anyone interested I would highly recommend that you book a table, if not you may be disappointed.

We visited on 18th August to celebrate my birthday with all my family. My only disappointment was the standard and range of vegetables. Under cooked carrots, mushy broccoli but brilliant swede. Sadly that was it. Run out of cauliflower cheese. No peas. So whilst meat and roast spuds were great rest not so good Would I go back maybe?

I love the Chairmakers and generally enjoy the food more than anything else. Normally the Sunday carvery. Only criticism about the food are the carrots and broccoli, which to my taste are not cooked long enough and Yorkshire puddings were near enough to burnt today but that’s a small observation. The booking for today was amended on the booking email but the staff on the door knew nothing about it. I booked the family area online but amended it to the main restaurant shortly after. It appears that even tho the reservation email you get when booking says that if there are any amendments, to reply on the same email, are not monitored. I did but it wasn’t picked up and we still sat and ate in the family area. Small problem but their emails need to be read and responded to!. Despite this. I will be booking again in the near future.

Fantastic food. I ordered a whitebait starter and the pork belly main, and I rate this as one of the best pub meals I’ve ever had. Excellent service too, and the prices were fine. Definitely recommended.

Went for lunch today. I haven’t been there for a long time (years). The food was high end prices, low-end pub grub. Really disappointing. My vegetarian burger came out with one slice of tomorrow (the core end) unmelted cheese (my husbands meat burger was all completely melted), one slice of lettuce and NOTHING else on it! No onion, no sauces, no nothing. We told them I wasn’t a vegan. But despite that my husbands burger came with a brioche bun, mine was a cheap, cardboard bun from the likes of Morrisons. It was accompanied by chips. No salad, no coleslaw, no nothing. One double gin and tonic and one Diet Coke was £14.50! Honestly, don’t bother. The prices were shocking and the quality was NOT there at all.

Absolutely superb carvery! First time I have been back since new management (always had great experiences here) and the service and food quality has not diminished, if anything it has improved. Every member of staff we spoke to was super friendly, especially the fabulous guy doing the carvery 😁. The quality of the food was excellent, all the meats were tender. The roast potatoes were the best. 100% recommend.

Ate here for the first time since the new owners have taken over. Roast was extremely tasty and very filling. Only problem was that cauliflower cheese was £3.50 extra for a small dish. Definitely not worth the money. Cauliflower was al dente, which is ok, but only some cheese on top. No sauce. Very disappointing. Service was ok but had to ask for dessert menus and more drinks. No one came round to check meals were ok.

Our first carvery since the new management took over. First class. Absolutely perfect roast dinner. Amazing beef and perfect roast potatoes. Great service. We will now return regularly. Thank you. 👏 👏 👏

Firstly I would like to say that the food was amazing. Could not fault it. The service on the other hand was appalling. We had to ask for everything, the menus, for our table to be cleared,for empty glasses to be taken away and for cutlery to eat our food. All this was usually accompanied with some eye rolling. Would definitely think before booking here again.

We called in on the off chance of getting a table. The lady who booked us in made us very welcome, and we were seated at table 15 in the bar within minutes. We had the carvery, great choice of beef, belly pork, gammon. All beautifully cooked ,so tender , good selection of vegetables. Highly recommend it. The Carver was a really polite friendly guy .

As soon as we walked in the door , the staff were nothing but amazing! The chef on the carvery was so polite and friendly. The food was incredible and best roast I’ve had locally for a long time . Fabulous experience.

We went with friends for Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday. The quality and taste of the food was excellent. Service was efficient although I did think they liked to rush people a little. It is a carvery which is rare nowadays and of course you get people who load up their plates and they need help to get the plate back to the table 😄 To sum up it was delicious and well worth it.

Popped in for Sunday carvery roast not been in a while I think it’s changed hands the meat on carvery was very tough beef pork very fatty and gammon tough as well the overall roast has gone down hill my opinion the roast at ferryboat far superior

Its been a while since we've eaten here and the last visit was very disappointing, well something has definitely changed. Thankfully we had booked as it was very busy, it was Sunday lunchtime so there was a carvery. Apart from our granddaughter we all had the carvery and we weren't disappointed, the meat was lovely , cooked to perfection , hot and really tasty , a good selection of veg , our granddaughter had macaroni cheese which also looked really good. The sticky toffee pudding was the best ever. we will be going back.

Really disappointing meal. Very few customers, kept waiting to order, veg cold on delivery, lamb tough, however WE were told should have come and reported it but in fact nobody in the empty restaurant came to check if all was satisfactory - poor service. Did not feel very welcome and will not be returning.

Very nice meal overall a bit pricey and they could improve on the fish batter as i found this to be a bit flat and greasy, even wetherspoons can manage this.

We visited this pub when we found kitchens closed at the pub we’d booked. Staff were brilliant & accommodating finding us a table despite being busy. Turned away at 19.45 on Friday 23rd April, we drove all the way out to the chair makers as online stated closing 21.30 but we didn’t even make it through the gate before the owner said we’re Closed when we asked if we could have a seat, felt very disappointed so beware before driving out seems they let who they want in if your face fits Shame on you Chair makers as I was going to book a birthday bash for 6 of us !!

Visited today for a family lunch (including the dog). Everything was covid compliant throughout our visit. They gave us a little blanket for our dog to lie on, a bowl of fresh water and even asked if he was allowed a little bonio treat. He was thoroughly spoilt! Menu had loads of selection and we were torn what to order. The food was hot and delicious and every plate was empty at the end! Staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommended

Stopped off spontaneously and what a delightful hour. The garden was lovely, well thought out and looked after with a very pleasant and immaculate under cover area. All the staff were very welcoming and the food was perfect. We intend to make this a regular outing. Thank you.

We had a really lovely visit to The Chairmakers. They have got a great set up for Covid safe dining. Everything was nice and easy from booking to our arrival. The marquee was really cosy with plenty of heaters and lovely cosy lighting.Food was delicious and it was a really lovely chilled atmosphere.I highly recommend and am looking forward to visiting again

Booked a meal for myself and my support bubble for Thursday evening , I live alone and have chosen my mum and dad and brother who all live under the same roof as my other household for my bubble , walked into pub said my name was challenged straight away by man at front desk that your not a household which is fine I understand he must ask , I told him no but this is my chosen bubble household his reaction to this was since December 2nd the rules has changed and that you can't visit a pub with your bubble , which surprised me to be honest , he did not say we could not enter due to the fact he did not believe we were a bubble at any point just that under new rules bubbles could not enter pubs etc only each other houses , he them said we could have a table at our own risk obviously believing that he should know the rules he scared us into not wanting to stay ! after looking over the rules he is totally in the wrong and should have known the rules , Poor show !!!

Having not visited this pub for quite a while we decided to visit today for a change. To be honest we were quite shocked by the number of negative things we saw relating to Covid. We sat in the bar area and firstly noticed that tables and chairs were far too close. Definitely not even 1.5 metres apart generally speaking.This made us feel quite on edge. We then noticed there were cushions on the chairs which are obviously touched by customers and cruet items already on the tables. This is the very first pub where this has been the case that we have visited during the pandemic.All other places without exception now have salt, pepper,sugar etc in disposable paper sachets.Not ideal but obviously a far more hygienic option. The next thing we saw was a blanket used on the floor for customer’s dogs being picked up, folded then put on a pile of other blankets presumably for the next dog owner to use !! Finally although the layout of this pub would easily have lent itself to operating a one way system for entering and leaving the building this system was not implemented.Just an observation but they also obviously prefer dogs here to children. They have notices displayed advising no children in the bar area but dogs believe it or not have their own menus for ‘Dog Dinners’ quite bizarre. Although I know badly behaved children can be an irritation I know which I’d prefer nearby when I’m eating!!

We went for dinner on a Thursday evening. It was fairly quiet when we arrived at 6.30.p.m. but was much busier by the time we left. We had read some of the reviews which suggested service could be better. For us the food was very good and plentiful. The waiter and waitress who looked after us were attentive and friendly. A very good experience. All Covid 19 precautions were in place

Absolutely awful! I went here for lunch with my husband and two daughter, we all ordered steak, my husbands steak was lovely, my daughter was a tad over cooked but it was ok. Mine was supposed to be medium rare but it came out well done, I asked politely if they can maybe cook me another steak to my liking ( medium rare ) which the lady was more than happy to do. When I got the plate back... the new steak was literally blue. The blood ran out of the steak like a burst artery. I took it to the front to say this isn’t medium rare.. the owner came marching over telling me that the steak was perfect and was medium rare, with that he snatch the plate from the side and stormed off to the kitchen whilst speaking to me very abruptly saying “ you can have your money back “ Then after I was rudely spoken to.. I went back to my table ( upset ) to which he storms back over to me and my husband and says again “ you can have your money back and there was nothing wrong with the steak!” I said to him that he was being very rude, his reply was “ I’m not getting in a argument with you! “ then walked back off ‍♀️ I can honestly say that’s the worst experience I’ve had in a establishment that services food! I then went to the white heart down the road for something to eat.. told the staff there what happened... to be then told.. they’ve heard this a lot about the man that runs the Chairmakers!!
