Absolutely loved this pub! My family popped in for a pint after a late night walk and my son spotted the dart board. The barman could not have been more helpful- moving tables and even getting the mat out for my boys to play darts. We felt so welcomed, so much so that we went back the following night for dinner- which was amazing! The food here is fantastic and so fresh(my scampi was caught that morning!) great atmosphere and we were made to feel very at home there. We will definitely return!

What a lovely evening we had at the Castle Inn. My dad took us here while we was on holiday. The food was absolutely fantastic, all home made and delicious. Their was 5 people in our party and all 5 of us cleaned our plates, and said it was the best pub meal we had in a long time, and really nice sized portions too. The evening was topped off with incredible hospitality. The young gent who served us, was efficient and extremely friendly, he could not do enough for us. He really is a credit to the Inn and I wish more people was like him, in the industry. I really wish we had got his name, so the pub can know what an amazing job he did🥰

Lovely pub. We booked a Sunday lunch in early Jan and the pub was very quiet which was a shame. We got the feeling the pub would be great with a buzz when full!! The barman was new I suspect as he got the drinks wrong but it wasn’t a big problem! Food was very good indeed I spite of small numbers! Can’t really fault the place at all and it was a shame it was so quiet but that’s just how it is! Give this place a go! It’s good

A nice pub but it was empty when we went in for Sunday lunch. The owner had the golf commentary blaring from a phone in his pocket As he walked around which was annoying. Sunday lunch was plentiful but a bit tasteless which was a shame. We went past in the evening and it looked pretty lovely with fairy lights up and more people inside.

Would definitely recommend. We (6 adults, 2 children and a dog) just had a lovely home cooked meal. Generous Portions and reasonably priced. Not a quick reheat pub but an actual lovely freshly cooked meal. Well worth a small wait, totally expected as you cooked the meal. We had between us a Roast, Pie, Lasagne, Hunters chicken, Burgers, Sausage and chips. All lovely. As was the desserts. Staff were busy - it was Easter Sunday. But they were attentive, welcoming and always smiling. Thank you.

We were greeted with a good welcome then my drink came which was off but was asked if I would like a different drink which I did I couldn’t complain about that. I ordered the pork roast which was not very hot and very fatty and I would say undercooked when the older gentleman came to take the plates said are these finished I said yes and it wasn’t amazing his reply was ok and walked off, most pubs would say what was the problem but no . When we when to pay usually you would get sorry you didn’t enjoy your meal etc. we paid with no please or thank you from him he needs to change his profession because customer service was not good . We then went to the The church House inn for a pint and was welcomed with excellent service and a smile

Only one member of bar staff on a busy Saturday evening - serving, pulling pints, taking orders, waiting tables, delivering food and making up bills. She’s brilliant but where is the management? Later joined by one other young lady who had been working elsewhere. I don’t know why she didn’t throw in the towel and walk out. I think that she deserved the wages of the 2 other staff members who phoned in sick at opening time in addition to her pay! Why did the landlord and landlady allow this to happen? Really unfair to put someone in this position.

We decided to have a drink for the walk back which turned into two drinks. We was hoping they would take pity on us and feed us for the return walk. Took my partner and our dog (a springer) into the pub as it was advertised as dog friendly with other dogs at the bar. Bought a pint and sat down only to be told shortly afterwards that my dog couldn't sit with me on a chair (bizarre behaviour as other dog friendly bars actually expect this considering they welcome dogs) so I told my dog to sit on the floor. After another couple of minutes I was told to take him outside as he was sniffing other dogs (again, how is this dog friendly?) So we sat in the beer garden. Absolutely astounded a "dog friendly pub" kicked us out for bringing a dog! Really false advertising and regretted buying a overpriced pint and supporting this rubbish. Absolutely not going again and would not recommend to other couples who want a quiet pint with their furry friends.

Stopped off with a large group after a canoeing trip, lovely range of drinks and a friendly, local crowd made for a great atmosphere. A lovely, picturesque outside area allowing you to take in the stunning views of Devon. The tremendous landlady tried booking us several taxis back to where we were staying in Totnes however the taxi firms were unable to accommodate. At this point, customer service was taken to a whole new level as the landlady herself helped drive us home in separate trips, which allowed some of the group time for a competitive game of pool. Would definitely recommend to groups or if you fancy dropping in for a pint on your ones.

Went here with my parents last week, was able to get a table the same today and consent given for number to be used for their track and trace records. My parents aren't easily pleased customers and they came away super happy! We were looked after by a lovely lady (think her name was Kez?) who couldn't do enough for us and made us feel very welcome. Good selection of drinks and staff were very attentive to make sure we never had an empty glass for long. We had starters and mains, both of which were very generous portions so gutted I couldn't sample their desserts as I'm such they'd have been equally as wonderful. My parents had the lamb shank special and I had the ham, egg and chips. Both parents loved their food and it was beautifully cooked and served. Mine was delicious, the ham was lean and tasty and the eggs cooked exactly as I'd requested! So glad we passed this place on holiday and if we ever return to the area I'm sure we'll be back eating here too.

So delighted tonight to find a pub within walking distance of the lovely B and B we found in Stoke Gabriel. Good first impressions, decoration and good variety of choices on the menu, including vegan (a boon in a country pub!). The young waitress was very friendly and informative. On requesting the vegan curry to be mild she even came back to us after confirming this was ok with the kitchen, so I have no doubt that our request was made to the chef. A full hour later (!) our food arrived. The mild vegan curry was so hot that neither me nor my daughter could eat it (my veg tart was pleasant enough). Alongside this disappointment, we felt so incredibly sorry for the aforementioned young waitress who was single handedly running the restaurant service, billing and making of deserts. The other staff who were standing behind an empty bar should feel ashamed of themselves and also responsible for this poor review of a pub with so much potential. The pub was by no means full so I cannot imagine why they do not offer the currebt ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, this was a further disappointment.

Our family group of eight visited for Sunday lunch on a blustery and pretty damp day. There had been a tremendous gale the night before, so whether everyone was hunkered down indoors I don't know, but the pub was nearly empty which surprised me. All started well, our waitress was so nice, and although only roast meals were on the menu, we had known that and it suited us well. It was all very pleasant, although there were some comments that the meat wasn't that tasty. However things went a bit downhill when we all ordered different puds (mostly ice-cream combinations), and it became obvious the young waitress had to make and serve all these on her own. Consequently there was a long wait, with the first servings appearing so long before the last, that some of us had finished before others had started. We felt this was disappointing, given that there were several other 'staff' standing around in various places. It spoilt the otherwise enjoyable occasion, and I'm afraid most of the family said they would not return. We shall see - I would give it another chance.

Having previously enjoyed our meal at The Castle Inn some time ago we decided to return. Unfortunately our experience this time did not live up to our expectation. It happened to be a Curry & Quiz night but the normal menu was available which we thought would be fine but we found it uninspiring and did not think there was such a wide choice as previously. Because we were hungry and felt too tired to go elsewhere we ordered our food and it came very quickly. Although we ate our meals we cannot say we particularly enjoyed them. I do not often have to write a poor review but this was one of those occasions.

As it was Sunday, I fancied a roast! I was offered pork or beef, my wife ordered the pie of the day. Shortly after ordering I was told that a party of ten had pre-ordered the roast and there weren’t any roast potatoes left for me. I was offered mash, which I refused. I ordered pie of the day instead. It was a steak and ale pie and quite honestly it was dire. The meat was cubes of hard, pre-cooked beef. Some of the chips weren’t cooked through and the broccoli was virtually raw. I like my vegetables crisp but not raw. We paid and left. I didn’t feel like complaining, I just wanted to go.

Bob and Bec's will make you most welcome. A great range of beers and i must say the Jail Ale was superb. The food was delicious with good portions and a great selection from the menu. Bec's chicken curry is a must if available as was the Sunday roast. Dog friendly is an understatement. Our Lola was made very welcome with treats on offer at the bar and settled in no problem. A real village pub with very friendly locals. We were out exploring most days with a lot of good info on where to go from the locals. Cannot wait to go back and see everybody again soon.

Just got back home after calling in to this pub for the first time. Arrived at 2pm and asked what they could offer for a vegan. They have a new chef called Debs who was so accommodating. She knocked up a delicious vegan burger with onion ring, a side salad, flavoured rice, olives and marinated carrots. Very friendly people here, not gourmet food but good honest pub grub at a very reasonable price.

What a shabby experience we had at The Castle Inn, Stoke Gabriel, Devon! A beef-burger order was inedible because of the ghastly, cheap taste, : childrens’ orders: one contained a hair, the other had a bone in the fish goujon, ‘the roast turkey’ was sliced from tinned meat, and the ham was from a catering tin. There wasn’t any Manager-intervention regarding our dissatisfaction, and we had to pay - for the dis-pleasure of dining at what we THOUGHT would be a reputable venue!!! (The Castle does NOT have a car park but The Church Inn does. Go there instead!).

A good village pub serving excellent beer and good food. We had a really good Sunday lunch with home cooked food well presented, plentiful and tasty. The only think I would amend is to serve the gravy in a boat, rather than pre-poured.

It was Bank Holiday Monday. The usual chef was not on duty but we were made very welcome and had a good meal. The Landlord even gave my son in law a free drink for his birthday which was the same day as his. We will definitely go again soon.

We went in for a simple drink & food for 2. 7pm & pub quiet. We ordered & Sat for 30 minutes waiting. We reminded staff about our food. After an hour we kicked up a fuss. Especially as the people after us had already been served.

Currently sitting in The Castle Inn after eating very nice ham, chips and egg. My other half enjoyed the curry. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and food came quickly enough but also took long enough so you knew it was cooked from scratch. Very child friendly as only on two levels with two smallish steps. There are children of all ages at four of the five occupied tables. We will be back for more.

Found this inn when we were driving through the village, so took the number down and called to book a table. When we arrived, the bar was packed with locals, all of whom seemed to have a dog and one of the locals offered a very friendly welcome. Interestingly, the bar pretty much emptied around half seven!

Our 1st night here at Stoke Gabriel, needed some-thing to eat, I had the salmon, mediterranean veg with crispy herb potatoes £12.95, the other half had a trio of Cumberland sausages mash and gravy £9.95 just what we needed all long with a good pint and a wine, all served by happy smiling staff, we sat in the beer garden just down the side of the pub, plenty of tables and chairs but not much room for children to play, there may well be another area for them, some parts are in the shade we needed that as it was sooo hot. Nice clean relaxed village pub, called again when the carnival was on very busy as you may expect but didn`t have to wait too long for our drinks. Good value for your money and to meet the village people.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
