We visited Compton castle, a National Trust property which did not have a tea room. Castle Barton cafe is right on the doorstep. We had a cream tea and a panini both of which were home made and excellent. The gardens were on a hillside and being a lovely day we sat outside.

I really liked it, but I didn't think i would. It felt like stepping into a vaguely faulty towers like living history experience. Set in its Georgian cottage with its 90s take on victorian country house decore. I presume it was restaurant in its day with optics of spirits and dining rooms layed out for evenings of prawn cocktails and steak dianes. The place hasnt changed in years, and the lady who runs it clearly lives and works in the house. But the tea and cakes were delicious. Fairly priced and honest! It's not Costa coffee because it's not trying to be! The panini and cream tea on the other table looked delicious. Our tea came in a pot with extra hot water, good tea bags, and lots of milk. The cakes were lovely and very well baked, presumably on site! Really was surprised. Don't judge this book by its covers, it's really nice.

Very disappointed. The Staff at Compton Castle recommended going over for a drink and something to eat. We wish we hadn't....... There was no warm welcome when we entered the Property. We ordered a Hot Chocolate and a Latte. The Lady told us which room was warmer as the heating was on. This room was next to the Toilet which had an awful smell coming from it. The room was dull and lifeless. After a bit of a wait the drinks arrived...... The Chocolate was nothing special. The sugar was hard inside the packet. The Latte was the worst one we'd ever had. Hardly any head of milk and the milk was burnt making it undrinkable. We told the Lady and she didn't seem to believe us but did say she would make another. This arrived just with a cup but no saucer. No real apologies and no Customer care by coming back and asking if everything was okay. Will bring our own drinks next time we go to the Castle.

After visiting Compton Castle, we decided to stop for some lunch. This is a quaint place and the staff were friendly. Two of us ordered a turkey panini, which was very filling and tasty, very nice touch with the crisps and side salad. Also ordered a baked potato, which my friend enjoyed. We also had coffees and a hot chocolate. Overall very nice relaxing place to eat. I would recommend if you are in the area.

Enjoyed an absolutely delicious Devon cream tea here on a rainy afternoon (would have been lovely to sit out in the garden on a sunny day). Good, friendly service too. This place is perfect for refreshments or something more substantial if you're visiting the NT's Compton Castle, which is just over the lane and doesn't have a tea shop or kiosk. It is old fashioned inside but don't let that put you off!

Bit of a climb up steps and a slope to get to it but well worth it when you see the beautiful listed building. There is also a holiday home attached to the restaurant. Wonderful family run tea room / cafe set in a beautiful setting, with lovely gardens & outside seating overlooking the woods and countryside around Compton Castle. The cakes and drinks were perfect on our visit, the people serving were friendly & welcoming and the interior was a traditional English tea room decor, timeless and charming in it's own unique way. Recommended to call in at especially if visiting Compton Castle across the road.

Went to visit Compton Castle and as they did not have refreshments there, we crossed the road to this lovely place. Prior to our timed visit, we had morning coffee which was really nice Dow Egberts served in a cafetiere. The waitress was the daughter of the owners and it was nice to be informed of the business they have there, with the cafe, restaurant and an outdoor catering business. We returned for lunch - a really nice baguette and a cream tea. The grounds were lovely, and everything was very English about the place.

My wife and I always like to go out for a Christmas meal before the big day – and Castle Barton never lets us down! The food is traditional home cooked produce served by smiling and friendly waitresses, the quality and quantity was just superb; and as I said to the Chef afterwards: “It was just like my Mum’s cooking!” – to which he replied that his Mum had taught him to cook and that was just what he always aimed for .. traditional home cooked food. The dining room was decorated in a beautiful and traditional way with no gaudy flashing lights but a picturesque scene of the 12 days of Christmas in one corner, and ornate décor around the warming open log fire. I cannot fault anything and the price for the two of us was incredible, long may Castle Barton be there to serve the local community (we are from Marldon!) PS: I hope they soon manage to get the access lighting up the front path sorted – the rain and wetness gets into everything!

I remember this very traditional Devon restaurant/tearoom from years ago, as it serves (amongst other things) as the refreshment stop for visitors to Compton Castle just opposite. The quality of the food (we both had lasagne followed by fruitcake and tea/coffee) is just first class, traditional and home-made, and it's not expensive at all. Very old-fashioned or retro (depending on your viewpoint) furnishings, all very clean and tidy and friendly service. Cream teas seemed very popular and were no doubt lovely as well.

My mum and I thought to go to Barton castle for some lunch, as we use to have such lovely Sunday lunch. We ordered a Tuna Jacket Potato which was beyond description. It was so dry the outer skin was black and flaky. Inside the potato was bright yellow. I was worried if it was safe to eat. My tuna was very soggy and was just swimming. The salad was clearly made the day before. My Mum had a Beef sandwich, the bread was dry on some parts, and again the salad was old. We got some cake thinking it would be better, however it tasted like it was made from a cake mix bag, just water. The Tea was undrinkable. Such a shame use to have a lovely Sunday lunch or snack, sadly it has gone downhill. Lovely setting, just so sad.

We’ve been visiting the cafe today as a family of 4 but were very disappointed with the long waiting times. We’ve ordered two kids lunch boxes, a panini and lasagne and some tea. The tea arrived 45 min later and our food took over an hour!!! We weren’t told this when we’ve ordered and the two people working there seemed to be very slow and a bit strange although nice enough. I think it’s never a good start when tables haven’t been cleared when you sit down. When our food finally arrived we were told that their fryers are slow and they’ve only got one. Well they should have told us before we’ve ordered! There were many upset customers today looking a bit puzzled, but at no point did the staff explain anything. Very annoying experience. The food was ok though.

We did wonder whether eating here was going to be a good idea but were pleasantly surprised. Firstly, it’s not particularly well advertised and had I not been looking for it could have been over-looked. The path and the outside are inviting but unfortunately, as rather a lot of the reviews on here have observed, it smelly funny, isn’t particularly clean and feels like you’re visiting an ageing relative. If we hadn’t have been starving we may well have left. The inside needs a damn good scrub and all the table cloths need putting on a boil wash. I didn’t use the facilities but it sounds like I have dodged a bullet. I did observe a 5 star food hygiene rating on the door so that was reassuring. I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to pay by card but you can - hurrah. Anyway, onto positive feedback now. The food was delicious. We had 2 cream teas (warm scones and a choice of flavours), a prawn mayo sandwich (which looked so scrummy I almost wanted to swap my scone for it - almost) and a kids meal deal. We also had some of the best cheesey chips I have ever eaten. In fact, it might be worth a return visit just for the chips. I think they are missing a trick here. There was just us and one other family eating at lunchtime in the middle of the school holidays. They were struggling to park people attending the national trust castle opposite, it was so busy. It should have been heaving. Clean it up, advertise it better. Winner.

We just called in for a quick cuppa, having visited the castle over the road, and gave in to temptation when we saw the cakes and other goodies just saying "Eat me!". The home made coffee & walnut cake was superb, just like Grandma used to make! Lovely and moist and a really generously sized portion too. A Devon cream tea was impossible to resist so we had one of each! The scones were delicious, also obviously home made and still warm, not too dry and with plenty of jam and lovely thick cream, No apologies for putting the jam on first though - Cornish style! The tea was very good - nice to find a tea room that isn't stingey with the tea bags! Definitely one for the "go back again" list.

This little tea room/restaurant is set across the road from the NT property Compton Castle. There is a small terrace with seating overlooking a pleasant garden, all shielded from the road and car park by trees and bushes. The interior of the property is like stepping back to the 1980's - probably the last time they decorated - so it's a bit tired and requiring an update. But don't let that put you off, the food is lovely and cooked to order. We will be visiting again.

We were visiting Compton Castle and decided to lunch here, the castle not having it's own cafe. The gardens were beautiful and well kept, offering great views from the terrace. You had to go inside to order and as it was a bit chilly, we initially decided to sit inside in the dining room - It was like walking through a time warp! The dining room was extremely dated, dark and empty. The table cloths were all dirty and there was a very musty smell. I used the ladies toilets and they were disgusting. There was mould growing up the door and they didn't look like they had been cleaned this century. As we had already ordered, we decided to move outside and the lunch was pleasant enough. However, I was rather worried about the level of hygiene given the state of the toilet and dining room! I would not go here again.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

The restaurant was quite Busy, we were served the staff are lovely, table was clean food is good. This review has nothing to do with that. Getting to the Toilets as a disabled person in a wheelchair is an nightmare, the path is very steep going down then you have to try and open the door or wait for someone to help. Then it's getting in through the door while trying to keep it open if you don't have anyone around to help you . Then you come to the disabled toilet and you have the same problem getting in and out is hard. I have spoken to the manager on duty today and he said he will bring it up at the next meeting with his manager all I can say is I hope so, it's a lovely garden centre but if you are disabled I wouldn't recommend coming to this garden centre unless you can hold your Toiletting needs for the Duration of your visit. The manager has said he's had people complain about the path a lot, but not getting into and out of the toilets, I myself am guiltily of not saying anything before because I'm embarrassed, but today I decided to say something and I'm glad I did. The staff are all lovely nothing is to much trouble, if you are able body it's a fantastic place to visit, and I will miss going. But going down that path today was quite frightening and before anyone Says anything my chair was on the Slowest speed any slower. And I wouldn't have been able to move but I was frightened and thinking. And I was gonna hit the back wall. I really hope this review helps people and the managers Does something .
