In the Dart valley to walk the dog downstream along a hefty stretch of the river to Totnes. Needed a lateish lunch along the way and called at what’s left of the Cider Press Centre expecting that we might not find a cafe that would admit the dog. So many of the businesses including much of the catering have closed but we found Bayard’s Kitchen open, well staffed with friendly welcoming efficient staff, a good menu and plenty of food on display as well as many busy tables and others free. We asked if we could take our food outside because we had the dog but were immediately told that dogs are welcome. We both had large hearty and tasty bowls of daal with crispy onions and vegan soured cream with flat breads probably naan. £10 each. Hot and cold drinks. But as we tucked in, he was offered enticing dog biscuits and as he finished they asked if he’d like a free Puppaccino which he did - with relish. Bayards has an enticing vibe, the food was good and in a pleasant setting. Pity that a lot of the Cider Press Centre seems to be shrinking and the merits and appeals of the few remaining creative and independent businesses are diluted by the gaps and reduced footfall.

Highly recommend the caramelised onion and cheddar scones, in my opinion they are baked perfectly. If my partners empty plate was anything to go by then the sweet counterpart is just as good. The accompanying coffee was tasty with rich, balanced notes coming through. The small kids play area is perfect at quite times but I can imagine it would get a bit hectic should several large families turn up at the same time. It's always good to see local produce on the menu, especially given all the high quality items originating from Devon.

Mum and I went for a snack lunch today. Have been coming to the Cider Press for years. The food in Bayards Kitchen is always amazing, but the service of one man in particular on the counter was cold, disinterested and quite frankly....rude! Not seen him there before. He was ignorant and arrogant in manner. Dreadful customer service and I wish I'd said something at the time now. All I expect is a smile and some eye contact.....I got neither. Its a shame as has put me off going in now.

Food is ok. Ladies are nice. But who is this underqualified man at the till who is the worst example of the catering/hospitality industry!? With his cold, no-smile-at-all attitude he makes sure you don't feel the warm welcome and when we leave he doesn't say a thank you and a bye, instead he properly turns his back! How rude and disgusting! I just laugh at him as we definitely aren't on the same level, but he can cause bad day for other customers. Fancied a cuppa and a slice of cake after a walk so popped in here. My husband had a coffee and a slice of Victoria Sponge (4.5 / 5) and I had a cheese and caramelised onion chutney scone (5/5). I like the coffee here very much but I find the price of danish pastries outrageously expensive. I don't know anywhere else in the whole of Totnes and district that would charge more than £3 for a croissant or pain au chocolat, whilst you charge more than £4. For that reason we always buy a toasted tea cake as it is better value for money.

Firstly, no complaints about the staff:I do object to drinking a cup of brown water, regular Americano, black, no milk or sugar, no taste of coffee whatsoever, served in a small cup: The cheese scone was difficult to swallow, extremely doughy. Total cost £7-30, It should not be difficult to serve good coffee, well over priced compared to other coffee houses in Totnes.

Came there for lunch today, and have to say my soup and cheese scone was delicious. However my friend who has dietary problems asked if she could have just scrambled eggs on toast a very easy dish to prepare, but was told NO.!! it wasn't on the menu could have poached egg or fried egg but not scrambled.... However after a discussion with the chef he decided to do this for her. I used to be in the catering profession myself for many years and have to say that I would never have treated a customer like that, would always have gone out of my way to accommodate, if he doesn't want to make scrambled eggs for a customer he shouldn't be a chef...!! Very disappointed.

We went there with 3 hungry kids for a late lunch after visiting wonderful Dartington Hall and estate... But: Food is overprized esp. considering small portions, but okay. NOT okay, though: to have a kids menue, pricey as well, which sounds nice but is lacklustre at best! A cold, small half sandwich, with a tiny piece of ham + 2,3 petit pieces of cucumber and pepper as salad. Check out price tag and flowery description of this sad ensemble on their menue if you so wish... Bottom line: Avoid, if possible, and go to Dartington Cafeteria or pub instead.

Live within thirty minutes of the cafe. But yesterday it had lost its way, sadly! Got our drinks and cheese scone order in. Then we took our drinks to the table. And waited and waited for scone to arrive… Almost 20 min later and tea now drunk. It arrived Microwave beyond Hot ! Yuck Butter packs had melted too . It was rubbery and not nice when we took a bite. So didn’t eat it. We were not asked if we wanted it warmed up as we would if said no. I mentioned it to a tall young man who was clearing tables. He said he would be back with a cold one… But that didn’t happen so we gave up after another ten min wait and went home. What a shame as this was our always go to on the way home from shopping in Totnes .

Thought we'd pop down to Dartington not been for a while, had a nice walk along the wooded paths so thought it was time for a spot of lunch. Just a light lunch of panini and a coffee, must say the coffee was delicious, as for the food well ok but well over priced for what you got. Now for the service. TERIBLE is the way I can describe it. As I said above the coffee was really good so I thought I'd have a second cup. After ordering/ paying and about a 20 minute wait, still no coffee arrived, I went to the counter and asked a member of staff what is the delay, seemed they lost my order, she had to check the till ( they still couldn't find my order slip ). Eventually they found my order in the system. Now wouldn't you think that now after at least half an hour had elapsed one of the staff would prioritise my coffee. No! not the case in fact the woman making the coffee's started on a large to go order. A couple on the next table could not believe what was happening and suggested they should compensate me for the lack of professionalism. Would we go back or recommend this cafe I'm afraid not.

The new manager behind the counter informed me she has never seen a gluten free menu since she started. But offered me the vegan option from the menu. Which I'm not sure why she thought that was a good option. So thought I'd go with the chips option to find you no longer offer these either. Was very disappointed and won't be returning. They sell scrummy food at reasonable prices. The Friendly staff somehow cope with a mountain of customers who, despite queuing for ten minutes, have no idea what they want when they get to the till. This unnatural level of patience subsequently results in delays to actually making the food and a comedy wait for food when ordered.... but tbh all adds to the atmosphere of the diner.

What's happened to this place? Been here many times but today was awful. I booked a table for two and there was a bit of confusion where to sit us, once seated we were waiting ten minutes for our drinks (which initially went to the wrong table) were told our food orders would be taken separately, which they were around ten minutes later. We got our food 50 minutes after arriving. It was luke warm and the chips were hard and dry, the 'gammon' was little more than a slice of bacon, the chicken breast was small and dry. We left half of our meal. When asked if everything was ok I said the food wasn't as it should be, the waitress reported back to the manager who offered a free drink, but we declined as we had to leave (given that we had already been kept waiting). I paid £35 for two soft drinks and two main meals which were all but inedible. The waitress was lovely and apologetic which stopped me taking it further. So disappointed with the visit, I have been ripped off. Maybe it was an off day, but I don't think I will be returning anytime soon, and certainly not for food.
