Visited for a Sunday roast, after having roasts in other places over time. ( better service than some other chains) Wanted a no fuss roast dinner. Pub was quiet which was nice. Roast beef dinner was lovely, not a great deal of it and a little more roast potatoes who have been fantastic. Would eat there again. Janet

Booked for 3 people to have Sunday roast, table was booked all fine and seated on arrival, took awhile for service to come and take drinks order note. Bar staff were just talking amongst themselves, ordered our food asking for starters too arrive with mains at the same time so we could try all together, didn’t happen, staff were obviously new and had no prior training and weren’t overseen by supervisor. In regards to the food and value for money was extremely poor, was 1 of everything, when you expect a Sunday roast you would anticipate a loaded plate of food….this was not the case. Food quality was great, can’t knock that part. But being served 2 and a half roast potatoes felt like an insult charging £17 per dinner with minimal quantity I found to lack enthusiasm to return. When the table was cleared we had the bill handed to us without asking, staff then started sweeping under our feet and cleaning where people on the table next to us had made mess and bumping into one of our party in the process showed clear lack of training/courtesy. Shame for such a lovely pub and good food they fall down on customer service and satisfaction.

Booked on a whim as we wanted a Sunday roast. Have driven past multiple times and thought we should try it. The beef roast was lovely. Just the right amount of food. Being honest the pub was very quiet on arrival but this proved to be to our benefit. We ordered the food and it was with us in about 10 minutes. The beef was clearly from a decent sized piece as the pieces we received were a good size and plenty of it. Service was also good from the bar staff and the chef popped out to check all was good with our food. We will certainly be coming back.

Quite an exceptional place. The food was very tasty and you can tell that care had been taken over it to ensure it was flavoursome. The service was spot on and we were especially impressed by the young Indian student who was serving. Lovely atmosphere inside the dining area, clean and tastefully decorated. Well worth visiting .

Just been for Sunday lunch to celebrate my daughters birthday. The service was terrible. There was just one person trying to do everything. He had no chance of providing a good service. The food was late and the quality was very poor. The roast beef was inedible the potatoes and vegetables weren’t cooked properly. I had the beef burger but that was just a frozen burger badly cooked. The roast chicken was ok but had the same difficulties with the potatoes and vegetables. My youngest daughters sausage and chips didn’t come with the peas as advertised. The fish and chips were the only thing that was ok. The food was overpriced. The pub was cold. We weren’t offered any condiments or sauces. After I complained they took 3 meals off the bill which I then paid only to realise that a 12.5% service charge was included!!!! The Castle is a lovely pub but recently the food and service has been very very poor. You can’t build a good reputation by apologising for poor quality. If you are going to charge £17.50 for a Sunday roast it should be edible. I won’t go back until it has improved and I would not recommend to anyone.

We had never been before and left it late to book for Sunday lunch… this pub came up on Opentable and we decided to check it out with friends. The chicken roast was really good, full of flavour and good quality food. The service was good and we didn’t have to wait too long at all. The pub seemed quiet empty which was surprising considering how good the roast was. We will defiantly be back

A last minute decision to eat out and remembered a Facebook notification advising of a new menu at The Castle. Always a friendly welcome and tonight was no exception. Hubby had the pulled pork scotch egg- looked amazing - lovely runny egg inside and Mr said it was very tasty too. I had the chicken and trufffle croquettes- yum! Tasty tender chicken inside. Followed up with the mushroom linguine-again very much enjoyed. I had the seafood linguine- lovely sweet tender mussels, prawn and beautifully cooked salmon in a gorgeous sauce. Not a bad Thursday night out. Will be back soon

We went here today for lunch with friends who had recommended it and they had returned several times. The food was amazing. I am coeliac and the chef went above and beyond to ensure the dishes I had were gluten free. I can't understand why the place isn't packed because you'd only need to go once and want to return. I really would recommend you give it a try. Everything is freshly made and so so tasty.

I have used this pub for over 12 years when I am the area. I feel sorry for the new owners (since covid) The Pub tries hard and the Staff generally do their best, but this pub is way too expensive for its location. A single Gin and Tonic is over £9. On my visits It is mostly empty except for late afternoon when it gets the "quick pint on the way home crowd". The food is not good enough or consistent enough for the price either. IMHO This place needs to get back to being a reasonably priced pub serving affordable traditional British pub food, consistently good every time.

What a delicious meal..my entire family honestly loved it! Our server, Angelika, was really friendly and pleasant with my 2 children. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food. We ordered starters and mains. The starters were large so would be easily shared by 2 people. For mains we ordered veg sabo, lamb dry red chili and a bowl of noodles to share. Had never tried this dish before, but it was absolutely delicious! Portions were very good. It was quiet inside the pub, but people were sitting outside enjoying the weather and eating / drinking. Was so nice that it was a different menu than normal pub food.. the menu is extensive so needed help to choose what to order. Was very pleased with Angelika's recommendations and will make a point of travelling back to this pub when I'm in the area to try something else from the menu :) The pub also advertised a curry night on a tuesday: this looked very good value. There was a lot of vegetarian choice which is also refreshing. Only thing to improve is that it would be helpful if menu highlighted which options were vegan etc. Cant wait to return!!

We are closed again for the second lockdown. We went for a final pub supper and Josie the landlady told us that they were going to do takeaway during lockdown - both food and drinks. We decided to order the lamb and chicken curries. It was ready waiting and hot and very very tasty and we were delighted with the service. We'll be going back for takeaway again and will be working our way through the takeaway menu. This pub has exceptional curries and we recommend anyone who loves curries to go and sample them. We decided to venture out for an early pub supper at the Castle. It was the day that the rules had changed yet again and we had to wear masks when standing up in the pub and take them off when seated. The pub is great, the staff are friendly and the service was efficient and the food as good as it used to be in the past. There were 4 tables of people and the tables were all social distancing apart but we were able to see and hear how other diners were enjoying their meals. Having Read the review from 4 weeks ago from a ‘non local’ who felt they were treated differently I felt I should add my experience, having never stepped in to the pub before this Wednesday we were treated no differently to anybody else in the pub, when we got to the pub it was fairly busy and wasn’t any free tables, we asked to sit on the end of a table (which later seemed to all be locals) and they were more than friendly and accommodating! Later my girlfriend joined us and my friends left, we decided to give the food a go as the menu looked good, proper PUB food, we were asked by the very attentive staff if we wanted table service (even tho we were just sat in the bar) which we declined! The food was good, cooked well and the portions were very good (I’m a big eater and I was full after.... which is rare) lolIf you like a proper pub, proper pub food (it’s not a Michelin restaurant) good atmosphere and friendly staff then definitely give this pub a go, we went for a drink this evening and again very quickly served and felt welcomedWe’ll be back more and more

Came here for a family meal, the food was delayed, the waiter was unapologetic so asked to speak to the manager, who i believe was the landlord. She was even more unapologetic, rude, and clearly unexperienced within customer service. The pub is outdated but the menu looked good so we thought we'd give it a chance, but no good food could make up for the clique atmosphere of the 'locals' who obviously hate anyone they don't know, and the staff clearly aren't interested in serving anyone but them. Would not recommend unless you're one of those locals as you'll be treated like you shouldn't belong there and it's an incredibly awkward atmosphere for anyone who isn't a regular.

Great roast at the Castle - have always put off going before as had heard negative things about it being a bit "clicky" and newbies were not made welcome by the previous manager - however, we found it the opposite (under new management). Lovely staff and they couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Roast chicken was to die for and the beef looked good too, veg and potatoes cooked to perfection. Also a very reasonable price of £12.50 which makes a nice change from the silly prices pubs usually charge. The beer is fresh, vaired and expertly delivered. The new offerings are a joy to behold. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The pate starter is a triumph and as others have stated the steak and ale pie is the real deal, if you can make sure you save some room for a sublime desert. The brownie is a show stopper. The South African wine is the perfect tipple and packs a punch. If you are in the area and want an honest home cooked meal I can hand on heart recommend the Castle as a cracking pub. Good work guys! Greeted with smiles, the cellar has been updated to keep the good selection of ales in top condition and the new wine list features a good house selection served in great new glasses. A new innovative menu will return the pub back to its reputation as one of the best local eateries.

Recently under new ownership, Josie and her team have brought the Pub back to life with great atmosphere, fresh food and a long list of yummy wines and gins to choose from. Looking forward to seeing their successes in the future.

Quite a lot going on with this pub. Very much a local and will stay that way but the new management will open it up and change the menu. Excellent Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Looking forward to some good food and interesting times.

We have visited loads of times. They are normally pretty good, although slightly odd! On this occasion we phoned ahead (8pm) to check what time the kitchen closes (9pm) and agreed that we would phone 15 minutes beforehand to place the order; no problem. We were driving up from Brighton, hence phoning ahead! I phoned at 8:40 and the kitchen was closed - all of the kitchen staff had been sent home. Gutted and surprised that what used to be a good local pub has entered in to cost saving measures.

Stopped here because it is close to the M25. Good, generous traditional pub food and friendly staff but more importantly, any pub serving Timothy Taylor's Landlord gets my vote! Parking available at the rear if the front car park is full.

Thought we would give The Castle another chance having been served an awful lunch previously. Had a Halloumi and Avocado salad and a ploughmans. Salad very average no choice if dressing just offered something a creamy brown colour in a bottle. However most disappointing ploughmans. 2 slices of pre packed ham a slab of Brie and a slab of cheddar a pot of Branston and a few silverskin onions. All served with a slice of somewhat stale bread. Complained to staff no offer to change and nothing mentioned when ploughmans left untouched. Nice pub for a quick drink but not the food. Sorry it wasn't just the once!

We first went to this pub a couple of years ago and what a little gem, the Sunday lunch is amazing, good value for money, the staff are great with the exception of one female bar person who I think has had a personality by pass as she doesn’t smile and seems miserable but don’t let her put you off. Since going to the pub for Sunday lunch we often go there mid week for dinner which is also lovely, so hats off to the chef. Great place and well worth a visit

I use this pub regularly. It is not the nearest to me, in fact I have to walk 6 miles to get there. Sunday lunch is just epic. The beef is the best I know of, almost up to Simpsons in their heyday, and that is saying a LOT. The roast pork is also very good. The beer and cider are well kept and the landlord is friendly. Quirky, but a really nice chap.

Up to Ottershaw for a couple of days for some DIY (Dad It Yourself) at our daughter's, which meant the compulsory The Castle evening again. So an hour watching the last half of the last 6 nations game for this year, meeting the best friend that I didn't know I had with long discussions about the game not being what it was when WE played, (that would be about 30 years ago, sadly :) ), and then into the main bar for the best steak and ale pie you will ever find, anywhere, and even compliments from my hard to please wife about a super-sized jacket potato with excellent chilli filling. Had to apologize to the ladies on the next table who ordered the steak pie to be told they had just run out! Thankfully, they accepted the news with good grace. If it had been the other way round I would probably have had steal their plates away from them! I just love this place. Always such friendly and helpful staff and management too. I wish I could move to Ottershaw so I could have my treat every week here.

Yes, I may be biased as I use it as my local. The beer is always well kept, although a little expensive. The food is very good with a number of fresh specials daily. The steak and ale pie is to die for. You just have to ignore the landlord's sense of humour (or lack of it).

I spent an hour in Foodie Paradise here on wednesday night. Myself and my daughter ordered the Steak and Ale Pie. I, at nearly 66 years of age, can put my hand on my heart and say this was the best Steak Pie I have ever eaten in my life, even my dear old long departed Mum, who did Steak and Mushroom pie to entice me to visit and give her a lift to the Bingo Hall. Add to the steak pie that the lovely ladies went out of their way to get me a side order of fried mushrooms not even on the menu, a very much enjoyed Chicken Ceasar salad for my quite choosy wife, and a very nice bottle of Proscecco enjoyed by wife and daughter, and all was good with the world. Lovely, friendly, helpful ladies at the bar, thank you so much!!

I've lived near this pub for 30 years and haven't been in this pub for a long time as I heard it was a clicky pub with a rude landlord. I thought surely he can't be that bad so I'll give it a go for a quick early evening drink after working from home that day. I was refused service for not being a regular. Then was insulted and sworn at by the landlord. I promptly left. In my opinion it's run down old mans pub not suitable for women, children or families. If you like somewhere with a bit of class avoid like the plague.

We wondered why we booked but this place quickly filled up at lunch timeThere's a decent enough range of beers with Landlord and Doom Bar as specialsThe menu doesn't have anything earth shatteringly amazing on it but does have all the pub classics. Between us we tried a ham, chicken, leak pie (that came with a monster top), a fish pie, and fish and chips. All the meals came quickly and were well portioned. Decent value too,Nice place, would probably be a good local if I lived nearer!!!

After reading the very inviting comprehensive website I called to make a breakfast reservation in The Lounge at 9.30am. I was told by a very supercilious telephone operator that this is not possible ...it is 1st come 1st serve before 12.30pm which is not listed on the very comprehensive website.I then asked for other options and was told very superciliously that there were none.I expressed my disappointment in this not being listed on said website and she didn't give a darn. Well shes getting paid regardless.
