Great pub with a fab atmosphere seen a few live acts here recently and they have been fantastic

Full marks for the food - really good. Three stars for service & atmosphere only when uncle Fester is 'wearing' his smile behind the bar. Try and come when he's not skulking...ahem...I mean serving? It's hard to tell.

Planned family event. Good old fashioned pub. Friendly staff. Buffet organised beforehand. Good spread and plenty of it.

A proper community pub. Such a brilliant atmosphere and every event is welcoming. It’s family run and the bar staff are all very friendly and pour an excellent pint.

0/5 stars for Customer Service. First time attending the pub as my family have moved to the area. Went inside the pub to go to use the toilets as we were sat outside. Male member of staff asked if I was okay I explained I was looking for the toilet he replied "IT WOULD BE POLITE TO ASK" in an aggressive and angry manner. He then dissapeared before I could explain I'm a customer. Disgusting behaviour towards a young woman, you should be ashamed.

Great local pub in the heart of Handbridge, good food and drink to be had, along with a warm welcome from the staff.

Celebrated our daughters 1st birthday 🎂 with 20 guests .Food was outstanding along with the customer service. We stayed over at the lodge in their grounds which was above and beyond our expectations.

The roast dinner is absolutely beautiful.Ordered a delivery several times and the food has been perfect. Great home cooked Sunday dinner. Delivery has always been fast,cannot find fault in anything.

First time back in about 8 years and still a good friendly pub. Prices good as well. As Arnie says " I will be back"

A quite Sunday chilling with great beer. The real ale was spot on and well kept. If you in the area pop in it will be worth it. They have live music every Friday and are only a short walk from the centre of Chester.

The Carlton has been a hidden gem for many years. Pool table, juke box, daily food specials, entertainment… always a great venue to choose any day of the week. Glad to see you guys still going strong throughout these difficult times. Keep up the good work!

Much improved since my last rating a while ago, decent pint, heard they had a few issues with cooling and the cellar etc, seems to be sorted. Live mike night on a Tuesday if you like your music. 👍

It’s hard to find a good vegan option outside of the city centre but the food is spectacular. Although that is not the best thing about The Carlton Tavern. Debbie and Gordon make the visit by making you feel welcome and going above and beyond for you. Nothing is too much. If you’re visiting Chester or a local The Carlton Tavern is the most friendly entertaining place to go. I would highly recommend this place if you can get there 10/10!!

I visited visited the Carlton for the 1st time last night. It was their open mike night and it was amazing.There was one singer guitarist there who was particularly amazing. He did a rendition of the Temptation's 'Papa was a Rolling Stone', one of my favourite all time songs. I cant remember ever having heard it being done so well. He had the most amazing diverse voice, he seemed to be able to do anything with it, from the highest register, to the lowest bass. Least to say I'll be back. I should add that I met some very nice, friendly people

Had a fantastic roast dinner delivered, large portions,real home cooked food,delivered piping hot by nicest driver. Spoke to lovely landlady to order who went above and beyond. I ordered extra roast potatoes and Cauliflower cheese,even these where massive portions all cooked so nicely. And the cheesecake we had was to die for,homemade lotus with strawberries on side. Again bug portion.

Had a delievery yesterday the first time. Certainly wont be the last. Real home cooked food,big portions,friendly staff. The food was piping food and cooked so nice. I had the roast chicken with extra roast potatoes and Cauliflower cheese. They tasted so nice and also big portion I had the cheesecake,which is homemade,so very tasty. Highly recommend.

This is a great venue. Live music, done socially distanced. Gordon and Debbie are amazing. The regulars are really welcoming.

Nice little pub, even the regulars are nice. They have live music at the weekends well worth the visit, if you get a chance.

Quiet little place with friendly staff. We only went along to see the live band playing otherwise we would not have visited. Loss of a star purely on the basis that if youre not a local you will spend the evening being that wierd quite couple at the back of the bar and the toilets need a bit of an update. Other wise we thoroughly enjoyed our evening with our reasonably priced beverages.

Decent boozer, beer was pretty good

My first visit for open mic night in the games room. I spotted football on the screen in the lounge and a darts match I think. All in all it seems like a good community pub which is hard to find these days. Nice staff. Toilets need some work.

There's always a warm welcome at Carlton Tavern whether you are a regular or you just pop in occasionally.

Recently moving back into the area after about 15yrs away, i was curious to re-visit some of my old haunts, I have to say the carlton ticks all the boxes for me, i felt welcome as soon as i walked through the door, the landord and partner have certainly made this friendly local pub stand out from the rest! The local clientele are also just as friendly and welcoming any day of the week, Tuesday's are especially good as an "Open mic" night where guest musicians can play the live stage performing their chosen type of music, well worth checking out! Ten out of ten! (And the pool table is pretty good too!)

This place has to be the friendliest pub in Chester, there is something on to keep you entertained every night of the week from quiz nights to live music from local bands including the amazing Blue Murder ! Debbie and Gordon make everyone feel extremely welcome ,as do all the locals and the selection of ales is first class. Looking forward to our next visit !

I play darts in the local league in chester and have been here a couple of times over the last few years with my team and friends and find the pub such a pleasant place to come to fabulous staff and great priced beer

If you can venture away from the city centre make a trip to a proper pub. Beautiful architecture, looks like a traditional London pub. Friendly welcome and great beers from Hyde's brewery. I've never been when music is on but I have been told its good. I have friends in Prestatyn, Cornwall and Scotland so when they come for their annual day out to Chester when I play pub tour guide/historian we always come here. As an ex publican I can personally recommend the Carlton tavern and wish the new management all the best. Its not easy running a pub but this is a fine example how to do it properly.. See you all soon!!!!

Not long moved to Handbridge and this is one of the most friendly pubs I've ever been in. So welcoming and lots going on with really friendly owners, staff and locals

Good pub which has something on most nights. They only provide snacks which is a pity but you'll have a good night out.

A proper pub with a genuinely warm welcome from Debbie and Gordon. Regular music nights and an annual beer festival. Good range of ales. All you could ask for in a pub. :)

Always some music on with good atmosphere and smiley staff. And it only round the corner.

Excellent live band nights, we thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Murder Duo and the landlord /landlady are very friendly along with the locals.
