The Carclaze in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Decent quality food with a good childrens menu, nice friendly staff. Can get busy as used by premier inn guests from next door so best to book. We ate here for two evening meals and three breakfasts. Breakfast buffet style, couldn't fault it. Empty plates at dinner which for a family of four (2 adults, 10yr and 14yr old) does not happen often and speaks for itself. Would recommend.

Probably the worst food we have ever had in a long time, the mash potato was disgusting and when we complained the waitress asked us if we wanted some more, the steak and ale pie was bland the salad consisted of lettuce and some cucumber not much else, not impressed to be honest

Good pub grub, staff switched on and accommodating, menu and choice of beers very pleasing. Food was hot and beers was cold, Good value for money

Staff are friendly, and the premises are clean and well presented. I had the Haddock and chips, and the portion size is very generous. Food serving may take a while as they get very busy.

Booked for Sunday lunch, as we drove in we were greeted with an ‘Under New Management’ sign which you hope will be a good thing. Then you get to the door and they are advertising for staff which you know is never a good thing with regards to service. Waited to be seated for almost ten minutes, but to give them their due two people who were clearly rushed of their feet apologised and said they would be with us shortly. We were eventually seated and we waited a few minutes for someone to come over I decided to order drinks and food all at once as a large party had just been seated next to us so didn’t want to be behind them. It took 25 minutes for us to receive our drinks and just shy of an hour for our roasts, no starters ordered. The beef was two extremely dry, pre sliced pieces of meat, the side of cauliflower cheese was indescribable and,like a bowl of mush. To be fair we did eat as much as possible, purely coz there wasn’t gonna be tea at home but seriously disappointed and it’ll be sometime never when we return. Good luck with the recruitment because it’s needed, closely followed by a bit of tlc with the food presentation. My advice would be to avoid unless you have plenty of time to sit and wait for mediocrity.

Great pub. Breakfast is definitely worth it all you can eat for £10 and kids eat free. They are sometimes short staffed so their can be a wait but the staff are lovely

Travelled to Mevagissey from Devon to spend a few days with family whilst they were on holiday and we came across this lovely pub on our travels. Chose the smothered chicken dish and it was very delicious, just the right amount of sauce and toppings on it to make it that extra bit tasty. The staff were very friendly and customer service was 💯 %. Would definitely recommend this place as a nice family friendly restaurant to go to 😊

Despite booking a table In advance as we were residents of the attached hotel, we were told there would be at least an hours wait for food. This was blamed on the booking system which had obviously over loaded the business which was unable to cope with the mothers day customer numbers. The whole place look a total mess.

Friendly clean and the staff were polite and professional, food was well cooked and presented, prices were comparable with other restaurants the same

We popped in here without reservations out of season. Service was excellent and very friendly. Food prices are fair and they offered a two for one deal on main meals Monday to Friday. There is a good choice on the menu and the food was very nice no issues. Local Cornish beers are on tap as well as other brands. Desert menus very good and gain fair prices.

Visited today 06/03/24, food was good and Kirsty our server was excellent. Really enjoyed our meal, all other staff were very friendly and helpful.

I've been here twice with my non verbal brother. They have been accommodating every time by putting us somewhere quiet and ensuring the food comes out at the same time

Came here with my friends just bc efor departing for the Southern Hemisphere at the beginning of October. It's a nice looking pub but unfortunately neither the food or service matched the environment. £60 for three mains and two desserts.

Food average, sent two meals back because of them being cold. Service staff were amazing, the girls to servedcthe food to the tables were so helpful. Our young lady Keeley was exceptional and on her A game. Would we go back, yes because there isn't anywhere else close. Access to the pub isn't the best as the paving has been badly laid and thete are several trip hazards. Not acceptable Whitbred.

Food was average at best. Two of the meals were cold when served. Puddings were good to be fair. The manager on arrival wasn't exactly pleased to see us and didn't seem to help his staff even though they were a member down. Went to say goodbye and he blanked me totally. Rude man. On a good note the girls who served at the tables were exceptional to be honest. Nothing was too much trouble and made us feel welcome and valued as a customer. A special mention to Keeley who was our main server. Extremely pleasant and extremely good at her job. Thank you Keeley, you could perhaps teach your restaurant manager a thing or two on how to treat customers

Food wasn't cooked properly, Couple on next table didn't eat their fish as cold a d nearly raw. Staff were very nice but no compensation for bad meals.

Found food really tasty...service a bit slow not there fault under staffed...good time had by all.

Quiet Monday. Still took over 2 hours to have mains and a pudding. Got orders wrong, tried to blame us. Has really gone downhill since the pandemic

Had to delete an old good review to write this sadly. We went to the Carclaze for breakfast today and we really really wish we hadn't. We walked in and waited for our table. Was asked to pre-pay which was fine (we thought) but there was no mention that half the food was missing!!! The manager served us and asked if we had a loyalty card which my partner produced on her phone. He seemed irritated and said he didn't have the equipment to scan it from a phone to which the young female bartender kindly told him how to do it manually. He then moaned that he was too busy to type the number in so we just told him not to worry about it as he seemed extremely stressed out! So we pay and go to find a table only to find they were all dirty so we began to clear one ourselves, the young bartender from before came over, smiled, apologised and took over for us, honestly she should be running the place as she was very kind and not at all fazed by the absolute chaos going on around her. I then went to get the drinks and found the milk and apple juice had run out which is fine, things run out so I went to the bar and informed the manager who once again sighed, looked annoyed that I'd dare bother him, pointed out they were extremely busy and he'd sort it when he could!!! To be fair he did actually then sort this out pretty quickly. We then went to get food and OMG there was nothing there hardly!!! I sorted my Dad and his friend out with there half a breakfast which was missing several items that weren't available (the chef told me not to bother waiting for them as they wouldn't be coming out anytime soon!!!) then I went back for mine. My partner got hers but took the last egg so I jumped out of the queue and joined the back hoping they'd restock. At this time another customer who was ahead of me in the queue complained about the lack of food and pointed out that getting us to prepay felt like a trap as we couldn't just walk out when we realised there was so much missing. The manager seemed annoyed with this customer, bordering on aggressive. I wanted to make my own complaint to him at this point but felt too intimidated to do it after the way he spoke to the other gentleman. I got to the front of the queue again and they had put out the eggs but the other items were still missing. There was a young man stood at the end of the table patiently waiting for scrambled eggs to come out (he waited a long time, I hope he got them in the end) and he told me the manager had let in a group of 14 people who hadn't booked which was what had caused all the hassle. Anytime we have tried to go without booking first we have been turned away (and rightly so) so it seems the manager bought all this stress on himself by allowing them in!!! So I gave up and took what I could and went and ate my half a breakfast. At this point I hear a commotion at the bar and see the gentleman from earlier asking for his money back as they hadn't got what they paid for. Once again this seemed to get the mangers back up and he started to raise his voice to the gentleman and his family (which included children), the man became a little frustrated with the way the manager was speaking to him and at this point the manager rather than trying to resolve the customers legitimate complaint told him to leave the building and threatened to call the police!!!!! If this is the way he talks to customers I'd absolutely hate to think how he talks to the staff, maybe you need to talk to some of them quietly as this guy has a screw loose!!! Again I wanted to complain but my girlfriend and Dad were afraid it would cause a scene because of how this manager was reacting to criticism.

Advertise all you can eat food , and can't deliver on this promise, place not even full and 30 mins wait for items that should be on a buffet , ask you to prepay , once you realise there is no food and ask for a refund , the manager threatens to call the police as he can't deal with complaints Never in my life, has a manager been so rude and obnoxious. Serious issues here , avoid at all costs

We went for a valentines meal and it really was lovely. We had the 3 course set menu, were greeted with a warm smile by the manager who served us also. We stayed next door and it was very busy, but service wasn’t affected and we really had a great evening. Would highly recommend.

Went for a valentines/new job celebration meal with my boyfriend. Welcomed with a warm atmosphere, our waitress Sammy was extremely happy, polite and helpful 😊 Even suggesting a little break between the main and dessert (which I really appreciated and needed haha) The steak and mixed grill were both really delicious and the desserts were good too. Overall a lovely evening, thank you Carclaze team!

Called in here for a drink the evening we stayed in the Premier Inn next door. Great choice of real ales for other half but the cider selection on tap was rubbish (personal choice). Decided to have breakfast here the next morning. Friendly, efficient staff. Paid immediately - £9.99 per head (unlimited). Excellent choice of both hot and cold food. Replenished regularly and very fresh. Will definitely eat here again when staying next door.

Great food at reasonable prices. Recommend the trio of mini pies with mash, peas and gravy. Also had a caramel ice cream sundae and a pot of tea. All for about £23.

The reviews of Niles were bad so came here, a mistake, place needs a revamp, busy so put in bar area, it’s cold, fish pie was ok, chicken pie ok but presentation was poor chips and peas luke warm, burger without the bun was just that no flair at all. Overall expensive at £50 for 3. Filled in form for rewards card but told couldn’t add points as didn’t ask for a receipt

We stayed at the premier inn next door. We had a meal and breakfast in the carclaze. All the staff were wonderful would recommend a visit if you are in ST Austell.

Food cold, slow service even though the place wasn't busy. Just spent ages sat there waiting while staff stood around talking at the bar. Had to ask 3 times just for sauce. No Sunday roast like advertised. We use to love the carclaze now it's horrendous.

After a trip to Eden we came here for dinner. We were not disappointed service cleanliness and food all excellent. We enjoyed our cocktails. Brilliant well done to all staff.

I’m a local, and will never eat at this pub again. My meal was awful. We arrived to a vertically empty pub. We waited 45 minutes for our meal. I ordered a rump steak and salad. My meal came out, with chips and onion rings. I sent it back. Not even 3 minutes later the waitress brought my meal to me. The salad was shocking. Literally thrown on the plate. My steak was also cold. We tried to order a cocktail, to be told someone will come to our table. A waitress appeared from a distance, saying are the one ordering the drinks. My husband said yes. She walked off and brought to us the same drinks from our previous order. I said I don’t want wine. Told her the cocktail I wanted. She looked at me with an annoyed expression, and walked off. Another waitress handed me my cocktail, sarcastically saying it was made with love. Pineapple overlord. It was disgusting!!!

Having visited the Eden project, we weren’t too keen on cooking so looked for somewhere near by and affordable, and stumbled upon the carclaze. The reviews really shocked me I only read them in the car back but we gave it a chance. I’m glad we did. The decor needs improving and the chairs aren’t great…but the food and service were 5 star. We were seated promptly by a lovely blonde lady, who wasn’t wearing black so I’m assuming was a manager, and seen to within minutes. The waitress that served us was a young girl with an infectious smile. We had the mixed grill, the scampi and the children had spag Bol and pizza. A great variation for a last minute meal out. We will be back when we visit next.

Walk in for a family meal stood waiting by the door with other people as well. 1 staff member more interested in to young men at the serving station who where just stood drinking. When we got our descusting table if it was not the birthday I who have walk out, Table looks like it come from outside in the rain. The chair come from a junk yard so dirty never been cleaned Knife on the table had Jam on drying that it stuck to the napkin. Food was ok and most of the staff very attentive but come on guys your company needs to look at itself big time as this place is a mess and a premier inn next door I’m surprised they don’t complain I’ve scored one cause I had to.

Been going to Carclaze for years and never had any problems in fact several years ago excellent service with a waitress called Kathy and last month can’t in booked in restaurant good service friendly and manager could not been more helpful This time we were in bar ordered food waited 30 mins for starters and had to go up and tell the person who took order got them but mine was cold Then waited and waited no main meal yet man who came in long after got his had to mention again and the same person who took order said he would find out but no apology about time etc Such poor customer service and never experienced such a long wait anywhere this long so has put me off going now

Food is generally of a high standard but service is consistently of a lower standard despite several staff/management changes over the years. Always seems staffed well but very disorganised. Service can be very slow at times and can become self service for drinks as can take an eternity. The last time we went 11 months ago, we had been there 2 and a half hours without having a desert and ended up leaving due.to the wait After not visiting in a while we thought we would give it a go today. We had a table booked for 12 and accidentally arrived 20 mins early. We were told we wouldn't be able to get any drinks or place any orders until "dead on 12". No problem, we went away and came back just before 12. Upon coming back we were quizzed about how much we wanted to eat before being shown to the table as there was a larger table of 7 coming in after and we would have to be gone by 1. It was then 12 minutes later before someone came back, our drinks order and food order was taken. Food order was out 10 minutes later. I had to round up my own salt and pepper and call the waitress back for sauces. The food was lovely, the only problem was that whilst no-one came to check on whether everything was OK with the meal, 3 different staff came peering over to see whether we had finished yet. At 25 to 1, 2 members of staff started to reorganise the tables right next to us while we were still eating, clearly hinting they wanted us out. As soon as we finished our mains the waitress was immediately over and I was asked to follow her up to pay. We were sat in the car at 18 minutes to 1. We booked this table and couldn't have felt any more unwelcome. It wasn't as if we turned up and they squeezed us in. The food however was of a great standard and good value due to the promotional offer we had. But will be avoiding again in the future in favour of Penhale Round at Fraddon.

7.30pm we decide to have food here after taking the kids to eden. Before taking the kids out the car, i head into the carclaze to check availability. The waitress said yes we could have a table in the bar area, as long as we were willing to wait 45 minutes for food, and that it would be waiting for us when i got my friends and their kids from the car. This was not the case. The waitress had spoken to the manager in that short moment of time and was told no walk-ins...so we were then told we could drink but not order any food. You would think the manager would have said "look, accept these customers as you have already said they could order food, but dont accept any more", OR advise us to book the 8.30pm online slot they had available on their website (we found this out after we left, that we could have booked formally AND would have still taken 45 minutes for food). But no, we had to then take the kids back to the car, and go elsewhere, which happened to be holmbush pub, which we highly recommend due to friendly/helpful staff and excellent food.

Food is freezing cold and didn't even bring sauces out until I gave eaten my meal. Waitress was extremely rude and made us order in a very fast and unorganised way so that food was missing of the table when it came out. so much so that only got my meal after they cleared the rest of the empty plates. Went today for Christmas lunch with a friend. Table was booked for 1pm. Didn't get our starter until 1.40pm. After another 40 minute wait, our Christmas Dinner arrived - it had obviously been under some sort of lamp for a while. The carrots were dry...

We didn't book and was told to seat in the bar area as all the other tables was reserved by the time we finished 90% of theses tables still wasn't being used which seemed very strange to start with . Looked like very short of staff and the once that was there should have looked smarter and more polite. When order was told can't order off that menu it's off the festive menu. So why give us all these menu in the frist place ? Was told we're to get napkins and cutlery from , no napkins there cutlery short or empty so all need filling. Service to the table was poor then had to ask for the sauces to go with the meal not offered same happened to the table next to us , so would of thought it would be easier and nice to offer . Had 3 roast dinners and extra sides to go with the dinners . Why on your menu it's called world famous roast potatoes Yorkshire pudding and gravey as they were some of the worst iv ever had . Pigs in blanks were burnt and the extra was only 3 !!! And again burnt on one side . Veg was OK but anything roasted was over done . The extra side of calflower cheese was like soup and burnt on top . For what we payed for the meal it definitely wasn't value for money of worth what we paid for it definitely won't be going back . We have used it a few times and it's gone back wards in hospitality sorry to say

I live locally and decided to have a meal in the week. Staff were fab, very kid friendly and really went above and beyond for my daughter. She wanted the festive turkey dinner, but knowing her she wouldn't eat a lot of it because she's very fussy with her veg. The waitress went out of her way to create a meal that my daughter would like, removing the veg and adding some other bits. Daughter ate the lot and now loves the place. Food is very good value, so we decided to go for breakfast this morning. Food was fab, every single thing on my plate I enjoyed. Drinks are good with PG tips tea, and juices. Kids eat free with a paying adult. Total value for money. Staff here do an amazing job, especially with the constant battle of recruiting and keeping hospitality staff at the moment. Well done!! It's not easy!

Food was good service was really bad waited 50 minutes for starters & we had to go the bar to ask were they were manger is out of his depth I will not be going back there there was not enough staff & hadv to wait at the bar for 10 minutes to get a pint of beer

Great place for Eden Project Great breakfasts and evening meals

Went for a party which was pre booked. We had a few toddlers and a very pregnant lady which they knew about in advance. The tables weren’t set for us and we had to rearrange the tables ourselves to make the table which we had booked. We went for breakfast and the food was Luke warm, there were I think 3 clean cups to make our coffees in for the whole group, we had to ask for bread to make our own toast. We stacked and cleared our own plates. When asking where the toilets were, was told by a member of staff “I believe they are over there”. The seats were threadbare, we had to find our own high chairs the other end of the building and carry them over ourselves as there were no staff to be found to ask. We had a really bad experience at the sister pub the callywith in Bodmin and now somehow even worse experience here at the Carclaze. We won’t be going back to either.

We called into this pub for a drink on Friday evening we had a great time the staff were very friendly.

Diabolical. Stayed adjacent to Carclaze. After travelling to Cornwall, my good lady and I booked for a meal on our first night of 6. Entered but no one at "wait here to be seated". Went to the bar & ordered drinks We were then escorted to a table. Sat and waited for our drinks order. Waitress arrived to take our food order which we placed. I asked for our drinks. However, I was told that the food & drinks will be served together. I stated that I prefer to have a pre dinner drink of beer followed by wine with my meal. "Can't do that" was the response. I walked away to the bar and asked/ received our initial drinks order. OK. Our meals arrived cold to the point of inedible. We paid and retired for the evening. As we also prebooked breakfast, we attended despite concerns. The breakfast experience mirrored the previous night. No eggs, the remaining food was curled, dried, and cold. Needless to say, this was the last visit (of our week long stay) to Carclaze. However, we visited, enjoyed, and would absolutely recommend future visitors to the area to do as we did. 250 yards across the road is a FANTASTIC bakery that serves brilliant food along with exceptional hospitality. Best ever.

Booked and arrived as a family group of 12, taken to our tables to find we were not all seated together, one table was around the corner behind a wall. This wasn't acceptable for a family meal and waitress staff didn't seem to care. Only after 2 family members left did the manager arrive, too little too late. Also agree with other reviews that it is looking run down and was also cold. Will not return.

As a regular at Premier Inn, I can say the Carclaze restaurant can be variable, with occasional staff shortages impacting service and often food choices not available.

Went In the afternoon for a meal was shouted at from the bar , grab your menus you sit over there and order at the bar ,lovely meet and greet . You have to get your own cutlery and no condiments on the table . Food was warm , and the pub was freezing as there was no heating , and to Finnish off couldn’t put salt on my meal cause it was damp from the cold . Think I would of been warmer eating outside very disappointed with everything but about this place and they seem to be only interested in holiday makers this is the second time I’ve tried here and no change so save your money you’ll be treated a dame site better in Wetherspoons than here

We arrived at the Premiere Inn to early to book in so decided to go over to the Carclaze Inn for lunch, we were greeted by a man dressed in a scruffy t shirt and jeans playing on the fruit machine and asked if we had booked, as we were a walk in we were shown to a rather scruffy corner with uneven tables pushed together and stained threadbare seats, as there was plenty of empty tables in a nicer part of the restaurant and it was far from busy my son in law asked if we could be moved, he was told that those tables were for people who had booked, after he insisted we were eventually moved to a better table although the seats were still quite stained. The food was passable, although it took a while to arrive and we cleared the table ourselves between courses as the empty plates were there for longer than acceptable. We have stayed in premier inns in the past and eaten in the attached restaurants in the past and have never experienced such bad service or poor presentation of the facilities. Needless to say we won't be hurrying back

It wasn't a particularly friendly welcome when we arrived and we hadn't booked so we're told to find a table in the bar if we could. All the empty tables had reserved signs on them but after eventually finding a member of staff we were told they weren't reserved, not sure why they were left on the tables? After ordering scampi and beef pie they turned up but neither were hot so they got sent back, they came back a bit hotter but still not great and the gravy was just about warm. The chips were really poor and the scampi was tiny and not great, peas were nuked to death and the portion sizes were both very small. Overall a really poor experience and we had to cover our wine glasses as there were fruit flies flying about that kept swimming in our vino, safe to say we won't be returning.

I had a fish pie which was ok and my wife had tomato soup and a "Thai vegetable green curry" with chicken. The unfortunate Thai green curry recipe had been mixed up with something so bland it was indescribable. It was not in the slightest bit spicy or had any taste of a Thai curry, it did have some green veg. in it. It was so plastic tasting plus it even had some plastic in it to go with the taste! These "restaurants" are best avoided if you like tasty food. Pity the poor people who have to work there 😞

Been many times, always find the var service incredibly slow even when the place is quiet, food is not great for the prices, i once ordered beef stew & dumplings & the food arrived whilst i went to use the toilet, no dumplings - had to ask the server where they are only to be informed they had run out ...she started walking away & i had to raise my voice to see if she could give me something else instead to compensate! Also very untidy outside - the amount of cigarette buys & rubbish in the hedgerows by the main entrance is disgusting & it has been like that for as long as i can remember.

We were staying at the Premier Inn next door so we only ate here for convenience but wish we hadn’t. We hadn’t booked but walked in at about 5pm and wasn’t very busy. We stood for a few minutes waiting for a member of staff. Right in front of us was a barman making drinks who ignored us. There was another man in jeans and dirty t-shirt moving chairs who kept looking us but didn’t speak so I assumed he didn’t work there. To my surprise this scruffy man eventually came up to us and asked if we had booked a table. When we said no he pointed in a general direction and said ‘you can sit anywhere over there in the bar area and order at the bar’. All but one table had ‘reserved’ on them. This table was next to a function room which was hosting a young teens birthday party. The noise was horrendous but as it was the only spare table we had no choice. The food choice looked ok so we ordered tomato soup starters, which were ok. I had a cheese & onion pie with chips and a pot of gravy. The pie was dry and half empty. The gravy was vile so had ketchup instead. My husband had a bbq chicken breast with bacon and cheese on top. This was also quite dry, hardly any bbq sauce on it, the cheese was hard to find and a tiny piece of bacon on top. There was one young girl with dark hair who served the food who was the only positive in this place. She worked hard and with a smile. That scruffy man appeared to be the manager, what a bad example and shocking representative for the pub. Would not recommend this place at all! I would give it a 0 stars if I could.

Staff standing around talking about non work related stuff. 1 lady behind the bar doing everything and clearly new to the job, a man occasionally doing drinks for the tables, had no welcome or engagement from staff, stood for about 10 minutes with friends at the bar without any communication from staff, we all ended up walking out. Wasnt even busy. Poor customer service at its finest

One member staff running around doing it all .as we have noticed this lady before she always has a smile even when busy x sadly we hear she is leaving. But on a good note we wont be going back either as the food was not nice on this our last visit.

Will not be going back waited for a hour & half for dinner for food that I couldn't eat £65 down the drain

Get starter within 20 minutes but then waited nearly two hours for main course but then was passed being hungry not a good dining experience wot being going back

The food wasn't really good (burgers and nachos). It's all a bit loveless. We were disappointed.

The food was a reasonable price, took a little longer than I hoped to get it.

Just tried to get food, wouldn't serve us as we hadn't booked despite being dead in there!
