The Captain's Wife in The Vale of Glamorgan

Very poor service, struggled to get our table on arrival along with very poor table service from quite an abrupt young man. I ordered the mushrooms as a starter and was served some very dry toast with a few mushrooms and barely any sauce. When I asked if I could have some more sauce I was told no as it was an exact portion! The food was generally poor!

As a company we took our residents out for the day, we decided to park in their car park and ended up getting a parking tickets for 2 of our residents cars. We attempted to appeal this ourselves due to our residents having diabetes and needing to eat something so we had to park somewhere for this to happen. We were unsuccessful with the appeal. However we took it to the Captains Wife and spoke to a Johanna and Gabby who were extremely lovely and managed to sort this out for us. We are extremely grateful. Thank you girls 🤗

Really lovely location and the food was delicious. The restaurant was cosy and welcoming. Our server Johanna was very attentive and made sure the experience was wonderful. Will definitely be returning!

Let's start with the positive plus - food was excellent. Good quality and amazing portions. The desserts were easily shareable and the chocolate brownie very rick. What absolute spoilt our family night out was the service or lack of. We were shown to our table and given menus. Then we were ignored for around 10 minutes. Eventually we went to the bar to order our food and drinks. Food was great when delivered. We finished the main course and waited around 15 minutes for someone to atleast clear our table. In the end we had to go to the bar and ask and order our dessert . The table was partially cleared with sauces and crockery left as the desserts arrived. We then had to go to the bar to pay our bill. Other customers arriving after ordered food and drink at their tables and where served before us. Never sit on table 9 - you may be ignored!

Hi i had a problem with my parking from a different date so i phoned up and spoke to Lloyd who was fantastic with his honesty he told me to come down and he would sort it out for me i am still waiting to have confirmation via Email but he was very busy and was of to run another place in i think Cornwall at the end of his shift ,while i was there i had the belly pork unbelieve how nice it was

I've been to the Captain's wife numerous times, and enjoyed many visit to Sully Island. However, I will be returning ever again as this has been spoilt by the intimidation of their parking company who claims I parked in breach of contract. Whenever i've visited their establishment and parked in the compound i've keyed in on their computer, when i've parked on the frontage I've always assumed this was free. On return, there is signage a meter off the ground which is visibly blocked by parked cars. Never again will I visit this spot, dirty parking companies, fed up of them. Never once found over capacity parking there, so why they need to capitalise on this is beyond me. You've just lost a long term customer for the 6 months of stress and forthcoming court case. Suggest other visitors beware.

We came in for a spot of late lunch after our walk around Barry. We were seated by the cosy fire, the food was outstanding and absolutely perfect service from Leanne our server.

So disappointed in the captain’s wife came for Christmas as we had came the year before and it was fantastic. Food came out freezing cold had to ask the waitress was it possible to go back and reheat it? Food came out again cold soggy vegetables not enough gravy waitress brought out more gravy which went cold while waiting for the food were heated for the second time Food came out a third time lukewarm.We were so hungry by then that we couldn’t even be bothered to ask for it to be reheated huge waiting between courses forgot most of my dish for my starter then added on a £32 surcharge. We always tip the waiter or waitress by £32 surcharge for a meal which you spent £317 on which came out cold on three occasions very very disappointed. We understand it’s busy it’s Christmas but it’s not too much to ask for your food to be warm, will never book for Christmas again.

Great location and cosy inside but sadly the food is very below standard. The vegetables and gravy were cold (we had to ask for it to be heated up) and the whole meal tasteless. Veg tasted like it had been cooked early in the morning and sat out all day. Such a disappointment especially given the price.

Beautiful pub restaurant. We went on Christmas Eve and it was so Christmassy and cosy. The food was so tasty and there were lots of good options. The staff were amazing and dealt with dietary restrictions and a chaotic 2yr old really well. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer time on Christmas Eve!

Try saying the heading fast and it’ll make you smile, almost as much as we smiled when the 3 meat roast that we ordered came to the table, big slice of Turkey, beef and perfectly cooked pork with a twirl of crunchy crackling all on top of a bed of perfectly cooked seasonal vegetable topped with a big helping of gravy on the side, 3 of us ordered it and we all enjoyed it, unfortunately, the afternoon was slightly ruined as my husband was crying and mourning over his steak and ale pie, the beef was tough and chewey the gravy inside the pie was watery, so with a solemn face had to watch the 3 of us scoff down our wonderful roast dinner, we’ll go back again for sure but we won’t be ordering the Steak and Ale pie.

Whilst the food was served on warm plates a rarity these days, I’m afraid the cut of beef used in the “steak pie” was largely inedible as they had used beef only fit for stews or casserole. When I brought this to the attention of the server and asked him to take it back to the chef , I heard nothing further . Clearly needs further training in customer relations.

We went here after it was recommended by a close friend. What a treat after our walk around Cosmeston Lake. Patio was busy as the sun was shining so we sat indoors for the lunch menu. Loved the atmosphere, the food was fresh with clean flavours, served hot, presented well. Special mention to Beetroot and Pumpkin seed Arancini. Great customer service, loved our meal!

Had roast turkey Sunday lunch. Food was served cold, parsnips were raw, had great difficulty trying to cut them. Roast potatoes were not fully cooked, Gravy was very overpowering and left a thick film of hardened fat on the plate. Possibly the worst roast dinner iv been served.

Lovely cosy atmosphere. Food selection was great, plenty to choose from. Our meals were amazing and our server Gabbie was great, nothing was too much. Will definitely be back

I'm a carer for a disabled young person. Thought I'd stop by to get us both a drink, but realised upon arrival that it wasn't open as it was 11.30am. For various reasons, driving around finding something else to do wasn't suitable, so we wondered around to the beach and stopped for a while there instead. Today I learned that this half hour outing cost me £100 because of the horrendous car parking system that your general manager choosing to defend smugly to other reviewers. I lost significantly more money than I made that day. I will never spend money at the Captain's Wife again.

We went to the Captain's Wife with family and friends to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday yesterday. The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating when our party of 34 people descended on them ranging in age from 2 to 85! A special thanks to Louise for looking after us so well. Btw - the food was really good too!

Sadly the place was understaffed (very friendly though) and food that they had run out of was substituted without asking or explaining. A disappointing experience from what looks like could be a fabulous place

Absolutely terrible service, had to wait 10 minutes for a drink at bar then went back to order food, had to wait 20 minutes at the bar again, only to be told that they don’t serve food outside.

Good Friday indeed! A lovely birthday lunch out for my Mum on a busy bank holiday weekend for most. Leanne was fabulous serving all 11 of us in the middle of a busy lunch period. Drinks all served quickly, food was hot all meals correct and didn’t take long considering how busy it was. Struggling with choosing a pudding? Had fabulous food, but the star of the show was most definitely Neil! What outstanding service and attention to detail. Beyond accommodating to any request made and very knowledgeable on food and drinks. Thank you, Neil, you're a credit and asset to the establishment.

Lovely Sunday dinner today. Ordered the pork belly and it came but with little meat so this was changed asap, very apologetic. My friend who was vegetarian was a little gutted when there was no veg gravy left for her dinner. Otherwise overall a lovely meal out and drinks the night before. Debs was very helpful at getting us a reservation and making sure the dog was happy too .

What an amazing place! Debs was a great host, dog whisperer, and friendly face combined. They couldn’t do anything more to make us comfortable including switching the heating on (it was not cold, my friend was 😂) and dog chair.. a great place with an amazing sunset overlooking the beach.. what more could you want for a chilled evening..

It was a busy fri evening! Our waitress leanne was brilliant and thoughtful. This was not my first time here and I have always found this pub cosy and welcoming. Food good and reasonably priced! Any issues sorted immediately and efficiently!

I visited the captains wife with family and friends to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday. I took banners, balloons and cake to the venue during the day - staff took care of these and decorated our seating area. Staff and management were extremely helpful and friendly. The “party area” looked fantastic! The food all arrived together which was impressive when catering for a large booking. The food was excellent- the pizzas and steaks went down a treat and the sea bass was delicious. Staff took care of the cake and gathered to join in singing happy birthday - It was a wonderful atmosphere! I was also impressed with the festive decorations throughout - it all contributed to a wonderful experience had by all. We all look forward to returning and highly recommend the captains wife to those looking for a family friendly, warm and inviting venue to celebrate special occasions.

What a wonderful Sunday Roast! Every element was perfect. Meat was tender and the lovely mixture of veg was perfectly cooked…..no soggy broccoli! All members of staff were pleasant and seemed to be happy in their jobs. The only thing I would say is far too many roasties…..by no means a complaint as they were delicious but I physically couldn’t finish them. We will definitely be back ASAP. This was our second visit this year, and we have to travel approximately 80 minutes from our home address to get here. We were greeted by Johanna on arrival and shown to our table near the window, with lovely views across the bay! I was such a cold day outside but nice and warm/cosy indoors with their open fire in full swing near the restaurant enterance. The Captain’s Wife gives you a warm, welcoming and homely feeling with its ‘oldy world’ decor! We were served with our drinks not long after and opted for their festive 2/3 course menu. I ordered the Roast Tomato & Pepper Soup starter, which came with 2 Crusty Bread and Butter - it was delicious My wife and daughter ordered the King Prawn & Smoked Salmon Cocktail. These were generous portions to say the least and, if anything, there was a bit to much lettuce but very tasty all the same. For our mains, we all ordered the Hand Carved Turkey Breast with seasonal vegetables, which again, was a really generous portion! The presentation of the dinner looked amazing! The food was cooked to perfection and we’ve never tasted Turkey like it! We all agreed it was very tasty and just melting in your mouth! The vegetables were Roast Potatoes, Carrots, Roasted Parsnips, Cabbage & Broccoli with a Yorkshire Pudding, and Stuffing wrapped in Bacon - with a pot of gravy on the side. We must admit, it’s the nicest, tastiest Turkey Dinner we’ve had for a long time, and I’d highly recommend anyone trying it. The generous portion size stopped us from having a dessert. All in all, we had a fantastic experience at The Captains Wife and, we highly recommend this place if you're looking for a traditional pub/restaurant in a tranquil setting and expect good service with exceptionally good quality food. I'd like to personally thank Johanna for her kindness and help in making our visit another wonderful experience and, no doubt, we'll see you all soon - thank you.

Always such a lovely atmosphere in the Captains Wife and the food is always top tier. Stunning location - important to note that the whole car park in this area belongs solely to them, so if you’re eating in a different establishment then you won’t be able to park here. We visited for my 70th birthday celebration.I ordered rib eye steak (medium rare).As I cut in to it,it was apparent it was rare and was impossible to cut.The small amount I was able to cut were inedible.I am a regular customer and usually the steaks are very good.Noone came to ask if the meals were OK but I did mention the disappointing steak when the plates were collected The other 5 meals were fine.Really disappointed that this issue was not rectified as it was obvious from the steak left on my plate that it was inedible.

SCAM!!! Went down to The Captains wife on a wintery Sunday for a short walk and maybe a pint after with my wife, Parked in the far corner near the sea wall and gateway to the beach in what appeared to be a disused and derelict area of the car park so that we didn’t block customers. Pub appeared closed at this time. No parking signs in that area and no pay and display signs seen. Had our walk but unfortunately had to leave early so no pint. A week and a half later we receive a parking fine for £100 from Euro Car Parks. Haven’t been here for some time and definitely won’t be back to eat/drink at this pub! COMPLETE MONEY GRABBING SCAM!!

Went for lunch with a friend. Not a great experience sadly. Started by being given oat milk I questioned if it was oat milk and was told no it was ordinary. ( it was oat ) although server did change it when asked. On leaving the restaurant it was noticed that my coat was damaged with a white substance. A member of staff took it to try to get the marks off but was unsuccessful. I also pointed out that this substance was in and on my handbag. My name and e nail were taken . 4 days later and I have not received any notifications from them. Also I noticed there was a piece of fish under our table that I had stepped in. I pointed tout to 2 members of staff explaining I was allergic to fish ( I'm anaphylaxis to fish) yet it was not moved and no one paid any attention to both my friend and I pointing this out. So sadly this turned into a stressful lunch out. Beware of putting your coat on the back of your chair near a wall!

We parked opposite this restaurant and didnt know the car park was part of the Captain's Wife. We thought it was just the side car park that belonged to the restaurant. We didn't enter our car registration number for this very reason. A week later, a parking fine arrived which we were very upset about. I then contacted the Captain's Wife & spoke to Debs who was extremely understanding and offered to contact the company for me, to remove the fine. Debs was so helpful with this matter and we are very grateful. We will be back soon as the food & service is always a pleasure. We have never had an awful meal here.

Had a lovely 2 course lunch here with some work friends. The waitress Leanne was very kind and attentive, food was delicious. Overall a lovely lunch time spot.

Got caught out by the carpark charges. Didn't see the sign upon entry to the carpark (doesn't really matter why but I've lived here all my life and there's never been charges before, poor weather and visibility due to rain showers maybe) Walked to the island and back at low tide. Intended to stay for lunch but with children things happen and we had to leave. Blam! Letter through door demanding £100. £60 if I pay early. Well that's £60 I won't be spending there next time or ever. Great way to alienate potential customers. I should've parked in the caravan park and gone to the Spinney instead. Would've had a much more positive experience. The carpark was literally empty. Very annoyed.

Took my family for Sunday dinner as I've heard good thing about the roasts at the Captains - well it certainly didn't disappoint! The food was all very lovely and filling, but, the highlight of the trip was definitely the service! being greeted at the door and shown to the table with a smile was a nice opener and then being looked after Louise made the day for us! She couldn't be more helpful with all of our needs - on the ball with everything while juggling a busy day! Worth the visit, will come again in the future!

Very disappointing, coffee hardly warm, could see that it had been left on bar for sometime. Not enough staff, I eventually went up and brought tray of coffee to our table. Food was also not very hot, then confusion over fact 2 people from our group had "set" menu. I went up to pay bill, wasn't sure if anyone would be ordering a pudding. I paid what the bill was at that time. Subsequently, one person decided on having a pudding. I explained to him he only had to pay for pudding as I had paid the bill in full. The person behind bar said as I had paid bill in full the other two puddings included in "set" menu would have to be re-charged!! We challenged this. Eventually it was agreed they would refund £8.99. Wouldn't visit again, very disappointing as we had family with us from USA.

Had a nice lunch today but it’s a shame that offers available weren’t fully explained. I had a voucher for a free bottle of Prosecco for my birthday but the bill turned out to be more expensive than planned as was not told we had to order from main menu to receive the offer. The service was great and the young lady who served us was extremely sorry for the misunderstanding and handled the situation very professionally…….i do think the promotion of this offer should be made much clearer. Although we had this hiccup with our order/payment, we will definitely return again. Lovely food and ambience.
