I visited this restaurant twice for dinner in 2 days, once with a large group of fellow conference delegates and a second time with my parents. The restaurant exceeded my expectations on both occasions, particularly on the first night, when with less than a week's notice (due to being let down by another establishment), they managed to serve a group of more than 20 (with no pre-orders) in a very quick and efficient manner, whilst waiting staff remained polite, efficient and professional throughout. There is still enough choice on the menu to have caused difficulty choosing on both evenings. I would be more than happy to visit again if in the area.

Centrally located to Doncaster, and a short cab drive to the Dome. We came here for pre event at the dome. The service was professionally, friendly with suitably attentive staff, helping us to enjoy our drinks and dinner, Good quality food and service. The food is fresh and well prepared and tasty. The art deco ambience we enjoyed. Would recommend and we hope to come again

We heard that the restaurant had been refurbished, so booked for my birthday & we were not disappointed. The Art Deco decor in the hotel & restaurant is fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit for afternoon tea. We really like the choice of savoury & classic options as 2 of us were not big sweet tooth’s. The food was of excellent standard, plenty of it & copious refills of tea/coffee. The staff were very pleasant & attentive. If you want a traditional afternoon tea with cloth napkins in beautiful surroundings then we can recommend this. We travelled all the way from York & will return. If it is your birthday too & 4 of you dine, you get the birthday person receives a free afternoon tea! We will be back to sample the Sunday lunch when next back in Doncaster, as it is worth the trip.

Popped in for afternoon tea with my hubby. We chose a classic and a savoury afternoon tea to share between us.. both were well presented with a good selection of everything. My husband had the pork pie from the savoury choice and said it was gorgeous. The service was impeccable..welcoming and friendly absolutely professional. Covid precautions were followed to the letter everything was spotless. Would highly recommend!

Booked afternoon tea for my Nana’s 80th Birthday for 3 of us and it was absolutely lovely!! The staff were so friendly and even brought out a lovely “happy birthday” treat for my Nana! The afternoon tea itself was amazing, so much choice and so much food which was brilliant quality, sandwiches and cakes alike! We were asked throughout if everything was okay and we were offered more tea and a takeaway boxes to take little cakes home! I would highly recommend the afternoon tea here, I will definitely be back! :)

We had “The Christmas Set” lunch at the Earl last Tuesday. The food was first class, I had prawn cocktail, Turkey with all the trimmings, followed by the cheese platter. All were exceptional. They even served mince pies with coffee to finish things off. The tables were decorated with crackers etc so it all felt very festive. The staff are amazing. Very friendly attentive and polite. This place is highly recommended, we will definitely be back.

Went to the restaurant at the Earl of Doncaster - the Cafe Bar Concerto - for Sunday lunch. Good value - 2 courses £16, three for £18. Booked last minute and made our usual request for a corner table if possible; they said they'd see what they could do, which is all we could ask. Easy parking - right outside on a Sunday, their car park at back of hotel during the week. Waitress acknowledged our booking, and gave us the choice of several tables, which was very helpful and appreciated. Both had a prawn cocktail with smoked salmon - very nice and delicately presented. I had roast beef, my wife the ale pie (the homemade pie of the week). Plates were (physically) a little on the small side - too small really for the portion size! A really decent side serving of horseradish sauce - not the grudging spoonful or two that some places offer! A very large separate bowl of cauliflower cheese to accompany the mash/roasts/mixed veg. My beef was slightly on the pink side - my fault, as I should have asked for it well done (I like mine as brown and textured as shoe leather!). Couldn't face dessert after the very full servings. A decent shiraz wine, and water offered to be brought to the table without us having to ask. Staff were very attentive. Table layout seems really good, with some seating in a slightly raised area (definitely worth asking for) and some with soft leather banquettes rather than chairs. They seem to do excellent midday meals for senior citizens (at just £10 or £12 for 2 or 3 courses) Downsides? given the excellent genuine art deco decor (check out their website for some pics!) the choice of music would have been far, far better as ragtime or big band - rather than a somewhat atrocious Jungle Book or raucous Tom Jones or other modern songs. There was a single big band item that played while we were there and it so beautifully fitted in to the surroundings! And the door from the dining room to the kitchen area is desperately in need of some oil - it squeaked terribly, and the closure each time took around 7 seconds of s l o w s q u e a k...! Oh, and management don't bother responding to or acknowledging reviews on Tripadvisor. That is really bad and shows total disrespect for your paying customers. Shame on you!

A group of 6 of us recently attended The Earl of Doncaster cafe bar for our team Christmas lunch. I had been on their website and downloaded the available menu's and asked my colleagues for their choices. I stated when I phoned up to book the table we would like to order 4 classic afternoon teas and 2 orders from the standard lunch menu. No problem. 2 days before we were due to attend I phoned to double-check our booking and was told 'Yes, table for 6 for festive fayre'. I said 'no that's incorrect it's 4 classic afternoon teas and 2 regular menu choices'. The lady on the phone said she will update that for us. When we got to the Earl we were given menu's for the Festive afternoon tea. I said straightaway that we had booked the classic afternoon tea (the Festive one being £4 extra per person). The young girl who attended our table at that point was lovely and apologetic and said she would swap the menu's for us. When she came back she said sorry but the classic afternoon tea is not available and they were only doing the Festive afternoon tea. I mentioned that I had specified Classic afternoon tea when I booked and again when I followed up the booking and nothing was said to me about it not being available. Again she was apologetic and said she will ask the kitchen if they can do the Classic for us. Apparently the kitchen did not have the ingredients in for Classic afternoon tea (sandwiches and cakes) but only had ingredients for Festive afternoon tea (sandwiches and cakes plus £4 extra). We were a bit taken aback at their lack of flexibility and we said we would be happy to eat the Festive afternoon tea if the gave it us for the same price as the Classic, as the error was theirs in not pointing out Classic afternoon tea was not available. We thought this was a reasonable request, and can I point out we are all professionals on a team Xmas lunch with 3 of us being managers and not 'chancers' as it seems to us we were being treated. The young girl said it should be ok and she will adjust the price. So with that sorted, or so we thought, a different lady then came to take a drinks order and a different lady yet took the lunch order for the 2 who weren't having the afternoon tea. We were feeling quite uncomfortable at this point as we just wanted to come out for a nice meal yet we had been faced with an awkward mix up. Next a lady came over to the table who I can only presume was a manager and she proceeded to loudly announce our situation to the whole restaurant. We thought the mix up had been sorted however she came over to tell us we can't have them at the reduced price because of their profit margins, the girl who said we could didn't have the authority to say we did, and that throughout the whole of December they only do the Festive afternoon tea. I told her I had stipulated Classic on booking, and again on confirming. And the website we downloaded the menu's from said nothing about a classic not being available in December. According to the manager - if that is who she was, the website problem was a separate company so not her responsibility and she asked if I knew who I spoke to. Of course I didn't get the name of who I booked our meal with, well you don't do you. So we were all being spoken to very loudly and may I say rudely by this lady who had come over to basically tell us we won't be getting the £4 taken off our meals and that it wasn't her fault. She would however give us 10% off the bill. We were so uncomfortable. I just wanted her to stop talking and embarrassing us. It felt like we were being told off and her attitude towards us was appalling. We agreed to whatever she said just so we could go back to trying to have a nice lunch. (While this was going on kitchen staff brought out one of the regular lunch choices but not the other and when questioned stated they didn't receive 2 orders-leaving one of our party without food for 10 minutes while we all had ours). We didn't eat all of our cakes in the end and asked for a doggy bag. Next we were presented with a plastic box to put the food in OURSELVES.....and a pen and a form to sign! I have never in my life been asked to sign a waiver when taking food out of a restaurant! We were shocked! Laughing, gob smacked, shocked! We signed. We left. We won't be back.

We have now been three times to The Earl, for their Afternoon Tea and now for Sunday lunch. It's such a great setting for dining and we like the ambience. We all had starters, which were excellent and then had various roasts, which were also very good and substantial (good Yorkshire portions). Unfortunately, we did not have room to try the desserts, but all had coffee. One of the great things about the restaurant are the wonderful staff, who we find so friendly and obliging (nothing is too much trouble for them). We look forward to returning.

My husband and I have not been here for sometime but decided to take our grown up children for Sunday Lunch. The restaurant itself has a warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed a drink in the bar and were then taken to our table. The Sunday Lunch Menu had a wide choice of starter, main and dessert and we all chose our favourites. The service was excellent and the staff were very professional, helpful and courteous. We did not have to wait for our starters which were enjoyable. Our table was cleared and we were served our main course, the meats were perfectly cooked and the selection of vegetables was a pleasant change from peas and carrots !! The food was hot and well presented and we all cleared out plates. My husband was the only one able to eat a dessert which was chocolate brownie and ice cream, he only manged half of it and the other half came home with us !!! my daughter and i went to see the " wild tonics" a fabulous 1920's style trio, that suited the art deco room perfectly, it was made for them. The entertainment was second to none, we intended on taking videos of them to show other friends who didn't go. we paid £30 to get in which also included a three course meal. as i don't drink my soda water and lime was priced very well at 80p but my daughter ordered a glass of rose, and was advised to buy a bottle as it worked out cheaper, still £17.50 though! ouch. we were seated in good time, orders taken and first courses came out in dribs and drabs, in fact rather haphazard style which took ages, prawn cocktail was shocking, smallest dozen prawns i have ever seen swimming in runny sauce, salad was ok i looked around and expressions on peoples faces told me everyone else was in the same mind as us. main course delivered, much better than starter thank you salmon was lovely, however half way through it, and only half the room had been served the act came on. so in between trying to eat, dodge the waitresses and video the show it was very disappointing indeed. in fact on our footage the waitress can be heard to apologise for getting in the way at one point.i suppose we were some of the lucky ones as some poor beggars were still waiting for their mains. then came the table cleaning, more views blocked, this show is very much about the outfits, the look and the choreography not just the music so it matters a great deal that the view is blocked so much, then comes a warm, grainy piece of synthetic tasting, "cheesecake" , horrible, just horrible, not worth the money at all. i must point out all the staff were polite throughout and probably somewhat embarrassed serving such sub standard food, leaning in front of people trying to watch and clearly having no order in which the tables were served.

When ours came out they said that it was dairy free, we had to question this. Only to be told that actually it wasn't, e.g. The scones had milk powder in it. There was no excuse for this to have happened. We had booked the table and told them that there were allergies. I had nothing to eat whilst others tucked into their food. After an excellent afternoon tea at The Earl a year ago, we visited again for a lunchtime sandwich. We were apprehensive after reading the bad reviews for visits over the Christmas period. The room was almost empty - four ladies on another table and us. We ordered a couple of sandwiches and tea. The sandwiches took ages to arrive, and were just average. Roast beef and red onion chutney. The beef was thinly cut, stringy and grisly. It was served with chunky chips - very dark brown and looked like Jenga pieces. Just ok. The tea was good though. There was no atmosphere at all. It will be a while before we visit here again, if at all. if lunchtime business continues like this, there could soon be no demand. Come on Earl, pull your socks up. It's a shame for such a lovely venue to be empty.

As seeing the bad reviews over Christmas we still decided to book a table at the earl because we couldn't possibly think it was that bad. My wife and sister in law booked a table for a surprise 60th birthday party on Saturday 2nd January ( So they thought ). My wife decided to phone up around 45mins before our expected arrival just to see if it was ok still to go in and put decorations on the table as discussed on BOOKING to be told there was no booking for us and the kitchen was closed. Well you should off seen the shock on there faces. The rude lady (saying no names on here but you know who you were) couldn't even say sorry which ive come across people like this before never there fault maybe it wasn't but at end of day she could not even be bothered to try and come up with a solution to there problem they caused. Apparently we had made the mistake and booked the date in for the 12th which maybe this would of been the case if her birthday was then but it wasn't it was the 2nd like discussed at time of the booking. Seen as though you dont do surprise partys because maybe you forget about the booking ( then again that is a great surprise for the unsuspecting person) i will tell you it is disgusting this day and age for this to happen maybe once but definitely not twice in such a short space of time. Well we got it sorted if you would care to know. After sending taxis to pick our guests up who had already arrived and quickly sorting a venue out within 20mins. The 60th birthday surprise was a success but held at the pastures lodge instead, excellent venue. You should send your staff there for training next time they might learn a little bit of empathy and customer service.

The Earl of Doncaster looks beautiful enough. Never having eaten there before, I foolishly booked dinner for Christmas Eve. The evening started off quite badly, as we were shown to a table with a loose fitting top that rattled and moved every time one of us leaned on it. We asked to move tables, which they did (after a bit of persuasion) but the bread rolls we had chosen were left behind, to the surprise of the family who were then seated at the same table a few minutes later. We requested new rolls but had no choice this time and one of them was soggy, so had to be replaced and we had to ask for butter. The starters were very average. 'Garlic mushrooms on ciabatta' were served in a watery 'sauce' and the ciabatta replaced with french bread which had fallen into the sauce - do they have a policy on serving soggy bread? My chicken and ham terrine was too cold but it was nice. The limp lettuce leaf and a single cherry tomato cut in half was expertly arranged on the plate along with a pot of piccalilli lovingly spooned from a jar. The mains were no better. One involved two very tiny pieces of braised fillet of beef carefully balanced on a sea of mashed potato and the duck breast was ruined with tough soggy skin. All the mains came with bog standard, unimaginative and over cooked vegetables. The desserts were entertaining, as I thought I'd mistakenly ordered a large slice of pork pie when my apple and cinnamon tart arrived. The filling was ok but the pastry was dire. The Christmas pudding was a bought in job - possibly microwaved and therefore it was at least edible. To finish this culinary extravaganza we were served the smallest minced pies ever to be mass produced and coffee with complimentary grounds - the taste was absolutely horrible. The waiters were absolutely charming throughout and as helpful as they could be, despite the Fawlty Towers elements. At least we were spared the absolute fiasco and disappointment that the Christmas Day diners experienced. Do yourself a favour and don't even consider eating here.

Booked a table for 16 many weeks in advance. They told me as it was going to be busy on the day in question they would like the food order in advance, to which I did. We were told we could have the table between 1pm and 3pm as it was booked for 3.30 no problem I replied as the party was for a 91 yr old I couldn't see us out staying our welcome. At 1.30 someone started taking guest orders I asked why when the order had been given weeks in advance and confirmed that morning along with an extra 2 seats. By 2 pm we had no food when question I was told it is all prepared to order and so I should expect to wait, I said well the order was placed 3 weeks ago so how long does it take to make a sandwich? At 2.15 the classic teas came out at 2.50 the savoury teas ! I asked where the pre ordered vegetarian tea was I was told it came out earlier?! Then I was told ALL teas come with vegetarian options. I had to point out that a cheese sandwich stuck between tuna and ham doesn't fit my criteria and why wasn't this mentioned when I placed order? Overall room is stunning/ food was fair/poor and service was shocking. Our guests on leaving said to me thank you but could we have tea at yours next year as it's far nicer! We spent almost 400 pound to be told my teas are nicer! Such a shame

I was looking forward to our Christmas lunch with a party of friends but was very disappointed with the food. The main course was plated up (take it or leave it) and although the staff were very on the ball getting it on the table the food certainly wasn't up to previous years standard. There was only small helpings of Christmas pudding and the trio of deserts and mince pies were very disappointing. Also the coat cupboard was a junk room with a rail and half a dozen coat hangers. Not very impressive for one of Doncasters main Hotels.

Stayed at the hotel and decided to check out the restaurant as the online menu looked good. Disappointed it was just a fixed price bog stand menu on a Saturday night which was no match to the standard of the sample menu. Service was poor and the cooking standard abysmal.

decided to lunch here on the spur of the moment, it is a hotel restaurant, and a lovely art deco style decor but a little refurb on the seating around the sides of the restaurant wouldnt go amiss, or a little cleaning, (food debris in the folds). we were offered the lunch menu, light bites, afternoon tea and a halloween tea special menu. drinks order was taken but slow in returning. we chose from the lunch menu and a light bite. the fresh cooked food was superb, the chicken madras was presented beautifully, good helping of excellently spiced curry, a mound of perfect rice, poppadums and naan bread and was pronounced to be as good as it looked, my sandwich of roast beef, horseradish and onion marmalade was just as delicious as were the double cooked chips. however the front of house staff waited until our meal was almost over before they came and asked for feedback, not giving chance to say if anything was wrong, luckily the food was of a very high standard, and on checking the time almost 40 minutes was spent trying to catch the attention of the waiting staff to ask for the bill, eventually i had to shout a very indifferent restaurant manager over who made no apology. the food was very well priced a main meal, light bite, 3 excellent coffees (although the last coffee order was wrong) 2 sparkling waters, and mint chocolates came to just under £22. i would eat here again just for the food but not for the service,

Once again stayed 2 nights here rooms excellent, breakfast fantastic s3cond to none. Dinner good but seem to be concentrating on presentation before anything else, beautifully presented but definitely less foid for your money, sorry but in my opinion thats not the way to go. We had afternoon tea both savoury and traditional they were both more than excellent, pleny well presented, extremely tasty, delicious as good as it lokks on downton abbey. Highly recommend this hotel ti everyone, the service is second to none as is the atmosphere, and the staff are more than friendly, helpful, kindand above all make you feel very very welcome, nothing is to much ttrouble for them. And not forgetting the cleaning staff who keep the rooms and indeed the whole hotel spotlessly clean, not an easy job but all credit to them they do it perfectly and with a smile on their face, I only hope the management appreciate there efforts as much as I do.

I booked afternoon tea at the hotel for my Mums 73rd birthday. I made the booking by telephone and was told that the 2 children in the group would be charged half price. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted very pleasantly and my initial impression was a good one. How things change! The waitress asked which price afternoon tea we wanted, I stated that we had been told on the phone the children would be charged half price, she rudely denied all knowledge of this and said they would not be able to do that. As our group was 3 adults and 2 children we ordered 4 adult afternoon teas as we thought this would easily be enough food, how wrong we were. The amount of sandwiches was pitiful most of the food was scones! When paying for the food my mum asked if she could take the scones home. The waitress then insisted that I sign a disclaimer to enable us to do this (I have never been asked to do this before). To top it all off,on our way out the manager stopped my mum (in front of other customers) and asked her if she had settled her bill! This was supposed to be a lovely treat for her birthday, we had travelled from hull especially to visit the hotel and it turned out to be a total disaster!!

Girlfriend booked for Sunday lunch a month ago. They called this week to say they were cancelling the booking due to "Leger breakfasts". So if the hotel is full they can't cope with breakfast and lunch. Asked why they took the booking in the first place reply was "we shouldn't have". Booked the Crown at Bawtry instead where it was no problem and they will be full also. Pathetic excuse of a hotel. Avoid.

booked a table for 6 and couldn't go in the restaurant because our son was u14, so had to have carvery in the ballroom, which was nowhere near the standard of the restaurant we had previously visited. There was to start with less choice & all the meat was overcooked, there was a poor choice of vegetables. on one occasion we were taking a family photo at the table & the head waiter leaned over to take a plate, couldn't wait 30 seconds! Poor choice of desserts with little taste

Me and my friend went for afternoon tea today as we were celebrating our birthdays which are both on the same day ,this happened to be the reason for our visit. On arrival I asked is there anything special towards two birthdays we were told no as there had to be four or more guests. We felt really disappointed at this, we thought maybe a complimentary drink wouldn't be too much to ask. We ordered the classic afternoon tea and we specifically asked for only the ham, cheese and egg sandwiches, the waitress repeated our order back to us. When the order arrived we realised that we didn't have the sandwiches that we requested so we had to ask the waitress who went back into the kitchen , 10 minutes later the sandwiches came back. This time they had forgotten the egg sandwiches, so again i call the waitress over and she takes them back into the kitchen. We felt disappointed with our first visit to the Earl for afternoon tea. It was like one disappointment after another , not what we wanted on our birthday.

Had table booked for 7pm 40 minutes before someone came to take our order, 5 people upgraded on the steak vs burger menu 2 to fillet and 3 to rib eye after waiting another 45 minuets for meals to come out both fillets was requested medium rare with vegetables came medium well done with chips. Looking round the restaurant the chips that was served to everyone in our party was different to other diners, ours were small scabby frozen like and others were large thick cut home made. A complaint was made about the 3 rib eyes being greasy, thin and small after paying £4.50 from the sirloin upgrade which we waited another 20 minutes to be resolved, the extra £4.50 was taken from each of these, which was fine just feel the service was terrible, the wait was ridiculous and orders were not fulfilled.

After meeting up with friends at 6 pm we awaited the arrival of the Birthday Girl. Initially the waitresses were very attentive, but as more people arrived (a party which included the owner of the establishment) things started to become more drawn out. As the meals came out it was clear that they couldn't cope with a table of 20 because by the time some of us received our meal, other members of the party had finished theirs. So to me the timings needed perfecting. Some of the portions were quite small too. If you ordered steak, which I did, this was the better option, you seemed to have a plate full rather than a small amount. We eventually finished our meal at 8.45 pm and to me that is most unsatisfactory. We then had to wait for the bill, but we needed to leave by 9 pm so we ended up just leaving our money with someone, (the owner's presence seemed to put the staff in turmoil, but they came in much later than us and their meal was served quicker and they finished around the same time as us!!)

High Tea....what a joke!...possibly the lowest level of customer service I have experienced. I wished I had taken the hint from the couple on the next table who had been waiting for their Sunday lunch for over 1 hour twenty minutes, only to walk out after tasting it..After waiting 1 hour 10 mins ourselves to be served our overpriced sandwiches , one with a human hair attached to it and the cheese scone without the marmalade and the elusive scotch salmon sandwiches and candy floss we were asked if we were happy!!. I couldn't even wash it down with a cup of tea as the first pot came with a burst tea bag, followed by a second the same and only after complaining again did the tea come when we had virtually finished. The portion which arrived was also pathetic for the price, I will never return to this place again which is pretending to be something it is clearly not.

I had been here before for afternoon tea a few years ago and remembered it being lovely. 8 of us booked it as a family get together. We all had the classic afternoon tea. Firstly the waitress was very friendly and was also happy to take a particular order from someone who didn't like all of the sandwiches on offer. The place is beautiful and has a lovely atmosphere. However, the tea and coffee service was quite slow and we were very often without a drink. The food was brought out and the first thing we noticed was that there weren't many sandwiches. The next problem was that the bread was stale! At least 6 of us commented on the bread being stale. They must have been sat out for a while. The scones were rock solid! They can't have been fresh. Im usually full after afternoon tea and can't finish what there is but I went home hungry. There were only about 3 tables with people on in the restaurant but I think they had another couple of functions on and maybe we got their leftovers or they were too busy to focus on their guests in the restaurant. It was reasonable as it was only £10.95 but I'm not really happy paying for stale sandwiches and hard scones! A couple of our group thought it was fine and were happy but I don't think I'll be booking in for afternoon tea again.

Two courses is a mere £15.95. I had a very tasty, home made, ham hock terrine followed by fish and chips. The batter was crisp and the cod flakey. The toast accompanying the terrine should have been drier and the chips chips crisper. But it was a good meal overall, with very pleasant service. A small bottle of water was £1.50. The dining room was almost empty on the night I ate: just four other people. The decor is a little over the top but if you like Poirot or Busby Berkeley movies, you can imagine you are in your own Art Deco fantasy!

We went as a family for a treat with our parents on a Sunday lunchtime. The surroundings are special & you feel honoured to in this place! The menu has something for everyone & the price is great, affordable to all. They do 2 courses for £14.95 or 3 courses for £19.95 & the quality for the price is amazing. You can just have one course but why would you gor such a bargain price? We enjoyed the soup which was delicious & then split with the beef roast lunch which was also delicious & came with a fabulous yorkshire pud & amazing rosemary roast potatoes & veg selection. Others had pie Mmmmmm the pie was scrummy & if you like 'proper chips' it's your lucky day as the chips are second to none!!! We could only manage 2 courses but devoured every bit if our food! The service is superb from all staff so you truly are spoilt on your visit. We WILL be visiting again. There is ample parking round the back too so don't be fooled by the few spaces out front. They also have event nights on which look great. So overall well worth a visit for every occasion!

Myself and my wife had a three course evening meal at the Earl one Saturday night early January. We were knocked out initially with the Art -deco interior which looked fabulous. As we were led to our table I was slightly concerned that the restaurant was only a quarter full and it was a Saturday night. First problem was that it took the staff over 30 mins to bring us the wine even when we had reminded them on a couple of occasion. Regarding the food I had sea bass which was very basic and seemed very dry and tasteless with no sauce as such, my wife had sole which was basically the same. The other courses were very average. I must say that the staff were polite but not necessarily efficient. I do think that the Earl has so much potential with its great location and stunning decor but it just needs a visible manager and a good chef.

Visited yesterday for afternoon tea, pre-booked as it's the busy time of year. They also serve a normal lunch menu throughout the year, sandwiches, paninis etc, all seemed very competitively priced. The tea was presented on a 3 tier cake stand and consisted of small sandwiches on the top layer. You could choose between turkey and cranberry, home cooked ham(not the pre-packaged sort) smoked salmon, cheese, or egg mayonnaise. All served on either white or wholemeal bread - no crusts. The second layer had a selection of cakes- chocolate eclair, mini brownie, mince pies, and a slice of fruit tart. the bottom layer had fresh fruit scones with generous pots of clotted cream and strawberry jam. The crockery was white china, and it really felt special to be there, with napkins and Christmas crackers to fit with the decor of the room. Tea or coffee was served in generously sized pots, which were quickly refilled on request. The room used is a large size, decorated in Art Deco style as is the rest of the hotel. The service was good and the staff friendly, we were not rushed or felt we had to vacate the table before we were ready to. It was extremely good value at £10.95 per person. We'll certainly be visiting again, highly recommended

I didn't stay in a room at the earl so can't comment but if you're coming here for afternoon tea & paying the full price I wouldn't bother! Afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, a selection of cakes & 2 scones & tea or coffee is £10.95 each. We had a purple voucher which is 241 and it's a good job we didn't pay £22 for what we received! We got 8 finger sandwiches, a mixture of cheese, ham etc on basic white bread & 2 on brown, nothing special. We got a selection of small cakes (I think 6) which were quite nice except the donut one which was really dry. The two fruit scones were dry & not enjoyable at all. We each had a tea & coffee. The service wasn't great, nor was it bad just middle of the road. Yes the interior is beautiful but I think they're overcharging on the afternoon teas to pay the interior designers bill!

I have never met a less interested barman in my life. We called in for cocktails in their rather smart cocktail bar, and ordered two Margaritas. Then sat down and watched as he served four other orders at the bar without even starting on our order. When he then started taking another large round of bar orders, and I asked him why he wasn't doing ours, the answer was "can't you see I am busy?" as he carried on. We left - and won't ever return. Myself and 3 friends (2 came from Lancashire) went to the Earl of Doncaster for afternoon tea on 27 Nov 2013 and it was a terrible the experience. There is a catalogue of issues but the main one is that the food was terrible. After waiting 25 minutes, the gluten free sandwiches for one of our party were inedible due to the rubbery bread (and yes we do know all about the difference between texture of gluten free and usual bread) - this was inedible. When asked, the waiter said that the cakes were all gluten free, which when we asked him to check with the chef turned out that none were gluten free. The lady was offered a fruit salad - hardly the gluten free afternoon tea which we were assured would be available. The manager said that he would not charge for my friends food, however, when we went to pay, the waiter said we could use only one of our 2 for 1 vouchers because there was now only 3 of us, then charged us full price for the 3rd person so we ended up paying the same as we would have done if everything had been edible. There was more and I could go on but to say we were bitterly disappointed is an understatement. I rarely if ever complain but please believe me when I say that our whole experience was terrible.

Not the place it used to be. Gone dirty and the gents toilet was disgusting as it looked like it hadn't been properly and hygienically bathroom cleaned for weeks. Service was slow and staff run off their feet because there wasn't enough of them. The once glorious soughdough bread has gone and there are no tea cakes (at Easter!!!). Such a shame as I used to enjoy going here....but not anymore. For the prices you pay, it is poor value for money. The owners have run the place down and should be ashamed. It used to be great
