Helpful staff, pleasant surroundings but food very poor. In particular the Risotto with wild mushrooms and spinach. It was tasteless and no attempt made to present it well or garnish it. Just a heap of soggy rice. Embarrassing as friend was paying. Pie and chips reasonable. Lion of pork very tough stuffing. Talked up big but better food in market cafe at half the price

So today I had a special experience at the Owston lodge! I ordered the steak melt. When it came it was lovely but no sign of any peppers. So I asked the staff if it should have come with peppers. She says no ’ it says it on the menu but we don’t do it’ oh I thinks. Should it perhaps be taken off the menu then. Well we’re changing the menu anyway. Is that ok? Well no not really I said I might have ordered something else had I known. Off she walks no sorry or anything. 20 minutes later the chef comes marching over with a purpose. And really loudly declares ‘ I hear there’s a problem with the food’ well the problem is the menu I said as it advertises something you don’t serve. ‘Yes well we don’t serve peppers with that it just says that on the menu. Is that ok?’ Well no not really says I. If you dont serve it, it shouldn’t be in the menu and you should tell people when they order. ‘ Well they’re changing the menu anyway she says. There’s nothing I can do about it’ All this is almost shouted at me in the restaurant which is now starting to fill up. So I said I am not really sure why you felt the need to come out here to talk to me about this which is an issue with the menu not with the food or why you feel the need to speak to me in a manner which suggests I have done something wrong. Off she walks. I then ask to speak to the manager, she’s not in today but take my details so she can ring me tomorrow. Can’t offer me any discount on the food as the manager is not here. At least the younger staff member apologised. Ten minutes after I get home and paid in full the manager Amber rings me. I repeat the story and add my concern as to what was said to the chef that made her think it was ok to come out and speak to me like that. Manager very apologetic. Apparently the staff are fully aware of this issue on the menu and also some other issues that have been brought to their attention. Next time I am in if I identify myself she will sort some drinks. Why on earth would I want to go back? My dad reminded me food was missing when we were served last time and I am thinking is this why I haven’t back in a long time. Shoddy service. Rude and disinterested staff and so disappointing. No real effort to recompense and no real apology.

Checked into the pub around 2pm on Sunday and greeted by the barman. The space has a cosy, pubby feel and we chose a nice spot near a round, open window. Despite carvery being the only main being served, we decided to commit and we pleasantly surprised with the meal. Each of us were served a good portion of meat, a crisp, large Yorkshire pie and a sausage; the veg was fresh and tasted gorgeous. We usually go to Toby for all our carvery needs but this was very nice. Only criticisms was that it was slightly cold in the pub and the gravy was quite watery. Other than this, the meal was lovely and would definitely return! 👍🏼

We came down to visit Friends and we was told to go to this place to meet up. We walked in with a warm welcome from the head chef Becky, who took us to our table and made us feel very welcome. We had a meal and it was lush. The staff came over and checked in on us and was very helpful! Big shoutout to all staff especially Becky.

we went for fish and chips and they said there was no fish and chips and the drinks cost us£10 for 2 pints this we found very exspensive so after drinking up we came out and will never be going back

Used to love Owston but last experience left us disappointed. Bar staff friendly but had to talk to manager who was very unfriendly. Meal itself was subpar, stuff like chips and gamon were good but burger was lacking and lasagne had practically no meat in it, obviously cutting corners. Overall, not in any rush to return.

Waited for an hour for the food and when it arrived the order was wrong. The chips were inedible. and the wrong order was never corrected, leaving an unhappy 4 year old When we made a complaint we were fobbed off as they did not expect did not expect the pub to be busy, ( Christmas week!!) When we asked to speak to the Manager we were told she was too busy to see us, 1/10 for customer service. We have been regulars here bit never again.

I pre booked an afternoon tea for my daughter's birthday, the young man I spoke to checked the date, time, took contact number and spoke to the chef to confirm the reservation. When we arrived, they said we were not booked in. Not a good start !! We were told they could "squeeze" us in. The whole place was empty apart from a group of workmen in high viz gear drinking beer and one table occupied by a couple. The lady said it would take about 20minutes to set the table. so we waited, probably around 30 minutes , we were then seated at the furthest possible table away from the fire, we actually kept our coats on !! The food came out and was fresh and well presented, good value for money. We had to ask for our tea /coffee which seemed to have been forgotten. The lady said there was scones yet to come out but they didn't arrive. Strange set up as the bar was left un attended and we actually had to look for someone to speak to as did other people who came in later

It's taken us awhile to visit The Owston, we managed it on a Friday afternoon in October. We had the lunchtime special 2 meals for around £18?, Gammon plus fish and chips. Plenty in the plate and served reasonably quickly, amazing real chips- like mamma used to make! Food and service was good, friendly and professional- didn't see any cask beer on offer because the labels were back to front- I was driving so didn't ask- seemed disappointing if this was tne case. I'd recommend this establishment to anyone.

Just had a meal here and it was ok but the chips were really overcooked and not great . My daughter had a kids meal but didn’t eat the chips as they were over cooked and at £6.99 I thought it would have been nicer . I don’t really want to slate the place cos I know times are hard especially for business’s but there’s so much potential in this place it could be really nice with basic things like , as soon as you walk in it was cold there was no music no atmosphere, I wasn’t sure if it was even open . There was food on the floor obviously from the day before. The womens toilets didn’t look like they had been cleaned for a while. It’s things like this that would make a big difference to get people back through your door . Also I paid £6.95 for a sundea which was just mint ice cream with squirty cream on ,there was no layers of anything other than abit of chocolate sauce inside the glass . I would love to see these things addressed then maybe we may come back but I won’t be returning in a hurry as I was disappointed.

Went here as we were staying at a local hotel. The food was amazing and steak to dye for. Would definitely pop in if we're in the area again.

Visited on an evening,was told to sit anywhere we wanted (was very quiet) sat down and asked the waitress if we could have a menu for food, she said yes grab one yourself from the bar (not helpful at all) then said food stops in 15mins (8pm) We quicky made out order at the bar and waited for food, arrived about 15mi s after nd was delicious, home made chips and steaks cooked as we had asked, no problems with the food at all!! Was then told pub shuts at 9, so we hurried to finish our drinks, and they started to turn the lights off whilst we were finishing this made us feel uncomfortable and that we had out stated our welcome! Staff were extremely rude, not helpful amd clearly did not appreciate having customers in to dine, we felt we were in their way and they wanted us out asap. We would love to eat again there, food was lovely, staff and the welcoming feel of the place are dismal, so would not go again in a hurry.

3 of us ate there last night 26th August, both daughters meals just ok, mine even a dog would not have been able to eat that steak. Worst toughest steak I have ever had, told the young bar lad about the meal and all I got was a sorry about that. No offer of anything else or free drink or nothing. Paid £14 to only be able to eat a few chips and 2 onion rings. Will never eat there again, used to always book this place before new management for family get togethers sorry this will not happen again.

Closer Saturday Night... Open Sunday Lunch... Not the best first impressions. Attempted to dine here and try for the first time on a Saturday night... But the place was closed, no signs no nothing, tried calling beforehand but obviously no answer. There was however a function going on so maybe not enough staff to cover both? Either way, somw kind of notice/sign/anything to let potential diners knownwould be great. For that (and soke tiny issues below) ... I cant go higher than a 4. So... By chance we were driving by the day after around lunch and noticed lights were on. So we stopped to try the food. Disappointing thst only carvery was being offered (Daddy not a fan of carvery) but we were hungry so we sat down. Very small carvery section and not alot of choice BUT it would seem these guus are going for Quality and not Quantity. Very good food that we had, meats were nicely cooked (tried the turkey, gammon and beef) and as a nice bonus... Sausages are part ofnthe self serve!! Veggies cooked cracking and the gravy was just about right. The small issues, no peas.... Sunday lunch without peas is sacrilege haha. Yorkshire puddings, the star of a sunday lunch in our opinion.... Looked fantastic, and thats it, unfortunately these were jist hollow crispy shells of yorkshire pud lookalikes. Pure imposters! One of the cooked hand balled cooked ready to eat food from pans intonthe carvery. Not good. And would reflect some of the hygiene practices that contributed to their 4 star hygiene rating. Some small tweaks to be made for a 5 in oir opinion but we will return for a try of the al a carte menu.

Called at the Owston for lunch today. Only a few tables occupied and a couple of staff waiting on. Told to sit where ever we wanted. Ordered drinks before sitting down and these took ages to arrive. I had the pie which was gigantic however pastry was cooked on the outside but raw inside. Chips over cooked and a jug of watery gravy. The other half had a chicken sizzler he ordered this with a wrap and it came with both chips and a wrap but not the advertised Sour cream, guacamole or cheese. At no point did anybody come across to ask if everything ok or clear the plates. After quite a while we went to the bar to pay and expressed our complaint. We were told sorry but its a new chef!!! Will not be back both food and service not good enough.

I’m sorry to have to say this but this was the worst meal we’ve had in a long while. Hard pies that were so hard mine almost broke my teeth, and it had a funny fusty taste about it? I am sure it wasn’t fresh....

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a meal so bad yes it was reasonably priced but that’s no excuse for what got put in front of me and my partner won’t be going again which is a shame because it’s beautiful just a shame...

Well, first time eating here and let's say it be the last, Chips were soggy and oiley and the onion rings were the same only good thing Was the burger but having to pay 1 quid for a plastic cheese slice with the plastic left on is a joke... Yes they got the refund but it was disgusting need more kitchen staff if they can't handle the rush... Too much grease no taste.

Me and my partner visited today for something to eat. We were greeted by a friendly lady who seated us at our table. We noticed straightaway how messy the place was. Mashed potato all over the floor, straws on the floor and dirty tissues. These should have been picked up by a member of staff. We were given a main menu and a carvery menu to look at. Both menus were sticky and had food on them. To be honest we should have gone somewhere else but we were both really hungry and we didn’t have time to look for somewhere else. We both decided on a carvery so we went up to the bar to order. We were then told the carvery had finished so we had to go look at the menu to choose something else. My partner chose the steak pie and I chose the chicken burger. The food didn’t take too long to come. The pie was ok but the portion sizes were small and my chicken burger was ok. Nothing special but it’s what you expect when eating in a chain pub. As we were eating a member of staff who had been working behind the bar when we first arrived came and sat at a table across from us to have a drink with a friend. I cannot believe how rude and ill mannered this man was. He was talking so loudly with his friend about his personal life which included lots of swearing. Not professional at all. He was also burping loudly and picking his nose, not what you want to see when you’re eating. Me and my partner couldn’t believe it. Obviously everyone’s allowed a break or a drink at the end of their shift but to sit across from customers who are eating and behave like that is disgusting. Nobody came to ask us if everything was ok with our food and nobody asked as we were leaving. Like I say, the foods not great but it’s ok and it’s what you expect. It’s the staff that let this place down. They need to keep on top of cleaning and learn how to behave in front of customers. We will not be going back.

We had booked a table for 19.30 on Saturday 11th January 2020. We arrived at about 19.15. The bar area was quite busy. The bar staff looked quite flustered. We were shown to our table. We made our food choices, and the order was placed at the bar. After about 15 minutes it quietened down quite signficantly. After waiting 40 minutes I went to speak to a member of staff to tell her how long we had waited. She went away to check. A minute later she returned to our table saying our food would be out next and she apologised saying that they had a function on and that they were very busy. When the food arrived a couple of minutes later, I must admit, it was good, nice and hot but myself and my husband's meals were both missing a roasted flat mushroom! No member of staff came to ask if everything was ok. The food itself was good, but the service wasn't. Not sure if we will return.

Well..... sad to report it was very disappointing. No ham on the carvery (despite it being on the menu), vegetable options were bland, watery and tasteless. No cauli- cheese or mashed potato and can you believe for Christmas Dinner NO SPROUTS! We've have had some quite nice meals here but sadly this was not one of them. At £35 a head (for a party of 8) it wasn't the cheapest and we would definitely not go there for Christmas again

Been going to the Owston for around 19 years now on and off and seen various owners/managers come and go but I can honestly say tonight will be the last time . Flat beer, warm soft drinks and the barely warm food, 2 pies , burger and chicken tikka ( at least that’s what we ordered) would have been a poor excuse for school dinners. Gone seriously down hill .

Could not fault the starter when we got it which was not till after 8 pm then came the main and it was cold it took 2 hours to serve meals they missed the tea and coffee,s and mince pies which we had to ask for it and show them it was included in the meal from the meal the turn did not start till 10 o’clock not a good evening when you are paying 30 pounds a head .

Well where do I start first I’d like to thank the manger who was very helpful and Racheal our waitress who was so lovely , then secondly the food was wonderful there was 11 of us came to have our Christmas meal and every start was purfect along with 10 roast turkey dinners and 1 cod ( I’d eat that cod everyday it was yummy ) then the pudding was a very nice finishing touch , can’t wait to go back again soon , I’ve got to say you did make our service users feel very welcome and they enjoyed the whole experience thanks to yourselfs and your waitresses and not to forget the chef thank you .

The food was exceptional! Served fast and hot. The chicken and mushroom pasta is the best I've ever had! I visited with my children one of them is 18 month old and the staff were very attentive and friendly they couldn't do enough for us. Lovely atmosphere and warm welcome. The owston is clean, affordable and family friendly. I would recommend to all.

We had a fabulous experience when enjoying a family birthday meal for our daughter. The service and food were excellent, the environment was tasteful, comfortable and relaxing and we were well looked after by friendly, attentive and helpful staff.

Firstly the food was fine for Pub Food and drink reasonable price.Comfortable and warm inside.We booked ahead,got there in tim,were shown to a table - then nothing.25 minutes later I went to the bar and sarcastically asked if we were supposed to order at the bar _ “yes’’ - Why did no-one tell us ? “Sorry’’ - Poor stuff!! They then overcharged me on 4 fish dishes ( special Fish Friday) and kindly apologised - but sat there for 25 minutes -not great !! ( Oddly the table had no number -I remembered from the reservation!)

Went for a carvery, it was shockingly bad, the roast potatoes was disgusting the turkey was dry and I had some rock hard pieces in it no idea what it was, the mash felt like it was cooked days before not fresh at all. Frozen Yorkshire puddings, won’t be going back, also was stood at the carvery waiting for someone to come out and serve us for 5 mins, the staff are as bad as the food

Enjoyed an excellent meal in a nice cosy environment served by friendly and helpful staff. There was a good choice of food on the menu, including vegetarian options, and the portions were plentiful and very tasty.

The Owston was our choice of venue for around 50 guests, in the private function room.

I came here not long after it had been taken over and enjoyed the meal but they have really upped their game.

Litterally just left here. We rocked up to 2 lady’s at the waiting station with a wonderful smile and a very warm welcome. Lovely quiet place good for kids also. The Carvery was absolutely on point. Me and my partner got large, plate size at first glance looked small but no there not there is more than enough. The beef was very succulent as was the pork. The crackiling was like it was from an all new dimesion wasn’t soggy and basically is what it is on pancaking. Veg was all fresh and aldentay (just how I like it not soggy mush) good selection good food plenty to order of the main menu. Will 100% be back.

Just returned from The Owston after having a lovely Sunday dinner. It's the first time we've been since the new owners took over, and after reading some of the previous reviews we were not sure what to expect.

This pub was taken over just after Xmas after the previous owners ran it into the ground, I have to say now this pubs food has come on leaps and bounds.

I think the place is a nice to have something to eat , but I have food which I do think it up to par and the staff is very rude and the chef come out the kitchen he was very rude. I don't think I will be going back again

I used to visit here often a few years ago. I hadnt been for several years but was up in the area visiting my ancient mother who wanted to go out for lunch. I looked on trip advisor and saw the few recent bad reports so decided to come here as I have found bad reports are usualy not representative of the general standard at such venues. So to sum up. Well kept car park. Easy access to all areas. Clean and wiped tables. Lovely welcome from young lady at the bar, you know who you are. I saw a couple of staff who both were friendly and talkative. Excellent pint of Tim Taylors. Varied choice of meals at very keen prices. Both meals were absolutely fine and hot. Two puds to finish. Whats not to like? I will go again when in the area. Thanks all.

After hearing mixed reviews since reopening, we thought we would see for ourselves. Went for a sunday carvery, just 2 of us, at the door we were welcomed and shown to our seats. Reasonably priced for a sunday carvery, I was really hungry so went large for £2 more. I'm a white meat man so went for Turkey which could have done with a bit longer in oven, wife had beef and said it was fine. Vegetables were average, mash was lovely, broccoli was hard and uncooked, what few roasties there were(in 2 tins) were swimming in oil at bottom of tins so don't know if they were deep fried? some of the Yorkshires were more like pancakes which I wouldn't have had on my plate but managed to get one of the few that looked like Yorkshires. The cheese sauce is a good touch. We wouldn't say we'd never go again but I do hope it gets better, there are other places within a short drive we'd prefer for now.

Visited on Sunday 2 June on way home from Hull 10k. Usually visit once or twice a year for carvery and always been very good. This time it seems to have changed. There was less choice of vegetables and poorer quality. Was not impressed with carvery chef, instead of carving the meat in one direction which ensures a consistent nicely carved slice he kept turning the meat around. My slices were chewy and fatty due to this. Has always been a lovely carvery so it's such a shame, based on this visit would probably chose somewhere else now although a decent carvery becoming harder to find. Bar staff were friendly and efficient. The lady who greeted us did ask other diners if everything ok with their meals but didn't ask us so we couldn't give feedback. We both left our meat.

After deciding to re-visit this pub after its latest takeover, we were expecting a wonderful Sunday Carvery..... unfortunately this was not the case :(

I visited the owston a few weeks ago April with local friends has it changed hands what a transformation because the food served on Sunday was utterly disgusting poorly cooked joints appalling vegetables tasteless warm gravy, My friends paid I would not have paid. we left and will never return this is a place so mismanaged by utter amateurs I have read below the condescending and patronising responses of the so called manager and am not interested at all in what he has to say i forgive him because he knows not what he does they clearly have no skilled chefs in the kitchen what a shame this place is being so badly run by total amateurs, who ever is responsible for setting up the system for Sunday should be immediately dismissed, I would imagine that is the patronising G Manager, Why don't you get a real GM. and sought this place out. No response unless its just that your sorry and have resigned with immediate affect.

We have just eaten here today and have had a wonderful experience. I myself had the steak and ale pie and it was to die for, my husband had a lamb kebab and thoroughly enjoyed it the kids had a title grill and a tower burger and was well worth it we will definitely be going back it was a lovely place with lovely staff and great food well done

"Do you think you should change your mind" ? I said to my Wife as a slab of red running turkey was being put on her plate.

Three of us and our dog came here for Sunday lunch,the carvery was really well cooked and presented. Having cheese sauce separately from the cauliflower is a nice touch (I love it my ,husband hates it ) the staff were very pleasant and friendly even though they were busy .

This is my third visit to the Owston, always made to feel welcome by all the staff and the ambience has always been great and the food has never failed to delight my taste buds, as a lifelong pie lover I can definitely recommend the Steak and Ale pie, big chunks of lean steak in a lovely rich Ale gravy. I’ll definitely be back.

I have been to the Owston a few times, and have always thoroughly enjoyed myself. The staff are very welcoming and the place gives off a really warming atmosphere. I ordered a Sirloin steak on my latest visit and it was delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection with a lovely chargrilled taste. The chips, onion rings and peppercorn sauce was also out of this world, I definitely recommend this dish. The other food has always been to a similar excellent standard, this place definitely gets my recommendation.

Had an evening meal when on a business trip. The food is good basic pub food. I had chicken & ham pie, which was nicely cooked and well presented, although I am not a fan of food served in pots. The staff were cheerful and friendly. My only slight quibble was with the dessert. I had pancakes with maple syrup, but they could have been a bit more generous with the maple syrup

Home roast potatoes home made Yorkshire pudding and on a carvary this place is a rare find to top it off my friend had a pie also home made with home made chips a rare find will definitely be coming back keep up the good work

Just had lunch at the owston. Absolutely lovely... great pub friendly staff and good wine list too... will be back.

We called here today we was totally ignored as we chose a place to sit, we looked at the menu and waited 15 mins for someone to come over and ask if we was ready to order but no one came,there were 2 staff near the bar who didn't even acknowledge us so we got up and left, will not be returning again

I really don't know how they get away with it to say it is sub standard would be an under statement poor quality from start to finish do they really have chefs in the kitchen the steak was tough the burger was so poor in quality and the the service was just as bad slow slow slow.

I must say that on Sunday last I heard the head chef and his friend talking about the staff in an in appropriate way . About a young woman's bust and they were really getting at the two ladies who were only trying to do there job . I found the atmosphere between the staff was very uncomfortable and the food was below par too . it is a shame you were doing so well before . I do think some one should have a word with the men though . the girls will not tell you I am sure. you do not go to work to be spoken to like they did .
