We were in Cornwall for four nights, and without a doubt, the best meal we've had was at Butchers Bistro. The food was simply outstanding. I had the scallops and fillet steak, and both were cooked to absolute perfection—hands down the best I’ve ever had. It’s rare to find a steak that is so well-cooked (rare) and full of flavor, but they nailed it here. During our trip, we also dined at Rick Stein’s and Paul Ainsworth’s restaurants, but tonight’s meal at Butchers Bistro topped them all. My husband had the steamed mussels and a medium steak, and he was just as impressed. The quality of the ingredients, the skill in the cooking, and the depth of flavor made this a truly exceptional dining experience. If you’re in Cornwall and looking for the best food around, Butchers Bistro is the place to go. A must-visit for steak lovers and seafood fans alike!

Amazing food we had the fish dish and beef dish both delicious ! Desert selection was great too and the service was very warming and friendly. Really recommend for high quality food and a great evenings meal!

After reading the reviews, we expected a lot more to be honest. Especially for the price. The starters were ok - but nothing particularly special. The steaks were very fatty. As we were leaving, we noticed the table next to us appeared to have very fatty steaks too. Maybe the other food is ok but I wouldn’t recommend the steaks. The staff were very pleasant but the decor could do with an update.

Came here 5/3, hardly anyone in and was greeted by a snooty waitress. She proceeded to tell us they were short staffed yet there was hardly anyone there and two chefs visible. When we enquired if we could wait as it was meant to be a nice restaurant we got a rather snooty reply again of “it’s not a case of how long you wait we are short staffed”. They need to train their staff in how to speak to customers. It’s meant to be the second best restaurant in Newquay but the attitude we got was very stuffy. Wouldn’t visit again.

The name of this restaurant suggests that the menu would be dominated by meat dishes but actually it is fish. Cooked to absolute perfection we had the scallops and the chowder to start. The scallops were delicious but paled in comparison to the chowder which was packed full of fish and the best we've ever tasted! We all chose the fish mariniere and were really impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the superb cooking of the fish. It's as good as anything we've eaten in France. Will definitely be returning.

This restaurant is a must to visit, the food was amazing fresh cornish scallops & halloumi wedges to start, then we had mushroom risotto and a fish combo. The server Laura made the experience she was so chatty and friendly and had great customer interaction. Wine was nice addition to the meal. Price of food was very reasonable for the quality. Make sure to try the homemade lavender foccachia it's a must

From the moment we walked in we were met with a warm welcome & the specials were explained. We chose the chowder & squid to start, they were both amazing. For mains we picked the slow cooked beef & grilled chicken breast we certainly weren't disappointed. Lovely place, great food & amazing service. Highly recommend.x

Wow! It was the tastiest food I've had in a long time! Service was friendly, the restaurant was cosy, the food first rate. I'd recommend the potato and leek soup and the slow cooked beef, mash and brocoli was 5* I was sad when my plate was empty.

I don't normally leave bad reviews. the food we had was very overcooked and dry. We did tell the waitress, she said she would pass the message on to the chef. We won't be returning

It's such a shame that this restaurant lacks much kerb appeal and the interior is a bit dated and doesn't seem to have much of an atmosphere, as the food was truly fabulous. We visited on a damp saturday night in January, and it was very quiet, and quite chilly inside the restaurant which was a bit disappointing. I though the steak was a bit overpriced once you added a sauce and some onion rings at £40, though I was assured it was really very well cooked and it was all delicious. My pasta dish was more reasonably priced and again very very tasty. I would definitely visit again, and do recommend if you can look past the uninviting appearance of the place.

Absolutely lovely food! Scallops to start were gorgeous accompanied by the wonderful Lavender bred. Husband’s steak was cooked to perfection and my fish of the day (Hake) was also faultless. Fabulous friendly service too. We’ll be back.

It's a real shame that a restaurant with such high ratings in a Cornish seaside town like Newquay would risk serving seafood that wasn't fresh. We dined at Butchers Bistro on the evening of December 13th and were very disappointed that the sole in the trio fish special and the crab claws in the seafood mariniere, tasted "off" – like they were past their prime. For a restaurant that specializes in local produce, and charges a premium price, we expected much better. The scallops starter, in the other hand, was a wonderful 5 stars dish.

Visited for dinner on a quiet December mid-week evening. The food choices all sounded delicious and in the end I opted for the fish chowder starter, which is one of the best dishes I've tasted in a long time! The rib-eye was cooked to perfection and was a quality cut of meat. My colleague ordered the trio of fish for his main and that was also incredible and fantastic value for the portion size! I just wish they were closer to Leicestershire so I can visit again!!

First visit to this restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. All the food was delicious. The leak and potato soup was delicious, the slow cooked beef was rich and tender, the trio of fish was fresh and cooked perfectly. Good portion sizes mean you’re not left wanting. Service was efficient and polite.

I had the fish chowder and the wild mushroom risotto (photos) my husband had the scallops and cottage pie (no photos). The portions were super generous and I couldn't finish mine 😅 The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere nice and cosy

We had a delicious meal last night, the prawn tagliatelle was possibly the best I’ve ever had! They catered for my boyfriend who is gluten free, and were dog friendly. Staff were great. Fantastic experience.

We had an absolutely delicious meal here last night. Possibly one of the nicest prawn tagliatelle’s I’ve ever had. My partner had a steak which was a great cut and cooked perfectly. We shared scallops to start and they brought out gluten free bread for him, and sourdough for me. They were very knowledgeable and reassuring regarding GF. Staff were great, really friendly. & they were dog friendly. Fantastic meal all round.

Absolutely blooming BEAUTIFUL! We already want to come back to try everything on the Menu. Mix of starters and Mains, Panko Squid, fresh squid and crispy panko crumb cooked perfectly. Fish Chowder one of the best we've ever tasted and again fresh with freshly "home" made bread. Mains 2 Steaks as that's what we'd set out to have but honestlyi could have eaten anything on the menu it sounded lovely, we had a Ribeye which was on the Specials board and a huge chunk of a Sirloin from the main menu, both cooked to perfection, hand cut chips with salad, (ps the salad dressing deserves 5*too). All of the meals bought out to other customers whilst we were there looked perfect too, so this will be our new place to visit! Staff are extremely professional, well organised and front of house perfection (coming from a similar background it was all just spot on. Not over not under fussy and we were extremely impressed with the service and staff) If you haven't visited please visit, book in advance to avoid disappointment! Good range of beers and a nice selection of wines too.

Highly recommended. Attentive staff, lovely ambiance and the food was sublime. If you relish a perfect steak, this is the place to go. We have had numerous disappointing experiences when going out specifically for steaks. I can honestly say, this is the best steak ever tasted! The quality of the meat is outstanding and it was cooked to perfection! Thank you. We will return most definitely.

I ate twice there as the food was so good and fresh and the staff very friendly. The first time I had a chowder the second time the three grilled fish. All super fresh and well done

My daughter had the prawn tagliatelle and said it was good. The fish in the fish trio was nice and well cooked but the veg that came with it were just a bit dull. They could have been more interesting and flavourful.

The first thing I noticed when we walked in was how immediately friendly and attentive the staff were. The atmosphere was very friendly and warming. I run a very busy retail business and I train all my staff to smile and speak to guests when they make eye contact. This was very evident immediately in this great little hidden gem of a restaurant. The selection on the menu is not to complicated which is a great sign of a restaurant doing the same dishes perfectly. My wife and I both ordered the special of fish cowder, which was genuinely one of the best I've eaten. No additional seasoning was required, which is common place with that dish, and the generous chunks of fish were very soft and flavourful. Served with some very nice sourdough gooey bread that was perfect for swatting up the remnants in the bowl. For Main course, my wife had the slow cooked beef with creamy garlic mash. She absolutely loved it and said that the mash was unbelievably nice. I had the 10oz Sirloin, and I asked for rare. In my experience, a lot of chefs always overcook a rare steak. This was absolutely perfect. The diane sauce on the side was also excellent. Creamy and packed full of flavour. Because those two dishes were so good and so generous in portion. We couldn't fit in a pud. I've never seen my wife NOT ORDER a pud. Wow. I love to see small family run business doing well. It is a true little hidden gem in Newquay. Next time we visit Newquay, we will definitely revisit. My only advice is, get a bigger and more prominent place because with simple yet top quality food like that, which is well priced, you'll fill the place easy. Thank you Mr and Mrs Blake. The best steak in the South West, we have been here multiple times and it never disappoints, truly beautiful steak. Excellent service and super staff.

I couldn't hope for better, born in a country of fishermen and with one of the best cuisines in the world, I consider myself a person who is demanding about what I eat, 5 stars, the fish is fresh and cooked to perfection, the friendly service and the hygiene is impeccable. Everything in proper proportion. Even the espresso looked like it was taken in Portugal. It wasn't cheap but I was still happy to leave a tip, such was the quality. Without a doubt, a place to return. Well done, and thank you very much.

UPDATE: September 2024 - Years later and this restaurant never disappoints. Service is excellent. The manager Trevor is very personable and great at his job. Restaurant runs smoothly, it's kept clean and presentable even when busy. All the staff are friendly and helpful. They go the extra mile to ensure the customer is happy and that allergies are taken care of. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal this evening. I didn't want the Rib Eye steak to end and that homemade Diane Sauce was incredible. Can't wait until next time. Thank you. August 2022 - Fantastic restaurant. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was clean and busy which is a good sign. My order did take a long time but I didnt mind waiting. My steak was undercooked and they happily took it back to cook longer. I got a free drink for the inconvenience and I was very happy with the service. The food was amazing, lovely and fresh and good portion size. I highly recommend

Mash that had clearly been warmed up in the microwave to runny mash, well over cooked broccoli & slowed cooked beef in red wine jus 🤷‍♀️ more like diced carrot & tomato , again I suggest warmed through in a microwave.very disappointing Starters expensive for quantity ( 4 calamari & 4 halloumi) & nothing special ! Waiting staff attentive & polite. Restaurant cold.

Lovely restaurant. Food was really tasty and good sized portions. When we asked for corriander to be removed from a special due to an allergy they had no problem at all even apologised when it was taking longer to cook. It wasn't a problem we were happy to wait. Desserts we're lovely, lemon meringue pie was very nice, nice to see it on a menu. Staff were attentive and very approachable.

This is a real hidden gem. We walked in here after a full day on Fistral Beach. This was the best sea food I had all holiday. The staff were really attentive and accommodating. Would definitely return and will be recommending to people in the future.

Price, performance and service - simply top! We had the SEAFOOD MARINIERE (everything cooked to perfection) and the 80oz steak with diane sauce, which tasted unbelievably good. We like to eat well and are accordingly critical of what we are served. However, in the whole week we were in Newquay, we didn't eat anywhere better than at Butchers. The unbelievably nice, unobtrusive and friendly service of all the waiters is also worth mentioning. (I would make a reservation) Thank you for a great evening

We arrived at Newquay later than expected in the evening. We loves seafood - took out the phone and googled seafood restaurant around where we stayed and found this restaurant. We did not have any booking, just walked in and asked. They were fully booked but they could take us an hour later. Food was great - my wife had Seafood Mariniere and I had trio of fish. Fish was perfectly cooked and services was good considering how busy they were. Price is very reasonable. Good food, good services and reasonable price - 5 stars!

Been there years ago with old owners and it was amazing. So off for a birthday treat. Unfortunately not now so good. We ordered the same steak for both of us one was good the other was bad. Tasted eggy and was tough. The beer was cloudy. We went for lunch the day after in a local pub and had much better quality food. Very disappointing. Not sure the random salad really went or complimented anything else on the plate. Not as bad as spoons but 4x the price.

I always make sure I pay a visit to Butchers Bistro when in Newquay. Food is amazing and always freshly prepared. The staff are really friendly and make sure you have everything you need. Varied menu and great selection of wines and the desserts are not to be missed!

Well located restaurant with very good service. We opted for asparagus soup with potatoes and the suggestion of the day was Ribeye with vegetables, tomatoes, mushrooms and French fries. The dishes were very tasty. Dessert was a salted caramel cheesecake with ice cream which was spectacular. Excellent option in Newquay. I recommend!

We’re a local and eat in many places. There are many locations around cornwall that have the advantage of a beautiful scenery, a good food. However the food served from start to end will blow you away, if taste is everything with the highest quality of food, cooked perfectly… you will not be disappointed. The standard and level of food is stunning. Kitchen is on show which is a plus, you feel like the chef’s are wanting you to be delighted with the food.. always better then a chef being hidden away… If you’ve never eaten here, Go for it, experience the food then have a walk on the cliff front afterwards and take in the stunning views of the sea, and watch a breathtaking sunset or the moon across the ocean… A perfect backdrop finish to Top food.

Really great restaurant that is just being itself. No fancy frills from a decor perspective but all clean and well laid out. The food and service is fantastic with some amazing local produce. This fish was brilliantly cooked and tasty. We have the local Camel Creek vineyard white wine which was excellent. There is a great kids menu so you can make this a family affair. The staff were so helpful and nothing was to much trouble. The pace of the course serving was just right, not rushed but not to slow either. We will be back again next year thanks.

This is a very good restaurant. It has a rather plain interior and an inconspicuous frontage on Cliff Street, Newquay. The food, however, is excellent. We had very good fresh fish and chicken with well-cooked vegetables. The wines and desserts were also first class. A gem in Newquay!

I came across this restaurant while googling places to eat seafood in Newquay. As it is a smaller restaurant, it is best to book. We booked about a week in advance for the bank holiday weekend. There was only the option to book up to 6 people online, so we had to call into book for 8. Luckily they had availability at 6pm as we said we would be out by 8pm. I think we finished at 7pm because we were starving from the activities from the morning. There was a variety of specials on the board next to the kitchen. One of our party members tried the lobster tagliatelle and it was so nice that we booked to come again the following night to have this dish. There is outdoor seating available, but as it was a wet day, we were given a seat inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food portions were good, we were so full that we popped down the beach for a walk. We tried the trio fish, the thing about this dish, I would have enjoyed it more if the fish was grilled and there was a sauce. The vegetables were a bit bland, so a sauce would have been nice. It was a very biiiiig portion! We also tried the fish chowder, this was very flavourful and it came in two sizes. Luckily we ordered the smaller size to share with my partner, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to finish it! We also loved the seafood mariniere, there was so much seafood that it could be shared with another person. The sauce it came with was good for dipping with bread. My 11 year old absolutely loved the seafood mariniere and lobster linguine! I would have loved to try some desserts, but we were just too full of seafood on both occasions! This was definitely a good find and if I can manage the 7 hour drive back to Cornwall, I would pop in for another visit!

During a recent trip to Cornwall, my husband, daughter, two best friends, and I had the pleasure of dining at Butchers Bistro, and it was an experience to remember! The line-caught fish of the day was the softest and most delicious fish I have ever tasted. Every single person at our table thoroughly enjoyed their meal, savoring each bite. The service was exceptional. Our two waitresses, who happened to be twins, were absolutely fantastic. Their attentiveness and cheerful demeanor added to the wonderful atmosphere of the evening. Additionally, a very friendly gentleman assisted in serving our table, making the experience even more delightful. A particularly special moment occurred when the staff overheard one of my friends mention it was my birthday. Without us asking, they played a birthday song over the speakers and surprised us by presenting one of our desserts with a candle. This thoughtful gesture made my birthday incredibly special and was a testament to their outstanding service. If we find ourselves back in Cornwall, we will definitely be returning to Butchers Bistro. It’s not just a place to eat, but a place to create beautiful memories with loved ones. Highly recommended!

We visited a year ago for our honeymoon and a year on we have come back for our 1st wedding anniversary. The owner instantly recognised us and was very welcoming. The food was absolutely amazing as usual, the staff were very pleasant and we were given a complimentary glass of champers to celebrate. We will be back next year. Highly recommend

We were here on a busy Saturday night, had to book an early table because it was a Bank Holiday weekend. Although it's called Butcher's Bistro, we all had fish for the main course, the hake being particularly memorable. Generous portions so we only had room to share desserts. Excellent service, total bill £176 including drinks and service.

Nice Clean place where you can see the kitchen. My Steak was A1, but should be at the price. My Wifes Hake was large and tasty according to her, the children had a Nice Burger and a really nice Spaghetti. The selectrion of beers was not great, but afyer trying a pint, I them went for a Peroni. We were all too full for Dessert. Staff were very good and attentive.

1st night of our few days away, we wanted a dog friendly restaurant to come to, which is 1 reason we chose here. Wasn't a busy evening for them but service was good. I chose the steak, which was very big and well cooked but served in a flat ish bowl and not a plate which made for cutting it a bit awkward. My husband had a prawn spaghetti dish, which was nice but very small, we also ordered the hake risotto, which was apparently lovely but served with a salad underneath it, we thought this was very unusual. My daughter just wanted chicken breast and chips, so we asked to remove the salad, mushrooms and tomato which they did but at £21 was very expensive even if she had had it all! And again this was served in a bowl. The 2 desserts ordered were nice. Nice meal and good service just a bit expensive for the size of meals.

Visited with high hopes. The staff were all very friendly and the quality was good but it really lacked any atmosphere. Most of the food was good, but the fish dish lad no flavour which included what felt like steamed veg again with no seasoning. The steak however was nice and the various starters also good.

Excellent food and wine, having experienced some poor seafood in the area we finally came across an excellent beef and seafood restaurant that was cooked beautifully. Service from staff was warming, attentive and informed and we had a lovely meal in a lovely ambiance. I cannot rate the food highly enough. Well done to the Butchers, we will be back.

Wow , absolutely amazing little place, the food was outstanding, the seafood platter was the best iv ever had, the wine was great, the staff were really friendly and we could also bring out little dog in too, thanks for having us, we really enjoyed it 😀

Outstanding In every way, from the friendly and professional service to the food and wine. Superb fish chowder, so tasty. Tender beef in wine sauce just melted. 5 star.

Unfortunately, this was not a pleasant food experience for me. It was a Wednesday night when we dined here. As a non fish eater, I had the roast beef dinner. The meat was dry vegetables cooked to a mush with a heavily granulated gravy. From where I was sat, I could see, and here the microwave in use. I definitely felt that the food I was served had been prepared on the previous Sunday and had been reheated on order. I have no complaints about the service, which was excellent and the restaurant itself was clean and presentable, but the quality of my food really was unacceptable. I haven't written about my partners food as I don't eat seafood, but she wasn't convinced that any of it was fresh.

I was there for my birthday and it was an excellent place to celebrate. The food was amazing, loving cooked by Emma and presented to us by the friendly and professional Debbie and Bernadette. Great value for money and incredible seafood. I would recommend this place for all those visiting Newquay.

Amazing food and service! Cannot recommended this restaurant enough. The waiter was so attentive and made us feel so welcome the whole time we were there and nothing ever seemed too much. The prawns were so fresh and yummy, the steak was cooked perfectly and was amazing quality. We shared the cheesecake special which was salted caramel and this was also fantastic. I would definitely return the next time I’m in Newquay.

Having eaten here before we decided to eat here again on New Year's eve, and we were not disappointed. The food (seafood and steak) was absolutely fabulous, the service was attentive and friendly, but we were not rushed. If you are looking for somewhere to go for a special meal then look no further.

Absolutely superb food. Everything was so fresh and piping hot. Delicious starters and they even accommodated a request to inc spaghetti in the main dish, seafood combo for me, and husband’s steak was melt in the mouth delicious. Extremely friendly staff, excellent service and the Chef should definitely apply for Masterchef Thank you so much, we will be back.
