Not been here for some time. Arrive and the car park was full and so was the pub, and it was a Monday. Both myself and my wife had the bacon chop for our main, and the pate for starters. In all honesty both lacked that fine dining sparkle i was expecting. The pate was plain in taste and the chop was average. The place was full so maybe i was a tad unfortunate.

Went to The Bull's Head on Boxing Day for a family dinner because we had been here before and found the food to be really good. As it was Boxing Day we paid a premium which was fine, but there was an issue with the meal. 2 of us ordered a pork and black pudding dish, but when it was served the black pudding was nowhere to be seen. I queried this with one of the staff, who informed me they had sold out. To not be told this at the time of ordering or at least at service I think was poor, as if I had known this I would have ordered a different meal. So amongst an otherwise good service, it was disappointing to have a key component of my dish missing.

Came here for breakfast with my younger daughter. We both had the Full English washed down with a teapot of English breakfast tea. The quality of each component of the breakfast was top notch. The service was perfect and there was a buzz around the place with the number of fellow diners. You should definitely pop in for a breakfast. Highly recommended by both me and my daughter. So it’s judging time by my two daughters and I for the best Full English Breakfast in the area. The Bulls Head Mottram is one of 12 finalists having made the grade following our previous visit. It should come as no surprise that today’s offering hit the mark yet again. The cooked breakfasts were marvellous. The sausage today was particularly tasty. This is the most expensive breakfasts so far in our journey but well worth it as the setting atmosphere and service were just right. Well done everybody.

There’s usually much to like about lunch at any of the dining pubs in the Brunning & Price chain. We’ve been to several over the years but the Bulls Head is the nearest to home and this is the third time we’ve been this year. One of the things I like is that, although this is a chain and company HQ must give some direction about the food, each individual chef has scope to develop their daily menu, taking account of seasonality and, often, local produce. So, for example, you’ll always find fish & chips on every menu but, here at the Bulls Head, you also find cheese & onion pie, using the local Appleby’s Cheshire where it might be a generic Cheddar in another county. And one look at the menu tells you this is early winter with Christmas approaching. There’s different game of course, turkey in the main courses, Stilton in a quiche and Christmas pudding, of course. Even pigs in blankets as a starter, with a mustard ketchup for dunking. Applebys Cheshire was also in croquettes, mixed with ham hock and served as a starter with Branston Pickle. Baked Camembert felt very retro – I don’t think I’ve eaten it for, literally decades. It’s deliciously oozy, with slices of toasted ciabatta to slather it over. And, alongside, an apricot chutney and a lovely little salad of finely sliced radish, ribbons of cucumber (or was it courgette) and candied walnuts. Pheasant worked really well as a seasonal spin for a burger – rich and gamey, balanced with pancetta, cheese and garlicky mayo. Good bun as well, holding its shape till the last mouthful. There’s fries, of course and a celeriac and mustard slaw. A lighter touch with a beef salad that’s often on the menu. It’s full of East Asian influences. A sweet & sour coating to the strips of beef, crisp like you’d get on a toffee apple. The salad is Chinese cabbage, red onion, red pepper, red chilli, coriander and cashew nuts. Both of these dishes were really good. We were thinking about just finishing with coffee but greed got the better of us but, as often, desserts may not have been worth the calories. Arctic slice was a modern take on the 80s classic frozen dessert. A sandwich made with two slices of a rather dry chocolate cake, “buttered” with orange marmalade, with vanilla ice cream as the filling. There’s a scattering of mandarin orange and a chocolate sauce. A waffle was served drenched in a warm red berry and cherry compote and topped with ice cream. It’s the better of the two – I’m going to nick that one to try at home with those bags of frozen red fruits from the supermarket. I think even I can pull that one off.

Beautiful place staff was reasonable though when I brought it to their attention how the food quality was awful. When you are paying over £22 for a Sunday dinner, you don’t expect it to come out over cooked at 12:30 on a Sunday and cabbage for veg. To be fair, feel a little bit mugged off.

Had a booking for 6pm for 4 people, upon arriving we were told there was no roast potatoes left and the only choice of roast meat was lamb, not impressed but we had travelled and were hungry. Once seated we were then informed there was no Sunday roasts left whatsoever! The only other dishes on the Sunday menu were fish & chips or cheese pie. A member of our party is allergic to fish and another member no dairy. Our argument was why not contact us in the first instance to let us know there was little to non food left! Shocking service.

After a long walk, myself and my husband stopped at the Bulls Head one Saturday afternoon for a coffee and a scone. The establishment was lovely and the scone was delicious, however our time at the pub was ruined by the constant sound of thuds and bangs coming from the ceiling. We enquired as to what was making such a racket, and the waitress declared with a sigh “it’s the managers children. It goes on all day, everyday”. She seemed just as perturbed as us. Unfortunately, we were unable to relax and enjoy the ambience. It has put us off wanting to come back.

Food was loverly but the service of one girl was a disgrace. She threw menus and threw food down on the table and it was as if she was trying to usher us out of the restaurant created an awkward atmosphere at our table. Her attitude was not applicable and her presence disturbed our table. Her attitude came across as if she wanted us to leave which was not tolerated and mentioned to the manager. She was rudely sarcastic to members of our table which was disrespectful and unneeded. We only had this one waiter for the end of the night but her efforts were poor and hoped they are addressed and mentioned. Other than that food was lovely and the other servers were amazing.

Can't fault the service. The reason for visiting was to eat and so I'm reviewing the place on the food. If the Yorkshire pudding hadn't been pre described I wouldn't know that it was one. It towered over the plate and looked and tasted as though it was made from polystyrene. It was very, very dry. The rest of the food looked as though it had been dumped on the plate, with very little gravy. Out in the car park I remembered that, when I been her before, through an open upstairs window at the back I saw a large pile of Yorkshire puddings. They obviously cook them en mass. I won't be going back.

The presentation and content of the menu led us to think we were in for some lovely food at this refurbished local pub. How wrong we were! The scallop starter had no flavour apart from the muddy taste from the pea puree and the fatty pancetta was not a taste I’d like to repeat anytime soon. The chicken and avocado main was dreary - huge slices of dry bread - hardly any avocado and minimal dressing - not good. I really wanted to love this place but clearly for us that’s not going to happen.

Sent it back, very apologetic and I decided instead to have the soup which was average. I am very surprised the chef sent that out as it was obvious it was overcooked burnt and possibly been cooked hours previously. My friend ordered the Chicken liver pâté, carrot and apricot chutney, toasted bloomer ( note no mention of mushroom on the menu) She called the waitress over as there was a suspicious looking slime on the salad to which we were told it was a mushroom. Unfortunately did not take a photo. No issue with the small pudding and hot drink.

Had an enjoyable lunch in this Tardis of a restaurant. Starters, mine rabbit and wild boar pasty was delicious and just the right size. My wife's lab was melt in the mouth tender and the veges were well cooked and different from the usual gastropub offerings. The menu is the same at lunch and the evening and perhaps a few smaller plates could be offered at lunch, not sandwiches. Nevertheless a really good place to go for a meal. Disappointing. This pub used to be really good but our visit yesterday was not very good. Our party of 11 had a lot of niggles that added up to a very average/poor experience, mainly due to slow service slow but also meal quality was not as good compared to their usual standard. Pate starters were bland and tasteless this time, nowhere as good as I've had before. The Christmas Dinner costs over £20 now and several of us found the turkey to be very dry. Comically we each had two cranberries dotted on the plate side, and a single sprout cut in half. There were other veggies of course, but my own green veg portion was cold. The portion size was fine and plenty of gravy but sadly cold plates meant a luke warm (definitely not piping hot) meal. Service was slow, and one person did not get their fish meal until other people had eaten half their main courses. I wanted to say something to the waitress but they did not check us...I later learned she checked a couple at the far end of the table but not everyone. They were understaffed and we had to order extra drinks at the bar ourselves, when usually we were frequently checked by staff if extra drinks are needed. The slowest service was for puddings, they took nearly 25 minutes and arrived well after the hot drinks that were supposed to come together. A staff member later said "it says hot drink and pudding on the menu, does not say they come together". I thought he was joking but he clearly seemed unbothered by the delay. Minor things were niggling too, the waitress adamantly would not bring condiments until after all the meals were served. I had nearly finished my turkey when the cranberry sauce arrived. The puddings were the best part, the waffle mini pudding excellent. But my friend ordered the trifle and it was actually more like a chocolate mousse. We later were told only one member of staff made puddings hence the long delay. The total bill was £380 for 11 of us. Quite expensive given most of us had only two courses and drinks. In summary...used to be a good pub but standards have slipped.

We’d booked for lunch which was just as well as it seemed very busy with several groups of “ladies who lunch”. As always, there was good service and a menu packed with dishes you could fancy ordering. They modify the menu regularly which accounts for the fact that, whilst I’d spotted a lovely partridge main course when I looked online just after breakfast, it had disappeared when they updated the menu just before midday. There was a roast chestnut risotto, as a starter, which was nice enough in itself but would have been even better if you could actually detect any pieces of chestnut in it. The overall flavour was enhanced with a scattering of lightly pickled shemeji mushrooms and a few crisped sage leaves. That was followed by a “proper” suet shortcrust pie – crisp pastry top, bottom and side – filled with long cooked venison, bacon, mushroom and baby cocktail onions. It came with colcannon and mixed greens. Just the sort of lunch that works on a chilly autumn day. Spiced carrot soup was everything you want from a bowl of soup. Warming, flavoursome with the sweetness of carrot and a little background spice from cumin and coriander. Lovely sourdough roll and butter alongside. The main course came from the Light Bites section. A steak sandwich – alleged to be fillet but so chewy in parts that fillet it wasn’t. But most was edible and those bits were nice enough. It wasn’t a plate to send back but it was a plate to comment on when we were asked how everything had been. There’s a tarragon and Dijon mayo, a little salad, sun blush tomatoes and a few fries.

Superb village local run by experts. Impressive row of hand pumps with local cask beers, friendly staff, great food, stone floors, low beams and sometimes candle lit, it is a firm favourite. Good Beer Guide 2025.

The Rose & Crown is a December tradition for us, and it never disappoints. There’s such a magical atmosphere; charming, cosy, and perfect for the run-up to Christmas. The food is always fantastic, and the Brie and bacon burger yesterday was absolutely stunning. A firm favourite!

Friendly pub with a good selection of ales and drinks. Darts board in the back which was popular. Definitely worth a visit!
