Quiet on a Monday evening but good food and friendly service

The staff were lovely but not so the Carvery. I'm usually someone who would say something at the time but it was edible and we were hungry. It was just all really overcooked, rock hard roasties, mushy sprouts, slightly burned Yorkies and gravy in a plastic bag in a container. The meat was a bit tough too. Overall not great.

Was supposed to be carvery but beef was floating in a tray of water along with the gammon. Veges were cold. The Yorkshire pudding however was good. The place was very cold. A fire had just been lit at 1.00 pm. Should of been lit at 10.00 am to warm the place.

Booked for Christmas lunch and specifically asked when booking if it would be served to the table rather than carvery. I was assured it would be served to the table, however it was serve yourself carvery. The starters and puddings were fine, however the carvery was absolutely awful, the worst I've ever had. The meat was pre sliced and due to it being kept warm under a heat lamp, it was dry as a bone. I can only describe the veg as disgusting, all of it was so overcooked it was grey in colour, sat in a pool of water and very sloppy. The metal veg trays were lined with plastic bags, something I've never seen before,no wonder the veg was sweating! When asked if we wanted roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding, these were produced from somewhere under the counter, I can only guess they were in a bucket? Had wanted to try this pub for a while, but will definitely not be returning. Very disappointed.

Great food at competitive price

Absolutely beautiful food and the warmest of welcomes from both staff and punters. Staying at the blue dolphin and called in here in our way back from a day trip. Every meal ordered was devoured and delicious ( 9 of us ) Will definitely be going back .

Fantastic food .the only thing we was asked to say what food we wanted 2 days before whitch is no good as you mite not fancy that dish on the day.never been asked to do this before and I've been to loads of pubs .thought it was strange. But would go back in future as food was very good

1 horrible bar staff felt if I was not welcome when I walked in. The older bar lady needs more training how to pour a bit of Gunness shocking of a pint. 2 Sunday Roast dinner fabulous really enjoyed it. 3 pub decor very nice and clean maybe toliet needs a refreshing with some paint. We have been here a few times before for lunch and the food was really good, but after trying the Sunday Lunch we were all very disappointed. The meat was good in general. Ham , chicken or beef. We were only allowed one roast potato each, but the vegetables were the worst I have ever had in a restaurant. They were standing in warm water. I couldn't get any cabbage as l needed a strainer. The carrot were so soggy they fell into pieces on touching the plate. The green beans and sprouts tasted like they had been cooked for hours, and were still cooking in the water. Non of the vegetables had been drained, consequently they were exceptionally wet and overcooked. Very poor.

after viewing the bull on line and reading the menu, we were really looking forward to eating at the bull. on arrival, thursday 25/9/24 we went to the bar, the bar man asked what we were there for, my wife replied to eat and have a couple of drinks. the barman then asked asked if we had booked, she replied we had not, it does not advise you to do so on the website, he then replied we are very busy you know. my wife then asked if there were any tables free, he replied after tutting numerous times that hed have a look. after a few minutes he pointed and said sit there. we went over to the table we thought hed pointed at and sat down, he then charged over and shouted i said sit there pointing to the table next to where we were sat. the meal was superb and so was the beer, but this did not compensate for the rudeness of the barman, who whilst there we learned was the landlords son. the other staff serving we very good and cheerful. my advise to the landlord, LOSE YOUR SON MATE HE IS COSTING YOU CUSTOM AND MONEY.

Stunning quality food and a very cheap price.

Nice pub, friendly and helpful staff but unfortunately when the meal came after about 40 minutes wait despite booking a table it was mostly cold, ate a few chips first which were lovely and hot but by the time I tried the ribs they were cold, shame really because they were really nice, tasty and well cooked, on to hubby's meal he was so disappointedby the steak pie he'd been looking forward to all day, all topping and hardly any meat and the proper gravy was watery, tasteless and a meagre portion for anyone who likes a good yorkshire boat of gravy , so all in in all for our experience not good but read lots of good reviews so maybe a bad day fir them but the meat pie and gravy were really disappointing

Food is fantastic and portions are ample

We had dinner here on Sunday evening. Usual pub grub menu. When we ordered, 2 of the options we had chosen were unavailable, we were not informed of this in advance. No specials board and only 2 other sets of diners. The atmosphere was flat. When the food came it was OK, however, the vegetables were cold. I felt it was quantity over quality. I doubt we will visit again.

What an amazing place, the food is amazing and plenty of it, I strongly recommend this place if your in the area, you will not be disappointed, don’t eat much before you go, the portions are very big 😋😋😋😋😋

Been in twice in last 10 days whilst on holiday. Friendly, welcoming staff, food absolutely lovely, piping hot, freshly cooked and large portions, good prices. Very dog friendly. Will definitely be returning when next in the area.

Ate lunch here. It’s a historic pub with a central bar. The staff were friendly. They have a large food menu and a good selection of drinks. The portions are huge and we thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate. Highly recommend eating here.

Excellent food and a lovely, friendly atmosphere, big plus dogs are welcome. We will definitely return before we leave, and we would recommend it to anyone.

Home cooked food was delicious.

We have been to the Bull quite a few times now and have always enjoyed the food, we have tried a few different dishes, fish and chips are very good, pie is also really good but takes some eating as the portion's sizes are huge! Price wise its excellent value for money Id advise booking to avoid disappointment as its busy on occasions.

Absolutely hands down the best Sunday dinner I've ever had outside of home, and actually better than most of my own. Very clean attractive pub, lots of seating in and out, great range of carvery meats and veg and a really fair price too.

We last visited this pub some time ago before the unfortunate fire. We had booked beforehand and on arrival were met with the abrupt barman who just said have you booked & we said yes. He then wagged his finger to a table at the far end to indicate this was our table. On previous visits we were waited upon for both our drinks & meals but it seems things have changed. Having realised this was no longer the case we ordered both our drinks & meals at the bar. We then noticed at least 10 people coming into the pub on 3 separate occasions to be met with the same barman & on confirming they hadn’t booked were told abruptly again that no tables were available until much later. Maybe there were no tables available but there’s a way of speaking to people & indeed the last couple who were turned away slammed the door very loudly as they left, obviously upset with the barman’s manner. This guy seriously needs to be shown how to politely speak to people as he has zero customer service skills & I’m sure the pub’s future will be in jeopardy if he continues being in charge. Now to the food; we ordered steak pie which was very very good. The mash was home made & the vegetables were well cooked how I like them (I don’t understand why some people insist on barely cooked raw vegetables). Perhaps the gravy was a little lacking but at these prices I would recommend ordering extra gravy if you’re a Yorkshireman like me. So yes, the food was excellent but the cold unfriendly atmosphere caused by said barman means I would hesitate going again. There are many decent pubs in the area all with a warm & friendly staff.

Just stopped in for a quick refresher on the way back to Scarborough. Beautiful old pub and a lovely pint of cider. The lady who served us though appeared a bit miserable and not wanting our custom. Her (assume) daughter was nice enough. I want all pubs to survive, but customer service and warmth helps give a good impression. But please visit and make your own opinion.

sadly, we won't be back ... I would have left being £21 overcharged if it wasn't for my husband questioning the bill at the bar..... no apology only... "if it's not cashed out, last table charge carries " ?? food was okay, waited nearly an hr though... lovely atmosphere.. staff very polite, I think the issue of maybe charging as they order will solve the over charging ...

We went for a meal with friends while on holiday and what can I say it was bloody beautiful just a bit of advice don't eat all day before U go as the portions are huge and would highly recommend the bull to anyone

Amazing hidden gem of a pub! The staff were all friendly and informative. The food portions were absolutely huge not to mention very tasty! Definitely great value for money. It does get busy so I’d advise to book, luckily they did manage to squeeze us in without a booking!

Struggled to get through to book a table All day turned up and staff managed to squeeze us in . Very friendly old village pub with great food and huge portions. Very reasonable pricing , dog friendly which is always a plus after a day at the beach. Children’s meals were also massive , 1 would do 2 small children. Steak & ale pie was delicious, fried halloumi was a big hit with the wife . 4 meals with drinks for £45 you can’t go wrong .

Thanks for the lovely drinks and friendly staff great pint of carling. Shame about the neighbour over the road complaining about the fridge running on the ice cream truck. We work hard we play hard …..unfortunately there is always one sad neighbour in every village. See you all soon !

First time here and won’t be the last. We came based on a recommendation and we certainly weren’t disappointed! Excellent service and homemade food with very reasonable prices.

Good honest pub grub that is very reasonable priced. Portion sizes were massive. Made to feel very welcome during our two visits. When most mains are around the £10 mark, it offers great value for money.

Visiting friend in Filey for 3 days. Found this gem! hime cooked Sunday lunch first day 😋 then homemade steak and ale pie 😋 then scampi 😋. Yes we went 3 days on the trot because the food was brilliant. Dog friendly too inside aswell as out. Cannot fault, highly recommend the food the service and the welcome

Stopped on the way back from Whitby. Wow ! I had the rump steak and my partner had a burger, the price was fantastic, huge portion size and meat quality was fantastic. If we didn't live in Nottingham this would be out new favourite spot. Thanks again. Hight recommend

Visited while staying at the local caravan park. Good selection of reasonably priced food. When you see a place so busy on a Wednesday, you know it must be decent.

Visited The Bull this evening around 5pm. Enquired about a table for two diners. Extremely rude young man behind the counter was abrupt, and totally lacking in good customer service skills. Politeness costs nothing. We were told nothing available, which is totally fine, as we hadn’t booked. Tables were reserved for 7pm and 6.45 …surely discretion could have been used. We could have been offered the option to dine but vacate before the reserved tables were required! Only a suggestion, but regardless the dismissive attitude was not warranted .

Stopped to watch Euro's football match and have a drink, service was absolutely fine. The pub itself wasn't very busy, although bingo was in full swing. Unfortunately for us we couldn't hear the football as the volume was turned down for those playing bingo.

If you like good quality beers then this is the pub for you! Food is good and you will not believe the size of the portions. Service can be a bit slow when busy, huge car park.

Food very expensive not good food

Walked from Cayton to the Bull for the second time this month for a family meal, Gristhorpe is a nice village and the pub has a very traditional feel. We had Fish and Chips which were excellent as I always have low expectations for pub fish and chips. Family had chili and carbonara which they couldn't finish due to the large portions, would definitely recomend. The only change Id make is the food service hours, serve later than 2 oclock in the afternoons and extend sunday lunch while 4 oclock.

We must give this lovely pub 5 xx all-round excellent food couldn't fault it service brilliant as was the atmosphere the meal we had was steak and ale pie it just melted in your mouth we were able to take our little dog in which was brilliant we shall be going again when we are on holiday there its a must

Let me start with our welcome as we entered the pub, the guy working the bar was such a nice bloke who delt with us promptly and professionally, he took our drinks order and showed us to our table (that I had booked at short notice) once we had decided what we wanted I went and ordered our meals, the poor chap working appeared to be on his own and was coping admirably. So to the food, well what can i say, that was possibly the best cooked steak that I have ever had, the onion rings well I have never seen onion rings that big and that batter well it was superb and so cripsy, full credit to the chef and staff of this pub and I would recommend this place everyone (just book in advance people).

Despite positive feedback, the food was not sampled. The atmosphere was lively due to a live band performance. The quality of the drinks was satisfactory, and the prices were within expectations. The establishment is charming but rather small. The service was exceptional, contributing to an enjoyable evening.

A wonderful atmospheric seventeenth century inn. The food is freshly prepared to order, presented well and absolutely delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this lovely inn.

Visited 22 .5 24 New owners since last visit. No one can fault the location / garden / surroundings / the original old bar and the cosy pub . Food ; starters - all enjoyed . 3 people - 2 had nachos I ordered Brie - not available , switched to garlic bread ...decent , as nice as good supermarket garlic slices . Then it got good .... 2 steaks . 1 gammon . 1 Rump , 1 Sirloin - excelllent . So tender , rested , juicy steaks ...very good pepper sauce , very good "proper" tasty chips , fresh salad , good peas , and seriously fabulous onion rings - they should have them as a starter , on the main and with a dip as an appetiser - fantastic !!! The meal for 3.... All less than £20 a head (, plus wine - decent ) Service very pleasant . They should be proud of what they offer !

We spotted the sign to this put when driving to Scarborough. On the way back we thought we would try this as it was dog friendly. The food was absolutely amazing and plentiful. Very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

Went fir supper after reading the reviews on trip advisor, and it stood upto its excellent reviews, The pub had a great big car park , and a very attractive front, . A cosy public bar, and dinning room, . Plenty of choice on the menu,at very reasonably prices. The food was hot and tasty and of hood quality, and on leaving we were discussing when to plan a return visit

Had lovely carvery at the bull Inn on Easter sunday

My Husband and I have visited a couple of times recently as it's not far from us, the food is spot on! The prices for what you get are great. We keep ordering the same thing because we enjoy it so much, barbacue spare ribs ( loads of meat on them which just falls off the bone) and the pie, delicious! Gorgeous little pub, lovely beer garden, huge car park and the staff are brilliant! Most likely going back tonight 😁

Unfortunately haven't had a good experience. Ordered two meals. When received one of which wasn't even what we ordered and the other tasted so bad I couldn't finish it at all. For the prices you pay you'd hope for good quality food but unfortunately just tasted microwaved. When we complained nothing was said other then it'll be better next time. There will be no next time I'm afraid.

I came here with my husband and daughter for Mother’s Day and the carvery was absolutely delicious, plenty of meat on our plates and a good selection of vegetables, lovely Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes were done properly not just dumped in a deep fat fryer like some places do. We live local so will definitely be returning very soon

So with a new management team in place I thought I’d hold fire and visit a few times before leaving an honest review. I’ve now eaten there 5 times. From my family of 3, to an extended family table of 6 and finally a large group of 11 of us, I can honestly say this place is outstanding. The fish and chips are absolutely gorgeous, as are the steak pie, curry and Sunday dinner. I genuinely can’t find fault. The food is delicious, piping hot, and clearly homemade - and the portions are very (very) generous. From a culinary point of view, The Bull is probably the best foodie pub in the region - it’s genuinely that good. Oh and they even do fish and chips to take away - that’s Fridays sorted! As for the bar, it’s retained its gorgeous old-world charm, and what’s more, it blends the drinking side of the pub and the eating side really really well. It feels warm, welcoming and has a pool table and darts board to boot. Beers are priced relatively low and they stock some really good beers like Moretti. Staff are lovely. Really personable, really attentive and are clearly passionate about making peoples experience in the pub positive. It is very very clear that the team are all bought into making this the most popular pub around come summertime. The facilities are great - a huge carpark, a huge beer garden, disabled access and they even offer overnight stopovers for campervans. It really is hard to find fault. Even the locals are polite and lovely!!! We will definitely be back (and probably on a more regular basis that I should!!!). This is the #1 country pub for miles and miles. Absolutely worth a visit.

Sunday roast. Service slow, food portions good but bland and lukewarm. Atmosphere not helped by pub being cold.

Arrived on a wet and windy evening, midweek. Very few people in and we thought this cannot be a good sign - how wrong we were. Lovely fire. Service was friendly and efficient. We ordered fish chips and peas, and chilli. The fish was fantastic, with crisp light batter and the fish was white and flakey and tasted squeaky fresh. Chips were crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, some of the best ever. MY OH's chilli was tasty. The meals were fantastic value. We will be back.

My husband and I went for an evening meal. The pub itself is a lovely, traditional country pub. We were made very welcome, the staff were very attentive and helpful. My husband ordered fish, chips and mushy peas and I ordered a rump steak. This came with grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, coleslaw, salad, chips and onion rings that were to die for! It was all fresh, piping hot and delicious. The portions were so generous that we didn't manage to finish our meals. We definitely recommend eating here. It will be lovely in the summer too in the beer garden. We will be back again for sure!

Changed hands!!! Called in after a nice beach walk as always eat here. However, it was empty and not surprisingly. New owners, ordered fish and chips and was shocked that the fish was a cut off end. Even worse it was not cooked properly, soggy batter and soggy chips, not edible ! New landlord didn’t charge us and said They were taking over the kitchen soon. Such a shame as always had fantastic food in the past.
