Fantastic waterside gastropub nestled in the charming village of Hamble. Extremely good menu and can great wine list - but not exorbitantly expensive in terms of value. Very friendly service capped a memorable Sunday lunch.

Quite disappointed this evening. We regularly stay in Hamble and eat in The Bugle but tonight the manager was a let down. My fish was cold in the middle so I sent it back, the waitress was apologetic and I got a replacement 10 mins later although by that time my wife had all but finished her meal. I would have expected the manager who was standing at the bar to talk to me and ensure I was happy and also offer a reduction as I basically ate alone while my wife just sat there. He did not approach me until the bill was due and made no effort to address my food issue. I removed the tip to knock £8.50 off my bill, close to 50% of the cost of the fish & chips which was a shame as the waitress was good. Maybe he needs to learn a little more about customer care. Having eaten in the King & Queen also this week I will probably use this pub as first choice in future. The one positive was my wife’s food was nice.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Bugle, and it exceeded all expectations! This isn't just a place to eat—it's a destination. I’d go out of my way to return, I can say with confidence that it's absolutely worth the trip. The atmosphere at The Bugle is charming, blending cosy, rustic decor with an inviting and friendly ambiance. The staff went above and beyond to make me feel at home, with impeccable service that made my meal a real treat. Every dish I've tried (second vist) was thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavour. The ingredients tasted fresh and locally sourced, and each plate looked as beautiful as it tasted. Worth going out of your way for. I'll be back.

We moored up in the Hamble overnight and decided to eat in the Bugle. This pub is fairly big and has a nice atmosphere. There were plenty of choices on the menu. The padron peppers weren't the best, but the chicken strip starter was fabulous. We had the Bugle burger and the moules for our mains, and the burger was the standout dish. The moules were cooked really well and were plump and juicy. The sauce was ok but lacked depth, with plenty of cream but only a hint of white wine, garlic, and shallots. The biggest issue with this plate was actually the price at over £1 per mussel (£16 for 15). This could have been justified had this been a truly wonderful dish, but the sauce was rather average. On the other hand, the panacotta was absolutely delicious, and the cheese board was exceptional, with a really good selection, including some cheeses that I'd never tried before. Overall, this was a worthwhile visit, but I would avoid the overpriced moules next time.

I ordered the Burrata which the menu stated came with Isle Of Wight tomatoes (which are a particular favourite of mine). Plate arrives, not one tomato in sight! I spoke to the waitress who went to the kitchen and returned with a couple of red tomatoes which had been cut into quarters and put in a bowl (definitely NOT Isle Of Wight tomatoes)! The kitchen’s excuse “we haven’t made one in a while..’ !!! So it’s safe to say, they don’t even know their own menu - doesn’t inspire confidence…

Overall.... Disappointed. I so wanted a Sunday lunch to be one to remember for the right reasons, unfortunately not. The service was good, however the roast beef was £22 and dominated by vegetables with an ridiculously oversized slice of swede, three potatoes and a huge Yorkshire pudding... Which was clearly designed to hide the three small pieces of very thinly sliced beef! Another surprise came in the price of a pint at £7.50, this is Hamble not Mayfair! So all in all, two mains & three pints = £73.00. I'll leave it to you to decide if this is acceptable to you.

The John Dory fish was very small, barely a child’s portion really and the dessert was half the usual portion size. The drinks were expensive and there was a service charge of over £9 ! We had every intention of having one drink and moving on as there are a few pubs within the same area to explore! But we ended up staying the rest of the evening there due to the excellent service and warm welcome by the staff, especially by a man named Norbert. It was very busy when we arrived but they made space for us at the bar, we got chatting to a few locals, time flew by and the next thing we know were nearly the last ones left. At this point we had a very nice conversation with Norbert and you could tell how passionate and enthusiastic he was about his job and how much of an expert he was in his craft. Enjoyed lunch on the terrace. different things on the menu to the usual offerings in similar gastro pubs. I made the wrong choice with the hot dog - I'd have preferred a less fussy version with the additions (sauerkraut, onions, etc.) on the side instead of within the bun and not to have the drizzle zig zag. I should have opted for the seafood linguine. The tempura prawns (shared) and my wife's scallops were excellent, and the chocolate brownie, very good if a trifle expensive. Overall, a good leisurely experience. My only adverse comment was the 'discretionary Service charge' added to the bill, just as that and no a mention that this was calculated at the level of 12.5%. I think this % should be highlighted on the bill itself.

Fish and chips were excellent, my Big Tasty flatbread was lacking in flavor ... there was no Big Tasty sauce the bbq brisket was dry and there was a smear of butternut squash puree on the flatbread which did nothing for the dish and I think a drizzle of harissa mayo. Most of the flavour came from the gherkins scattered on it. I love flatbread but was disappointed. I have to add that I did not complain as this is just my personal critism and taste. Staff were very friendly but at £7.50 a pint of Estrella and £6 for cider plus a service charge don't think we will rush back.

I have mixed feelings about our visit, albeit we did visit on a Tuesday evening so my review may not be reflective of a typical day at The Bugle. Firstly, the food was great - I had the fish and chips and they made such a simple and traditional dish so very tasty and it even came with a homemade curry sauce which was great. According to the rest of our party, their food was great too and it definitely looked the business. Despite this I did find the menu to be hugely limited with only about 6 things to choose from which was disappointing and they lacked vegetarian options which was a shame given one of the party doesn’t eat meat. Furthermore, it is not cheap. Yes, the portions are big and yes it is all freshly cooked but if you’re branding yourself as a pub then I would expect more family friendly prices. Lastly, there was little to no atmosphere. We were the only people in there eating and there was only two others who were just having a drink. Due to this we felt a bit rushed in and out because they were obviously wanting to close given the lack of customers other than ourselves. I’ve worked in hospitality so I can understand the feeling of wanting to go home and hoping that the last table will hurry up and leave but it did make us feel a bit awkward as we were in no hurry ourselves (and, it was only 8pm). As I said, mixed feelings. Overall: great and innovative food, cosy setting - downside would be prices, lack of atmosphere and limited menu. Would return again but probably on the weekend where I can expect a better sort of atmosphere.

A pie to me is something with a pastry top, not a shank in a pie dish with a bit half an inch of mash on it. After my colleague asked if the meal came with sides or had to be ordered extra was told it had to be ordered as an extra . Extras were ordered only to find small portions of BOTH of the extras were actually included in the dish in the first place. I also do not like the trend in some places to add a service charge and then be told it can be removed if you want it to be, hoping to embarrass the customer into saying it can stay on the tab. The meal apart from the above complaints was enjoyable.

We heard there was a new chef which was the main reason we went. We didn’t leave a little disappointed though unfortunately, mainly due to the very small portion sizes and there being no vegetables or sides at all with some meals despite the meal being £15-£18 each. One of us got the Hunters chicken which did not come with any sides and only had 5 small bits of chicken, for around £15 you would expect more than chicken and sauce. Pie of the day was really good but the size of the pie was tiny and hardly had any filling which was disappointing, also a small amount of mash potatoes and no vegetables… Desert was very good, actually got decent portions with that so that was a highlight. Overall it was good was overly expensive at £171 for 4 small portions and desert.

Bugle is a great place for a quiet drink or a nice meal. Food is well presented and tasty. Atmosphere is relaxing. Service is outstanding from the management team of Norbert, Alexa and Amy together with all the staff, front of house and kitchen. Our ‘go to’ pub in Hamble.

I’m very happy to report that the Bugle is better than ever under its new manager, Norbert and new chef. We have always enjoyed having a drink there, but had had a couple of disappointing meals there in recent years. So it’s great news that it’s now back at the top of its game. Our party enjoyed fish and chips (“the best pub fish and chips I’ve ever had”) a Bugle burger (“excellent”) and a series of small plates/starters - scallops & black pudding, spicy fried chicken, braised brisket, chargrilled hispi cabbage and onion bhaji, all were beautifully seasoned and perfectly cooked. Highly recommended.

As I have been a regular guest of the montagu arms hotel when I heard Norbert was taking over the Bugle and one of their chefs also managing the kitchen, I did not hesitate to book my family new years eve celebration there. Very reasonable price, really attentive service and delicious food. I have seen two 1 star rating and completely unreasonable comment here, so I decided to tell the truth. The evening went very smooth, the service was organised and well timed without being rushed. The dishes were well portioned and presented with a lots of love. Please understand this is a gastro pub not a club or a fine dining restaurant and on that level they did not fail. They delivered everything what they promised and we had a good dance and celebration at midnight. Will definitely recommend and keep visiting the Bugle as a new favourite in Hamble. Thank you for the staff and the management for the fantastic night! Lots of love!

Lovely food set in a fantastic location - The staff were friendly and efficient and made a real effort with a special dietary request for somebody in my group.

Thank you Alexa and Norbert, we really had a wonderful evening sitting at the bar for dinner earlier this month. The food was absolutely perfect and so was the hospitality that you two brought to our evening. We only meant to pop out for a quick bite, but stayed much longer for a 3 course meal because of how much fun we were having chatting with you both! Clearly other patrons that evening felt same!

Just delicious, local, well cooked food. The menu lists on the back a map of where (and the company names) they get everything from- including meats and potatoes etc. Had a burger and my god- the Patty was unreal, homemade. The brioche bread and salad- so fresh!! And with so much flavour. Even the fries had exceptional taste. The atmosphere in here is lovely. Cosy for winter - all wooden and fireplaces burning. Lovely. Service friendly, fast and great. Knocked down one point as the dessert (sticky toffee pudding) tasted almost vegan. Artificial or odd tasting (like sweetener) the ice cream a bit over and not as tasty. Also the food is a little pricey, a bit more Gastropub level prices. Would recommend for families, couples, friends. A good all rounder

We're local residents of Hamble and been frequenting the Bugle for a few years so, attracted by their marketing of their New Year's Eve party as a "New Year's Eve Spectacular", an "unforgettable celebration", a "sparkling send off" for Yannick, the outgoing manager. We were promised a "sumptuous feast", "tunes that’ll move your feet, and laughter that’ll make the night complete". In reality, the night was a disaster. There was little atmosphere, friends at the next table had a stand up row with the manager over the poor food quality. There was no "spectacular celebration", and the only laughter was when we couldn't believe our bill. £800 for a table of 6. I raised a complaint but the MD was very defensive, claimed other customers had no complaints (we know this not to be true). I was even asked to suggest my own compensation for our poor experience. After spending literally thousands of pounds in the Bugle over the last few years, their NYE party failed to deliver in a big way. Plenty of choice in Hamble, we've struck the Bugle off our list until the time we see "under new management" on the door.

It's a busy pub on a Friday full of trades people drinking and hopping too win the meat draw! Good selection of beers and Sky Sports on telly all the time... Not the sort of place I would take my family but ok with mates after a long hard week.

I’m only writing this because of one guy. I was on a Sunday service rail replacement which is always awful. One man though was loud and clear in his description. He was funny and genuinely made my trip which means something on some random Sunday ‘train’ journey that lasts nearly 4 hours. I dont know who you are but I hope you see this and know that you made at least one commuters Sunday.
