The Brown Room in Scarborough

Been going here years and I mean years .Just a nice place to sit in and eat fish and chips. Staff friendly. Only one thing I don't like skin on my fish and I did get a couple of bones .

Top notch fish and chips in a lovely traditional cafe. Succulent fish in crispy batter, beautifully cooked in beef dripping (had to laugh at another reviewer who was horrified by this!). Delicious chips and served with a pot of tea and bread & butter as it should be. Staff are very friendly and attentive, definitely recommend!

Having enjoyed fish and chips from The Brown Room takeaway on previous visits to Filey, we decided to eat in tonight and we're very glad we did! Great sized portions of beautifully cooked crispy battered haddock and tasty chips, with the full pot of tea and bread & butter treatment we still like to see in a proper fish & chip restaurant. Big thanks to the amazing owners/staff, only tip would be to adjust your opening hours on Google as we found you were closed on Sunday when it said you would be open - Worth the wait though!

Called in for lunch, we have to say they were the nicest Fish and Chips we’ve had in years. I had Cod it was so fresh and flakey. My wife had Haddock and is was also very very nice. The Brown Room is a regular spot from now on. The staff also are a credit to business

Brilliant curry sauce, lovely fresh fish

Had a beautiful meal, sweet white flakes of cod in a crisp delicious batter with crisp but fluffy chips cooked perfectly! Service was great too, Denice going above & beyond to ensure everything was nice. Great all round experience. Delicious food, by far the best Fish & Chip eatery in Filey!!

We fancied lunch from a chippy but wanted to eat outside or in the car as our dogs were with us. The food was cooked fresh and nice and hot. We drove to a nice spot and parked up. I had asked my hubby to get me fish and peas with lots of salt and vinegar. The food was faultless but what was difficult was the fish was wrapped in paper with a pot of peas inside and salt and vinegar even though put on could not be tasted. Surely fish and peas on a takeaway should be served on a tray. The peas were in a pot that barely provided a spoonful. When serving such good food why is an establishment scrimping on the cheapest items, peas, salt and vinegar and trays! And I also burnt my leg at one point when opening the food. This wouldn't have happened had it been served on a tray, and trays can be recyclable or kind to the environment.

We always go here when in Filey. Went here yesterday afternoon (28th September). My partner stood outside with my Daschund. I was served by a v friendly,helpful lady,she had short greying hair and Tattoos. She took my order and everything was done how we like it. This lady acknowledged my dog and kept smiling at her. My dog is my world 🌎 and this was v much appreciated. Because my dog is so small a lot of people ignore her or don't see her! We had fish,chips and peas,all cooked to perfection with excellent staff. This is why we never go anywhere else when in Filey. See you next year.

As usual, really good fish and chips cooked fresh to order. My only complaint is the ridiculous cost for a small tub of mushy peas £1.60! Simply greedy profiteering on such a cheap ingredient

We came here whilst out for the day in Filey. Ordered F+C twice. When they came, the chips were strangely brown on the edges. Really not to my taste, but my wastebin husband ate them. There was something I couldn't put my finger on, so I came on & read other reviews. To my actual horror, they still use dripping 🤢 I wasn't sure this was even still legal!! I really feel they should advertise this on their menu, so people know to avoid it. It's 2024, this kind of thing should be relegated to the 1940's?!!

First time we have had fish & chips here as we usualy use Inghams and sometimes CJs. Last year we were a bit disappointed with Inghams. However, the fish & chips at the Brown Room were lovely. Generous portions and freshly cooked. Worth the short walk from the sea front.

Quality sit down fish and chip meal . Nice touch to have ketchup and tartar sauce on the table . Curry sauce also excellent 👌

Oh my goodness, stunning fish and chips with friendly and kind service. An absolutely fantastic place, wonderful batter and mushy peas as well.

The fish and chips here are excellent, and don't get me started on the gravy, just give me a spoon and a bowl full and I'd be happy 😋. All the staff we met were lovely. This place is that good we came back for a second time. Shame we have to wait till next year to return 😪

Callee in here today with the family for food. Hot freshly cooked fish and chips. Nice service from the friendly staff. Excellent doesn't do this place justice. Delicious. It was that good we went twice.

Literally the best fish and chips I've had in a long time!!! Fish was thick and delicious. The batter was amazing and crunchy. Mushy peas were good. Service was fast and very friendly. Shame we're on holiday!!! If you're in Filey ...go!!!! 2nd visit. Still bloody amazing again!!!!!!!

Visited after a nice day at the beach. Really nice fish & chips. The staff could definitely have been a little friendlier which is why I have scored 4 and not 5. We had take out so review is based on that, but you can sit and eat in too. Fairly priced as the portions are good. Clean & tidy and seems to be popular so definitely worth a visit.

Went in january and couldnt be helpful enough when they were just about to close. Went back last sunday( they close at 5.45.) And again best in Filey. Haddock was massssive and perfect. Best chippy i've been to in the 65 yrs i've been around. Unfortunatly 150 miles away but hey ho. I'll be back.

We had some friends visiting from Germany and they wanted some "proper fish and chips" and they weren't disappointed (neither were we) . Nice fresh haddock , batter was crispy , chips were just right . All served with quickly with a smile .

As we walked in, we were greeted by happy smiling staff, saying hello. We chose our table, decided what we wanted and a few minutes later a lady came and took our orders. Our drinks were brought swiftly along with our cutlery and a large bowl of mushy peas. A few minutes later our food arrived. We ordered cod and chips each, and the portions were very generous. In fact, we both got 2 fish each and a generous portion of freshly cooked chips. There was a generous selection of Tartar sauce, tomato sauce, salt and vinegar. None of those silly individual sachets. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted very nice. I would recommend The Brown Room without hesitation, and we will be calling in again!

We have been going to Brown’s regularly for over 50 years but on recent visits the standard has slipped. Jason does not appear to be cooking and he was superb. Went yesterday and had an over cooked scrappy bit of fish and a few chips. Have you changed your fish supplier? Need to teach the young uns how to cook…

Excellent haddock and chips served with a smile from the staff. Chips cooked in beef dripping, as they should be. Nice strong tea to wash it down with. Looking forward to my next holiday in Filey.

Read the reviews in advance which were positive and was looking forward to trying the food. Sadly rather underwhelmed by service and food

We were going to visit here as a family for lunch but we have 2 vegetarians in the family and therefore we were unable to eat here as they DO NOT serve any Vegetarian options here even though they advertise that they do so. Their website needs to be corrected ! .All items are fried in BEEF dripping which makes it unsuitable for vegetarians. If you have vegetarians in your family and also fish lovers who enjoy fish and chips at the coast then go to Inghams Fish Restaurant on Belle Vue Street in Filey as they do offer the most delicious Vegetable Lasagne for the vegetarians in your family and also very good fish and chips. So it’s Win Win all round.

Our go to fish and chip restaurant when we have visitors staying with us in Filey. A lovely restaurant to eat your fish and chips. Peaceful environment and we like the booth style seating. They do cater for families and can provide high chairs. Fish and chips cooked to perfection and no sachets of sauce/vinegar in sight 🤣Traditional sauces served from proper containers. Great pot of tea and great service.

Stopped here for afternoon lunch with 4 adults and a 3yr old on a Sunday afternoon. Had a lovely lunch. Food was great, service prompt and friendly. Prices very reasonable. They have toilets at the back as well.

Fantastic chips. The curry sauce is delicious and is every bit as good as the reviews say it is!

Food was spot on.we got recommend this fish n chip shop by locals.visited on our hols.food was good .service let it down staff looked like they didn't want to be there or talk with customers and didn't feel welcomed.se customers left due to this that were behind us

First time here.. lovely friendly lady took our order.. which came very quickly. The chips were crispy and clean with no eyes in them .. the fish was excellent., white and flaky and we ordered two portions of mushy peas, they were served in a dish and not in a carton which made a nice charge.. we were surprised at the amount of peas we got . This is the best fish and chips we have ever had. Most definitely be visiting again as we have just moved here. Thanks so much 😊 for a lovely meal.

Been calling at Browns for many years. Never disappoints. Fantastic fish and chips. Photo says it all. Always room inside to sit down so a good choice if the weather isn’t perfect.

We always have takeaway haddock and chips when visiting Filey and they're very good. The haddock is freshly cooked to order so is always hot with crispy batter. The portion size is good too.

First time visit and we really enjoyed our meal, can’t fault anything, the restaurant was extremely busy as it was Bank Holiday but the staff were efficient and friendly even though they were rushed off their feet, will definitely be back.

So glad we stumbled upon this little gem. The nicest fish and chips i’ve ever had and the staff were extremely pleasant. Cod was lovely and chunky with a nice lite crisp batter. The chips were to die for and we got a huge bowl of mushy peas to share 😋. To say we turned up as a party of 8 without booking (6 adults, 2 children), the service was really prompt. Will definitely go back here when we return to Filey.

After reading reviews about the Brown room ,we decided to try it .We were certainly not disappointed .The food was absolutely delicious, the fish was so white and the batter was cooked to perfection. The staff were really nice and helpful and the place was clean . We were really satisfied with the service we received . I would definitely recommend the Brown room .

I had heard so many good things about browns, I had to try them. To be honest there was very little wrong. The place is spotless clean and the staff are excellent. My only problem with the food is a minor one, I wish they would skin the fish. Only a small point and one for you to make up your own minds. For me I will just ask them to skin my fish, it certainly wouldn't stop me going again. All in all it's very good.

Fantastic food with great service. Always has great food with decent size portions. Great to take away and equally to eat in for table service. Great size portions of desserts also. Definitely no 1 in Filey.

Absolutely fantastic, I was so pleased the brown room was still here as I hadn't been for 30 years since I last came as a teenager, I used to come regularly with my auntie and uncle when we stayed at their holiday home in Filey and it was always great food and great service, well nothing has changed in all those years the food and service are fantastic and the decor is just the same too. The best fish and chips on the east coast.

Once ordered, I went home to eat these. Fish was cooked to perfection, however some of the chips seemed a bit raw and cold. Not the best, however on the bright side was served quickly and customer service was good

Wow!! Today we searched high and low for a decent chippy in our area and find nothing. Went as far as Filey and turned down a street to park and saw the brown room. At this point I was just thinking I’m starving I’ll go anywhere! Oh my days this was amazing!! Beautiful chips not covered in grease, crunchy batter and a soft bread bun! Can’t get any better than that! Well done and will be returning! Xxx

How is this place not #1? It deserves to be. Incredible f&c of the highest order. Great, well organised, enthusiastic young team serving and prepping. People are are always looking the ‘the best’ fish and chips and this has a lot of the attributes to take that title without trying too hard. We sat in and glad we did. It has so many little touches that we fell in love with. Clean full bottles. Including tartar sauce. No fiddly sachets here! Quaint and genuine retro deco Spun Stainless steel sauce dishes I challenge you to find a better curry sauce. Incredible. I want to go back tomorrow!!!

Brown crawl completed. Me and my mates just completed the Filey brown crawl. After drinking brown water from the war memorial fountain and having brown coffee and donuts on the sea front we headed to the brown room. The food in the brown room was terrificly brown, however the flow of the brown started taking over my bowels. We rushed down to the public bathrooms to decorate the toilet brown. Absolutely beautiful pice of fish (don't eat chips ) curry sauce Absolutely amazing portion size was huge and cooked perfectly kids said the chips were amazing aswell so on that note a score it 9.5 out of 10 dingo mandingos if your in filey its a must try

We live in Filey and have tried all the chippies in town over the years. The Brown Room is consistently the best! Great fish and chips, cooked to order right in front of you so always piping hot!......yum yum!

The best chip shop curry in the world. We had mini fish chips and curry and I cannot explain how good it was compared to any other I have ever had. The curry really is special. We go every year when we holiday in Filey.

I originally gave the brown room a 5 star review. But after my last visit it is now a 1 star review as the food was terrible. And to make it worse they were that oily that when I was holding the food in the car the fat dripped out of the paper and has ruined my clothes. Won't be visiting again

Was in with the wife for cod and chips And boy did it feed us. The lad who served us knew wat we meant when we said 2 fish suppers. He gave us extra potions of fish and it was lovely... one of best fish suppers ever.

Fantastic chippy loved it high quality food, probably the best chippy on the east coast. No silly sachets for tartar sauce and tomatoe sauce at extra cost. Proper bottles. Good service, nice quality cuppa and the owner friendly taking time to speak despite being busy gave me advice on boat launch from cobble. Wanted to go again but closed I was gutted.

Excellent customer service with a smile from lady serving & gentleman frying. We've recently got a seasonal pitch for our caravan. Always went inghams but the brown room are much nicer & staff more pleasant. Keep up the excellent work & banter.

The fish and chips were mediocre, but the disappointing aspect was the poor customer service. The girl serving was unfriendly, sullen and spoke in clipped sentences e.g Stand over here. What do you want? in a demanding tone. We didn't feel like customers, we felt like a source of irritation to her.

Best fish & chips on the planet !! Enough said … if you’ve not been just try them. Staff amazing, friendly, very clean and the food is always fresh!!! Not once have I ever had that greasy after feeling and we’ve been coming for years....

I had fish and chips with local friends who brought me to the Brown Room to buy take away. The first time was in 2018. The latest time was this time, in June this year. The batter is crispy and tasty. The chips are very good and the fish is enormous! The portions are humongous in my point of view. 😁 When you are craving some fish and chips I would definitely recommend the Brown Room!

Went here after a terrible experience at Inghams....we asked as soon as got there if we could order 2 large meals and share them (4 of us) the chap was so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, the fish was delicious, very generous...

Nice friendly staff and waiting for our takeaway. Very appertizing when served up. I commented on the size of this fish. Sadly it was disgusting! A fish with a yellowish tinge to it. Definitely possibility was pollock rather than cod or haddaock.Fish should be pure...

Fish and chips at the seaside can be disappointing but this was good. Very enjoyable and reasonable portion size. Crispy batter. I would prefer the option of a large mug of tea but that's trivial really.

A proper fish and chip shop. Really crisp batter on the fish and dripping cooked chips. Add a pot of tea for two and share a syrup sponge and custard for a perfect seaside supper. Lovely service too.
