I’ve lived in Whitby and must have had hundreds of fish and chips. This experience today is the worst I’ve ever had. We ordered 4 lots of fish and chips. Went in just after 4pm assuming we would be getting the fresh fish and chips. First time I’d used this place as was recommended by someone else who loves local. No word of a lie the chips were a disgrace, they had literally warmed up or re-fried the chips from dinner time and then served them to paying customers 2 hours later. We paid £40 for inedible solid chips to go with our fish. Rock hard and flavourless. All 4 of us were fuming as had waited for tea and ended up being hungry after throwing everything away. This fish were dripping in grease and again not up to any type of standard. The gravy was lumpy and too thick. Also not flavoured like gravy but more like a thick salty water The only thing of any note was the scraps were ok for the dog. He enjoyed them. Abysmal. Avoid this place at all costs. Been to two different fish and chip shops today. We tried to get into the magpie, but the queue was massive so we went to Terrys Fish bar. The fish looked good so we halved it and shared the chips, my half was great but my wife's was just batter. So we tried Trenchers. We waited for a while before we got our meal. It was the thinnest fish we've ever seen. Disappointed again. On reflection think the local chippies at home do a better job. (Pull your socks up) One of the reasons we came was because the fish and chip shops are supposed to be really good. The resort was fantastic the weather was eventually great too ( British Summer ). On reflection we've had a loverly weekend the resort 5☆

Awful. Used to be the best in Whitby but no more. Chips weren't hot and appeared to have been old ones refried. Fish was tasteless and the batter was thick and greasy. Won't go again.

If you want the best Fish & Chips and to feel like a local, then this is the place to go. You could be in a long queue and pay over the odds for F&C along the main seafront areas...but I paid less than £10 for a decent sized Haddock & Chips, where it would have been £12 on the main stretches...and the only wait is because the food is cooked fresh to order!!!

The first time we visited, the staff were so helpful with my son's indecisiveness that we visited every day of our holiday afterwards. The food was excellent and the value for money far outweighed the more expensive competition in town.

Been coming here years and it's dropped in quality lately, staff have a bad attitude and are frankly miserable and ignorant. May aswell have ordered a bottle of water than mushy peas as there was about 2 peas in the pot and full of water. Pie was bang average and soggy. Chips were satisfactory. Would not recommend nowadays, go elsewhere.

Went based upon good reviews, couldn't complain about the fish and chips but the mushy peas were absolutely disgusting. All water and a few measly peas at the bottom of the pot. Upon approaching the counter to complain we were told, That's how I like them! If you dine here avoid the peas at £1.70 a pop (and I bought 2!) and don't expect good customer service if you have an issue with your food.

Overall this chippy used to be best in town in my opinion but since its changed ownership its getting worse everytime I visit from quality to service! Very disappointed.

Just ordered a "large"portion of chips, it was so small I probably could have put them all in my mouth at once. Don't visit if you're hungry!

Stayed in whitby for 5 days and went here twice for fish & chips, the fish is so meaty & fresh. Lovely clean place we had take out but can eat outside.

We came here and despite the very good reviews we found the meal underwhelming. The chips were very brown, undercooked and soggy, the batter of the fish was quite tough and overall it was just too greasy. I hope this was just an off day or something (pictures of the food in reviews were different from what we got) as it was not a meal I would recommend.

Nothing special. Visited this chippy many times over the years. Always been 10/10. Somethings changed...our visit this last Thursday was less than average. Fish and chips x 2. Fish didn't taste that fresh to me. Didnt wow me like it has on the numerous visits before. Will be going elsewhere...We did go elsewhere twice...check out Eskdale Fisheries...not in the centre of Whitby but ohhh you will not be disappointed...promise...top chippy 100%

Needs to get back to previous high standards. Fish quality not as good as in the past and smaller size. Further, a smile and pleasant welcome to customers needs to return. May give it one more chance and then........

Have visited this fish and chip shop fore many years. In the past It has always been superb quality and great value for money. However on our recent visit it appears to have changed hands. The quality now is poor and very expensive. Don't go to this one now, try one of a number of excellent alternatives in Whitby.

Severe tummy pain, nausea, aches and temperature symptoms Within 1 hour of eating fish and chips (tasted foul and I had to throw more than half- chips semi- cooked and some like soil, fish semi-cooked). I awoke at 4am and have had severe diarrhoea and cramps since. I rang and spoke to Neil (manager)so that he knew. He rang me back and told me he knew me and that I was trouble!

Absolutely marvellous fish n chips. Freshly cooked, well worth the search with an adequate seating area outside out of the wind with no sea gulls. Well worth the 5 stars.

Silver Street has always been our go to for fish and chips. Really disappointed by last nights chips. Soggy, funny coloured, like they had been in and out of the fryer a few times but were raw in the middle. This is such a shame as they have always been the best in Whitby.

Really affordable good fish and chips. We had scampi as well and that was superb. Nice to have a little sitting spot where you can eat your chippy

been to silver street many times but this time not great fish did not taste of much, peas were so green they almost illuminated chips were not very hot ,staff not friendly made me feel i was doing something wrong when ordering, you can now go in the shop to be met with a portion wall just like the staff don't want to be near you. great shame thought it had changed hands but it had not.

Need to be more direct with days that they are open I’m here in January 26th and you say your open til 8pm on goggle and your not You are a really awesome place but dont have the best customer service.

We used this chippy as it was close to where we're staying for the weekend. Ordered haddock and chips x2 and portion of peas =£17 . The girl taking the order was not really listening to us and we had to keep repeating ourselves. Sat on the bench to wait , then back to the apartment . Mine was quite greasy and the batter was soggy underneath .My BIG complaint was -- THIS WAS NOT HADDOCK !! It had a strange taste to it , which lingered well after eating it. We come from a fishing port and know what real haddock tastes like -- not this . Avoid if you want to actually eat the fish you asked for.

I will start with the positives, the fish and chips are frashly cooked and up there in terms of taste with many of the other chip shops in the area. Unfortunately the speed of service is woefully slow. From joining the que there were 7 people in front of us waiting to order and 6 waiting to collect after ordering. It took 49minutes until we received our food order. Amazingly the speed of service is now slower than it was in Covid where allowances for slow service could be made. This chip shop has been a regular stop for me for over 40years and i have alot of fond memories of the place. Please sort out your service speed, i fear your proffits must be taking an enormous hit, there were at least 10 people who left the que before ordering due to the slow speed & to turn away such business is madness.

I wanted 3 portions of chips 2 with salt & vinegar. what I got was 3 portions of very greasy chips with no salt & vinegar. The ratings on here urged me to try it ..I wish I went elsewhere now..😡

Disappointing dry fish. Used to be really nice. Has it got new owners? Couldn't go in shop, served through hatch so didnt see the Haddock and Cod being fryed. Will try somewhere else next time

Often use this chip shop and it has a very good reputation. However on this occasion, I found the portion to be very small and the chips undercooked. On this particular visit it was the Cod that I was the most disappointed with, in that it was more like a half portion, and when I cut into it, it was what I could only describe as bits of fish inside the batter, not one solid piece of fish. I have no idea why it was like this, and have never before come across this. All in all very disappointing and certainly not value for money.

Have to say this experience left us searching for words having being treated so badly by a very ignorant man who clearly cannot be wrong, We use this Chippy frequently (Now Past Tense)as its very close to our Apartment in Whitby, So we ordered as usual and mentioned that an a previous visit the Chips were not cooked through at all, Not after a freebie just thought they would like constructive feedback, What followed was ridicules as the girl spoke with the Fryer because arms length away from us as if you don't know this Chippy you pay at a Window outside and get a numbered ticket given to you then your food is handed to you from another window once your number is called, Old owners let you in the chippy for a chat and a joke but they were clearly a lot more customer focused and appreciated your custom Getting no feedback at all i asked the man once again for this, To say he was rude was and understatement basically calling me and my wife Liars as he would never sent out uncooked chips(This was all in front of our 10 year Old Granddaughter) Totally arrogant and very unprofessional !!! My advise would be use another Chippy that appreciate your custom

Don't go anywhere else for your fish & chips. Freshly cooked, fresh fish in a light crispy batter with no skin or bones. Absolutely delicious! The chips are perfectly cooked as well. 👍

Ordered food… waited an hour… then only got one portion when I asked for 5. Didn’t seem to understand the concept of time… and there was no salt and vinegar! Loads of annoyed people waiting too. Don’t go unless you have one hour to spare

Whitby’s best kept secret! Tucked away from the crowds along a side alley. Some of the best fish and chips I’ve had! Portions not massive by modern standards but plenty enough. Had to put my own salt & vinegar which was a bit fiddly reopening all the boxes but adds to the quirkiness. Definitely be back!

Cooking to order meant a long wait. There were plenty of people around so worth the risk of cooking plenty.

Fantastic fish and chips and the price was excellent also. If you go to Whitby this is the shop to get your fish and chips. From the shop we walked and sat on bench seats over looking the harbour. Forget the fancy shops who charge ridiculous prices.

This used to be our go-to "hidden gem" where we thought we'd found the best fish n chips in Whitby at a reasonable price. We've been coming for years. Since (and during) Covid we've seen it slowly decline. Yesterday's visit will be our last. The food was so far removed from what we'd been used to. It was the kind of standard I'd expect if I asked for fish and chips in a kebab shop here in Nottingham. Possibly worse. Half the chips were undercooked and the fish seemed to me like it wasn't fresh. Even my wife - the eternal optimist - agreed it wasn't what it used to be. It's not just the food. The place has changed. It used to be a bustling, busy chip where you went INSIDE and felt like you were among the locals getting their dinner. Now you stand outside at a glass screen struggling to hear the guy on the other side mumbling. It's lost all its personality and charm. Such a shame.

Excellent value and great service

We had read previous reviews about this takeaway and decided to give it a try for lunch, and we were not disappointed. The fish was a good size and covered in perfectly cooked light crispy batter. The chips were just the right golden brown colour I like and to top it all, they were cheaper than any other takeaway we had looked at. The local park is just around the corner, so we sat in the sunshine, looking at the view of Whitby while having our lunch.

New favourite spot in Whitby 2022 update: by far the best dish and chips in Whitby. Avoid the crowds at the Magpie and go here instead, you will not be disappointed. Some of the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. Thin, crisp batter on fresh fish. Chips are fantastic. Curry sauce is about average but the fish and chips are so good it's kind of a shame to put sauce on it. Staff are friendly, service is quick and much cheaper than most of Whitby.

I would say the best takeaway fish and chips in Whitby. Generous portions too and if your lucky there are two tables outside to eat on, although you have to be quick as they get occupied quickly. Value for money is great too, I got a fish and chips and a sausage and chips, all for £12

This used to have the best fish and chips in Whitby. It seems to have changed hands and it looks like the new owner has chosen to alter the previously winning formula. Entry into the inner sanctum is now forbidden and you have to order at a hatch and wait outside until the number on your cloakroom ticket is called. Your number is shouted out and you receive now distinctly average fish and chips packaged up so you have to unwrap it at the hatch if you want salt or vinegar. Two cold, uncomfortable metal benches and tables are available outside whilst people stand all around you waiting for their orders. This was a splendid operation but impersonal service and an average product is now the offer here……what a shame.

Not as busy as front restaurants and never had to queue, very clean and staff excellent. Portions sizes ok, my wife had cod & I had haddock both extremely tasty & freshly cooked

Still have covid procedures so can’t enter and have to talk to someone through a slot serving hatch. It’s very unwelcoming. The fish was lovely but it all felt a bit clinical and strange

First time we have used this fish shop and were delighted with the fish and chips we bought. Service was efficient and the fish was cooked to order. Seemed as though both locals and tourists were ordering.

Where do I begin! Came highly recommended this place and it certainly did not let us down! Little tricky to find but please do make the effort it is certainly worth it! Whilst in Whitby you must have Cod snd Scampi and so we did! The price, the service the quality, freshly cooked to order its The Best! We stayed at the angel wetherspoons,we fancied fish and chips ,I checked the chippys out on TripAdvisor and decided to go to Silver Street fisheries it's left out of spoons and up a hill ,we weren't disappointed,my wife had cod & chips the fish was MASSIVE only £6 I got 4 fish bites and small chips only £13 for both.Its only a takeaway no seating inside.

Batter was too crispy so it just broke away from the fish. Fish was flavourless.

Very slow, then to top it off they missed the chips off the order so now waiting another 20 minutes for my chips. Just hope they are nice.

Your budget will find all possible means of escape in Whitby. This place bucks the trend. Found it on a general walk around & explore. Very friendly, great portions and a fraction of the price of anywhere else I've seen. Was told the chips were made using a first fry at lower temperature followed by a high temperature fry so means a crisper, full-flavoured chip. Had large sausage and chips, curry sauce, a pickled eggs with a shandy for around £7. Top quality. Nice benches terrace/patio at the front to sit in whilst I demolished. Destroyed the wooden fork but they didn't bat an eyelid and gave me two replacements. It's hidden away but well worth making the effort to find. So good I returned the following night.

Left a one star review in July as the food was awful, truly the pits. However plucked up courage at the weekend as it is very local to us and gave it another go. To be fair it was amongst the best fish and chips...

Haven't been to Silver street since it was taken over. We used to come here regularly when the Welsh guy ran it. He was always friendly, had great conversation and his food was top notch. Today's visit was the complete opposite. Met at the hatch...

A little bizzare still having COVID procedures but the.quality of the food and value for money is still fantastic! Huge piece of fresh haddock and a really generous portion of chips for £7.50 in this day is a bargain compared to what you pay down in the touristy spots.

Good prices,very tasty fish and chips. The portions were also good size. Quick turn around,did not wait long at all for the food to be ready. Love the table and chairs that have a fish theme.
