Review of The Broughton Inn, Preston – A Decline in Standards Having previously visited The Broughton Inn over a year ago, I was eager to return, given that my last experience was outstanding. At that time, the venue was thriving—fully booked, requiring advance reservations, and offering exceptional food and service. However, my most recent visit on Sunday, March 2, 2025, was a stark contrast. The once-vibrant atmosphere was missing, and the overall experience suggested a lack of care and attention from the current management and staff. The alarm bells rang the moment I arrived. The original smoking area, which once served as a well-maintained and inviting space to unwind with a drink, looked completely neglected. It was unkempt, unset up, and gave the immediate impression that no one cared about the venue’s presentation—both inside and out. This lack of attention to detail was a recurring theme throughout my visit, highlighting clear management issues that need to be addressed. Despite being overstaffed, the venue was nearly empty. Service was impersonal—menus were simply placed on the table without introduction, and there was no mention of specials or dessert options. Basic hospitality standards, such as regular toilet checks and attentive customer engagement, appeared to have been overlooked entirely. The food quality was particularly disappointing. A Sunday lunch that once stood out as exceptional was now below average, yet prices remained unchanged. The Yorkshire puddings were frozen and poorly reheated, the vegetables were soggy, and the overall meal lacked the quality that once made this venue stand out. It’s clear that the attention to detail and care in food preparation has drastically declined. The current chefs seem indifferent, with little regard for presentation or quality. Beyond the food, what truly made The Broughton Inn special was the warm, inviting atmosphere. It used to be a pleasure walking in to the comforting glow of a fire, accompanied by background music that created a welcoming environment. This time, however, there was neither a fire nor any music playing, leaving the space feeling cold and lifeless. The charm that once made this pub a destination has vanished, and it’s difficult to understand what has happened to cause such a decline. Even the finer touches that once elevated the dining experience have been removed. Gone are the stylish designer plates that once added to the restaurant’s premium feel—now, food is served on standard, uninspired plates, further diminishing the overall experience. It’s a small but telling detail that reflects a broader issue: cost-cutting at the expense of customer satisfaction. When I expressed my concerns while paying the bill, the response from staff was indifferent. My comments about the decline in food quality were met with a shrug, and a casual remark between staff members indicated they were unaware of how the venue had been run before. The most concerning aspect is that the restaurant is charging premium prices while delivering subpar food and service. Without urgent improvements, this venue risks losing its customer base entirely. Final Thoughts The Broughton Inn was once a standout venue in Preston, offering not just great food but a warm and inviting experience. Unfortunately, based on my recent visit, it is no longer delivering on either front. I sincerely hope someone from the higher management team takes note of this review and makes the necessary changes to restore The Broughton Inn to its former glory. The location has great potential, but unless the right steps are taken, it risks becoming yet another closed pub.

Absolutely lovely place, filled with charming features on the inside! The staff are superb and make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in - it is also dog friendly (not just dog tolerant - the staff genuinely help your dog settle in with water and treats) and the food we had - Sunday Lunch - was second to none! When you see the price you might think you can get carvery cheaper elsewhere - yes you can - but not like this! The quality of every meat was excellent, the vegetables were perfectly al dente and the gravy was the best I've ever tasted! Have actually emailed Vintage Inns directly to pass our thanks and praise on, as well as leaving this review, it was that good! We will most definitely be back, special thanks to the two young gentleman who fussed our dog - don't think she wanted to leave after meeting you two! :-)

Came in today with my father in law after a visit to the aquatic shop, it was just because we was passing and decided to stop off on the way home and I'm so glad we did 😊 atmosphere is lovely and warming the food was out of this world garlic mushrooms cooked to perfection and a beautiful crispy fat top on my gammon steak 😀 😋 as for the staff well all I can say is this if I had a restaurant of my own and came to yours for a bite to be greeted by and seated by the amazing Ollie the best service I've ever had from a waiter I'd be poaching him for my own place! Keep a good grip of him he truly is an amazing person who's so fantastic at their job he's basically gold dust ✨️ I will most definitely be back for the food and the service 💯 and will be recommending to all my friends to stop off if passing 👌 also to add its dog friendly too so take your fur babies for a treat 😊

Went for the Lunch time special, 3 courses £20.50, definately wasnt dissappointed, the food was hot, beautifully presented and delicious. Lovely friendly staff and warm atmosphere. Will be going again.

First visit here in a good few years, last time wasn’t great & probably explains our lack of patronage. We very nearly didn’t even go in the pub, as we walked from the car park the ‘state’ of the outside shocked me! Needs a good clean & some maintenance. (See photos) Unfortunately when I see this, I immediately think “wonder what the kitchens like?”. I checked the hygiene rating & it is a 5, although this is from Dec 2022…. To start I had:- STICKY CRISPY CHICKEN Pretty nice, the chipotle chilli jam really good £7.25 For main I had:- STICKY DUCK & HOISIN PIZZA This was ok, very thin almost like a flat bread. Was also a bit dry, probably needs more Hoisin on pizza or / and on the side. For £15.50 I think it was all the money. Service was also a bit hit & miss, the guy who served us said he’d come & take our order, think he forgot so I ordered at the bar. The bar service was ‘functional’ at best. On this visit I’d find it hard to recommend & somewhere we probably won’t be rushing back.

We couldn’t be bothered cooking. So we thought we’d come, sit by the fire and have our dinner cooked for us. And thats what we did. We ordered starters. Drinks. Then mains. The service was excellent. I had the Fish and Chips. My husband had the gammon. It was cooked perfectly. Keep up the great work. Big shout out to Tom, Mia & Avaleigh.

We've taken family & friends around 4 times now and the food has always been spot on. Service can sometimes be abit slow regardless of how busy it is but would defo recommend.

Our second time at The Broughton Inn, the first experience wasn't great but thought we would give it another go for a second chance since it's fairly local to us. It was a bad experience start to finish, despite the booking for a table of 8 a while ago it wasn't on the system. Understably drinks were sold out, that's fine its christmas but there was multiple meals unavailable, after making our orders to be told some of these also wasn't available. Being a table of 8 ordering starters and mains we said to the waitress do you not need to write it down? to which she replied " no i have a really good memory ". Then we was made to feel bad when she came back to write down our orders again as so much had changed despite it being their fault as the meals we ordered were not available. The young waitress serving at dinner time today has a serious attitude problem and really needs to work on her customer service skills. We actually joked about them running out of food and telling us mid meal when everyone else had theirs. Then we was told that one meal had basically been forgotten! The waitress with the great memory even forgot to come back to take drinks order when we was waiting. My meal was dry and not the best, even my 4 year old commented how dry her chicken was on our way home. A mistake or two is fine, we are human but this has to be the worst meal out to date and it was a celebratory occasion too, such a shame. My mum and dad waited 40 years to get married just a low key thing small family gathering and the day was ruined by Broughton inn and it’s completely unprofessional staff. I’d warn anyone thinking of going to Broughton Inn please do not go and waste your money! Stay home and give the money to charity and you will have a better time than going to this place!

I have been driving past hundreds of times. 1st time in tonight. I can't praise the staff any further. All of them are attentive to details. Always checking if your visit is alright and if your food and drinks are fine. Brilliant service all round. Fairly priced too. I have been in quite a few pubs around north and west of Preston in my past years. I have to name this one of the best experiences. Keep it up guys.

Oh dear, what a disappointment. We'd chosen this place for their "Festive Menu" as it would be the only opportunity this year for "Christmas Dinner" with the in-laws, so we really didn't need anything to be wrong. Other than that, my expectations for a pub lunch aren't high. The Festive Menu was 2-courses for £26.50 and £29.50 for 3-courses, and having viewed the website, we knew what to look forward to. The starters were well-received - I had the camembert & cheddar mushroom fondue, which was very nice. Things went downhill after that. Whilst three tucked into their turkey dinners*, the only vegetarian dish on the Festive Menu (root vegetable wellington) wasn't available. We were told a large group had pre-ordered it, so there was none for us. Sneaky, as there's nothing on the website to say vegetarians need to pre-order their food. Aubergine gratin was a poor substitution - it wasn't Christmas dinner, was it? *The carrots were too tough (undercooked) to cut with a knife. And yes, we did mention it at the time. Still, there was pudding to look forward to, or was there? After ordering profiteroles, we were informed they weren't available either! So we left and bought cake from the co-op next door and went home for a cup of tea. Also, it is worth mentioning the service. The one young lady covering table service was pleasant and working hard, but with all the tables to cover on her own service was inevitably slow (it took ages for the starters to arrive). From us walking in to leaving was 2 hours, and bear in mind we had 2-courses and not the three we had intended. As we stood in the car park saying our goodbyes, we talked about planning our next meal and get-together. We all agreed it wouldn't be here. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression, and I'm sorry Broughton Inn but you let yourself down today.

Second time visiting, we were here last year for our annual birthdays and was so good we did it again this year, we also plan to come again next year... Today was 5 of us. The food is prepared really well and piping hot when served. Attention to detail is pretty good too. 100% honesty we had 1 missing portion of stuffing and 1 drink mix up which was very minor, did not detract from the meal at all and was rectified within no time at all. All five of us enjoyed our meals, the atmosphere was very pleasant as well which also helped. Pictures are of my dish of "Trio of meats Roast" and my wife had "Lamb Rump Roast" with a "Sticky Toffee Pudding" and "Eton Mess". We had a lovely time, see you next year the Wallace group at 1pm. We were recommended this place by a friend from Preston to stop at on our way to our honeymoon. So glad we did! Delicious home made food, with great chunky tasty chips! Tom and Ollie were so lovely and thoughtful! We liked it so much we are hoping to call again on our way back! Just off the M6 and easy to get to. 5* highly recommend.

Love the cosy surroundings and ambience. Staff are always friendly and attentive and there is a great selection of food and drink - Most importantly of all, we are able to bring our dog.

Truly disappointed in my first visit. Stood for a while waiting at the 'please wait to be seated' sign, had to attract attention to be attended to. After being seated in the pet friendly area, despite not having any animals, I could have been allergic, and we had booked the other area, we were told there was no table service, and we had to order at the bar. Decided on drinks first, and waited at the bar, very slow service (other tables were being waited on, despite us being told there was no table service) once drinks were got, we all decided on what food. I returned to the bar to queue again. After 10 minutes waiting, I ordered the Sunday roast trio, was told there was no beef, only one turkey left and 5 lamb. I opted for pork belly instead. I ordered 2 of the pie of the day - to be told - no pies left. We then had to choose other items, which were not what we had come for. I ordered the kids pizza, which was tiny! The size of my hand, and for £8.50! I ordered pate to start, had to ask for butter. My brother chose the hunters chicken schnitzel, which arrived burnt and the salad was dire. After the tiny pizza was eaten my son was still hungry so I had to purchase him another. After ordering again at the bar, more queuing, took my seat for a waitress to come over and say there was now no more pizza. I had to get a refund as it was just too late to order more food and wait, they did offer some fries. Unfortunately these 'free' fries took so long to arrive it was too late. We tried to queue once again to discuss our concerns/disappointment in the food and service, but honestly couldn't wait any longer to see someone so just left. We will not be visiting again, and won't be recommending it either.

Stopped of on route to Scotland with the Campervan, we parked up and went in for dinner, we both had the Penang Curry, delicious even though it was very sticky Jasmine rice!! Customer service was a 10/10, had an issue with our drinks, asked for Cider but was given Madri, barman said it was different but after several sips we were not convinced, brought this to the attention of a member of staff, they went to investigate and returned with 2 new ciders and I could keep the Madri!! That’s customer service, thank you see you again!!

Lovely cosy pub with great staff and varied food menu. Good selection of beers on tap. Dog friendly inc some dining areas. Recommend the lamb dishes, steak, pork belly and pies. The mini desserts and coffee are also a perfect way to end your meal.. top tip.. the crumble isn’t so mini 😉

Went here for a lunch with the family including my infant daughter. Wait staff were very accommodating and friendly. Food was good, I had the Gammon steak, which was good. Probably would get something else next time, but it’s not the fault of the chef, just a poor choice on my part. Everyone’s meals looked amazing, and my wife who has to eat a vegan diet due to allergies, was very impressed by everything. Absolutely would come again, the location makes it a great middle point between Blackburn and St Anne’s.

As a vegetarian for 30 years this is without doubt the best Sunday dinner I have ever had. The wellington absolutely first class. Never been to a place that caterer so well to vegetarians/vegans without the usual curry dishes.

Really looked forward to something special for a Sunday roast, mainly because of the price. But regrettably received a very below par meal. Roast potatoes are actually fried new potatoes, tasted like they were tinned, belly pork was dry, served without any crispy crackling, and strangely served with an apple pie, which to be fair was ok, would’ve been nicer with a bowl of custard. Very nice surroundings, staff were nice, but the food was poor, definitely won’t be going back.

My mum and I came earlier today for the first time and it was honestly a lovely experience. Tom was super friendly and you can tell he just likes talking to people. He was super helpful when I asked for a modification on a burger and made us feel very welcome. The place also looks awesome. It reminds me of a modern DnD tavern (this is a compliment). I would really recommend a visit!

So bad .. burnt food. Absolutely no offer of compensation and was told had to pay for drinks as we had drunk them. Even though most of it was drunk awaiting for burnt food to arrive. Head chef was off and GENERAL MANAGER WAS ACTING HEAD CHEF .. COULDNT GET ANY WORSE. WONT BE BACK. LEFT A BAD REVIEW

Came in for some dinner and was thrilled with their hearty seasonal pub food as well as a large selection of lager and craft ale. Service was excellent and staff were both friendly and attentive. Was served by Catherine who did a great job of managing a busy restaurant while taking extra care to ensure we had everything we needed. Will definitely be visiting again in the near future.

Had a lovely meal here recently. Chicken burger, steak and fries. The honeycomb bomb was beautifully presented. All delicious. Service was excellent as well.

Brilliant pub. Classic pub meals. Cater for young children as well which worked perfect after a long drive.

I visited a couple of times while in the area. First night the lamb rump, second night the pie of the day. Friendly place and pleasant staff with some nice beers on tap. Price probably about average these days. On the second visit they had put an extra beer on the bill which I noticed and they rectified immediately with an apology- always a good sign of customer service - how they deal with issues. I would be happy to return
