The Broken Bridge, Wetherspoons, Pontefract in Wakefield

Nice pub, didn't eat here. Excellent pint of Guinness. Service was better than the last time.

Me and my friend came for some lunch. It was all going fine until she had chip and started saying it tasted like “cow poo”. I didn’t believe her at first and she couldn’t finish the rest of her meal, until i had a chip that tasted the exact same. I started gipping and my eyes watering i’ve never tasted anything like it. It could have been a bad batch but we both will not be returning.

We go for breakfast every Sunday. There is one big long room so there are plenty of tables. There are a mix of people using it, couples, the elderly and families. The food is the same as most wetherspoons, cheap and cheerful. During the colder months there are two coal/wood fires lit, one at each end of the room. The toilets are downstairs so that's a good thing for the elderly or young children. We've visited a couple of times in the evening and enjoyed a couple of hours. Never seen any trouble there or had any problems. Staff are friendly and helpful. The only thing that can be a problem is if you are having a hot drink, there is sometimes a queue even though there are two machines. They could also do with a hot drinks machine at both ends of the room. All in all its an okay place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

First three items I tried to order were out of stock. The next two I tried to order they don’t even do anymore. I ended up paying for an expense “Gourmet” burger they recommended- which is no better than the normal burgers they do. Please fix the menu - we used to love a spoons tea.

Ordered breakfast no eggs no butter came with toast so we asked. Said would bring but never did.

My sister and I popped in on Christmas Eve, having been tempted by the festive menu displayed in the window. I went to the bar and ordered two plates of sliced turkey with winter vegetables. The barmaid looked at me blankly, as if I had perhaps said something indecent. Then she looked at her screen. And then: "Is tha' on t' Christmas menu?" Me: "Er, yes." (Thinking: well, this isn't a brilliant start...) The barmaid went to the kitchen door and spoke to someone else, who appeared to be just standing there idly, and who looked over at me and sniggered. Then the barmaid came back: "WE ANT GORRANY!" (Not: "Sorry, we're not serving that today." Not: "I'm afraid that's off today, would you like to order something else?" No, just: "WE ANT GORRANY!") Me: "Right. Fair enough." (To my sister, waiting patiently at a table: "Get your coat back on. We're out of here.") Reply to the reply: I would suggest that the "joke" is perhaps on you. I grew up in Pontefract, and return there regularly - including (formerly, but never again) to your establishment. How dare you i) reply in that sarcastic way, ii) assume I might object to people's accents and iii) actually imply racism on my part? Just how disingenous can you get? My capital letters and the transcription of her words merely referred to the fact that your staff member was rude, aggressive and unapologetic. She clearly had no knowledge of your festive menu, and absolutely zero training in customer relations. My */***** inevitably refers to that alone. We were given no opportunity, unfortunately, to assess anything else. And can I assume that you meant "demand outstripped supply", rather than what you wrote ("supply outstripped demand")... ? You don't appear to have a very firm grasp of basic business principles, do you?

We always have a brilliant time at the broken bridge. The food is always first class and Gemma the waitresses is always very friendly and helpfull. A really good waitress...

Great meeting place with options for hot or cold food great prices on alcohol always plenty of staff many people come everyday which shows how popular it is .

Decent spoons. Dark at the front. Light at the back with the sunlight, although at the back, you’re quite far from the bar. No issues with breakfast (was an egg shortage, but no big deal)

Had a traditional breakfast the other morning and everything was cooked to perfection the black pudding was absolutely amazing . On my way out I asked for the names of the chefs because I wanted to compliment them so Jamie and Gemma deserve a lot of praise .

Come in every thurs evening, foods always good, the staff are pleasant and pretty good value for money

disappointed this evening. We turned up for an evening meal only to realise that they've totally gutted the menu. No more steaks, gammons, (the whole "off the grill" section has gone), half roast chicken, pies ... It's now mainly burgers, pizzas and fried chicken. I know that Spoons isn't exactly fine dining but if I wanted takeaway food, I'd just order in. Drinks are still good value. Hemsworth: Still full menu. Result.

Full of pontefract rats but other than that the pub is nice

Food: I had the American cheese burger with chips and garlic&herb sauce. With another alcoholic drink for £9.63. The food came on an overly large plate which probably made the portions look smaller that what they were, but 15 chips and a burger the size that it look like it came off the children's menu. The flavour was what you'd expect from pub grub. For dessert I have the warm chocolate fudge cake £5.48. Again cake in an overly sized bowl making it look smaller that necessary, you could tell it had been left in the microwave for too long as it tastes burnt. I'm still looking for the fudge. Service: The wait staff were nice and friendly, but took a long time to come and clear the table. Atmosphere: Exactly what you'd expect from a pub that serves food, out of date pretty much everything, it was at 25% capacity while we were there and we were still left waiting for everything.

Wanted ham egg and chips....no eggs, got offered an hash brown, which is actually the alternative on a breakfast. I asked if I could have a slice of bread or peas instead, was told no....left without anything. Crazy or what?

This is not the staffs fault But taking grill off the menu is a joke. The claim there are extra burgers, in reality there aren’t. No mixed grill or steak basically means no point in going - ruined my Valentine’s Day

A great, local Wetherspoons! Great for families too, staff are always lovely, food is cheap and cheerful (perfect for us!) and it's always clean.

The food was terrible. The nachos were half missing and missing ingredients. The rest of it was over microwaved. Shame

Honestly a brilliant place for a reliable meal and drinks. I got the fish and chips which was cooked to perfection and was delivered promptly at a very reasonable price. The staff were lovely and checked back to make sure my meal was okay. (Unfortunately my camera wasn’t working to take any photos). This establishment is clean, tidy and managed very well. The temperature of the pub was perfect and comfortable. Overall, very impressed with The Broken Bridge and I’ll definitely be back.

The staff were extremely pleasant and went above and beyond to help us. The large fish was nicely cooked with lovely white fish inside the batter. We were provided with two plates so we could share the meal. The manager spent time telling us about the community notice board as we enquired if we could display a poster there for a local group. A very positive experience.

Breakfast served quickly and was hot. Very nice

Spent a couple of nice hours in here Disabled toilets were spotless.

Good sized spoons with friendly staff

Went in on a Friday evening for food with family, bang average microwave food, have to wrestle through chavs to get to the bar then wait half hour to be served, my husband come back from the toilet and said it was like a disco at Maradona's in there group of blokes smelling there keys, the lady's wasn't much better full of sl*gs talking about sex playing pass the fiver and to top it off we had a crazy one armed women giving her life story, sorry but next time think I sit in the bus station with a Stella and kebab.....

Place is always clean when I visit, food is great well cooked and presented Staff are always warm and welcoming and help with anything you need

The food was good however the service from Jackie was ABSOLUTELY amazing. She’s so sweet and kind and made us laugh, deserves a raise definitely!!! Hope to see her again next time.

Nice wetherspoon just popped in for a quick drink

A classic English pub, quite pleasant. We had breakfast for 2 people for less than 7 pounds. It's a good option for breakfast :)

Wetherspoons, not much to add. Food was just ok, quick service and interesting clientele.

Very poor ordered 2 gammon and chips came within five minutes gammon must have been slapped in a frying pan for a minute Very tasteless and greasy would not recommend it

It's ok in here the food is poor sometimes in my view I've had to send it back and on occasions asked for a refund the tables very rarely get cleaned unless you do it yourself they do seem a bit short staffed not as well run as other Witherspoon's I've been to still the same / new management couple have taken over and things are improving it seems more cleaner the staff work better and faster it's getting there

Service was good. I ordered toast, which always arrives cold no matter which spoons you go to, but other breakfasts looked good.

Always had very good meals here cannot fault one. Beers are very good and well presented. Although like anywhere hotels included wear and tear is evident here but always clean on my visits nonetheless. The only complaint I have are of underage unaccompanied children using the pub as a thoroughfare or sitting on steps outside being intimidating. Overall a well managed pub.

I enjoyed my meal at The Broken Bridge. I will go again.

Don’t go on a Saturday,staff haven’t got a clue as to keeping tables clean .lots of tables left with used plates etc on them .NOTE to managers give your staff a proper pre shift brief .staff seems unorganised when it seriously need not be like this .

Food is excellent and great value for money The problem is the staff. Blond haired lady and another lady shouting from horsefair end of bar to washing hatch about collecting glasses. Blond haired lady would rather have a conversation with a punter than refill milk I. Coffee machine when four people are waiting and only one machine working. It really is poor.

Great boozer cheap and no bother

Rather a longer wait for breakfast than i expected, but most of the food warm except for the beans. I had a traditional breakfast with mushrooms and hot drinks for a little over a fiver. Nothing exceptional about the building from the outside, however, deceptively large inside with a small beer garden.

Breakfast was on point this morning, probably the best spoons I have been to. Not too busy not too quiet.

Good quality coffee at an exceptionally low price. Good quality breakfasts too.

Excellent hot cheap food in a very popular pub

We visit here quite a lot. Went on Friday and had food off the cheaper menu which is offered in a lot of wetherspoons. Excellent value. All day brunch and a pint £6.44. Where else can you get that? The food was very hot on hot plates served by a lovely lad who asked later if all was OK. Everything tasty and fresh. Only one gripe about the pub itself.....it's too 🥶 Everyone was saying it was cold. We are in England not Spain. Doesn't need air con on. All the doors were open so that was enough. Wasn't even hot outside.

Nice pub, good atmosphere. Staff helpful, professional. Food after ordering, arrived quite quickly. Nice sausage chips beans, was also offered eggs to go with it. My partner had a pasta dish which she said was lovely. Small beer garden at rear which was nice to sit in after finishing food. Woould thoroughly recommend this pub which os a Weatherspoons pub. Been here many many times service is great so helpful even made my coffe for me as I had a little one with me and the atmosphere is good for a lunch time pub lunch but and I hate having to put but after maybe 50 times here I had my first bad meal the eggs benedict wasn't good at all dry salad that was ment fir a rabbit the eggs where over done no yolk at all which is not how yiu want an eggs benedict tge sauce was ok not as silky as it should be a touch grainy but ok i still would recommend eating here just stay away for the eggs benadict everything else is not bad pub grub and very reasonable prices

I go into weatherspoons twice a week for lunch with friends, always been pleased with food,drinks & price range. Far better than weatherspoons in Wakefield to say that as just been refurbished?

Disgusting place for a breakfast. Went in at 8.30am to get a breakfast, 5 people at bar ordering pints of larger!! Breakfast came within 3 mins of ordering, all congealed and cold, requested no mushrooms, it came with 3 large mushrooms!!! Shocking place for food, DON'T GO THERE!!!! The company has stated this is a FAKE review, I can assure you this is not, It was a bad experience, so I reviewed it as said, just go in at 8.30am and see for yourself!

Popped in for breakfast Saturday morning at 9.30am, ordered full breakfast without mushrooms, meal arrived within 3mins, not possible I thought, found out why it was so quick, the meal was already set on the plate, absolutely flat cold and with mushrooms!

After visiting Pontefract parkrun this morning about 20 of us descended on the Broken Bridge for breakfast. It’s a lovely large open plan pub and we rearranged the furniture so we could all sit together. The staff were really accommodating and friendly. The food came out fast to say there were so many of us and it was hot. It was one of the better Spoons we’ve visited.

A fabulous Wetherspoon pub run by Joanne and Terry. Food and drinks are very good indeed and a special mention to Emma in the kitchen also who is amazing. Will definitely return!

Clean, tidy, a bit 1990’s flashback to old Rovers Return in a way, to which suits the area completely fine, in my visit to Pontefract. I’ve learnt I must speak slower, as my broad Sheffield de Dar accent / Mancs (dialect) does not translate greatly across to the locals. Well having sustained a hand injury, ( argument with a dodgy patio door last weekend) 😂. I’m taking a break from been the director of DT Fire and Security for now. Traveling the Country. Places I haven’t been and seen. So this place the first I’ve come to, Well, I’ll give it top marks. Just a few little bits. The Chicken Gravy is Rather Banging when requested hot and fresh, I couldn’t eat my meal without fresh Wetherspoons chicken Graaayvaaay. 😎 It could do with a minor refurb as it’s a bit well worn this place, re-varnish the woodwork 👩🏼‍🍳 The bread and butter was spot on. Made a bacon & black pudding sarnie then dipped it in Fresh Graaaaayvaaay. That item should go On the menu. I did enjoy it. 😁 The dining area staff do a good job. Toilets spotless. Old uns happy. Go to the broken bridge a few days a week after work ! The staff are great so friendly. The land lady Joanne is amazing always smiling and makes effort to chat and welcome you . What she's done to turn the pub round is amazing too (how it was 15 months ago ) it 100% and more better than it was . Joanna is one of the most friendly, caring landladys I know .

Very freindly staff nothing is too much trouble. Always a plesant visit . Jo goes above and beyond for her customers.

Cheep and cheerful, plenty of room and tables to sit down at. We do our regular "on Sunday we are ladies who brunch and drink a copious amount of lattes" thingy, hanging out for hours 😀

I like it, probably one of the best spoons I've been to. Staff are always really friendly, food is always quickly made, tastes really nice especially for the prices, me and my wife have come a fair few times now, we really like it. Ps they make a decent beer shandy, I drive so no choice lol. Place is clean, toilets are clean, as I said before been to alot of wetherspoons and this one is the best in my opinion.

We ordered food including 2 bacon sandwiches. When they came the bacon was uncooked and the fat was still white We mentioned it to the young man who asked if everything was ok and when we told him he said it was nothing to do with him . He took the plates cleaned them off and never even told the kitchen staff. Very poor service from kitchen and floor staff

Went to The Broken Bridge for Sunday lunch and genuinely enjoyed the visit. Yes, it's a Wetherspoons and by definition, you know roughly what you're going to get. However, the staff in Pontefract were very happy, extremely friendly and the food came out to us in good time. A couple of curries had been ordered and they were really very tasty indeed. The papadums were crispy and not at all greasy. The naan was well cooked and the curry was cooked perfectly. We left, well fed and ready to explore the rest if the town. Recommended.

Good value and friendly staff . Food is excellent value for money and shout out to Gemma , who is always busy , but still has a big smile for all the customers.

We have been coming into the broken bridge for ages. Since Joanne and Terry took over the service and friendly Ness is amazing the staff especially Gemma and Declan are Brilliant the food is delicious would recommend it to anyone for the friendly atmosphere

What a place never again. So me and my friend went here weekend. Service was poor and place was a right mess. Place needs a good cleaner. Food cold and call that a latte never again. Place was more like a local youth club for kids and louts just wanting to drink and cause bother

I absolutely love coming to the broken bridge every morning for my breakfast it's cooked perfectly just how I ask for my bacon. Well done thanks to Emma from the kitchen the staff are all lovely and friendly would 💯 recommend for a lovely friendly pub

I ordered small fish and chips....ham and eggs for my wife. When it came I was furious. On looking at the plate I thought the chef had forgot to put the fish on but, on closer inspection, there was a miniscule portion of battered fish, so small I mistook it for one of the chips..no joking. About 4" long and half inch thick...that was the "fish" I know it sounds like I'm eggagerating here but, on my life, that's what arrived, curled up too. The waitress went back to the kitchen and came back with another piece, the same size, alongside the first piece. ( Photos are with both pieces of fish showing..so imagine how I felt when they first served the one piece) The Manager also turned up and asked me to apologise to the waitress for the use of foul language and suggested I forked out some more money to get something like what I expected in the first place. My wife had finished eating her ham and eggs by this time and was getting at me for the swearing I had done. She agreed I had virtually been robbed, however. So that's done me for ever having food at Weatherspoons again. I wondered how they managed to sell cheap beer. Now I know how. Rob customers with the food.
